Joshua 8
1 The LORD said to Joshua, “Don’t be afraid, and don’t be dismayed. Take all the warriors with you, and arise, go up to Ai. Behold, I have given into your hand the king of Ai, with his people, his city, and his land.
Et l'Éternel dit à Josué: Sois sans crainte et sans peur! Prends avec toi tous les gens de guerre et mets-toi en campagne et marche sur Aï. Vois! j'ai livré entre tes mains le Roi d'Aï et son peuple et sa ville et son pays.
2 You shall do to Ai and her king as you did to Jericho and her king, except you shall take its goods and its livestock for yourselves. Set an ambush for the city behind it.”
Et tu traiteras Aï et son Roi comme tu as traité Jéricho et son Roi; mettez au pillage à votre profit ses dépouilles et ses bestiaux seulement. Dresse une embuscade à la ville par derrière.
3 So Joshua arose, with all the warriors, to go up to Ai. Joshua chose thirty thousand men, the mighty men of valour, and sent them out by night.
Alors Josué et tous les gens de guerre se mirent en mouvement pour marcher sur Aï. Et Josué fit choix de trente mille hommes, braves guerriers, qu'il fit partir de nuit.
4 He commanded them, saying, “Behold, you shall lie in ambush against the city, behind the city. Don’t go very far from the city, but all of you be ready.
Et il leur donna ces instructions: Faites attention! vous resterez en embuscade en vue de la ville, derrière la ville, ne vous éloignez pas trop de la ville et tenez-vous tous prêts.
5 I and all the people who are with me will approach the city. It shall happen, when they come out against us, as at the first, that we will flee before them.
Moi de mon côté, et toute la troupe qui m'accompagne, nous nous approcherons de la ville, et lorsqu'ils sortiront à notre rencontre comme la première fois, nous prendrons la fuite devant eux.
6 They will come out after us until we have drawn them away from the city; for they will say, ‘They flee before us, like the first time.’ So we will flee before them,
Et laissez-les nous poursuivre jusqu'à ce que nous les ayons attirés loin de la ville; car ils diront: ils fuient devant nous comme la première fois. Nous fuirons donc devant eux.
7 and you shall rise up from the ambush, and take possession of the city; for the LORD your God will deliver it into your hand.
Vous alors, sortez de l'embuscade et emparez-vous de la ville; et l'Éternel, votre Dieu, la livrera entre vos mains.
8 It shall be, when you have seized the city, that you shall set the city on fire. You shall do this according to the LORD’s word. Behold, I have commanded you.”
Et quand vous aurez pris la ville, mettez-y le feu. Vous agirez comme a dit l'Éternel. Faites attention! je vous ai donné l'ordre.
9 Joshua sent them out; and they went to set up the ambush, and stayed between Bethel and Ai on the west side of Ai; but Joshua stayed amongst the people that night.
Josué les chargea donc de cette mission. Arrivés au lieu de l'embuscade, ils prirent position entre Béthel et Aï, à l'occident d'Aï. Cependant Josué passa cette nuit-là au milieu de sa troupe.
10 Joshua rose up early in the morning, mustered the people, and went up, he and the elders of Israel, before the people to Ai.
Et le matin Josué s'étant levé fit passer sa troupe à la revue, puis il se porta, lui et les Anciens d'Israël, à la tête du peuple, devant Aï.
11 All the people, even the men of war who were with him, went up and came near, and came before the city and encamped on the north side of Ai. Now there was a valley between him and Ai.
Et tous les gens de guerre qui étaient avec lui, se mirent en marche et s'avancèrent et arrivèrent en vue de la ville; et ils campèrent au nord d'Aï, laissant la vallée entre eux et Aï.
12 He took about five thousand men, and set them in ambush between Bethel and Ai, on the west side of the city.
Or c'était environ cinq mille hommes qu'il prit et mit en embuscade entre Béthel et Aï, à l'occident de la ville.
13 So they set the people, even all the army who was on the north of the city, and their ambush on the west of the city; and Joshua went that night into the middle of the valley.
