Acts 28
1 When we had escaped, then they learned that the island was called Malta.
Après avoir été ainsi sauvés, nous apprîmes que l'île s'appelait Malte.
2 The natives showed us uncommon kindness; for they kindled a fire and received us all, because of the present rain and because of the cold.
Les indigènes nous témoignèrent une humanité peu commune; ils nous recueillirent tous auprès d'un grand feu qu'ils avaient allumé, parce que la pluie tombait et qu'il faisait froid.
3 But when Paul had gathered a bundle of sticks and laid them on the fire, a viper came out because of the heat and fastened on his hand.
Paul ayant ramassé une brassée de bois sec et l'ayant jetée dans le feu, une vipère en sortit à cause de la chaleur, et s'attacha à sa main.
4 When the natives saw the creature hanging from his hand, they said to one another, “No doubt this man is a murderer, whom, though he has escaped from the sea, yet Justice has not allowed to live.”
Quand les indigènes virent l'animal qui pendait à sa main, ils se dirent les uns aux autres: Certainement, cet homme est un meurtrier; car, après qu'il a été sauvé de la mer, la justice divine ne permet pas qu'il vive!
5 However he shook off the creature into the fire, and wasn’t harmed.
Mais Paul, ayant secoué la vipère dans le feu, ne ressentit aucun mal.
6 But they expected that he would have swollen or fallen down dead suddenly, but when they watched for a long time and saw nothing bad happen to him, they changed their minds and said that he was a god.
Les indigènes s'attendaient à le voir enfler ou tomber mort tout d'un coup; mais, après avoir longtemps attendu, voyant qu'il ne lui arrivait aucun mal, ils changèrent de sentiment et dirent que c'était un dieu.
7 Now in the neighborhood of that place were lands belonging to the chief man of the island, named Publius, who received us and courteously entertained us for three days.
Il y avait, dans cet endroit-là, des terres appartenant au premier personnage de l'île, nommé Publius; celui-ci nous reçut de la façon la plus hospitalière pendant trois jours.
8 The father of Publius lay sick of fever and dysentery. Paul entered in to him, prayed, and laying his hands on him, healed him.
Or, le père de ce Publius était au lit, malade de la fièvre et de la dysenterie. Paul alla le voir; et, ayant prié, il lui imposa les mains et le guérit.
9 Then when this was done, the rest also who had diseases in the island came and were cured.
Là-dessus, tous les autres habitants de l'île qui se trouvaient malades, vinrent à lui, et ils furent guéris.
10 They also honored us with many honors; and when we sailed, they put on board the things that we needed.
Aussi nous rendirent-ils de grands honneurs; et, à notre départ, ils nous fournirent ce qui nous était nécessaire.
11 After three months, we set sail in a ship of Alexandria which had wintered in the island, whose figurehead was “The Twin Brothers.”
Trois mois après, nous partîmes sur un navire d'Alexandrie, qui avait passé l'hiver dans l'île, et qui avait pour enseigne les Dioscures.
12 Touching at Syracuse, we stayed there three days.
Arrivés à Syracuse, nous y demeurâmes trois jours.
13 From there we circled around and arrived at Rhegium. After one day, a south wind sprang up, and on the second day we came to Puteoli,
De là, en suivant la côte, nous atteignîmes Rhégium. Le lendemain, le vent du Midi s'étant levé, nous vînmes en deux jours à Pouzzoles.
14 where we found brothers, and were entreated to stay with them for seven days. So we came to Rome.
Nous y trouvâmes des frères qui nous prièrent de demeurer avec eux sept jours; et ensuite nous allâmes à Rome.
15 From there the brothers, when they heard of us, came to meet us as far as The Market of Appius and The Three Taverns. When Paul saw them, he thanked God and took courage.
Les frères de cette ville, ayant entendu parler de nous, vinrent à notre rencontre jusqu'au Forum d'Appius et aux Trois-Tavernes. Paul, en les voyant, rendit grâces à Dieu et prit courage.
16 When we entered into Rome, the centurion delivered the prisoners to the captain of the guard, but Paul was allowed to stay by himself with the soldier who guarded him.
Quand nous fûmes arrivés à Rome, Paul eut la permission de demeurer à part, avec un soldat qui le gardait.
