Luke 14
1 And it came to pass, as he went into the house of one of the chief Pharisees to eat bread on the sabbath, that they watched him.
Comme il entrait dans la maison d'un des chefs des pharisiens, un jour de sabbat, pour manger du pain, ils l'observaient.
2 And, behold, there was a certain man before him who had the dropsy.
Et voici qu'un homme atteint d'hydropisie était en face de lui.
3 And Jesus answering spoke to the lawyers and Pharisees, saying, Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath?
Jésus, prenant la parole, s'adressa aux juristes et aux pharisiens, et dit: « Est-il permis de guérir le jour du sabbat? »
4 And they held their peace. And he took him, and healed him, and let him go;
Mais ils se sont tus. Il le prit, le guérit, et le laissa partir.
5 And answered them, saying, Which of you shall have a donkey or an ox fallen into a pit, and will not immediately pull him out on the sabbath day?
Il leur répondit: « Lequel d'entre vous, si son fils ou son bœuf tombait dans un puits, ne le retirerait pas immédiatement un jour de sabbat? »
6 And they could not answer him again to these things.
Ils ne purent lui répondre sur ces choses.
7 And he put forth a parable to those who were invited, when he marked how they chose out the best places; saying to them,
Il adressa une parabole aux invités, en remarquant qu'ils choisissaient les meilleures places, et il leur dit:
8 When thou art invited by any man to a wedding, sit not down in the best place; lest a more honourable man than thou be invited by him;
« Lorsque quelqu'un vous invite à des noces, ne vous asseyez pas à la meilleure place, car il se peut que quelqu'un de plus honorable que vous soit invité par lui,
9 And he that invited thee and him shall come and say to thee, Give this man place; and thou begin with shame to take the lowest place.
et que celui qui vous a invités tous les deux vienne vous dire: « Faites place à cette personne ». Alors tu commencerais, avec honte, à prendre la place la plus basse.
10 But when thou art invited, go and sit down in the lowest place; that when he that invited thee cometh, he may say to thee, Friend, go up higher: then shalt thou have honour in the presence of them that sit eating with thee.
Mais quand tu es invité, va t'asseoir à la place la plus basse, afin que celui qui t'a invité vienne te dire: « Mon ami, monte plus haut ». Alors tu seras honoré en présence de tous ceux qui seront à table avec toi.
11 For whoever exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.
Car quiconque s'élève sera abaissé, et quiconque s'abaisse sera élevé. »
12 Then said he also to him that invited him, When thou givest a dinner or a supper, call not thy friends, nor thy brethren, neither thy kinsmen, nor thy rich neighbours; lest they also bid thee again, and a recompence be made thee.
Il dit aussi à celui qui l'avait invité: « Quand tu prépares un dîner ou un souper, n'appelle pas tes amis, ni tes frères, ni tes parents, ni de riches voisins, car ils pourraient aussi te rendre la pareille et te payer.
13 But when thou givest a feast, call the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind:
Mais quand tu fais un festin, demande aux pauvres, aux estropiés, aux boiteux ou aux aveugles;
14 And thou shalt be blessed; for they cannot recompense thee: for thou shalt be recompensed at the resurrection of the just.
et tu seras béni, car ils n'ont pas les moyens de te rembourser. Car vous serez remboursés à la résurrection des justes. »
15 And when one of them that sat eating with him heard these things, he said to him, Blessed is he that shall eat bread in the kingdom of God.
Lorsqu'un de ceux qui étaient à table avec lui entendit ces choses, il lui dit: « Heureux celui qui fera un festin dans le Royaume de Dieu! »
16 Then said he to him, A certain man gave a great supper, and invited many:
Mais il lui dit: « Un homme a fait un grand souper, et il a invité beaucoup de gens.
17 And sent his servant at supper time to say to them that were invited, Come; for all things are now ready.
À l'heure du repas, il envoya son serviteur dire aux convives: « Venez, car tout est prêt maintenant.