Et lorsque le peuple eut dressé tout son camp qui était au nord de la ville, tandis que l'embuscade se trouvait à l'occident de la ville, Josué s'avança cette nuit même au milieu de la vallée.
14 When the king of Ai saw it, they hurried and rose up early, and the men of the city went out against Israel to battle, he and all his people, at the time appointed, before the Arabah; but he didn’t know that there was an ambush against him behind the city.
Et lorsque le Roi d'Aï s'aperçut de cela, les hommes de la ville se levèrent en hâte et firent une sortie contre Israël, le Roi et tout le peuple se portant au point convenu devant la plaine. Or il ne se doutait pas de l'embuscade dressée contre lui derrière la ville.
15 Joshua and all Israel made as if they were beaten before them, and fled by the way of the wilderness.
Josué et tout Israël se laissèrent donc battre par eux, et s'enfuirent dans la direction du désert.
16 All the people who were in the city were called together to pursue after them. They pursued Joshua, and were drawn away from the city.
Alors tout le peuple resté dans la ville fut convoqué pour aller à leur poursuite; et ils poursuivirent Josué et furent attirés loin de la ville.
17 There was not a man left in Ai or Bethel who didn’t go out after Israel. They left the city open, and pursued Israel.
Et il ne resta dans Aï et dans Béthel pas un homme qui ne sortît pour poursuivre Israël; et ils laissèrent la ville ouverte, et ils poursuivaient Israël.
18 The LORD said to Joshua, “Stretch out the javelin that is in your hand towards Ai, for I will give it into your hand.” Joshua stretched out the javelin that was in his hand towards the city.
Alors l'Éternel dit à Josué: Étends contre Aï la pique que tu as à la main, car je vais la livrer entre tes mains; et Josué étendit contre la ville la pique qu'il avait à la main, et les gens embusqués sortirent en hâte de leur poste;
19 The ambush arose quickly out of their place, and they ran as soon as he had stretched out his hand and entered into the city and took it. They hurried and set the city on fire.
et comme il étendait sa main, ils accouraient; ils entrèrent dans la ville et la prirent, et aussitôt ils mirent le feu à la ville.
20 When the men of Ai looked behind them, they saw, and behold, the smoke of the city ascended up to heaven, and they had no power to flee this way or that way. The people who fled to the wilderness turned back on the pursuers.
Alors les gens d'Aï ramenèrent leurs regards en arrière, et ils virent; voilà que la fumée de la ville montait vers le ciel; et il n'y avait pour eux aucun moyen de fuir ni d'un côté ni de l'autre; et la troupe qui fuyait vers le désert se retourna contre ceux qui la poursuivaient.
21 When Joshua and all Israel saw that the ambush had taken the city, and that the smoke of the city ascended, then they turned back and killed the men of Ai.
Car Josué et tout Israël voyant la ville prise par les gens de l'embuscade, et la fumée de la ville, qui s'élevait, firent volte-face et mirent en déroute les hommes d'Aï.
22 The others came out of the city against them, so they were in the middle of Israel, some on this side, and some on that side. They struck them, so that they let none of them remain or escape.
Ceux-là étant ressortis de la ville à leur rencontre, ceux d'Aï étaient cernés par les Israélites, par les uns d'un côté, par les autres de l'autre. Et les Israélites les battirent à ne pas leur laisser un survivant, ni un réchappé.
23 They captured the king of Ai alive, and brought him to Joshua.
Et ils prirent vivant le Roi d'Aï et l'amenèrent à Josué.
24 When Israel had finished killing all the inhabitants of Ai in the field, in the wilderness in which they pursued them, and they had all fallen by the edge of the sword until they were consumed, all Israel returned to Ai and struck it with the edge of the sword.
Et lorsque Israël eut achevé le carnage des habitants d'Aï dans la campagne, le désert où ils l'avaient poursuivi, et qu'ils furent tous tombés, jusqu'au dernier, sous le tranchant de l'épée, tous les Israélites revinrent à Aï, et ils la mirent à sac avec le tranchant de l'épée.
