Acts 22
1 “Brothers and fathers, listen to the defense which I now make to you.”
" Mes frères et mes pères, écoutez ce que j'ai maintenant à vous dire pour ma défense. " —
2 When they heard that he spoke to them in the Hebrew language, they were even more quiet. He said,
Dès qu'ils entendirent qu'il leur parlait en langue hébraïque, ils firent encore plus de silence.
3 “I am indeed a Jew, born in Tarsus of Cilicia, but brought up in this city at the feet of Gamaliel, instructed according to the strict tradition of the law of our fathers, being zealous for God, even as you all are today.
Et Paul dit: " Je suis Juif, né à Tarse en Cilicie; mais j'ai été élevé dans cette ville et instruit aux pieds de Gamaliel dans la connaissance exacte de la Loi de nos pères, étant plein de zèle pour Dieu, comme vous l'êtes tous aujourd'hui.
4 I persecuted this Way to the death, binding and delivering into prisons both men and women,
C'est moi qui ai persécuté cette secte jusqu'à la mort, chargeant de chaînes et jetant en prison hommes et femmes:
5 as also the high priest and all the council of the elders testify, from whom also I received letters to the brothers, and traveled to Damascus to bring them also who were there to Jerusalem in bonds to be punished.
le grand-prêtre et tous les Anciens m'en sont témoins. Ayant même reçu d'eux des lettres pour les frères, je partis pour Damas afin d'amener enchaînés à Jérusalem ceux qui se trouvaient là, et de les faire punir.
6 “As I made my journey and came close to Damascus, about noon suddenly a great light shone around me from the sky.
Mais comme j'étais en chemin, et déjà près de Damas, tout à coup, vers midi, une vive lumière venant du ciel resplendit autour de moi.
7 I fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to me, ‘Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?’
Je tombai par terre, et j'entendis une voix qui me disait: Saul, Saul, pourquoi me persécutes-tu?
8 I answered, ‘Who are you, Lord?’ He said to me, ‘I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom you persecute.’
Je répondis: Qui êtes-vous, Seigneur? Et il me dit: Je suis Jésus de Nazareth, que tu persécutes.
9 “Those who were with me indeed saw the light and were afraid, but they didn’t understand the voice of him who spoke to me.
Ceux qui étaient avec moi virent bien la lumière, mais ils n'entendirent pas la voix de celui qui me parlait.
10 I said, ‘What shall I do, Lord?’ The Lord said to me, ‘Arise, and go into Damascus. There you will be told about all things which are appointed for you to do.’
Alors je dis: Que dois-je faire, Seigneur? Et le Seigneur me répondit: Lève-toi, va à Damas, et là on te dira tout ce que tu dois faire.
11 When I couldn’t see for the glory of that light, being led by the hand of those who were with me, I came into Damascus.
Et comme par suite de l'éclat de cette lumière je ne voyais plus, ceux qui étaient avec moi me prirent par la main, et j'arrivai à Damas.
12 “One Ananias, a devout man according to the law, well reported of by all the Jews who lived in Damascus,
Or un homme pieux selon la Loi, nommé Ananie, et de qui tous les Juifs de la ville rendaient un bon témoignage,
13 came to me, and standing by me said to me, ‘Brother Saul, receive your sight!’ In that very hour I looked up at him.
vint me voir, et s'étant approché de moi, me dit: Saul, mon frère, recouvre la vue. Et au même instant je le vis.
14 He said, ‘The God of our fathers has appointed you to know his will, and to see the Righteous One, and to hear a voice from his mouth.
Il dit alors: Le Dieu de nos pères t'a prédestiné à connaître sa volonté, à voir le Juste et entendre les paroles de sa bouche.
15 For you will be a witness for him to all men of what you have seen and heard.
Car tu lui serviras de témoin, devant tous les hommes, des choses que tu as vues et entendues.
