Proverbs 23
1 When thou sittest to eat with a ruler, consider diligently what is before thee:
治める人と共に座して食事するとき、あなたの前にあるものを、よくわきまえ、
2 And put a knife to thy throat, if thou art a man given to appetite.
あなたがもし食をたしなむ者であるならば、あなたののどに刀をあてよ。
3 Be not desirous of his dainties: for they are deceitful food.
そのごちそうをむさぼり食べてはならない、これは人を欺く食物だからである。
4 Labour not to be rich: cease from thy own wisdom.
富を得ようと苦労してはならない、かしこく思いとどまるがよい。
5 Wilt thou set thy eyes upon that which is not? for riches certainly make to themselves wings; they fly away as an eagle toward heaven.
あなたの目をそれにとめると、それはない、富はたちまち自ら翼を生じて、わしのように天に飛び去るからだ。
6 Eat thou not the bread of him that hath an evil eye, neither desire thou his delicacies:
物惜しみする人のパンを食べてはならない、そのごちそうをむさぼり願ってはならない。
7 For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he: Eat and drink, saith he to thee; but his heart is not with thee.
彼は心のうちで勘定する人のように、「食え、飲め」とあなたに言うけれども、その心はあなたに真実ではない。
8 The morsel which thou hast eaten shalt thou vomit up, and lose thy sweet words.
あなたはついにその食べた物を吐き出すようになり、あなたのねんごろな言葉もむだになる。
9 Speak not in the ears of a fool: for he will despise the wisdom of thy words.
愚かな者の耳に語ってはならない、彼はあなたの言葉が示す知恵をいやしめるからだ。
10 Remove not the old landmark; and enter not into the fields of the fatherless:
古い地境を移してはならない、みなしごの畑を侵してはならない。
11 For their redeemer is mighty; he shall plead their cause with thee.
彼らのあがない主は強くいらせられ、あなたに逆らって彼らの訴えを弁護されるからだ。
12 Apply thy heart to instruction, and thy ears to the words of knowledge.
あなたの心を教訓に用い、あなたの耳を知識の言葉に傾けよ。
13 Withhold not correction from the child: for if thou beatest him with the rod, he shall not die.
子を懲らすことを、さし控えてはならない、むちで彼を打っても死ぬことはない。
もし、むちで彼を打つならば、その命を陰府から救うことができる。 (Sheol h7585)
15 My son, if thy heart be wise, my heart shall rejoice, even mine.
わが子よ、もしあなたの心が賢くあれば、わたしの心もまた喜び、
16 Yea, my reins shall rejoice, when thy lips speak right things.
もしあなたのくちびるが正しい事を言うならば、わたしの心も喜ぶ。
17 Let not thy heart envy sinners: but be thou in the fear of the LORD all the day long.
心に罪びとをうらやんではならない、ただ、ひねもす主を恐れよ。
18 For surely there is an end; and thy expectation shall not be cut off.
かならず後のよい報いがあって、あなたの望みは、すたらない。
19 Hear thou, my son, and be wise, and guide thy heart in the way.
わが子よ、よく聞いて、知恵を得よ、かつ、あなたの心を道に向けよ。
20 Be not among winebibbers; among gluttonous eaters of flesh:
酒にふけり、肉をたしなむ者と交わってはならない。
21 For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty: and drowsiness shall clothe a man with rags.
酒にふける者と、肉をたしなむ者とは貧しくなり、眠りをむさぼる者は、ぼろを身にまとうようになる。
22 Hearken to thy father that begat thee, and despise not thy mother when she is old.
あなたを生んだ父のいうことを聞き、年老いた母を軽んじてはならない。
23 Buy the truth, and sell it not; also wisdom, and instruction, and understanding.
真理を買え、これを売ってはならない、知恵と教訓と悟りをも買え。
24 The father of the righteous shall greatly rejoice: and he that begetteth a wise child shall have joy of him.
正しい人の父は大いによろこび、知恵ある子を生む者は子のために楽しむ。
25 Thy father and thy mother shall be glad, and she that bore thee shall rejoice.
あなたの父母を楽しませ、あなたを産んだ母を喜ばせよ。
26 My son, give me thy heart, and let thy eyes observe my ways.
わが子よ、あなたの心をわたしに与え、あなたの目をわたしの道に注げ。
27 For an harlot is a deep ditch; and an adulteress is a narrow pit.
遊女は深い穴のごとく、みだらな女は狭い井戸のようだ。
28 She also lieth in wait as for a prey, and increaseth the transgressors among men.
彼女は盗びとのように人をうかがい、かつ世の人のうちに、不信実な者を多くする。
29 Who hath woe? who hath sorrow? who hath contentions? who hath babbling? who hath wounds without cause? who hath redness of eyes?
災ある者はだれか、憂いある者はだれか、争いをする者はだれか、煩いある者はだれか、ゆえなく傷をうける者はだれか、赤い目をしている者はだれか。
30 They that tarry long at the wine; they that go to seek mixed wine.
酒に夜をふかす者、行って、混ぜ合わせた酒を味わう者である。
31 Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth its colour in the cup, when it moveth itself aright.
酒はあかく、杯の中にあわだち、なめらかにくだる、あなたはこれを見てはならない。
32 At the last it biteth like a serpent, and stingeth like an adder.
これはついに、へびのようにかみ、まむしのように刺す。
33 Thy eyes shall behold strange things, and thy heart shall utter perverse things.
あなたの目は怪しいものを見、あなたの心は偽りを言う。
34 And thou shalt be as he that lieth down in the midst of the sea, or as he that lieth upon the top of a mast.
あなたは海の中に寝ている人のように、帆柱の上に寝ている人のようになる。
35 They have stricken me, shalt thou say, and I was not sick; they have beaten me, and I felt it not: when shall I awake? I will seek it yet again.
あなたは言う、「人がわたしを撃ったが、わたしは痛くはなかった。わたしを、たたいたが、わたしは何も覚えはない。いつわたしはさめるのか、また酒を求めよう」と。
