Acts 16
1 He came to Derbe and Lystra; and behold, a certain disciple was there, named Timothy, the son of a Jewess who believed, but his father was a Greek.
Paul arriva à Derbe, puis à Lystre. Et voilà qu’il s’y trouvait un disciple du nom de Timothée, fils d’une femme juive fidèle et d’un père gentil.
2 The brothers who were at Lystra and Iconium gave a good testimony about him.
Les frères, qui étaient à Lystre et à Icone, rendaient de lui un bon témoignage.
3 Paul wanted to have him go out with him, and he took and circumcised him because of the Jews who were in those parts, for they all knew that his father was a Greek.
Paul voulut l’emmener avec lui; il le prit donc et le circoncit à cause des Juifs qui étaient en ces lieux. Car tous savaient que son père était gentil.
4 As they went on their way through the cities, they delivered the decrees to them to keep which had been ordained by the apostles and elders who were at Jerusalem.
Or, en allant par les villes, ils leur recommandaient d’observer les décisions qui avaient été prises par les apôtres et les anciens qui étaient à Jérusalem.
5 So the assemblies were strengthened in the faith, and increased in number daily.
Ainsi les Eglises s’affermissaient dans la foi et croissaient en nombre tous les jours.
6 When they had gone through the region of Phrygia and Galatia, they were forbidden by the Holy Spirit to speak the word in Asia.
Mais, comme ils traversaient la Phrygie et le pays de Galatie, il leur fut défendu par l’Esprit-Saint d’annoncer la parole de Dieu dans l’Asie.
7 When they had come opposite Mysia, they tried to go into Bithynia, but the Spirit didn’t allow them.
Etant venus en Mysie, ils tentèrent d’aller en Bithynie; mais l’Esprit de Jésus, ne le leur permit pas.
8 Passing by Mysia, they came down to Troas.
Lorsqu’ils eurent traversé la Mysie, ils descendirent à Troas;
9 A vision appeared to Paul in the night. There was a man of Macedonia standing, begging him and saying, “Come over into Macedonia and help us.”
Et Paul eut, la nuit, une vision: Un certain homme de Macédoine se tenait devant lui, le priant et disant: Passe en Macédoine, et secours-nous.
10 When he had seen the vision, immediately we sought to go out to Macedonia, concluding that the Lord had called us to preach the Good News to them.
Aussitôt qu’il eut en cette vision, nous cherchâmes à partir pour la Macédoine, assurés que Dieu nous appelait à y prêcher l’Evangile.
11 Setting sail therefore from Troas, we made a straight course to Samothrace, and the day following to Neapolis;
Nous étant donc embarqués à Troas, nous vînmes droit à Samothrace, et le jour suivant à Néapolis,
12 and from there to Philippi, which is a city of Macedonia, the foremost of the district, a Roman colony. We were staying some days in this city.
Et de là à Philippes, colonie qui est la première ville de cette partie de la Macédoine. Or nous demeurâmes quelques jours à conférer dans cette ville.
13 On the Sabbath day we went outside of the city by a riverside, where we supposed there was a place of prayer, and we sat down and spoke to the women who had come together.
Le jour du sabbat, nous sortîmes hors de la porte près du fleuve, où il paraissait que se faisait la prière; et, nous asseyant, nous parlâmes aux femmes qui s’étaient assemblées.
14 A certain woman named Lydia, a seller of purple, of the city of Thyatira, one who worshiped God, heard us. The Lord opened her heart to listen to the things which were spoken by Paul.
Et une femme, nommée Lydie, marchande de pourpre de la ville de Thyatire, et servant Dieu, nous écouta; et le Seigneur ouvrit son cœur pour prêter attention à ce que disait Paul.
15 When she and her household were baptized, she begged us, saying, “If you have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come into my house and stay.” So she persuaded us.
Lorsqu’elle eut été baptisée, elle et sa maison, elle nous pria, disant: Si vous m’avez jugée fidèle au Seigneur, entrez dans ma maison, et demeurez-y. Et elle nous y força.
16 As we were going to prayer, a certain girl having a spirit of divination met us, who brought her masters much gain by fortune telling.
Or il arriva qu’allant à la prière, nous rencontrâmes une jeune fille ayant un esprit de python, laquelle apportait un grand gain à ses maîtres, en devinant.
17 Following Paul and us, she cried out, “These men are servants of the Most High God, who proclaim to us a way of salvation!”
Cette jeune fille nous suivant, Paul et nous, criait, disant: Ces hommes sont des serviteurs du Dieu Très-Haut, qui vous annoncent la voie du salut.
18 She was doing this for many days. But Paul, becoming greatly annoyed, turned and said to the spirit, “I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her!” It came out that very hour.
Elle fit cela pendant bien des jours. Cependant Paul, le souffrant avec peine, et se retournant, dit à l’esprit: Je te commande, au nom de Jésus-Christ, de sortir d’elle. Et il sortit à l’heure même.
19 But when her masters saw that the hope of their gain was gone, they seized Paul and Silas and dragged them into the marketplace before the rulers.
