Proverbs 18
1 Through desire a man, having separated himself, seeketh and intermeddleth with all wisdom.
Celui qui s'isole, suit sa fantaisie, il s'irrite contre tout ce qui est raisonnable.
2 A fool hath no delight in understanding, but that his heart may discover itself.
Ce n'est pas la raison qu'aime l'insensé, mais il aime à montrer son sentiment.
3 When the wicked cometh, then cometh also contempt, and with ignominy reproach.
Quand vient l'impiété vient aussi le mépris, et avec l'infamie, l'opprobre.
4 The words of a man’s mouth are as deep waters, and the wellspring of wisdom as a flowing brook.
Les paroles qui sortent de la bouche de l'homme, sont des eaux profondes; la source de la sagesse est une rivière abondante.
5 It is not good to accept the person of the wicked, to overthrow the righteous in judgment.
Il est mal de prendre parti pour l'impie, afin de débouter le juste dans le jugement.
6 A fool’s lips enter into contention, and his mouth calleth for strokes.
Les lèvres de l'insensé apportent les querelles, et sa bouche excite aux coups.
7 A fool’s mouth is his destruction, and his lips are the snare of his soul.
La bouche de l'impie est pour lui une cause de ruine, et ses lèvres, un piège à sa vie.
8 The words of a talebearer are as wounds, and they go down into the innermost parts of the belly.
Les propos du rapporteur sont comme des friandises; ils se glissent jusqu'au fond des entrailles.
9 He also that is slothful in his work is brother to him that is a great waster.
Celui-là aussi qui travaille lâchement, est frère du dissipateur.
10 The name of the LORD is a strong tower: the righteous runneth into it, and is safe.
Le nom de l'Éternel est une forte tour, le juste y accourt, et se trouve en lieu sûr.
11 The rich man’s wealth is his strong city, and as an high wall in his own conceit.
L'opulence du riche est sa forteresse, et comme une haute muraille, dans son opinion.
12 Before destruction the heart of man is haughty, and before honour is humility.
Avant la chute le cœur de l'homme s'élève; et l'humilité précède la gloire.
13 He that answereth a matter before he heareth it, it is folly and shame to him.
Qui répond avant d'écouter, manque de sens, et sera confus.
14 The spirit of a man will sustain his infirmity; but a wounded spirit who can bear?
L'âme de l'homme supporte ses souffrances; mais une âme abattue, qui la relèvera?
15 The heart of the prudent getteth knowledge; and the ear of the wise seeketh knowledge.
Le cœur de l'homme de sens acquiert la science, et l'oreille des sages est à la recherche de la science.
16 A man’s gift maketh room for him, and bringeth him before great men.
Par des présents l'homme se fait jour; et ils l'introduisent chez les grands.
17 He that is first in his own cause seemeth just; but his neighbour cometh and searcheth him.
Il [paraît] juste celui qui dans sa cause parle le premier; mais que vienne sa partie, et alors examine-le.
18 The lot causeth contentions to cease, and parteth between the mighty.
Le sort met fin aux contestations; et entre les puissants il décide.
19 A brother offended is harder to be won than a strong city: and their contentions are like the bars of a castle.
Un frère est plus rebelle qu'une ville forte; et les querelles [des frères] sont comme les verrous d'un palais.
20 A man’s belly shall be satisfied with the fruit of his mouth; and with the increase of his lips shall he be filled.
Des fruits de sa bouche chacun est nourri, il est nourri de ce que ses lèvres lui rapportent.
21 Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit of it.
La mort et la vie dépendent de la langue; celui qui en aime l'usage, en goûtera les fruits.
22 Whoever findeth a wife findeth a good thing, and obtaineth favour from the LORD.
Trouver une femme c'est trouver le bonheur, et obtenir une faveur de l'Éternel.
23 The poor useth entreaties; but the rich answereth roughly.
Le pauvre parle en suppliant; mais le riche répond durement.
24 A man that hath friends must show himself friendly: and there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother.
Tel a beaucoup de relations à son détriment; mais, ayez un ami, il s'attache plus qu'un frère.
