John 6
1 After these things, Jesus went away to the other side of the sea of Galilee, which is also called the Sea of Tiberias.
こうした事ののち，イエスはティベリアスの海とも呼ばれるガリラヤの海の向こう岸へ出発した。
2 A great multitude followed him, because they saw his signs which he did on those who were sick.
大群衆が彼に従った。彼が病気の人に対して行なったしるしを見たからである。
3 Jesus went up into the mountain, and he sat there with his disciples.
イエスは山の中に上って行き，弟子たちと共にそこに座った。
4 Now the Passover, the feast of the Jews, was at hand.
ところで，ユダヤ人の過ぎ越しの祭りが近づいていた。
5 Jesus therefore, lifting up his eyes and seeing that a great multitude was coming to him, said to Philip, “Where are we to buy bread, that these may eat?”
それで，イエスは目を上げて，大群衆が自分のもとに来ているのを見ると，フィリポに言った，「この人々に食べさせるために，どこでパンを買えるだろうか」 。
6 He said this to test him, for he himself knew what he would do.
イエスは彼を試すためにこのことを言った。自分が行なおうとしていることを知っていたからである。
7 Philip answered him, “Two hundred denarii worth of bread is not sufficient for them, that every one of them may receive a little.”
フィリポは答えた，「みんなが少しずつ受け取るとしても，二百デナリ分のパンでも彼らのためには十分ではないでしょう」。
8 One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, said to him,
弟子の一人で，シモン・ペトロの兄弟アンデレが言った，
9 “There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish, but what are these among so many?”
「ここに，大麦のパン五つと二匹の魚を持っている少年がいます。それでも，こんなに大勢の人の間ではいったい何になるでしょう」。
10 Jesus said, “Have the people sit down.” Now there was much grass in that place. So the men sat down, in number about five thousand.
イエスは言った，「人々を座らせなさい」 。ところで，その場所には草がたくさんあった。そこで人々は座った。数にして，およそ五千人であった。
11 Jesus took the loaves, and having given thanks, he distributed to the disciples, and the disciples to those who were sitting down, likewise also of the fish as much as they desired.
イエスはパンを取り，感謝をささげてから，弟子たちに配り，弟子たちが座っている者たちに配った。魚も同じようにして，人々が望むだけ配った。
12 When they were filled, he said to his disciples, “Gather up the broken pieces which are left over, that nothing be lost.”
人々が満ち足りると，弟子たちに言った，「何も無駄にならないように，残された切れ端を拾い集めなさい」 。
13 So they gathered them up, and filled twelve baskets with broken pieces from the five barley loaves, which were left over by those who had eaten.
そこで彼らは拾い集め，大麦のパン五つから出た切れ端で十二のかごを一杯にした。それは，食べた人々が残したものであった。
14 When therefore the people saw the sign which Jesus did, they said, “This is truly the prophet who comes into the world.”
そのため，イエスの行なったしるしを見たとき，人々は言った，「これこそ本当に，世に来ることになっている預言者だ」。
15 Jesus therefore, perceiving that they were about to come and take him by force to make him king, withdrew again to the mountain by himself.
それでイエスは，人々が来て，自分を王とするために力ずくで連れて行こうとしているのに気づき，ひとりで再び山へ退いた。
16 When evening came, his disciples went down to the sea.
夕方になった時，弟子たちは海に下りて行った。
17 They entered into the boat, and were going over the sea to Capernaum. It was now dark, and Jesus had not come to them.
そして彼らは舟に乗り込み，カペルナウムに向けて海を渡った。すでに暗くなっていたが，イエスは彼らのもとへ来ていなかった。
18 The sea was tossed by a great wind blowing.
大風が吹いて，海は荒れていた。
19 When therefore they had rowed about twenty-five or thirty stadia, they saw Jesus walking on the sea and drawing near to the boat; and they were afraid.
それで，二十五ないし三十スタディアほどこいできたとき，彼らは海の上を歩いて舟に近づいて来るイエスを見た。それで彼らは恐れた。
20 But he said to them, “It is I. Don’t be afraid.”
しかし彼は彼らに言った，「わたしはある。恐れてはいけない」 。
21 They were willing therefore to receive him into the boat. Immediately the boat was at the land where they were going.
それで彼らは彼を舟の中に迎えようとした。すぐに舟は彼らが向かっていた土地に着いた。
22 On the next day, the multitude that stood on the other side of the sea saw that there was no other boat there, except the one in which his disciples had embarked, and that Jesus hadn’t entered with his disciples into the boat, but his disciples had gone away alone.
次の日，湖の向こう岸に立っていた大群衆は，弟子たちが乗り込んだ一そうのほかにはそこに舟がなかったこと，またイエスが弟子たちと共に舟に乗ることなく，弟子たちだけで出発したことに気が付いた。
23 However, boats from Tiberias came near to the place where they ate the bread after the Lord had given thanks.
しかしながら，主が感謝をささげてから彼らがパンを食べた場所の近くの岸に，ティベリアスから数そうの舟が来た。
24 When the multitude therefore saw that Jesus wasn’t there, nor his disciples, they themselves got into the boats and came to Capernaum, seeking Jesus.