18 And they all with one consent began to make excuse. The first said to him, I have bought a piece of ground, and I must needs go and see it: I pray thee have me excused.
Tous, comme un seul homme, se mirent à s'excuser. Le premier lui dit: « J'ai acheté un champ, et je dois aller le voir. Je vous prie de m'excuser.
19 And another said, I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I go to try them out: I pray thee have me excused.
Un autre dit: « J'ai acheté cinq paires de bœufs, et je dois aller les essayer. Je vous prie de m'excuser.
20 And another said, I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come.
Un autre dit: « J'ai épousé une femme, et je ne peux donc pas venir.
21 So that servant came, and showed his lord these things. Then the master of the house being angry said to his servant, Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in here the poor, and the maimed, and the lame, and the blind.
« Ce serviteur vint, et raconta ces choses à son maître. Le maître de maison, irrité, dit à son serviteur: « Va vite dans les rues et les ruelles de la ville, et amène les pauvres, les estropiés, les aveugles et les boiteux.
22 And the servant said, Lord, it is done as thou hast commanded, and yet there is room.
« Le serviteur dit: « Seigneur, c'est fait comme tu l'as ordonné, et il y a encore de la place ».
23 And the lord said to the servant, Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled.
Le maître dit au serviteur: « Va sur les routes et dans les haies, et oblige-les à entrer, afin que ma maison soit remplie.
24 For I say to you, That none of those men who were invited shall taste my supper.
Car je te dis qu'aucun de ces hommes qui ont été invités ne goûtera à mon souper.'"
25 And there went great multitudes with him: and he turned, and said to them,
Or, une grande foule allait avec lui. Il se tourna vers eux et leur dit:
26 If any man cometh to me, and hateth not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.
« Si quelqu'un vient à moi et ne fait pas abstraction de son père, de sa mère, de sa femme, de ses enfants, de ses frères et de ses sœurs, et même de sa propre vie, il ne peut être mon disciple.
27 And whoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple.
Celui qui ne porte pas sa propre croix et ne me suit pas, ne peut pas être mon disciple.
28 For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost, whether he hath sufficient to finish it?
En effet, lequel d'entre vous, s'il veut construire une tour, ne s'assied d'abord pour en calculer le coût, afin de voir s'il a de quoi l'achever?
29 Lest perhaps, after he hath laid the foundation, and is not able to finish it, all that behold it begin to mock him,
Ou bien, lorsqu'il a posé le fondement et qu'il ne peut pas terminer, tous ceux qui le voient commencent à se moquer de lui,
30 Saying, This man began to build, and was not able to finish.
en disant: « Cet homme a commencé à bâtir et n'a pas pu terminer ».
31 Or what king, going to make war against another king, sitteth not down first, and consulteth whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him that cometh against him with twenty thousand?
Ou quel roi, lorsqu'il va à la rencontre d'un autre roi dans une guerre, ne s'assied pas d'abord pour examiner s'il est capable, avec dix mille hommes, de rencontrer celui qui vient contre lui avec vingt mille hommes?
32 Or else, while the other is yet a great way off, he sendeth a delegation, and desireth conditions of peace.
Ou bien, alors que l'autre est encore loin, il envoie un émissaire et demande des conditions de paix.
33 So likewise, whoever he is of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple.
Ainsi donc, celui d'entre vous qui ne renonce pas à tout ce qu'il possède, ne peut être mon disciple.
34 Salt is good: but if the salt hath lost its savour, how shall it be seasoned?
« Le sel est bon, mais si le sel devient plat et sans saveur, avec quoi l'assaisonnez-vous?
35 It is neither fit for the land, nor yet for the dunghill; but men cast it out. He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.
Il n'est bon ni pour la terre ni pour le tas de fumier. On le jette dehors. Que celui qui a des oreilles pour entendre, entende. »
