Acts 23

1 Paul, looking steadfastly at the council, said, “Brothers, I have lived before God in all good conscience until today.”

پولس در حالی که به اعضای شورا خیره شده بود گفت: «ای برادران، من همیشه نزد خدا با وجدانی پاک زندگی کرده‌ام!»

2 The high priest, Ananias, commanded those who stood by him to strike him on the mouth.

بلافاصله حنانیا، کاهن اعظم، به اشخاصی که نزدیک پولس بودند، دستور داد تا بر دهانش بزنند.

3 Then Paul said to him, “God will strike you, you whitewashed wall! Do you sit to judge me according to the Torah, and command me to be struck contrary to the law?”

پولس به او گفت: «ای خوش‌ظاهرِ بدباطن، خدا تو را خواهد زد! تو آنجا نشسته‌ای تا مرا طبق احکام شرع قضاوت کنی، اما خودت شریعت را زیر پا می‌گذاری، چون دستور می‌دهی مرا به این شکل بزنند!»

4 Those who stood by said, “Do you malign God’s high priest?”

کسانی که نزدیک پولس ایستاده بودند، به او گفتند: «به کاهن اعظمِ خدا اهانت می‌کنی؟»

5 Paul said, “I didn’t know, brothers, that he was high priest. For it is written, ‘You shall not speak evil of a ruler of your people.’”

پولس جواب داد: «برادران، نمی‌دانستم که او کاهن اعظم است، زیرا نوشته شده: به سران قوم خود بد مگو.»

6 But when Paul perceived that the one part were Sadducees and the other Pharisees, he cried out in the council, “Men and brothers, I am a Pharisee, a son of Pharisees. Concerning the hope and resurrection of the dead I am being judged!”

آنگاه پولس که پی برده بود گروهی از اعضای شورا صدوقی هستند و گروهی دیگر فریسی، با صدای بلند گفت: «ای برادران، من فریسی هستم. تمام اجدادم نیز فریسی بوده‌اند! و امروز به این دلیل اینجا محاکمه می‌شوم که به قیامت مردگان اعتقاد دارم!»

7 When he had said this, an argument arose between the Pharisees and Sadducees, and the crowd was divided.

این سخن در میان اعضای شورا جدایی انداخت و فریسیان به مخالفت با صدوقیان برخاستند.

8 For the Sadducees say that there is no resurrection, nor angel, nor spirit; but the Pharisees confess all of these.

زیرا صدوقیان معتقد بودند که زندگی بعد از مرگ و فرشته و روح وجود ندارد، در صورتی که فریسی‌ها به تمام اینها اعتقاد داشتند.

9 A great clamour arose, and some of the scribes of the Pharisees’ part stood up, and contended, saying, “We find no evil in this man. But if a spirit or angel has spoken to him, let’s not fight against God!”

به این طریق، جنجالی برپا شد. در این میان عده‌ای از علمای دین که فریسی بودند، برخاستند و با اعتراض گفتند: «ما خطایی در این شخص نمی‌یابیم. شاید در راه دمشق روح یا فرشته‌ای با او سخن گفته باشد.»

10 When a great argument arose, the commanding officer, fearing that Paul would be torn in pieces by them, commanded the soldiers to go down and take him by force from amongst them and bring him into the barracks.

جدال چنان بالا گرفت که فرمانده ترسید پولس را تکه‌تکه کنند، پس به سربازان دستور داد او را از چنگ مردم بیرون آورده، به داخل قلعه بازگردانند.

11 The following night, the Lord stood by him and said, “Cheer up, Paul, for as you have testified about me at Jerusalem, so you must testify also at Rome.”

آن شب خداوند در کنار پولس ایستاد و به او فرمود: «پولس، دل قوی دار! همان‌طور که اینجا با مردم دربارهٔ من سخن گفتی، در روم نیز سخن خواهی گفت.»

12 When it was day, some of the Judeans banded together and bound themselves under a curse, saying that they would neither eat nor drink until they had killed Paul.

صبح روز بعد، گروهی از یهودیان جمع شدند و سوگند یاد کردند که تا پولس را نکشند، نه چیزی بخورند و نه چیزی بنوشند!

13 There were more than forty people who had made this conspiracy.

شمار کسانی که در این توطئه دخیل بودند، بیش از چهل نفر بود.

14 They came to the chief priests and the elders, and said, “We have bound ourselves under a great curse to taste nothing until we have killed Paul.

آنها نزد کاهنان اعظم و مشایخ رفتند و تصمیم خود را با آنان در میان گذاشته، گفتند: «ما قسم خورده‌ایم تا پولس را نکشیم لب به غذا نزنیم.

15 Now therefore, you with the council inform the commanding officer that he should bring him down to you tomorrow, as though you were going to judge his case more exactly. We are ready to kill him before he comes near.”

شما و اهل شورا به فرماندهٔ هنگ بگویید که بار دیگر پولس را به شورا بفرستد، به این بهانه که می‌خواهید دربارۀ او بیشتر تحقیق کنید. آنگاه ما در بین راه او را خواهیم کشت.»

16 But Paul’s sister’s son heard they were lying in wait, and he came and entered into the barracks and told Paul.

ولی خواهرزادهٔ پولس به نقشهٔ آنان پی برد و به قلعه آمد و پولس را از این امر آگاه ساخت.

