Acts 22

1 “Brothers and fathers, listen to the defense which I now make to you.”

Ihr Männer, Brüder und Väter, hört die Verteidigung an, die ich jetzt an euch richte.

2 When they heard that he spoke to them in the Hebrew language, they were even more quiet. He said,

Da sie aber hörten, daß er sie auf Hebräisch anredete gaben sie um so mehr Ruhe. Und er sagte:

3 “I am indeed a Jew, born in Tarsus of Cilicia, but brought up in this city at the feet of Gamaliel, instructed according to the strict tradition of the law of our fathers, being zealous for God, even as you all are today.

ich bin ein Jude, geboren in Tarsus in Kilikia, auferzogen aber hier in der Stadt, und zu den Füßen Gamaliels geschult im väterlichen Gesetz nach aller Strenge, und war ein Eiferer für Gott so wie ihr alle es heute seid;

4 I persecuted this Way to the death, binding and delivering into prisons both men and women,

als solcher habe ich auch diese Lehre verfolgt bis auf den Tod, und Männer und Weiber gefesselt und ins Gefängnis gebracht,

5 as also the high priest and all the council of the elders testify, from whom also I received letters to the brothers, and traveled to Damascus to bring them also who were there to Jerusalem in bonds to be punished.

wie mir auch der Hohepriester und das ganze Presbyterium bezeugen kann, von welchen ich auch Briefe empfangen habe an die Brüder, und zog damit nach Damaskus, um auch die dort befindlichen gefesselt nach Jerusalem zur Strafe zu bringen.

6 “As I made my journey and came close to Damascus, about noon suddenly a great light shone around me from the sky.

Es geschah mir aber, da ich dahin zog und in die Nähe von Damaskus kam, daß mich um Mittag plötzlich ein starkes Licht vom Himmel her umstrahlte,

7 I fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to me, ‘Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?’

und ich stürzte zu Boden, und vernahm eine Stimme, die mir zurief: Saul, Saul, was verfolgst du mich?

8 I answered, ‘Who are you, Lord?’ He said to me, ‘I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom you persecute.’

Ich aber antwortete: wer bist du Herr? und er sprach zu mir: ich bin Jesus, der Nazoräer, den du verfolgst.

9 “Those who were with me indeed saw the light and were afraid, but they didn’t understand the voice of him who spoke to me.

Meine Begleiter aber schauten wohl das Licht, die Stimme dessen, der zu mir redete, aber vernahmen sie nicht.

10 I said, ‘What shall I do, Lord?’ The Lord said to me, ‘Arise, and go into Damascus. There you will be told about all things which are appointed for you to do.’

Ich aber sagte: was soll ich thun Herr? der Herr aber sprach zu mir: stehe auf und gehe nach Damaskus, dort wird dir alles gesagt werden, was dir zu thun verordnet ist.

11 When I couldn’t see for the glory of that light, being led by the hand of those who were with me, I came into Damascus.

Da ich aber von dem Glanze des Lichtes das Gesicht verlor, wurde ich von meinen Begleitern nach Damaskus an der Hand geführt.

12 “One Ananias, a devout man according to the law, well reported of by all the Jews who lived in Damascus,

Ein gewisser Ananias aber, ein Mann fromm nach dem Gesetz, mit gutem Zeugnis von allen dortigen Juden,

13 came to me, and standing by me said to me, ‘Brother Saul, receive your sight!’ In that very hour I looked up at him.

besuchte mich, stellte sich hin und sprach zu mir: Bruder Saul, werde sehend. Und zur Stunde sahe ich ihn.

14 He said, ‘The God of our fathers has appointed you to know his will, and to see the Righteous One, and to hear a voice from his mouth.

Er aber sprach: der Gott unserer Väter hat dich bestimmt seinen Willen zu erkennen, den Gerechten zu sehen, und ein Wort aus seinem Munde zu vernehmen,

15 For you will be a witness for him to all men of what you have seen and heard.

weil du für ihn Zeuge sein sollst bei allen Menschen, von dem was du gesehen und gehört hast.

