Ezekiel 18
1 The word of the LORD came to me again, saying,
La parole de Yahweh me fut adressée en ces termes:
2 What mean ye, that ye use this proverb concerning the land of Israel, saying, The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the children’s teeth are set on edge?
" Pourquoi donc proférez-vous ce proverbe, au sujet du pays d'Israël: " Les pères mangent du verjus, et les dents des fils en sont agacées? "
3 As I live, saith the Lord GOD, ye shall not have occasion any more to use this proverb in Israel.
Je suis vivant, — oracle du Seigneur Yahweh: Vous n'aurez plus lieu de proférer ce proverbe en Israël.
4 Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine: the soul that sinneth, it shall die.
Voici que toutes les âmes sont à moi: l'âme du fils comme l'âme du père est à moi; l'âme qui pèche sera celle qui mourra.
5 But if a man is just, and doeth that which is lawful and right,
Si un homme est juste et pratique le droit et la justice;
6 And hath not eaten upon the mountains, neither hath lifted up his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel, neither hath defiled his neighbour’s wife, neither hath come near to a polluted woman,
s'il ne mange pas sur les montagnes et n'élève pas les yeux vers les idoles infâmes de la maison d'Israël; s'il ne déshonore pas la femme de son prochain et ne s'approche pas d'une femme pendant sa souillure;
7 And hath not oppressed any, but hath restored to the debtor his pledge, hath stripped none by violence, hath given his bread to the hungry, and hath covered the naked with a garment;
s'il n'opprime personne, s'il rend au débiteur son gage, s'il ne commet pas de rapines, s'il donne son pain à celui qui a faim et couvre d'un vêtement celui qui est nu;
8 He that hath not given forth upon interest, neither hath taken any increase, that hath withdrawn his hand from iniquity, hath executed true judgment between man and man,
s'il ne prête pas à usure et ne prend pas d'intérêt; s'il détourne sa main de l'iniquité; s'il juge selon la vérité entre un homme et un autre;
9 Hath walked in my statutes, and hath kept my judgments, to deal truly; he is just, he shall surely live, saith the Lord GOD.
s'il suit mes préceptes et observe mes lois, en agissant avec fidélité, celui-là est juste; il vivra — oracle du Seigneur Yahweh.
10 If he begetteth a son that is a robber, a shedder of blood, and that doeth the like any one of these things,
Mais cet homme engendre un fils violent, qui verse le sang et qui fait à son frère quelqu'une de ces choses,
11 And that doeth not any of those duties, but even hath eaten upon the mountains, and defiled his neighbour’s wife,
— mais lui-même n'a pas fait toutes ces choses; — il mange sur les montagnes, il déshonore la femme de son prochain, il opprime le pauvre et le malheureux;
12 Hath oppressed the poor and needy, hath stripped by violence, hath not restored the pledge, and hath lifted up his eyes to the idols, hath committed abomination,
il commet des rapines, il ne rend pas le gage, il lève les yeux vers les idoles, il commet une abomination;
13 Hath given forth upon interest, and hath taken increase: shall he then live? he shall not live: he hath done all these abominations; he shall surely die; his blood shall be upon him.
il prête à usure et prend un intérêt, et il vivrait!... Il ne vivra pas; il a commis toutes ces abominations, il doit mourir; son sang sera sur lui.
14 Now, lo, if he begetteth a son, that seeth all his father’s sins which he hath done, and considereth, and doeth not likewise,
Mais voici qu'un homme a engendré un fils; ce fils a vu tous les péchés qu'a commis son père; il les a vus et n'a rien fait de semblable.
15 That hath not eaten upon the mountains, neither hath lifted up his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel, hath not defiled his neighbour’s wife,
Il n'a pas mangé sur les montagnes, il n'a pas levé les yeux vers les idoles infâmes de la maison d'Israël; il n'a pas déshonoré la femme de son prochain;
16 Neither hath oppressed any, hath not withheld the pledge, neither hath stripped by violence, but hath given his bread to the hungry, and hath covered the naked with a garment,
il n'a opprimé personne et n'a pas pris de gage, il n'a pas commis de rapines; il a donné son pain à l'affamé, il a couvert d'un vêtement celui qui était nu;
17 That hath taken off his hand from the poor, that hath not received interest nor increase, hath executed my judgments, hath walked in my statutes; he shall not die for the iniquity of his father, he shall surely live.
il n'a pas fait peser sa main sur le pauvre, il n'a pris ni usure, ni intérêt; il a observé mes lois et suivi mes préceptes, — celui-là ne mourra point pour l'iniquité de son père; il vivra certainement.
18 As for his father, because he cruelly oppressed, stripped his brother by violence, and did that which is not good among his people, lo, even he shall die in his iniquity.