それで群衆は，そこにイエスも弟子たちもいないことに気が付くと，舟に乗り込み，イエスを探してカペルナウムに来た。
25 When they found him on the other side of the sea, they asked him, “Rabbi, when did you come here?”
湖の向こう岸で彼を見つけると，彼らは尋ねた，「ラビ，いつここにおいでになったのですか」。
26 Jesus answered them, “Most certainly I tell you, you seek me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate of the loaves and were filled.
イエスは彼らに答えた，「本当にはっきりとあなた方に告げる。あなた方がわたしを探しているのは，しるしを見たからではなく，パンを食べて満ち足りたからだ。
27 Don’t work for the food which perishes, but for the food which remains to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you. For God the Father has sealed him.” (aiōnios g166)
滅びる食物のためではなく，永遠の命へと残る食物のために働きなさい。それは人の子があなた方に与えるものだ。神なる父が彼に証印を押されたからだ」 。 (aiōnios g166)
28 They said therefore to him, “What must we do, that we may work the works of God?”
それで彼らは彼に言った，「神の業を行なうために，わたしたちは何をしなければなりませんか」。
29 Jesus answered them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent.”
イエスは彼らに答えた，「その方が遣わされた者を信じること，これが神の業だ」 。
30 They said therefore to him, “What then do you do for a sign, that we may see and believe you? What work do you do?
それで彼らは彼に言った，「わたしたちがそれを見てあなたを信じることができるよう，どんなしるしを行なわれるのですか。あなたはどんな業を行なってくださいますか。
31 Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness. As it is written, ‘He gave them bread out of heaven to eat.’”
わたしたちの父祖たちは荒野でマンナを食べました。『天からパンを与えて彼らに食べさせた』と書いてあるとおりです」。
32 Jesus therefore said to them, “Most certainly, I tell you, it wasn’t Moses who gave you the bread out of heaven, but my Father gives you the true bread out of heaven.
それでイエスは彼らに言った，「本当にはっきりとあなた方に告げる。あなた方に天からのパンを与えたのはモーセではない。だが，わたしの父はあなた方に天からの真のパンを与えておられる。
33 For the bread of God is that which comes down out of heaven and gives life to the world.”
神のパンは，天から下って来て世に命を与えるものだからだ」 。
34 They said therefore to him, “Lord, always give us this bread.”
それで彼らは彼に言った，「主よ，このパンをいつもわたしたちにお与えください」。
35 Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will not be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.
イエスは彼らに言った，「わたしがその命のパンだ。わたしのところに来る者は決して飢えることがなく，わたしを信じる者は決して渇くことがない。
36 But I told you that you have seen me, and yet you don’t believe.
だが，わたしはあなた方に告げた。あなた方はわたしを見たのに信じないと。
37 All those whom the Father gives me will come to me. He who comes to me I will in no way throw out.
父がわたしにお与えになる者はみな，わたしのところに来る。わたしのところに来た者を，わたしは決して追い払わない。
38 For I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will, but the will of him who sent me.
わたしが天から下って来たのは，自分の意志ではなく，わたしを遣わした方のご意志を行なうためだからだ。
39 This is the will of my Father who sent me, that of all he has given to me I should lose nothing, but should raise him up at the last day.
わたしを遣わしたわたしの父のご意志とは，その方がわたしに与えられたすべての者をわたしが一人も失わずに，終わりの日にその者を生き返らせることだ。
40 This is the will of the one who sent me, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in him should have eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day.” (aiōnios g166)
わたしを遣わした方のご意志とは，子を見て信じる者がみな永遠の命を持ち，わたしが終わりの日に彼らすべてを生き返らせることだ」 。 (aiōnios g166)
41 The Jews therefore murmured concerning him, because he said, “I am the bread which came down out of heaven.”
それでユダヤ人たちは，彼が「わたしが天から下って来たパンだ」 と言ったことで，彼に関してつぶやいた。
42 They said, “Isn’t this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How then does he say, ‘I have come down out of heaven’?”
彼らは言った，「このイエスはヨセフの子であり，我々はその父と母を知っているではないか。それならどうして『わたしは天から下って来た』 と言うのだろう」。
43 Therefore Jesus answered them, “Don’t murmur among yourselves.
それでイエスは彼らに答えた，「互いにつぶやくのはやめなさい。
44 No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him; and I will raise him up in the last day.
わたしを遣わした父が引き寄せてくださるのでなければ，だれもわたしのところに来ることはできない。そして，わたしは終わりの日にその人を生き返らせる。
45 It is written in the prophets, ‘They will all be taught by God.’ Therefore everyone who hears from the Father and has learned, comes to me.