16 Now why do you wait? Arise, be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on the name of the Lord.’

Und nun was zögerst du? stehe auf, laß dich taufen und eine Sünden abwaschen, indem du seinen Namen anrufst.

17 “When I had returned to Jerusalem and while I prayed in the temple, I fell into a trance

Da ich aber nach Jerusalem zurückgekehrt war, und im Tempel betete, geschah es mir, daß ich in Verzückung fiel,

18 and saw him saying to me, ‘Hurry and get out of Jerusalem quickly, because they will not receive testimony concerning me from you.’

und ihn sah, wie er zu mir sagte: eile und verlasse Jerusalem schleunig; denn sie werden dein Zeugnis über mich nicht annehmen.

19 I said, ‘Lord, they themselves know that I imprisoned and beat in every synagogue those who believed in you.

Und ich sprach: Herr, sie wissen doch selbst, daß ich es war, der die an dich Glaubenden gefangen nahm und mißhandelte in den Synagogen.

20 When the blood of Stephen, your witness, was shed, I also was standing by, consenting to his death, and guarding the cloaks of those who killed him.’

Und als das Blut Stephanus deines Zeugen vergossen wurde, stand ich ebenfalls dabei, hatte mein Gefallen daran und hütete die Kleider derer, die ihn töteten.

21 “He said to me, ‘Depart, for I will send you out far from here to the Gentiles.’”

Und er sprach zu mir: ziehe hin, ich will dich zu den Heiden in die Ferne senden.

22 They listened to him until he said that; then they lifted up their voice and said, “Rid the earth of this fellow, for he isn’t fit to live!”

Bis zu diesem Worte hörten sie ihm zu, da erhoben sie ein Geschrei: fort von der Erde mit dem, er darf nicht leben.

23 As they cried out, threw off their cloaks, and threw dust into the air,

Während sie aber schrien, ihre Kleider zerrissen und Staub in die Luft warfen,

24 the commanding officer commanded him to be brought into the barracks, ordering him to be examined by scourging, that he might know for what crime they shouted against him like that.

befahl der Oberst ihn in die Burg zu bringen, und ordnete an, daß man ihn mittelst Geißelung verhöre, um herauszubringen, aus welchem Grunde sie ihm so zuriefen.

25 When they had tied him up with thongs, Paul asked the centurion who stood by, “Is it lawful for you to scourge a man who is a Roman, and not found guilty?”

Da sie ihn aber nun für die Riemen ausgestreckt hatten, sprach Paulus zu dem Hauptmann, der dabei stand: dürft ihr einen Römer sogar ohne Urteil geißeln?

26 When the centurion heard it, he went to the commanding officer and told him, “Watch what you are about to do, for this man is a Roman!”

Als der Hauptmann das hörte, gieng er zum Obersten, meldete es und sagte: was willst du thun? der Mensch ist ja ein Römer.

27 The commanding officer came and asked him, “Tell me, are you a Roman?” He said, “Yes.”

Der Oberst aber gieng hin, und redete ihn an: sage mir, bist du ein Römer?

28 The commanding officer answered, “I bought my citizenship for a great price.” Paul said, “But I was born a Roman.”

er aber sprach: Gewiß. Der Oberst aber antwortete: ich habe dieses Bürgerrecht um ein großes Kapital erworben. Paulus aber sagte: ich bin sogar darin geboren.

29 Immediately those who were about to examine him departed from him, and the commanding officer also was afraid when he realized that he was a Roman, because he had bound him.

Sofort ließen sie ab von dem beabsichtigten Verhör, und der Oberst fürchtete sich, nachdem er erfahren, daß er ein Römer sei, und ließ ihn sofort losbinden.

30 But on the next day, desiring to know the truth about why he was accused by the Jews, he freed him from the bonds and commanded the chief priests and all the council to come together, and brought Paul down and set him before them.

Tags darauf, in der Absicht, über den Anklagegrund der Juden ins klare zu kommen, hieß er ihn losbinden, befahl eine Sitzung der Hohenpriester und des ganzen Synedriums, und ließ den Paulus herunterbringen und vor sie stellen.