16 Now why do you wait? Arise, be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on the name of the Lord.’
Et maintenant que tardes-tu? Lève-toi, reçois le baptême et purifie-toi de tes péchés, en invoquant son nom. —
17 “When I had returned to Jerusalem and while I prayed in the temple, I fell into a trance
De retour à Jérusalem, comme je priais dans le temple, il m'arriva d'être ravi en esprit,
18 and saw him saying to me, ‘Hurry and get out of Jerusalem quickly, because they will not receive testimony concerning me from you.’
et je vis le Seigneur qui me disait: Hâte-toi et sors au plus tôt de Jérusalem, parce qu'on n'y recevra pas le témoignage que tu rendras de moi. —
19 I said, ‘Lord, they themselves know that I imprisoned and beat in every synagogue those who believed in you.
Seigneur, répondis-je, ils savent eux-mêmes que je faisais mettre en prison et battre de verges dans les synagogues ceux qui croyaient en vous,
20 When the blood of Stephen, your witness, was shed, I also was standing by, consenting to his death, and guarding the cloaks of those who killed him.’
et lorsqu'on répandit le sang d'Etienne, votre témoin, j'étais moi-même présent, joignant mon approbation à celle des autres et gardant les vêtements de ceux qui le lapidaient.
21 “He said to me, ‘Depart, for I will send you out far from here to the Gentiles.’”
Alors il me dit: Va, c'est aux nations lointaines que je veux t'envoyer. "
22 They listened to him until he said that; then they lifted up their voice and said, “Rid the earth of this fellow, for he isn’t fit to live!”
Les Juifs l'avaient écouté jusqu'à ces mots; ils élevèrent alors la voix, en disant: " Ote de la terre un pareil homme; il n'est pas digne de vivre. "
23 As they cried out, threw off their cloaks, and threw dust into the air,
Et comme ils poussaient de grands cris, jetant leurs manteaux et lançant de la poussière en l'air,
24 the commanding officer commanded him to be brought into the barracks, ordering him to be examined by scourging, that he might know for what crime they shouted against him like that.
le tribun ordonna de faire entrer Paul dans la forteresse et de lui donner la question par le fouet, afin de savoir pour quel motif ils criaient ainsi contre lui.
25 When they had tied him up with thongs, Paul asked the centurion who stood by, “Is it lawful for you to scourge a man who is a Roman, and not found guilty?”
Déjà les soldats l'avaient lié avec les courroies, lorsque Paul dit au centurion qui était là: " Vous est-il permis de flageller un citoyen romain, qui n'est pas même condamné? "
26 When the centurion heard it, he went to the commanding officer and told him, “Watch what you are about to do, for this man is a Roman!”
A ces mots, le centurion alla trouver le tribun pour l'avertir, et lui dit: " Que vas-tu faire? Cet homme est citoyen romain. "
27 The commanding officer came and asked him, “Tell me, are you a Roman?” He said, “Yes.”
Le tribun vint et dit à Paul: " Dis-moi, es-tu citoyen romain? " " Oui, " répondit-il;
28 The commanding officer answered, “I bought my citizenship for a great price.” Paul said, “But I was born a Roman.”
et le tribun repris: " Moi, j'ai acheté bien cher ce droit de cité. " — " Et moi, dit Paul, je l'ai par ma naissance. "
29 Immediately those who were about to examine him departed from him, and the commanding officer also was afraid when he realized that he was a Roman, because he had bound him.
Aussitôt ceux qui se disposaient à lui donner la question se retirèrent; et le tribun aussi eut peur, quand il sut que Paul était citoyen romain et qu'il l'avait fait lier.
30 But on the next day, desiring to know the truth about why he was accused by the Jews, he freed him from the bonds and commanded the chief priests and all the council to come together, and brought Paul down and set him before them.
Le lendemain, voulant savoir exactement de quoi les Juifs l'accusaient, il lui fit ôter ses liens, et donna l'ordre aux princes des prêtres et à tout le Sanhédrin de se réunir; puis, ayant fait descendre Paul, il le plaça au milieu d'eux.