25 All that fell that day, both of men and women, were twelve thousand, even all the people of Ai.
Et tous ceux qui périrent dans cette journée, hommes et femmes, furent au nombre de douze mille, tous gens d'Aï.
26 For Joshua didn’t draw back his hand, with which he stretched out the javelin, until he had utterly destroyed all the inhabitants of Ai.
Et Josué ne retira sa main qu'il tenait étendue avec la pique, que lorsque l'anathème fut exécuté sur tous les habitants d'Aï.
27 Israel took for themselves only the livestock and the goods of that city, according to the LORD’s word which he commanded Joshua.
Les Israélites ne prirent pour eux comme butin que le bétail et les dépouilles de cette ville, selon l'ordre que l'Éternel avait prescrit à Josué.
28 So Joshua burnt Ai and made it a heap forever, even a desolation, to this day.
Et Josué brûla Aï et en fit un monceau de ruines éternelles, jusqu'aujourd'hui.
29 He hanged the king of Ai on a tree until the evening. At sundown, Joshua commanded, and they took his body down from the tree and threw it at the entrance of the gate of the city, and raised a great heap of stones on it that remains to this day.
Quant au Roi d'Aï, il le pendit à un arbre jusqu'au soir, et avec le coucher du soleil il fit enlever de l'arbre son cadavre que l'on jeta à l'entrée de la porte de la ville, et sur lequel on éleva un grand tas de pierres, qui est demeuré jusqu'aujourd'hui.
30 Then Joshua built an altar to the LORD, the God of Israel, on Mount Ebal,
Alors Josué bâtit un autel à l'Éternel, Dieu d'Israël, sur le mont Ebal,
31 as Moses the servant of the LORD commanded the children of Israel, as it is written in the scroll of the Torah of Moses: an altar of uncut stones, on which no one had lifted up any iron. They offered burnt offerings on it to the LORD and sacrificed peace offerings.
ainsi que Moïse, serviteur de l'Éternel, l'avait ordonné aux enfants d'Israël, et qu'il est écrit dans le livre de la Loi de Moïse, un autel de pierres brutes que l'on ne piqua point avec le fer. Et ils y offrirent des holocaustes à l'Éternel, et y firent des sacrifices pacifiques.
32 He wrote there on the stones a copy of Moses’ law, which he wrote in the presence of the children of Israel.
Et là il grava sur les pierres la copie de la Loi de Moïse qu'il transcrivit en présence des enfants d'Israël.
33 All Israel, with their elders, officers, and judges, stood on both sides of the ark before the Levitical priests, who carried the ark of the LORD’s covenant, the foreigner as well as the native; half of them in front of Mount Gerizim, and half of them in front of Mount Ebal, as Moses the servant of the LORD had commanded at the first, that they should bless the people of Israel.
Et tous les Israélites et leurs Anciens et les Officiers et leurs Juges se tenaient des deux côtés de l'Arche devant les Prêtres, les Lévites, porteurs de l'Arche de l'Alliance de l'Éternel, les étrangers aussi bien que les nationaux, une moitié près du mont Garizim, et l'autre moitié près du mont Ebal, conformément à l'ordre donné précédemment par Moïse, serviteur de l'Éternel, de bénir le peuple d'Israël.
34 Afterward he read all the words of the law, the blessing and the curse, according to all that is written in the scroll of the Torah.
Et après cela il donna lecture de toutes les paroles de la Loi, bénédiction et malédiction, en tout point selon le texte du livre de la Loi.
35 There was not a word of all that Moses commanded which Joshua didn’t read before all the assembly of Israel, with the women, the little ones, and the foreigners who were amongst them.
Il n'y eut pas un mot de tout ce que Moïse prescrit, dont Josué ne donnât lecture devant toute l'Assemblée d'Israël, et les femmes et les enfants et les étrangers marchant au milieu d'eux.
