Galatians 2

1 Then fourteen years after I went again to Jerusalem with Barnabas, and took Titus with [me] also.

Quatorze ans après, je montai de nouveau à Jérusalem avec Barnabas, et je pris aussi Tite avec moi.

2 And I went by revelation, and communicated to them that gospel which I preach among the Gentiles, but privately to them who were of reputation, lest by any means I should run, or had run in vain.

J'y montai par suite d'une révélation, et j'exposai aux frères l'Évangile que je prêche parmi les Païens; je l'exposai en particulier à ceux qui sont les plus considérés, de peur de courir ou d'avoir couru en vain.

3 But neither Titus, who was with me, being a Greek, was compelled to be circumcised:

Mais Tite, qui m'accompagnait et qui était Grec, ne fut pas même contraint de se faire circoncire.

4 And that because of false brethren unawares brought in, who came in privately to spy out our liberty which we have in Christ Jesus, that they might bring us into bondage:

Or, nous agîmes ainsi à cause des faux frères, qui s'étaient introduits furtivement parmi nous pour épier la liberté que nous avons en Jésus-Christ, afin de nous réduire en servitude.

5 To whom we gave place by subjection, no, not for an hour; that the truth of the gospel might continue with you.

Nous ne leur cédâmes pas un instant, refusant de nous placer sous leur dépendance, afin que la vérité de l'Évangile fût maintenue parmi vous.

6 But of these, who seemed to be somewhat, (whatever they were, it maketh no matter to me: God accepteth no man's person: ) for they who seemed [to be somewhat], in conference added nothing to me:

Quant à ceux qu'on tient en si haute estime — ce qu'ils ont pu être jadis m'importe peu: Dieu ne fait pas acception de personnes! — ces hommes, si estimés, ne m'imposèrent rien de plus.

7 But on the contrary, when they saw that the gospel of the uncircumcision was committed to me, as [the gospel] of the circumcision [was] to Peter;

Au contraire, voyant que la mission de prêcher l'Évangile aux incirconcis m'avait été confiée, comme à Pierre celle de le prêcher aux circoncis

8 (For he that wrought effectually in Peter to the apostleship of the circumcision, the same was mighty in me towards the Gentiles: )

— car Celui qui a agi en Pierre pour le faire apôtre des Circoncis, a également agi en moi pour me faire apôtre des Païens —

9 And when James, Cephas, and John, who seemed to be pillars, perceived the grace that was given to me, they gave to me and Barnabas the right hands of fellowship; that we [should go] to the heathen, and they to the circumcision.

et reconnaissant la grâce qui m'avait été accordée, Jacques, Céphas et Jean, qui sont considérés comme des colonnes, nous donnèrent, à Barnabas et à moi, la main d'association, afin que nous allions vers les Païens, et eux vers les Circoncis.

10 Only [they would] that we should remember the poor; the same which I also was forward to do.

Ils nous recommandèrent seulement de nous souvenir des pauvres, ce qu'aussi j'ai eu soin de faire.

11 But when Peter had come to Antioch, I withstood him to the face, because he was to be blamed.

Mais, lorsque Céphas vint à Antioche, je lui résistai en face, parce qu'il méritait d'être repris.

12 For before that certain came from James, he used to eat with the Gentiles: but when they had come, he withdrew, and separated himself, fearing them who were of the circumcision.

Car, avant l'arrivée de quelques personnes venues d'auprès de Jacques, il mangeait avec les Païens; et dès qu'elles furent arrivées, il se retira et se tint à l'écart, craignant ceux de la circoncision.

13 And the other Jews dissembled likewise with him; so that Barnabas also was carried away with their dissimulation.

Les autres Juifs usèrent de la même dissimulation, de sorte que Barnabas lui-même fut entraîné par leur hypocrisie.

14 But when I saw that they walked not uprightly according to the truth of the gospel, I said to Peter before [them] all, If thou, being a Jew, livest after the manner of Gentiles, and not as do the Jews, why compellest thou the Gentiles to live as do the Jews?

Alors, voyant qu'ils ne marchaient pas droit selon la vérité de l'Évangile, je dis à Céphas en présence de tous: Si toi qui es Juif, tu vis à la façon des Païens, et non comme les Juifs, pourquoi obliges-tu les Païens à judaïser?

15 We [who are] Jews by nature, and not sinners of the Gentiles,

Pour nous, nous sommes des Juifs de naissance, et non des pécheurs d'origine païenne.

16 Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we may be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified.

Néanmoins, ayant connu que ce n'est point par les oeuvres de la loi, mais par la foi en Jésus-Christ, que l'homme est justifié, nous avons nous-mêmes cru en Jésus-Christ, afin d'être justifiés par la foi en Christ, et non par les oeuvres de la loi; car personne ne sera justifié par les oeuvres de la loi.

17 But if, while we seek to be justified by Christ, we ourselves also are found sinners, [is] therefore Christ the minister of sin? By no means.

Mais si, en cherchant à être justifiés par Christ, nous étions nous-mêmes trouvés pécheurs, Christ serait donc ministre du péché! Non, certes!

18 For if I build again the things which I destroyed, I make myself a transgressor.

En effet, si je rebâtissais ce que j'ai détruit, je me constituerais moi-même transgresseur.

19 For I through the law am dead to the law, that I may live to God.

Or, par la loi je suis mort à la loi, afin de vivre pour Dieu.

20 I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless, I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh, I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.

J'ai été crucifié avec Christ: si je vis, ce n'est plus moi qui vis, c'est Christ qui vit en moi; et si je vis encore dans la chair, je vis dans la foi au Fils de Dieu qui m'a aimé, et qui s'est livré lui-même pour moi.

21 I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness is [attainable] by the law, then Christ hath died in vain.

Je ne veux pas anéantir la grâce de Dieu; car, si la justice s'obtient par la loi, Christ est donc mort en vain!
