Proverbs 24
1 Be not thou envious against evil men, neither desire to be with them.
Ne porte pas envie aux hommes méchants, et ne désire pas d'être avec eux.
2 For their heart studieth destruction, and their lips talk of mischief.
Car leur cœur médite la violence, et leurs lèvres ne profèrent que le malheur.
3 Through wisdom is an house built; and by understanding it is established:
C'est par la sagesse qu'une maison s'élève, et par l'intelligence qu'elle s'affermit.
4 And by knowledge shall the chambers be filled with all precious and pleasant riches.
C'est par la science que l'intérieur se remplit, de tous les biens précieux et agréables.
5 A wise man is strong; and a man of knowledge increaseth strength.
Un homme sage est plein de force, et celui qui a de la science montre une grande puissance.
6 For by wise counsel thou shalt make thy war: and in multitude of counsellors there is safety.
Car avec la prudence tu conduiras la guerre, et le salut est dans le grand nombre des conseillers.
7 Wisdom is too high for a fool: he openeth not his mouth in the gate.
La sagesse est trop haute pour l'insensé; il n'ouvre pas la bouche à la porte de la ville.
8 He that deviseth to do evil shall be called a mischievous person.
Celui qui pense à faire le mal s'appelle un artisan d'intrigues.
9 The thought of foolishness is sin: and the scorner is an abomination to men.
Le dessein de l'insensé, c'est le péché, et le railleur est en abomination parmi les hommes.
10 If thou faintest in the day of adversity, thy strength is small.
Si tu te montres faible au jour de la détresse, ta force n'est que faiblesse.
11 If thou refraineth to deliver them that are drawn to death, and those that are ready to be slain;
Délivre ceux qu'on traîne à la mort; ceux qui vont en chancelant au massacre, sauve-les!
12 If thou sayest, Behold, we knew it not; doth not he that weigheth the heart consider it? and he that keepeth thy soul, doth not he know it? and shall not he render to every man according to his works?
Si tu dis: « Mais! Nous ne le savions pas! » Celui qui pèse les cœurs ne le voit-il pas? Celui qui veille sur ton âme ne le connaît-il pas, et ne rendra-t-il pas à chacun selon ses œuvres?
13 My son, eat thou honey, because it is good; and the honeycomb, which is sweet to thy taste:
Mon fils, mange du miel, car il est bon; un rayon de miel est doux à ton palais.
14 So shall the knowledge of wisdom be to thy soul: when thou hast found it, then there shall be a reward, and thy expectation shall not be cut off.
Sache que la sagesse est la même chose pour ton âme; si tu l'acquiers, il est un avenir, et ton espérance ne sera pas frustrée.
15 Lay not wait, O wicked man, against the dwelling of the righteous; destroy not his resting place:
Ne tends pas, ô méchant, des embûches à la demeure du juste, et ne dévaste pas le lieu où il repose;
16 For a just man falleth seven times, and riseth again: but the wicked shall fall into mischief.
car sept fois le juste tombe, et il se relève, mais les méchants sont précipités dans le malheur.
17 Rejoice not when thy enemy falleth, and let not thy heart be glad when he stumbleth:
Si ton ennemi tombe, ne te réjouis pas, et que ton cœur ne se réjouisse pas de sa ruine,
18 Lest the LORD see it, and it displease him, and he turn away his wrath from him.
de peur que Yahweh ne le voie, que cela soit mauvais à ses yeux, et qu'il ne détourne de lui sa colère.
19 Fret not thyself because of evil men, neither be thou envious at the wicked;
Ne t'irrite pas à cause des méchants, ne porte pas envie aux pervers,
20 For there shall be no reward to the evil man; the lamp of the wicked shall be put out.
car il n'y a point d'avenir pour celui qui fait le mal, et la lampe des méchants s'éteindra.
21 My son, fear thou the LORD and the king: and meddle not with them that are given to change:
Mon fils, crains Yahweh et le roi; ne te mêle pas avec les hommes remuants;
22 For their calamity shall rise suddenly; and who knoweth the ruin of them both?
car soudain surgira leur malheur, et qui connaît la ruine des uns et des autres? AUTRES PAROLES DES SAGES.
23 These things also belong to the wise. It is not good to have respect of persons in judgment.
Ce qui suit vient encore des sages: Il n'est pas bon, dans les jugements, d'avoir égard aux personnes.
24 He that saith to the wicked, Thou art righteous; him shall the people curse, nations shall abhor him:
Celui qui dit aux méchants: « Tu es juste », les peuples le maudissent, les nations l'exècrent.
25 But to them that rebuke him shall be delight, and a good blessing shall come upon them.
Mais ceux qui le corrigent sont applaudis, sur eux viennent la bénédiction et le bonheur.
26 Every man shall kiss his lips that giveth a right answer.
Il baise sur les lèvres celui qui répond des paroles justes.
27 Prepare thy work outside, and make it fit for thyself in the field; and afterwards build thy house.
Règle ton travail au dehors, applique-le à ton champ, puis tu bâtiras ta maison.
28 Be not a witness against thy neighbour without cause; and deceive not with thy lips.
Ne témoigne pas à la légère contre ton prochain: voudrais-tu tromper par tes lèvres?
29 Say not, I will do so to him as he hath done to me: I will render to the man according to his work.
Ne dis pas: « Comme il m'a fait, je lui ferai; je rendrai à cet homme selon ses œuvres. »
30 I went by the field of the slothful, and by the vineyard of the man void of understanding;
J'ai passé près du champ d'un paresseux, et près de la vigne d'un insensé.
31 And, lo, it was all grown over with thorns, and nettles had covered the face of it, and its stone wall was broken down.
Et voici, ... les épines y croissaient partout, les ronces en couvraient la surface, et le mur de pierres était écroulé.
32 Then I saw, and considered it well: I looked upon it, and received instruction.
J'ai regardé, et j'ai appliqué mon cœur, j'ai considéré et j'ai tiré cette leçon:
33 Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep:
« Un peu de sommeil, un peu d'assoupissement, un peu croiser les mains pour dormir,
34 So shall thy poverty come as one that travelleth; and thy want as an armed man.
et ta pauvreté viendra comme un rôdeur, et ton indigence comme un homme armé. » PROVERBES DE SALOMON RECUEILLIS PAR LES GENS D'ÉZÉCHIAS.
