John 19
1 So Pilate then took Jesus and flogged him.
Alors Pilate prit Jésus et le fit battre de verges.
2 The soldiers twisted thorns into a crown and put it on his head, and dressed him in a purple garment.
Les soldats, ayant tressé une couronne d'épines, la lui mirent sur la tête, et ils le revêtirent d'un manteau de pourpre. Puis, s'approchant,
3 They kept saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!” and they kept slapping him.
ils lui dirent: Salut, roi des Juifs! Et ils lui donnaient des soufflets.
4 Then Pilate went out again, and said to them, “Behold, I bring him out to you, that you may know that I find no basis for a charge against him.”
Pilate sortit encore une fois et leur dit: Le voici, je vous l'amène dehors, afin que vous sachiez que je ne trouve aucun crime en lui.
5 Jesus therefore came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple garment. Pilate said to them, “Behold, the man!”
Jésus sortit donc, portant la couronne d'épines et le manteau de pourpre; et Pilate leur dit: Voici l'homme!
6 When therefore the chief priests and the officers saw him, they shouted, saying, “Crucify! Crucify!” Pilate said to them, “Take him yourselves and crucify him, for I find no basis for a charge against him.”
Mais quand les principaux sacrificateurs et leurs agents le virent, ils s'écrièrent: Crucifie-le! Crucifie-le! Pilate leur dit: Prenez-le vous-mêmes et crucifiez-le; car pour moi, je ne trouve aucun crime en lui.
7 The Jews answered him, “We have a law, and by our law he ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God.”
Les Juifs reprirent: Nous avons une loi, et d'après cette loi, il doit mourir, parce qu'il s'est fait le Fils de Dieu.
8 When therefore Pilate heard this saying, he was more afraid.
Quand Pilate eut entendu cette parole, il eut encore plus de crainte.
9 He entered into the Praetorium again, and said to Jesus, “Where are you from?” But Jesus gave him no answer.
Il rentra de nouveau dans le prétoire et dit à Jésus: D'où es-tu? Mais Jésus ne lui fit aucune réponse.
10 Pilate therefore said to him, “Aren’t you speaking to me? Don’t you know that I have power to release you and have power to crucify you?”
Pilate lui dit: Tu ne me dis rien? Ne sais-tu pas que j'ai le pouvoir de te délivrer et le pouvoir de te crucifier?
11 Jesus answered, “You would have no power at all against me, unless it were given to you from above. Therefore he who delivered me to you has greater sin.”
Jésus répondit: Tu n'aurais aucun pouvoir sur moi, s'il ne t'avait pas été donné d'en haut; c'est pourquoi, celui qui m'a livré à toi est coupable d'un plus grand péché.
12 At this, Pilate was seeking to release him, but the Jews cried out, saying, “If you release this man, you aren’t Caesar’s friend! Everyone who makes himself a king speaks against Caesar!”
Depuis ce moment, Pilate cherchait à le délivrer; mais les Juifs criaient: Si tu délivres cet homme, tu n'es pas ami de César. Quiconque se fait roi se déclare contre César!
13 When Pilate therefore heard these words, he brought Jesus out and sat down on the judgment seat at a place called “The Pavement”, but in Hebrew, “Gabbatha.”
Pilate ayant entendu ces paroles, mena Jésus dehors et s'assit sur le tribunal, au lieu appelé le Pavé, en hébreu Gabbatha.
14 Now it was the Preparation Day of the Passover, at about the sixth hour. He said to the Jews, “Behold, your King!”
Or, c'était le jour de la préparation de la Pâque, environ la sixième heure. Et Pilate dit aux Juifs: Voilà votre roi!
15 They cried out, “Away with him! Away with him! Crucify him!” Pilate said to them, “Shall I crucify your King?” The chief priests answered, “We have no king but Caesar!”
Ceux-ci se mirent à crier: Ote-le, ôte-le! Crucifie-le! Pilate leur dit: Crucifierai-je votre roi? Les principaux sacrificateurs répondirent: Nous n'avons pas d'autre roi que César.
16 So then he delivered him to them to be crucified. So they took Jesus and led him away.
Alors il le leur livra pour être crucifié. Ils prirent donc Jésus et l'emmenèrent.
17 He went out, bearing his cross, to the place called “The Place of a Skull”, which is called in Hebrew, “Golgotha”,
Jésus, portant sa croix, arriva hors de la ville au lieu appelé le Crâne, qui se nomme en hébreu Golgotha.
18 where they crucified him, and with him two others, on either side one, and Jesus in the middle.
C'est là qu'ils le crucifièrent, et deux autres avec lui, un de chaque côté, et Jésus au milieu.
19 Pilate wrote a title also, and put it on the cross. There was written, “JESUS OF NAZARETH, THE KING OF THE JEWS.”
Pilate fit aussi faire un écriteau qu'il plaça au-dessus de la croix. On y avait écrit: Jésus de Nazareth, le roi des Juifs.
20 Therefore many of the Jews read this title, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city; and it was written in Hebrew, in Latin, and in Greek.
Beaucoup de Juifs lurent cet écriteau, parce que le lieu où Jésus fut crucifié était près de la ville, et que l'inscription était en hébreu, en latin et en grec.
21 The chief priests of the Jews therefore said to Pilate, “Don’t write, ‘The King of the Jews,’ but, ‘he said, “I am King of the Jews.”’”