Mais ses maîtres, voyant que l’espoir de leur gain était perdu, se saisirent de Paul et de Silas, et les conduisirent sur la place publique devant les autorités;
20 When they had brought them to the magistrates, they said, “These men, being Jews, are agitating our city
Et les présentant aux magistrats, ils dirent: Ces hommes troublent notre ville, attendu que ce sont des Juifs,
21 and advocate customs which it is not lawful for us to accept or to observe, being Romans.”
Qui enseignent des pratiques qu’il ne nous est pas permis de recevoir ni de suivre, puisque nous sommes Romains.
22 The multitude rose up together against them and the magistrates tore their clothes from them, then commanded them to be beaten with rods.
Et le peuple courut sur eux; et les magistrats, leurs vêtements déchirés, ordonnèrent qu’ils fussent déchirés de verges.
23 When they had laid many stripes on them, they threw them into prison, charging the jailer to keep them safely.
Et, quand on les eut chargés d’un grand nombre de coups, ils les envoyèrent en prison, ordonnant au geôlier de les garder soigneusement.
24 Having received such a command, he threw them into the inner prison and secured their feet in the stocks.
Le geôlier, ayant reçu cet ordre, les mit dans la prison basse, et serra leurs pieds dans les ceps.
25 But about midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them.
Or, au milieu de la nuit, Paul et Silas priant, louaient Dieu; et ceux qui étaient dans la prison, les entendaient.
26 Suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken; and immediately all the doors were opened, and everyone’s bonds were loosened.
Tout-à-coup il se fit un grand tremblement de terre, de sorte que les fondements de la prison furent ébranlés. Et aussitôt toutes les portes s’ouvrirent, et les liens de tous les prisonniers furent brisés.
27 The jailer, being roused out of sleep and seeing the prison doors open, drew his sword and was about to kill himself, supposing that the prisoners had escaped.
Alors, réveillé et voyant les portes de la prison ouvertes, le geôlier tira son épée, et il voulait se tuer, pensant que les prisonniers s’étaient enfuis.
28 But Paul cried with a loud voice, saying, “Don’t harm yourself, for we are all here!”
Mais Paul cria d’une voix forte, disant: Ne te fais pas de mal, car nous sommes tous ici.
29 He called for lights, sprang in, fell down trembling before Paul and Silas,
Et le geôlier, ayant demandé de la lumière, entra; et, tout tremblant, il tomba aux pieds de Paul et de Silas;
30 brought them out, and said, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?”
Et les faisant sortir, il demanda: Seigneurs, que faut-il que je fasse pour être sauvé?
31 They said, “Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved, you and your household.”
Ils lui répondirent: Crois au Seigneur Jésus, et tu seras sauvé, toi et ta maison.
32 They spoke the word of the Lord to him, and to all who were in his house.
Et ils lui annoncèrent la parole du Seigneur, à lui et à tous ceux qui étaient dans sa maison.
33 He took them the same hour of the night and washed their stripes, and was immediately baptized, he and all his household.
Et lui, les prenant à cette même heure de la nuit, il lava leurs plaies, et il fut baptisé, lui et toute sa maison, aussitôt après.
34 He brought them up into his house and set food before them, and rejoiced greatly with all his household, having believed in God.
Puis, les ayant conduits chez lui, il leur servit à manger; et il se réjouit avec toute sa maison de ce qu’il avait cru en Dieu.
35 But when it was day, the magistrates sent the sergeants, saying, “Let those men go.”
Lorsqu’il fit jour, les magistrats envoyèrent les licteurs, disant: Laisse aller ces hommes.
36 The jailer reported these words to Paul, saying, “The magistrates have sent to let you go; now therefore come out and go in peace.”
Aussitôt le geôlier rapporta ces paroles à Paul: Les magistrats ont mandé de vous relâcher; maintenant donc, sortez et allez en paix.
37 But Paul said to them, “They have beaten us publicly without a trial, men who are Romans, and have cast us into prison! Do they now release us secretly? No, most certainly, but let them come themselves and bring us out!”
Mais Paul dit aux licteurs: Après nous avoir publiquement déchirés de verges, sans jugement, nous, citoyens romains, ils nous ont mis en prison, et maintenant ils nous renvoient en secret? Il n’en sera pas ainsi, mais qu’ils viennent,
38 The sergeants reported these words to the magistrates, and they were afraid when they heard that they were Romans,
Et nous délivrent eux-mêmes. Les licteurs rapportèrent donc ces paroles aux magistrats. Or ceux-ci furent saisis de crainte, ayant appris qu’ils étaient Romains.
39 and they came and begged them. When they had brought them out, they asked them to depart from the city.
Ils vinrent donc les supplier; et les faisant sortir, ils les prièrent de se retirer de la ville.
40 They went out of the prison and entered into Lydia’s house. When they had seen the brothers, they encouraged them, then departed.
Or, sortant de la prison, ils allèrent chez Lydie; et ayant vu les frères, ils les consolèrent et partirent.
