1 Samuel 4

1 The word of Samuel came to all Israel. Now Israel went out against the Philistines to battle, and encamped beside Ebenezer; and the Philistines encamped in Aphek.

Et les Israélites sortirent à la rencontre des Philistins pour livrer bataille, et ils campèrent près d'Ebenézer; et les Philistins campèrent à Aphek.

2 The Philistines put themselves in array against Israel. When they joined battle, Israel was defeated by the Philistines, who killed about four thousand men of the army in the field.

Et les Philistins formèrent leurs lignes vis-à-vis des Israélites, et le combat s'engagea, et les Israélites furent défaits par les Philistins qui, en bataille rangée, leur tuèrent dans la plaine environ quatre mille hommes.

3 When the people had come into the camp, the elders of Israel said, “Why has Yahweh defeated us today before the Philistines? Let’s get the ark of Yahweh’s covenant out of Shiloh and bring it to us, that it may come among us and save us out of the hand of our enemies.”

Et le peuple étant rentré dans le camp, les Anciens d'Israël dirent: Pourquoi l'Éternel nous a-t-Il aujourd'hui laissé recevoir ce coup des Philistins? Allons nous chercher à Silo l'Arche de l'alliance de l'Éternel, afin qu'amenée au milieu de nous elle nous sauve des mains de nos ennemis!

4 So the people sent to Shiloh, and they brought from there the ark of the covenant of Yahweh of Armies, who sits above the cherubim; and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were there with the ark of the covenant of God.

Le peuple députa donc à Silo, et l'on en ramena l'Arche d'alliance de l'Éternel des armées trônant sur les Chérubins; or les deux fils d'Elie, Hophni et Phinées étaient là accompagnant l'Arche d'alliance de Dieu.

5 When the ark of Yahweh’s covenant came into the camp, all Israel shouted with a great shout, so that the earth resounded.

Et à l'arrivée de l'Arche d'alliance de l'Éternel dans le camp, tous les Israélites applaudirent à grands cris à ébranler la terre.

6 When the Philistines heard the noise of the shout, they said, “What does the noise of this great shout in the camp of the Hebrews mean?” They understood that Yahweh’s ark had come into the camp.

Et les Philistins entendant retentir ces acclamations dirent: Qu'est-ce que ces grandes acclamations qui retentissent dans le camp des Hébreux? Et ayant eu connaissance de l'arrivée de l'Arche de l'Éternel dans le camp,

7 The Philistines were afraid, for they said, “God has come into the camp.” They said, “Woe to us! For there has not been such a thing before.

les Philistins eurent peur, car ils dirent: Dieu est venu au camp! et ils ajoutèrent: Malheur à nous! car ni hier ni avant-hier les choses n'ont été telles,

8 Woe to us! Who shall deliver us out of the hand of these mighty gods? These are the gods that struck the Egyptians with all kinds of plagues in the wilderness.

malheur à nous! qui nous arrachera des mains de ce Dieu très puissant? C'est ce Dieu qui frappa les Egyptiens de tous les fléaux dans le désert.

9 Be strong and behave like men, O you Philistines, that you not be servants to the Hebrews, as they have been to you. Strengthen yourselves like men, and fight!”

Ramassez vos forces et soyez hommes, Philistins, pour ne pas être asservis aux Hébreux comme ils vous ont été asservis! soyez donc hommes et combattez!

10 The Philistines fought, and Israel was defeated, and each man fled to his tent. There was a very great slaughter; for thirty thousand footmen of Israel fell.

Et les Philistins livrèrent le combat, et les Israélites furent défaits et s'enfuirent chacun dans leurs tentes, et la déroute fut fort grande, et Israël perdit trente mille fantassins.

11 God’s ark was taken; and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were slain.

Et l'Arche de Dieu fut prise et les deux fils d'Eli, Hophni et Phinées périrent.

12 A man of Benjamin ran out of the army and came to Shiloh the same day, with his clothes torn and with dirt on his head.

Alors un homme de Benjamin partit à la course du champ de bataille et parvint à Silo le jour même, les habits déchirés, et la tête couverte de poussière.

13 When he came, behold, Eli was sitting on his seat by the road watching, for his heart trembled for God’s ark. When the man came into the city and told about it, all the city cried out.

Et lorsqu'il arriva, voilà que Eli était assis sur son siège, regardant du côté de la route, car son cœur était inquiet de l'Arche de Dieu, et lorsque l'homme vint apporter la nouvelle dans la ville, toute la ville poussa des cris.

14 When Eli heard the noise of the crying, he said, “What does the noise of this tumult mean?” The man hurried, and came and told Eli.

Et à l'ouïe de ces cris Eli dit: Que signifie celte rumeur! Et aussitôt l'homme vint informer Eli.

15 Now Eli was ninety-eight years old. His eyes were set, so that he could not see.

Or Eli était âgé de quatre-vingt-dix-huit ans, et il avait l'œil fixe et ne pouvait voir.

16 The man said to Eli, “I am he who came out of the army, and I fled today out of the army.” He said, “How did the matter go, my son?”

Et l'homme dit à Eli: J'arrive du champ de bataille aujourd'hui. Et Eli dit: Qu'a été l'affaire mon fils?

17 He who brought the news answered, “Israel has fled before the Philistines, and there has been also a great slaughter among the people. Your two sons also, Hophni and Phinehas, are dead, and God’s ark has been captured.”

Et le courrier répondit et dit: Israël a fui devant les Philistins, et de plus la déroute a été grande dans le peuple, et sont aussi morts tes deux fils Hophni et Phinées, et l'Arche de Dieu est prise.

18 When he made mention of God’s ark, Eli fell from off his seat backward by the side of the gate; and his neck broke, and he died, for he was an old man and heavy. He had judged Israel forty years.

Et quand il fit mention de l'Arche de Dieu, Eli tomba de son siège à la renverse vers le côté de la porte et se rompit la nuque et mourut, car l'homme était vieux et appesanti. Or il avait été quarante ans Juge d'Israël.

19 His daughter-in-law, Phinehas’ wife, was with child, near to giving birth. When she heard the news that God’s ark was taken and that her father-in-law and her husband were dead, she bowed herself and gave birth; for her pains came on her.

Et sa bru, femme de Phinées, était enceinte, près de son terme. Et en apprenant la nouvelle de la prise de l'Arche de Dieu, et de la mort de son beau-frère et de son mari, elle se baissa et accoucha, car les maux la surprirent.

20 About the time of her death the women who stood by her said to her, “Don’t be afraid, for you have given birth to a son.” But she didn’t answer, neither did she regard it.

Et comme elle se mourait, et que celles qui l'assistaient dirent: Ne crains point, car tu as enfanté un fils! elle ne répondit point, et ne prit pas garde.

21 She named the child Ichabod, saying, “The glory has departed from Israel!” because God’s ark was taken, and because of her father-in-law and her husband.

Et elle nomma l'enfant Icabod (sans gloire), et elle dit: « La gloire a émigré d'Israël! » à cause de la prise de l'Arche et en vue de son beau-frère et de son mari;

22 She said, “The glory has departed from Israel; for God’s ark has been taken.”

c'est pourquoi elle dit: « La gloire a émigré d'Israël, car l'Arche de Dieu est prise. »