Alors les principaux sacrificateurs des Juifs dirent à Pilate: N'écris pas: Le roi des Juifs; mais écris que lui-même a dit: Je suis le roi des Juifs.
22 Pilate answered, “What I have written, I have written.”
Pilate répondit: Ce que j'ai écrit, je l'ai écrit.
23 Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took his garments and made four parts, to every soldier a part; and also the tunic. Now the tunic was without seam, woven from the top throughout.
Après que les soldats eurent crucifié Jésus, ils prirent ses vêtements, et ils en firent quatre parts, une pour chaque soldat. Ils prirent aussi sa robe, mais cette robe était sans couture, tout entière d'un seul tissu, depuis le haut jusqu'en bas.
24 Then they said to one another, “Let’s not tear it, but cast lots for it to decide whose it will be,” that the Scripture might be fulfilled, which says, “They parted my garments among them. They cast lots for my clothing.” Therefore the soldiers did these things.
Ils se dirent donc les uns aux autres: Ne la déchirons pas; mais tirons au sort à qui l'aura. C'était afin que cette parole de l'Écriture fût accomplie: «Ils ont partagé mes vêtements entre eux, et ils ont tiré ma robe au sort.» Voilà ce que firent les soldats.
25 But standing by Jesus’ cross were his mother, his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.
Auprès de la croix de Jésus se tenaient sa mère et la soeur de sa mère, Marie, femme de Cléopas, et Marie-Madeleine.
26 Therefore when Jesus saw his mother, and the disciple whom he loved standing there, he said to his mother, “Woman, behold, your son!”
Jésus, voyant sa mère et, près d'elle, le disciple qu'il aimait, dit à sa mère: Femme, voilà ton fils!
27 Then he said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother!” From that hour, the disciple took her to his own home.
Puis il dit au disciple: Voilà ta mère! A partir de ce moment, le disciple la prit chez lui.
28 After this, Jesus, seeing that all things were now finished, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, said, “I am thirsty!”
Après cela, sachant que déjà tout était accompli, Jésus dit, afin que fût pleinement accomplie l'Écriture: J'ai soif.
29 Now a vessel full of vinegar was set there; so they put a sponge full of the vinegar on hyssop, and held it at his mouth.
Il y avait là un vase plein de vinaigre. Les soldats emplirent donc de vinaigre une éponge, et, l'ayant fixée à une tige d'hysope, ils l'approchèrent de sa bouche.
30 When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, “It is finished!” Then he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.
Quand Jésus eut pris le vinaigre, il dit: Tout est accompli! Et, baissant la tête, il rendit l'esprit.
31 Therefore the Jews, because it was the Preparation Day, so that the bodies wouldn’t remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a special one), asked of Pilate that their legs might be broken and that they might be taken away.
Les Juifs, craignant que les corps ne restassent sur la croix pendant le sabbat — car c'était la préparation du sabbat, et ce sabbat était très solennel, — demandèrent à Pilate qu'on leur rompît les jambes et qu'on les enlevât.
32 Therefore the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first and of the other who was crucified with him;
Les soldats vinrent donc; ils rompirent les jambes au premier, et ensuite à l'autre qui était crucifié avec lui.
33 but when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they didn’t break his legs.
Quand ils vinrent à Jésus, voyant qu'il était déjà mort, ils ne lui rompirent pas les jambes;
34 However, one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and immediately blood and water came out.
mais l'un des soldats lui perça le côté avec une lance, et aussitôt il en sortit du sang et de l'eau.
35 He who has seen has testified, and his testimony is true. He knows that he tells the truth, that you may believe.
Celui qui a vu ce fait l'atteste — et son témoignage est véritable, et il sait qu'il est vrai, — afin que vous aussi, vous croyiez.
36 For these things happened that the Scripture might be fulfilled, “A bone of him will not be broken.”
Cela arriva, afin que cette parole de l'Écriture fût accomplie: «Aucun de ses os ne sera rompu.»
37 Again another Scripture says, “They will look on him whom they pierced.”
Et ailleurs, l'Écriture dit encore: «Ils regarderont à celui qu'ils ont percé.»
38 After these things, Joseph of Arimathaea, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, asked of Pilate that he might take away Jesus’ body. Pilate gave him permission. He came therefore and took away his body.
Après cela, Joseph d'Arimathée, qui était disciple de Jésus, mais en secret, parce qu'il craignait les juifs, demanda à Pilate la permission d'enlever le corps de Jésus; et Pilate le lui permit. Il vint donc et enleva le corps.
39 Nicodemus, who at first came to Jesus by night, also came bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred Roman pounds.
Nicodème, celui qui était venu la première fois trouver Jésus pendant la nuit, vint aussi, apportant environ cent livres d'une composition de myrrhe et d'aloès.
40 So they took Jesus’ body, and bound it in linen cloths with the spices, as the custom of the Jews is to bury.
Ils prirent donc le corps de Jésus et l'enveloppèrent de linges avec des aromates, comme c'est la coutume d'ensevelir chez les Juifs.
41 Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden. In the garden was a new tomb in which no man had ever yet been laid.
Or, à l'endroit où il avait été crucifié, il y avait un jardin, et dans ce jardin un tombeau neuf, où personne n'avait encore été mis.
42 Then, because of the Jews’ Preparation Day (for the tomb was near at hand), they laid Jesus there.
C'est là qu'ils déposèrent Jésus, parce que c'était la préparation des Juifs, et que ce tombeau était tout proche.
