Proverbs 20
1 Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whoever is deceived by it is not wise.
Moqueur est le vin, bruyante la boisson fermentée: qui s’en laisse troubler manque de sens.
2 The fear of a king is as the roaring of a lion: whoever provoketh him to anger sinneth against his own soul.
La terreur qu’inspire le roi est comme le rugissement du lion; qui l’irrite compromet sa vie.
3 It is an honour for a man to cease from strife: but every fool will be meddling.
C’Est l’honneur de l’homme de se tenir loin des disputes; mais tout sot s’y jette à corps perdu.
4 The sluggard will not plow by reason of the cold; therefore shall he beg in harvest, and have nothing.
Sous prétexte de froid le paresseux s’abstient de labourer; la moisson venue, il cherche et ne trouve rien.
5 Counsel in the heart of man is like deep water; but a man of understanding will draw it out.
Telles des eaux profondes, les idées abondent dans le cœur humain: l’homme avisé sait y puiser.
6 Most men will proclaim every one his own goodness: but a faithful man who can find?
Nombre d’hommes sont vantés pour leur bonté; mais qui trouvera un homme d’une entière loyauté?
7 The just man walketh in his integrity: his children are blessed after him.
Le juste marche dans son intégrité; heureux, ses enfants après lui!
8 A king that sitteth on the throne of judgment scattereth away all evil with his eyes.
Le roi, assis sur le trône de justice, disperse par ses regards tous les malfaiteurs.
9 Who can say, I have made my heart clean, I am pure from my sin?
Qui osera dire: "J’Ai débarrassé mon cœur de toute tache, je suis purifié de mes péchés?"
10 Differing weights, and differing measures, both of them are alike abomination to the LORD.
Deux poids et deux mesures sont également en horreur à l’Eternel.
11 Even a child is known by his doings, whether his work is pure, and whether it is right.
Déjà le jeune homme se révèle par ses actes, laissant deviner si son œuvre sera pure et droite.
12 The hearing ear, and the seeing eye, the LORD hath made even both of them.
L’Oreille qui entend, l’œil qui voit, l’Eternel les a faits tous deux.
13 Love not sleep, lest thou come to poverty; open thy eyes, and thou shalt be satisfied with bread.
N’Aime pas trop le sommeil, sous peine de t’appauvrir; aie les yeux ouverts et tu auras du pain en abondance.
14 It is nothing, it is nothing, saith the buyer: but when he is gone his way, then he boasteth.
"Mauvais, mauvais!" dit l’acheteur: il se retire et s’applaudit du marché.
15 There is gold, and an abundance of rubies: but the lips of knowledge are a precious jewel.
Il existe de l’or, une quantité de perles fines; mais la parure précieuse entre toutes, ce sont des lèvres intelligentes.
16 Take his garment that is surety for a stranger: and take a pledge of him for an adulteress.
Quelqu’un s’est-il porté garant pour un étranger, saisis son vêtement; s’il cautionne une inconnue, nantis-toi de son gage.
17 Bread of deceit is sweet to a man; but afterwards his mouth shall be filled with gravel.
Le pain dû au mensonge peut être agréable à l’homme; finalement, sa bouche est pleine de gravier.
18 Every purpose is established by counsel: and with good advice make war.
Que tes résolutions soient fondées sur la réflexion; fais la guerre suivant un plan habile.
19 He that goeth about as a talebearer revealeth secrets: therefore meddle not with him that flattereth with his lips.
Qui colporte des commérages trahit des secrets; n’aie aucun rapport avec le bavard imprudent.
20 Whoever curseth his father or his mother, his lamp shall be put out in obscure darkness.
Si quelqu’un maudit père et mère, que son flambeau soit comme un lumignon fumeux dans d’épaisses ténèbres!
21 An inheritance may be gotten hastily at the beginning; but the end of it shall not be blessed.
Un héritage souillé dans sa source ne saurait être béni dans la suite.
22 Say not thou, I will recompense evil; but wait on the LORD, and he shall save thee.
Ne dis pas: "Je veux rendre le mal!" Espère en Dieu, il te prêtera secours.
23 Differing weights are an abomination to the LORD; and a false balance is not good.
Deux poids sont en horreur à l’Eternel; des balances trompeuses, quelle détestable chose!
24 Man’s goings are of the LORD; how can a man then understand his own way?
Les pas de l’homme sont dirigés par Dieu; mais combien l’homme doit considérer sa voie!
25 It is a snare to the man who devoureth that which is holy, and after vows to make enquiry.
L’Abus des choses saintes est un piège pour l’homme, comme de prodiguer les vœux.
26 A wise king scattereth the wicked, and bringeth the wheel over them.
Un roi sage disperse les méchants et fait passer la roue sur eux.
27 The spirit of man is the lamp of the LORD, searching all the inward parts of the belly.
L’Âme de l’homme est un flambeau divin, qui promène ses lueurs dans les replis du cœur.
28 Mercy and truth preserve the king: and his throne is upheld by mercy.
La bonté et la vérité protègent le roi; le soutien de son trône, c’est l’amour.
29 The glory of young men is their strength: and the beauty of old men is the gray head.
La vigueur est la gloire de la jeunesse, les cheveux blancs la parure de la vieillesse.
30 The blueness of a wound cleanseth away evil: so do stripes the inward parts of the belly.
De cuisantes blessures sont comme un onguent pour le méchant, ainsi que des coups qui retentissent jusqu’au fond de l’être.