Son père qui a multiplié la violence, qui a pratiqué la rapine envers son frère et qui a fait ce qui n'était pas bien au milieu de son peuple, voici que lui, il mourra pour son iniquité.
19 Yet say ye, Why? doth not the son bear the iniquity of the father? When the son hath done that which is lawful and right, and hath kept all my statutes, and hath done them, he shall surely live.
Et vous dites: " Pourquoi le fils ne porte-t-il pas l'iniquité de son père? " Mais le fils a agi suivant le droit et la justice, il a observé tous mes préceptes et les a mis en pratique: il vivra certainement.
20 The soul that sinneth, it shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son: the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him.
L'âme qui pèche, c'est elle qui mourra; le fils ne portera pas l'iniquité du père, et le père ne portera pas l'iniquité du fils; la justice du juste sera sur lui, et la méchanceté du méchant sera sur lui.
21 But if the wicked will turn from all his sins that he hath committed, and keep all my statutes, and do that which is lawful and right, he shall surely live, he shall not die.
Quant au méchant, s'il se détourne de tous ses péchés qu'il commis, s'il observe tous mes préceptes et agit selon le droit et la justice, il vivra, il ne mourra pas.
22 All his transgressions that he hath committed, they shall not be mentioned to him: in his righteousness that he hath done he shall live.
De toutes les transgressions qu'il a commises, on ne se souviendra plus; à cause de la justice qu'il a pratiquée, il vivra.
23 Have I any pleasure at all that the wicked should die? saith the Lord GOD: and not that he should return from his ways, and live?
Prendrai-je plaisir à la mort du méchant, — oracle du Seigneur Yahweh? N'est-ce pas plutôt à ce qu'il se détourne de ses voies et qu'il vive?
24 But when the righteous turneth away from his righteousness, and committeth iniquity, and doeth according to all the abominations that the wicked man doeth, shall he live? All his righteousness that he hath done shall not be mentioned: in his trespass that he hath trespassed, and in his sin that he hath sinned, in them shall he die.
Et si le juste se détourne de sa justice et qu'il commette l'iniquité, selon toutes les abominations que le méchant commet, — il les ferait et il vivrait!... — de toutes ses œuvres de justice qu'il a pratiquées, on ne se souviendra plus; à cause de la transgression dont il s'est rendu coupable et de son péché qu'il a commis, à cause de cela il mourra.
25 Yet ye say, The way of the Lord is not equal. Hear now, O house of Israel; Is not my way equal? are not your ways unequal?
Vous dites: " La voie du Seigneur n'est pas droite? " Ecoutez donc, maison d'Israël: Est-ce ma voie qui n'est pas droite? Ne sont-ce pas vos voies qui ne sont pas droites?
26 When a righteous man turneth away from his righteousness, and committeth iniquity, and dieth in them; for his iniquity that he hath done shall he die.
Quand le juste se détourne de sa justice et commet l'iniquité, et que là-dessus il meurt, c'est à cause de l'iniquité qu'il à commise qu'il meurt.
27 Again, when a wicked man turneth away from his wickedness that he hath committed, and doeth that which is lawful and right, he shall save his soul alive.
Et si le méchant se détourne de sa méchanceté qu'il a pratiquée et qu'il agisse suivant le droit et la justice, il fera vivre son âme.
28 Because he considereth, and turneth away from all his transgressions that he hath committed, he shall surely live, he shall not die.
S'il ouvre les yeux et se détourne de toutes ses transgressions qu'il a commises, il vivra certainement, et il ne mourra point.
29 Yet saith the house of Israel, The way of the Lord is not equal. O house of Israel, are not my ways equal? are not your ways unequal?
Mais la maison d'Israël dit: " La voie du Seigneur n'est pas droite. " Sont-ce mes voies qui ne sont pas droites, maison d'Israël? Ne sont-ce pas vos voies qui ne sont pas droites?
30 Therefore I will judge you, O house of Israel, every one according to his ways, saith the Lord GOD. Repent, and turn yourselves from all your transgressions; so iniquity shall not be your ruin.
C'est pourquoi je vous jugerai chacun selon ses voies, maison d'Israël, — oracle du Seigneur Yahweh. Détournez-vous et convertissez-vous de toutes vos transgressions, et l'iniquité ne deviendra pas votre ruine.
31 Cast away from you all your transgressions, by which ye have transgressed; and make for yourselves a new heart and a new spirit: for why will ye die, O house of Israel?
Rejetez loin de vous toutes les transgressions que vous avez commises; faites-vous un cœur nouveau et un esprit nouveau. Pourquoi mourriez-vous, maison d'Israël?
32 For I have no pleasure in the death of him that dieth, saith the Lord GOD: therefore turn ye, and live.
Car je ne prends point plaisir à la mort de celui qui meurt, — oracle du Seigneur Yahweh; convertissez-vous donc et vivez. "
