James 3
1 My brethren, be not many teachers, knowing that we shall receive the greater judgment.
Veljeni, älkööt aivan monet teistä pyrkikö opettajiksi, sillä te tiedätte, että me saamme sitä kovemman tuomion.
2 For in many things we all offend. If any man stumble not in word, the same is a perfect man, able also to bridle the whole body.
Sillä monessa kohden me kaikki hairahdumme. Jos joku ei hairahdu puheessa, niin hän on täydellinen mies ja kykenee hillitsemään myös koko ruumiinsa.
3 Behold, we put bits in the horses’ mouths, that they may obey us; and we turn about their whole body.
Kun panemme suitset hevosten suuhun, että ne meitä tottelisivat, niin voimme ohjata niiden koko ruumiin.
4 Behold also the ships, which though they are so great, and are driven by fierce winds, yet they are turned about with a very small helm, wherever the pilot willeth.
Katso, laivatkin, vaikka ovat niin suuria ja tuimain tuulten kuljetettavia, ohjataan varsin pienellä peräsimellä, minne perämiehen mieli tekee.
5 Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth!
Samoin myös kieli on pieni jäsen ja voi kuitenkin kerskata suurista asioista. Katso, kuinka pieni tuli, ja kuinka suuren metsän se sytyttää!
6 And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire from hell. (Geenna g1067)
Myös kieli on tuli, on vääryyden maailma; kieli on se meidän jäsenistämme, joka tahraa koko ruumiin, sytyttää tuleen elämän pyörän, itse syttyen helvetistä. (Geenna g1067)
7 For every kind of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of creatures in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed by mankind:
Sillä kaiken luonnon, sekä petojen että lintujen, sekä matelijain että merieläinten luonnon, voi ihmisluonto kesyttää ja onkin kesyttänyt;
8 But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.
mutta kieltä ei kukaan ihminen voi kesyttää; se on levoton ja paha, täynnä kuolettavaa myrkkyä.
9 With it we bless God, even the Father; and with it we curse men, who are made after the similitude of God.
Kielellä me kiitämme Herraa ja Isää, ja sillä me kiroamme ihmisiä, Jumalan kaltaisiksi luotuja;
10 Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be.
samasta suusta lähtee kiitos ja kirous. Näin ei saa olla, veljeni.
11 Doth a fountain send forth at the same place sweet water and bitter?
Uhkuuko lähde samasta silmästä makeaa ja karvasta vettä?
12 Can the fig tree, my brethren, bear olive berries? or a vine, figs? so no fountain can yield both salt water and fresh.
Eihän, veljeni, viikunapuu voi tuottaa öljymarjoja eikä viinipuu viikunoita? Eikä myöskään suolainen lähde voi antaa makeata vettä.
13 Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him show by a good behaviour his works with meekness of wisdom.
Kuka on viisas ja ymmärtäväinen teidän joukossanne? Tuokoon hän näkyviin tekonsa hyvällä vaelluksellaan viisauden sävyisyydessä.
14 But if ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, glory not, and lie not against the truth.
Mutta jos teillä on katkera kiivaus ja riitaisuus sydämessänne, niin älkää kerskatko älkääkä valhetelko totuutta vastaan.
15 This wisdom descendeth not from above, but is earthly, sensual, demonic.
Tämä ei ole se viisaus, joka ylhäältä tulee, vaan se on maallista, sielullista, riivaajien viisautta.
16 For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work.
Sillä missä kiivaus ja riitaisuus on, siellä on epäjärjestys ja kaikkinainen paha meno.
17 But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and reasonable, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.
Mutta ylhäältä tuleva viisaus on ensiksikin puhdas, sitten rauhaisa, lempeä, taipuisa, täynnä laupeutta ja hyviä hedelmiä, se ei epäile, ei teeskentele.
18 And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace by them that make peace.
Vanhurskauden hedelmä kylvetään rauhassa rauhan tekijöille.
