Acts 23
1 Paul, looking steadfastly at the council, said, “Brothers, I have lived before God in all good conscience until today.”
E, pondo Paulo os olhos no conselho, disse: Varões irmãos, até ao dia de hoje tenho andado diante de Deus com toda a boa consciencia.
2 The high priest, Ananias, commanded those who stood by him to strike him on the mouth.
Porém o summo sacerdote, Ananias, mandou então aos que estavam junto d'elle que o ferissem na bocca.
3 Then Paul said to him, “God will strike you, you whitewashed wall! Do you sit to judge me according to the Torah, and command me to be struck contrary to the law?”
Então Paulo lhe disse: Deus te ferirá, parede branqueada: tu estás aqui assentado para julgar-me conforme a lei, e contra a lei me mandas ferir?
4 Those who stood by said, “Do you malign God’s high priest?”
E os que ali estavam disseram: Injurias o summo sacerdote de Deus?
5 Paul said, “I didn’t know, brothers, that he was high priest. For it is written, ‘You shall not speak evil of a ruler of your people.’”
E Paulo disse: Não sabia, irmãos, que era o summo sacerdote; porque está escripto: Não dirás mal do principe do teu povo
6 But when Paul perceived that the one part were Sadducees and the other Pharisees, he cried out in the council, “Men and brothers, I am a Pharisee, a son of Pharisees. Concerning the hope and resurrection of the dead I am being judged!”
E Paulo, sabendo que uma parte era de sadduceos e outra de phariseos, clamou no conselho: Varões irmãos, eu sou phariseo, filho de phariseo, no tocante á esperança e resurreição dos mortos sou julgado.
7 When he had said this, an argument arose between the Pharisees and Sadducees, and the crowd was divided.
E, havendo dito isto, houve dissensão entre os phariseos e sadduceos; e a multidão se dividiu.
8 For the Sadducees say that there is no resurrection, nor angel, nor spirit; but the Pharisees confess all of these.
Porque os sadduceos dizem que não ha resurreição, nem anjo, nem espirito; mas os phariseos confessam ambas as coisas.
9 A great clamour arose, and some of the scribes of the Pharisees’ part stood up, and contended, saying, “We find no evil in this man. But if a spirit or angel has spoken to him, let’s not fight against God!”
E originou-se um grande clamor; e, levantando-se os escribas da parte dos phariseos, contendiam, dizendo: Nenhum mal achamos n'este homem, e, se algum espirito ou anjo lhe fallou, não resistamos a Deus.
10 When a great argument arose, the commanding officer, fearing that Paul would be torn in pieces by them, commanded the soldiers to go down and take him by force from amongst them and bring him into the barracks.
E, havendo grande dissensão, o tribuno, temendo que Paulo fosse despedaçado por elles, mandou descer a soldadesca, e arrebatal-o do meio d'elles, e leval-o para a fortaleza.
11 The following night, the Lord stood by him and said, “Cheer up, Paul, for as you have testified about me at Jerusalem, so you must testify also at Rome.”
E na noite seguinte, apresentando-se-lhe o Senhor, disse: Paulo, tem animo: porque, como de mim testificaste em Jerusalem, assim te importa testificar tambem em Roma.
12 When it was day, some of the Judeans banded together and bound themselves under a curse, saying that they would neither eat nor drink until they had killed Paul.
E, vindo o dia, alguns dos judeos fizeram uma conspiração, e se conjuraram, dizendo que não comeriam nem beberiam, emquanto não matassem a Paulo.
13 There were more than forty people who had made this conspiracy.
E eram mais de quarenta os que fizeram esta conjuração.
14 They came to the chief priests and the elders, and said, “We have bound ourselves under a great curse to taste nothing until we have killed Paul.
Os quaes foram aos principaes dos sacerdotes e aos anciãos, e disseram: Conjurámo-nos, sob pena de maldição, que nada provaremos, até que matemos a Paulo.
15 Now therefore, you with the council inform the commanding officer that he should bring him down to you tomorrow, as though you were going to judge his case more exactly. We are ready to kill him before he comes near.”
Agora, pois, vós, com o conselho, fazei saber ao tribuno que vol-o traga ámanhã, como que querendo saber mais alguma coisa de seus negocios, e, antes que chegue, estaremos promptos para o matar.
16 But Paul’s sister’s son heard they were lying in wait, and he came and entered into the barracks and told Paul.
E o filho da irmã de Paulo, ouvindo estas ciladas, foi, e entrou na fortaleza, e o annunciou a Paulo.
