Genesis 33
1 And Jacob lifted up his eyes, and looked, and, behold, Esau came, and with him four hundred men. And he divided the children to Leah, and to Rachel, and to the two handmaids.
Jacob leva les yeux et regarda, et voici, Esaü venait, ayant avec lui quatre cents hommes. Ayant distribué les enfants par groupes auprès de Lia, auprès de Rachel et auprès des deux servantes,
2 And he put the handmaids and their children foremost, and Leah and her children after, and Rachel and Joseph last of all.
il plaça en tête les servantes avec leurs enfants, puis Lia avec ses enfants, et enfin Rachel avec Joseph.
3 And he passed on before them, and bowed himself to the ground seven times, till he came near to his brother.
Lui-même passa devant eux, et il se courba vers la terre sept fois, jusqu'à ce qu'il fût proche de son frère Esaü.
4 And Esau ran to meet him, and embraced him, and fell on his neck, and kissed him: and they wept.
Esaü courut à sa rencontre, l'embrassa, se jeta à son cou et le baisa; et ils pleurèrent.
5 And he lifted up his eyes, and saw the women and the children; and said, Who are those with thee? And he said, The children whom God hath graciously given to thy servant.
Puis, levant les yeux, Esaü vit les femmes et les enfants, et il dit: " Qui sont ceux que tu as là? " Jacob répondit: " Ce sont les enfants que Dieu a accordés à ton serviteur. "
6 Then the handmaidens came near, they and their children, and they bowed themselves.
Les servantes s'approchèrent, elles et leurs enfants, et se prosternèrent.
7 And Leah also with her children came near, and bowed themselves: and after came Joseph near and Rachel, and they bowed themselves.
Lia et ses enfants s'approchèrent aussi, et ils se prosternèrent; ensuite s'approchèrent Joseph et Rachel, et ils se prosternèrent.
8 And he said, What meanest thou by all this drove which I met? And he said, These are to find grace in the sight of my lord.
Et Esaü dit: " Que veux-tu faire avec tout ce camp que j'ai rencontré? " Et Jacob dit: " C'est pour trouver grâce aux yeux de mon seigneur. "
9 And Esau said, I have enough, my brother; keep what thou hast to thyself.
Esaü dit: " Je suis dans l'abondance, mon frère; garde ce qui est à toi. "
10 And Jacob said, Nay, I pray thee, if now I have found grace in thy sight, then receive my present at my hand: for therefore I have seen thy face, as though I had seen the face of God, and thou hast been pleased with me.
Et Jacob dit: " Non, je te prie, si j'ai trouvé grâce à tes yeux, accepte mon présent de ma main; car c'est pour cela que j'ai vu ta face comme on voit la face de Dieu, et tu m'as accueilli favorablement.
11 Take, I pray thee, my blessing that is brought to thee; because God hath dealt graciously with me, and because I have enough. And he urged him, and he took it.
Accepte donc mon offrande qui t'a été amenée, car Dieu m'a accordé sa faveur et je ne manque de rien. " Il le pressa si bien qu'Esaü accepta.
12 And he said, Let us take our journey, and let us go, and I will go before thee.
Esaü dit: " Partons, mettons-nous en route; je marcherai devant toi. "
13 And he said to him, My lord knoweth that the children are tender, and the flocks and herds with young are with me: and if men should overdrive them one day, all the flock will die.
Jacob répondit: " Mon seigneur sait que les enfants sont délicats, et que je suis chargé de brebis et de vaches qui allaitent; si on les pressait un seul jour, tout le troupeau périrait.
14 Let my lord, I pray thee, pass over before his servant: and I will lead on slowly, according as the cattle that go before me and the children are able to endure, until I come to my lord to Seir.
Que mon seigneur prenne les devants sur son serviteur, et moi, je suivrai doucement, au pas du troupeau qui marche devant moi, et au pas des enfants, jusqu'à ce que j'arrive chez mon seigneur, à Séir. "
15 And Esau said, Let me now leave with thee some of the people that are with me. And he said, What needeth it? let me find grace in the sight of my lord.
Esaü dit: " Permets du moins que je laisse auprès de toi une partie des gens qui sont avec moi. " Jacob répondit: " Pourquoi cela? Que je trouve grâce aux yeux de mon seigneur. "
16 So Esau returned that day on his way to Seir.
Et Esaü reprit ce jour-là le chemin de Séir.
17 And Jacob journeyed to Succoth, and built for himself an house, and made booths for his cattle: therefore the name of the place is called Succoth.
Jacob partit pour Socoth et il se construisit une maison. Il fit aussi des cabanes pour ses troupeaux; c'est pourquoi on a appelé ce lieu Socoth.
18 And Jacob came to Shalem, a city of Shechem, which is in the land of Canaan, when he came from Padanaram; and pitched his tent before the city.
A son retour de Paddan-Aram, Jacob arriva heureusement à la ville de Sichem, au pays de Chanaan, et il campa devant la ville.
19 And he bought the piece of land, where he had spread his tent, at the hand of the children of Hamor, Shechem’s father, for an hundred pieces of money.
Il acheta des fils de Hémor, père de Sichem, pour cent késitas, la pièce de terre où il avait dressé sa tente;
20 And he built there an altar, and called it Elelohe-Israel.
il éleva là un autel, et l'appela El-Elohé-Israël.