預言者たちの中に，『彼らはみな神によって教えられるだろう』と書いてある。それで，父から聞いて学んだ者はみなわたしのところへ来る。
46 Not that anyone has seen the Father, except he who is from God. He has seen the Father.
神からの者のほかには，だれも父を見た者はいない。その者が父を見たのだ。
本当にはっきりとあなた方に告げる。わたしを信じる者は永遠の命を持っている。 (aiōnios g166)
48 I am the bread of life.
わたしは命のパンだ。
49 Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness and they died.
あなた方の父祖たちは荒野でマンナを食べたが，死んでしまった。
50 This is the bread which comes down out of heaven, that anyone may eat of it and not die.
これは，だれでもそれから食べてなお死なないようにするために，天から下って来るパンだ。
51 I am the living bread which came down out of heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. Yes, the bread which I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.” (aiōn g165)
わたしは天から下って来た生きたパンだ。だれでもこのパンから食べる者は永遠に生きる。そう，世の命のためにわたしが与えるパンは，わたしの肉だ」 。 (aiōn g165)
52 The Jews therefore contended with one another, saying, “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?”
それでユダヤ人たちは互いに論じ合って言った，「この人はどうやって自分の肉を与えて我々に食べさせることができるのか」。
53 Jesus therefore said to them, “Most certainly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you don’t have life in yourselves.
それでイエスは彼らに言った，「本当にはっきりとあなた方に告げる。人の子の肉を食べ，その血を飲まないなら，あなた方は自分の内に命を持っていない。
54 He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. (aiōnios g166)
わたしの肉を食べ，わたしの血を飲む者は永遠の命を持っている。そして，わたしはその者を終わりの日に生き返らせる。 (aiōnios g166)
55 For my flesh is food indeed, and my blood is drink indeed.
わたしの肉は本当の食物であり，わたしの血は本当の飲み物だからだ。
56 He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood lives in me, and I in him.
わたしの肉を食べ，わたしの血を飲む者はわたしの内にとどまっており，わたしも彼の内にとどまっている。
57 As the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so he who feeds on me will also live because of me.
生ける父がわたしを遣わされ，わたしが父によって生きているのと同じように，わたしを食物とする者はわたしによって生きる。
58 This is the bread which came down out of heaven—not as our fathers ate the manna and died. He who eats this bread will live forever.” (aiōn g165)
これは天から下って来たパンだ。これは，わたしたちの父祖たちが食べても死んだようなものではない。このパンを食べる者は永遠に生きる」 。 (aiōn g165)
59 He said these things in the synagogue, as he taught in Capernaum.
カペルナウムで教えていた際，彼は会堂でこれらの事を言った。
60 Therefore many of his disciples, when they heard this, said, “This is a hard saying! Who can listen to it?”
それで大勢の弟子たちは，この事を聞いて，こう言った。「わけが分からない。だれがこれを聞いていられようか」。
61 But Jesus knowing in himself that his disciples murmured at this, said to them, “Does this cause you to stumble?
しかしイエスは，弟子たちがこのことでつぶやいているのを自分の内で知っていて，彼らに言った，「このことがあなた方をつまずかせるのか。
62 Then what if you would see the Son of Man ascending to where he was before?
それなら，自分が以前いた所へ上って行く人の子を見たならどうだろう。
63 It is the spirit who gives life. The flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and are life.
命を与えるものは霊だ。肉は少しも益にならない。わたしがあなた方に語った言葉は霊であり，命だ。
64 But there are some of you who don’t believe.” For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were who didn’t believe, and who it was who would betray him.
だが，あなた方のうちのある者は信じていない」 。というのは，イエスは，信じていない者，また自分を売り渡す者を，はじめから知っていたからである。
65 He said, “For this cause I have said to you that no one can come to me, unless it is given to him by my Father.”
彼は言った，「この理由のために，わたしはあなた方に，父が与えてくださったのでなければ，だれもわたしのところに来ることはできないと言ったのだ」 。
66 At this, many of his disciples went back and walked no more with him.
このために，大勢の弟子たちが戻って行き，もはや彼と共に歩かなかった。
67 Jesus said therefore to the twelve, “You don’t also want to go away, do you?”
それでイエスは十二人に言った，「あなた方も去って行こうと思っているわけではないだろう」 。
68 Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom would we go? You have the words of eternal life. (aiōnios g166)
シモン・ペトロが彼に答えた，「主よ，わたしたちはだれのところへ行きましょう。あなたは永遠の命の言葉を持っておられます。 (aiōnios g166)
69 We have come to believe and know that you are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”
わたしたちは，あなたがキリスト，生ける神の子だということを，信じ，知るようになりました」。
70 Jesus answered them, “Didn’t I choose you, the twelve, and one of you is a devil?”
イエスは彼らに答えた，「わたしがあなた方十二人を選んだのではないか。だが，あなた方のうちの一人は悪魔だ」 。
71 Now he spoke of Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, for it was he who would betray him, being one of the twelve.
ところで，彼はシモン・イスカリオトの子ユダに関して話したのであった。十二人の一人でありながら，彼を売り渡そうとしていたからである。
