Proverbs 18
1 Through desire a man, having separated himself, seeketh and intermeddleth with all wisdom.
Człowiek swej myśli, szuka tego, co mu się podoba, a w każdą rzecz wtrąca się.
2 A fool hath no delight in understanding, but that his heart may discover itself.
Nie kocha się głupi w roztropności, ale w tem, co mu objawia serce jego.
3 When the wicked cometh, then cometh also contempt, and with ignominy reproach.
Gdy przychodzi niezbożny, przychodzi też wzgarda, a z mężem lekkomyślnym urąganie.
4 The words of a man’s mouth are as deep waters, and the wellspring of wisdom as a flowing brook.
Słowa ust męża mądrego są jako wody głębokie, a źródło mądrości jako potok wylewający.
5 It is not good to accept the person of the wicked, to overthrow the righteous in judgment.
Nie dobra to, mieć wzgląd na osobę niezbożnego, aby był podwrócony sprawiedliwy w sądzie.
6 A fool’s lips enter into contention, and his mouth calleth for strokes.
Wargi głupiego zmierzają do swaru, a usta jego do bitwy wyzywają.
7 A fool’s mouth is his destruction, and his lips are the snare of his soul.
Usta głupiego są upadkiem jego, a wargi jego sidłem duszy jego.
8 The words of a talebearer are as wounds, and they go down into the innermost parts of the belly.
Słowa obmówcy są jako słowa zranionych, a wszakże przenikają do wnętrzności żywota.
9 He also that is slothful in his work is brother to him that is a great waster.
Kto niedbały w sprawach swoich, bratem jest utratnika.
10 The name of the LORD is a strong tower: the righteous runneth into it, and is safe.
Imię Pańskie jest mocną wieżą; sprawiedliwy się do niej uciecze, a wywyższony będzie.
11 The rich man’s wealth is his strong city, and as an high wall in his own conceit.
Majętność bogatego jest miastem jego mocnem, a jako mur wysoki w myśli jego.
12 Before destruction the heart of man is haughty, and before honour is humility.
Przed upadkiem podnosi się serce człowiecze, a sławę uprzedza poniżenie.
13 He that answereth a matter before he heareth it, it is folly and shame to him.
Kto odpowiada, pierwej niż wysłucha, głupstwo to jego i zelżywość.
14 The spirit of a man will sustain his infirmity; but a wounded spirit who can bear?
Duch męża znosi niemoc swoję; ale ducha utrapionego któż zniesie?
15 The heart of the prudent getteth knowledge; and the ear of the wise seeketh knowledge.
Serce rozumne nabywa umiejętności, a ucho mądrych szuka jej.
16 A man’s gift maketh room for him, and bringeth him before great men.
Dar człowieczy plac mu czyni, i przed wielmożnych przywodzi go.
17 He that is first in his own cause seemeth just; but his neighbour cometh and searcheth him.
Sprawiedliwym zda się ten, kto pierwszy w sprawie swojej; ale gdy przychodzi bliźni jego, dochodzi go.
18 The lot causeth contentions to cease, and parteth between the mighty.
Los uśmierza zwady, i między możnymi rozsądek czyni.
19 A brother offended is harder to be won than a strong city: and their contentions are like the bars of a castle.
Brat krzywdą urażony trudniejszy nad miasto niedobyte, a swary są jako zawory u pałacu.
20 A man’s belly shall be satisfied with the fruit of his mouth; and with the increase of his lips shall he be filled.
Z owocu ust każdego nasycon bywa żywot jego; urodzajem warg swych będzie nasycony.
21 Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit of it.
Śmierć i żywot jest w mocy języka, a kto go miłuje, będzie jadł owoce jego.
22 Whoever findeth a wife findeth a good thing, and obtaineth favour from the LORD.
Kto znalazł żonę, znalazł rzecz dobrą, i dostąpił łaski od Pana.
23 The poor useth entreaties; but the rich answereth roughly.
Ubogi pokornie mówi; ale bogaty odpowiada surowie.
24 A man that hath friends must show himself friendly: and there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother.
Człowiek, który ma przyjaciół, ma się obchodzić po przyjacielsku, ponieważ przyjaciel bywa przychylniejszy nad brata.