17 Paul summoned one of the centurions and said, “Bring this young man to the commanding officer, for he has something to tell him.”

پولس یکی از مأموران را صدا زد و گفت: «این جوان را نزد فرمانده ببر، چون می‌خواهد خبر مهمی به او بدهد.»

18 So he took him and brought him to the commanding officer and said, “Paul, the prisoner, summoned me and asked me to bring this young man to you. He has something to tell you.”

مأمور او را پیش فرمانده برد و گفت: «پولس زندانی، مرا صدا زد و خواهش کرد این جوان را نزد شما بیاورم تا خبری به عرضتان برساند.»

19 The commanding officer took him by the hand, and going aside, asked him privately, “What is it that you have to tell me?”

فرمانده دست پسر را گرفت و به گوشه‌ای برد و از او پرسید: «چه می‌خواهی بگویی؟»

20 He said, “The Judeans have agreed to ask you to bring Paul down to the council tomorrow, as though intending to enquire somewhat more accurately concerning him.

گفت: «همین فردا یهودیان می‌خواهند از شما خواهش کنند که پولس را به شورا ببرید، به بهانهٔ اینکه می‌خواهند تحقیق بیشتری دربارۀ او بکنند.

21 Therefore don’t yield to them, for more than forty men lie in wait for him, who have bound themselves under a curse to neither eat nor drink until they have killed him. Now they are ready, looking for the promise from you.”

ولی خواهش می‌کنم شما این کار را نکنید! چون بیش از چهل نفرشان کمین کرده‌اند تا بر سر او بریزند و او را بکشند. قسم نیز خورده‌اند که تا او را نکشند، نه چیزی بخورند و نه چیزی بنوشند. حالا همه حاضر و آماده‌اند، فقط منتظرند که شما با درخواستشان موافقت کنید.»

22 So the commanding officer let the young man go, charging him, “Tell no one that you have revealed these things to me.”

وقتی آن جوان می‌رفت، فرمانده به او گفت: «به کسی نگو که این موضوع را به من گفته‌ای.»

23 He called to himself two of the centurions, and said, “Prepare two hundred soldiers to go as far as Caesarea, with seventy horsemen and two hundred men armed with spears, at the third hour of the night.”

سپس فرمانده دو نفر از افسران خود را احضار کرد و به ایشان دستور داده، گفت: «دویست سرباز پیاده، دویست نیزه‌دار و هفتاد سواره نظام آماده کنید تا امشب ساعت نُه به قیصریه بروند.

24 He asked them to provide mounts, that they might set Paul on one, and bring him safely to Felix the governor.

یک اسب هم برای پولس آماده کنید تا سوار شود، و او را صحیح و سالم نزد فِلیکْسِ فرماندار برسانید.»

25 He wrote a letter like this:

این نامه را هم برای فرماندار نوشت:

26 “Claudius Lysias to the most excellent governor Felix: Greetings.

«کلودیوس لیسیاس به جناب فِلیکْس، فرماندار گرامی سلام می‌رساند.

27 “This man was seized by the Judeans, and was about to be killed by them when I came with the soldiers and rescued him, having learnt that he was a Roman.

یهودیان این مرد را گرفته بودند و می‌خواستند او را بکشند. وقتی فهمیدم رومی است، سربازانی فرستادم و نجاتش دادم.

28 Desiring to know the cause why they accused him, I brought him down to their council.

سپس او را به شورای ایشان بردم تا معلوم شود چه کرده است.

29 I found him to be accused about questions of their law, but not to be charged with anything worthy of death or of imprisonment.

متوجه شدم دعوا بر سر عقاید یهودی خودشان است و البته چیزی نبود که بشود به سبب آن او را زندانی یا اعدام کرد.

30 When I was told that the Judeans lay in wait for the man, I sent him to you immediately, charging his accusers also to bring their accusations against him before you. Farewell.”

اما وقتی آگاه شدم که توطئه چیده‌اند تا او را بکشند، تصمیم گرفتم وی را به حضور شما بفرستم. به هر کس هم که از او شکایت داشته باشد می‌گویم به حضور شما بیاید.»

31 So the soldiers, carrying out their orders, took Paul and brought him by night to Antipatris.

پس همان شب سربازان مطابق دستور فرماندهٔ خود، پولس را به شهر آنتی پاتریس رسانیدند.

32 But on the next day they left the horsemen to go with him, and returned to the barracks.

صبح روز بعد پولس را تحویل سواره نظام دادند تا او را به قیصریه ببرند و خود به قلعه بازگشتند.

33 When they came to Caesarea and delivered the letter to the governor, they also presented Paul to him.

وقتی به قیصریه رسیدند، پولس را با نامه به فرماندار تحویل دادند.

34 When the governor had read it, he asked what province he was from. When he understood that he was from Cilicia, he said,

فرماندار نامه را خواند. سپس از پولس پرسید: «اهل کجایی؟» پولس جواب داد: «اهل قیلیقیه هستم.»

35 “I will hear you fully when your accusers also arrive.” He commanded that he be kept in Herod’s palace.

فرماندار به او گفت: «هرگاه شاکیانت برسند، به پرونده‌ات رسیدگی خواهم کرد.» سپس، دستور داد که او را در قصر هیرودیس پادشاه نگه دارند.