17 After three days Paul called together those who were the leaders of the Jews. When they had come together, he said to them, “I, brothers, though I had done nothing against the people or the customs of our fathers, still was delivered prisoner from Jerusalem into the hands of the Romans,
Trois jours après, il convoqua les principaux des Juifs. Quand ils furent réunis, il leur dit: Mes frères, quoique je n'eusse rien fait ni contre le peuple, ni contre les coutumes de nos pères, j'ai été arrêté à Jérusalem et livré entre les mains des Romains.
18 who, when they had examined me, desired to set me free, because there was no cause of death in me.
Ceux-ci, après avoir examiné ma cause, voulaient me relâcher, parce que je n'avais rien fait qui méritât la mort.
19 But when the Jews spoke against it, I was constrained to appeal to Caesar, not that I had anything about which to accuse my nation.
Mais les Juifs s'y étant opposés, j'ai été contraint d'en appeler à César, sans que j'aie dessein néanmoins d'accuser ma nation.
20 For this cause therefore I asked to see you and to speak with you. For because of the hope of Israel I am bound with this chain.”
C'est pour ce motif que j'ai demandé à vous voir et à vous parler; car c'est à cause de l'espérance d'Israël que je suis chargé de cette chaîne.
21 They said to him, “We neither received letters from Judea concerning you, nor did any of the brothers come here and report or speak any evil of you.
Ils lui répondirent: Nous n'avons pas reçu de lettres de Judée à ton sujet; et aucun des frères n'est venu faire un rapport ou dire du mal sur ton compte.
22 But we desire to hear from you what you think. For, as concerning this sect, it is known to us that everywhere it is spoken against.”
Cependant, nous voudrions bien apprendre de toi ce que tu penses; car, pour ce qui est de cette secte, nous savons qu'elle rencontre partout de l'opposition.
23 When they had appointed him a day, many people came to him at his lodging. He explained to them, testifying about God’s Kingdom, and persuading them concerning Jesus, both from the law of Moses and from the prophets, from morning until evening.
Ayant pris jour avec lui, ils vinrent en plus grand nombre le trouver dans son logis. Depuis le matin jusqu'au soir, il rendait son témoignage; il les entretenait du royaume de Dieu, et il s'efforçait de les persuader, par la loi de Moïse et par les prophètes, de ce qui concerne Jésus.
24 Some believed the things which were spoken, and some disbelieved.
Les uns furent persuadés de ce qu'il disait; les autres ne crurent point.
25 When they didn’t agree among themselves, they departed after Paul had spoken one message: “The Holy Spirit spoke rightly through Isaiah the prophet to our fathers,
Comme ils n'étaient pas d'accord entre eux et qu'ils se retiraient, Paul n'ajouta que ces mots: Elle était bien vraie la parole que l'Esprit saint fit entendre à nos pères, par le moyen d'Ésaïe, le prophète, quand il leur dit:
26 saying, ‘Go to this people and say, in hearing, you will hear, but will in no way understand. In seeing, you will see, but will in no way perceive.
«Va vers ce peuple, et dis-lui: Vous entendrez de vos oreilles, et vous ne comprendrez point; vous regarderez de vos yeux, et vous ne verrez point.
27 For this people’s heart has grown callous. Their ears are dull of hearing. Their eyes they have closed. Lest they should see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their heart, and would turn again, then I would heal them.’
Car le coeur de ce peuple s'est appesanti. Ils ont endurci leurs oreilles, et ils ont fermé leurs yeux de peur qu'ils ne voient de leurs yeux qu'ils n'entendent de leurs oreilles qu'ils ne comprennent de leur coeur qu'ils ne se convertissent, et que je ne les guérisse»
28 “Be it known therefore to you that the salvation of God is sent to the nations, and they will listen.”
Sachez donc que ce salut de Dieu a été envoyé aux Païens ceux-là l'écouteront.
29 When he had said these words, the Jews departed, having a great dispute among themselves.
[Lorsqu'il eut dit cela, les Juifs s'en allèrent, discutant vivement entre eux.]
30 Paul stayed two whole years in his own rented house and received all who were coming to him,
Paul demeura deux ans entiers dans un logement qu'il avait loué. Il recevait tous ceux qui venaient le voir,
31 preaching God’s Kingdom and teaching the things concerning the Lord Jesus Christ with all boldness, without hindrance.
prêchant le royaume de Dieu, et enseignant ce qui concerne le Seigneur Jésus-Christ, avec une entière liberté et sans aucun empêchement.