17 Paul summoned one of the centurions and said, “Bring this young man to the commanding officer, for he has something to tell him.”
E Paulo, chamando a si um dos centuriões, disse: Leva este mancebo ao tribuno, porque tem alguma coisa que lhe communicar.
18 So he took him and brought him to the commanding officer and said, “Paul, the prisoner, summoned me and asked me to bring this young man to you. He has something to tell you.”
Tomando-o elle, pois, o levou ao tribuno, e disse: O preso Paulo, chamando-me a si, me rogou que te trouxesse este mancebo, que tem alguma coisa que dizer-te.
19 The commanding officer took him by the hand, and going aside, asked him privately, “What is it that you have to tell me?”
E o tribuno, tomando-o pela mão, e pondo-se á parte perguntou-lhe em particular: Que tens que me denunciar?
20 He said, “The Judeans have agreed to ask you to bring Paul down to the council tomorrow, as though intending to enquire somewhat more accurately concerning him.
E disse elle: Os judeos se concertaram rogar-te que ámanhã leves Paulo ao conselho, como que tendo a inquirir d'elle mais alguma coisa ao certo:
21 Therefore don’t yield to them, for more than forty men lie in wait for him, who have bound themselves under a curse to neither eat nor drink until they have killed him. Now they are ready, looking for the promise from you.”
Porém tu não os creias; porque mais de quarenta homens d'entre elles lhe andam armando ciladas: os quaes se obrigaram, sob pena de maldição, a não comerem nem beberem, até que o tenham morto: e já estão apercebidos, esperando a tua promessa.
22 So the commanding officer let the young man go, charging him, “Tell no one that you have revealed these things to me.”
Então o tribuno despediu o mancebo, mandando-lhe que a ninguem dissesse que lhe havia manifestado aquillo.
23 He called to himself two of the centurions, and said, “Prepare two hundred soldiers to go as far as Caesarea, with seventy horsemen and two hundred men armed with spears, at the third hour of the night.”
E, chamando a si dois centuriões, lhes disse: Apromptae para as tres horas da noite duzentos soldados, e setenta de cavallo, e duzentos archeiros para irem até Cesarea;
24 He asked them to provide mounts, that they might set Paul on one, and bring him safely to Felix the governor.
E apparelhae cavalgaduras, para que, pondo n'ellas a Paulo, o levem a salvo ao presidente Felix.
25 He wrote a letter like this:
Escreveu uma carta, que continha isto:
26 “Claudius Lysias to the most excellent governor Felix: Greetings.
Claudio Lysias, a Felix, potentissimo presidente, saude.
27 “This man was seized by the Judeans, and was about to be killed by them when I came with the soldiers and rescued him, having learnt that he was a Roman.
Esse homem foi preso pelos judeos; e, estando já a ponto de ser morto por elles, sobrevim eu com a soldadesca, e lh'o tomei, informado de que era romano.
28 Desiring to know the cause why they accused him, I brought him down to their council.
E, querendo saber a causa por que o accusavam, o levei ao seu conselho.
29 I found him to be accused about questions of their law, but not to be charged with anything worthy of death or of imprisonment.
E achei que o accusavam de algumas questões da sua lei: mas que nenhum crime havia n'elle digno de morte ou de prisão.
30 When I was told that the Judeans lay in wait for the man, I sent him to you immediately, charging his accusers also to bring their accusations against him before you. Farewell.”
E, sendo-me notificado que os judeos haviam de armar ciladas a esse homem, logo t'o enviei, mandando tambem aos accusadores que perante ti digam o que tiverem contra elle. Passa bem.
31 So the soldiers, carrying out their orders, took Paul and brought him by night to Antipatris.
Tomando pois os soldados a Paulo, como lhe fôra mandado, o trouxeram de noite a Antipatris.
32 But on the next day they left the horsemen to go with him, and returned to the barracks.
E no dia seguinte, deixando aos de cavallo irem com elle, tornaram á fortaleza.
33 When they came to Caesarea and delivered the letter to the governor, they also presented Paul to him.
Os quaes, logo que chegaram a Cesarea, e entregaram a carta ao presidente, lhe apresentaram Paulo.
34 When the governor had read it, he asked what province he was from. When he understood that he was from Cilicia, he said,
E o presidente, lida a carta, perguntou de que provincia era; e, entendendo que da Cilicia,
35 “I will hear you fully when your accusers also arrive.” He commanded that he be kept in Herod’s palace.
Ouvir-te-hei, disse, quando tambem aqui vierem os teus accusadores. E mandou que o guardassem no pretorio de Herodes.
