Acts 19
1 And it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper regions came to Ephesus: and finding certain disciples,
Or, pendant qu’Apollos était à Corinthe, Paul, après avoir parcouru les hautes régions, arriva à Ephèse. Ayant rencontré quelques disciples,
2 He said to them, Have ye received the Holy Spirit since ye believed? And they said to him, We have not so much as heard whether there is any Holy Spirit.
il leur dit: « Avez-vous reçu le Saint-Esprit quand vous avez cru? » Ils lui répondirent: « Nous n’avons pas même entendu dire qu’il y ait un Saint-Esprit.
3 And he said to them, Into what then were ye baptized? And they said, Into John’s baptism.
« Quel baptême avez-vous donc reçu? » demanda Paul. Ils dirent: « Le baptême de Jean. »
4 Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying to the people, that they should believe on him who should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.
Paul dit alors: « Jean a baptisé du baptême de pénitence, en disant au peuple de croire en celui qui venait après lui, c’est-à-dire en Jésus. »
5 When they heard this, they were baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus.
Ayant entendu ces paroles, ils se firent baptiser au nom du Seigneur Jésus.
6 And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Spirit came on them; and they spoke with tongues, and prophesied.
Lorsque Paul leur eut imposé les mains, le Saint-Esprit vint sur eux, et ils se mirent à parler des langues et à prophétiser.
7 And all the men were about twelve.
Ils étaient environ douze en tout.
8 And he went into the synagogue, and spoke boldly for the space of three months, disputing and persuading the things concerning the kingdom of God.
Ensuite Paul entra dans la synagogue, et pendant trois mois, il y parla avec beaucoup d’assurance, discourant d’une manière persuasive sur les choses qui concernent le royaume de Dieu.
9 But when some were hardened, and believed not, but spoke evil of that way before the multitude, he departed from them, and separated the disciples, disputing daily in the school of one Tyrannus.
Mais, comme quelques-uns restaient endurcis et incrédules, décriant devant le peuple la voie du eigneur, il se sépara d’eux, prit à part les disciples et discourut chaque jour dans l’école d’un nommé Tyrannus.
10 And this continued for the space of two years; so that all they who dwelt in Asia heard the word of the Lord Jesus, both Jews and Greeks.
Ce qu’il fit durant deux ans, de sorte que tous ceux qui habitaient l’Asie, Juifs et Grecs, entendirent la parole du Seigneur.
11 And God wrought special miracles by the hands of Paul:
Et Dieu faisait des miracles extraordinaires par les mains de Paul,
12 So that from his body were brought to the sick, handkerchiefs or aprons, and the diseases departed from them, and the evil spirits went out of them.
au point qu’on appliquait sur les malades des mouchoirs et des ceintures qui avaient touché son corps, et les maladies les quittaient, et les esprits mauvais étaient chassés.
13 Then certain of the vagabond Jews, exorcists, took upon them to call over them who had evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, We adjure you by Jesus whom Paul preacheth.
Quelques-uns des exorcistes Juifs qui couraient le pays essayèrent aussi d’invoquer le nom du Seigneur Jésus sur ceux qui avaient des esprits malins, en disant: « Je vous adjure par Jésus que Paul prêche. »
14 And there were seven sons of one Sceva, a Jew, and chief of the priests, who did so.
Or ils étaient sept fils de Scéva, grand prêtre juif, qui se livraient à cette pratique.
15 And the evil spirit answered and said, Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are ye?
L’esprit malin leur répondit: « Je connais Jésus et je sais qui est Paul; mais vous, qui êtes-vous? »
16 And the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, and overcame them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded.
Et l’homme qui était possédé de l’esprit malin se jeta sur eux, s’en rendit maître et les maltraita si fort, qu’ils s’enfuirent de cette maison nus et blessés.
17 And this was known to all the Jews and Greeks also dwelling at Ephesus; and fear fell on them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified.
Ce fait étant venu à la connaissance de tous les Juifs et de tous les Grecs qui demeuraient à Ephèse, la crainte tomba sur eux tous, et le nom du Seigneur Jésus fut glorifié.
18 And many that believed came, and confessed, and showed their deeds.
Un grand nombre de ceux qui avaient cru venaient confesser et déclarer leurs actions.
19 Many also of them who practised magic brought their books together, and burned them before all men: and they counted the price of them, and found it fifty thousand pieces of silver.
Et parmi ceux qui s’étaient adonnés aux pratiques superstitieuses, beaucoup apportèrent leurs livres et les brûlèrent devant tout le peuple: en estimant la valeur de ces livres on trouva cinquante mille pièces d’argent:
20 So mightily grew the word of God and prevailed.
tant la parole du Seigneur s’étendait avec force et se montrait puissante!
21 After these things were ended, Paul purposed in the spirit, when he had passed through Macedonia and Achaia, to go to Jerusalem, saying, After I have been there, I must also see Rome.
Après cela, Paul résolut d’aller à Jérusalem, en traversant la Macédoine et l’Achaïe. « Après que j’aurai été là, se disait-il, il faut aussi que je voie Rome. »
22 So he sent into Macedonia two of them that ministered to him, Timothy and Erastus; but he himself stayed in Asia for a season.
Il envoya en Macédoine deux de ses auxiliaires, Timothée et Eraste, et lui-même resta encore quelque temps en Asie.
23 And the same time there arose no small stir about that way.
Il survint en ce temps-là un grand tumulte au sujet de la voie du Seigneur.
24 For a certain man named Demetrius, a silversmith, who made silver shrines for Diana, brought no small gain to the craftsmen;
Un orfèvre, nommé Démétrius, fabriquait en argent de petits temples de Diane, et procurait à ses ouvriers un gain considérable.
25 Whom he called together with the workmen of like occupation, and said, Sirs, ye know that by this craft we have our wealth.
Les ayant rassemblés, avec ceux du même métier, il leur dit: « Mes amis, vous savez que notre bien-être dépend de cette industrie;
26 Moreover ye see and hear, that not alone at Ephesus, but almost throughout all Asia, this Paul hath persuaded and turned away many people, saying that they are no gods, which are made with hands:
et vous voyez et entendez dire que, non seulement à Ephèse, mais encore dans presque toute l’Asie, ce Paul a persuadé et détourné une foule de gens, en disant que les dieux faits de main d’homme ne sont pas des dieux.
27 So that not only this our craft is in danger to be set at nought; but also that the temple of the great goddess Diana should be despised, and her magnificence should be destroyed, whom all Asia and the world worshippeth.
Il est donc à craindre, non seulement que notre industrie ne tombe dans le discrédit, mais encore que le temple de la grande déesse Diane ne soit tenu pour rien, et même que la majesté de celle que révèrent l’Asie et le monde entier ne soit réduite à néant. »
28 And when they heard these sayings, they were full of wrath, and cried out, saying, Great is Diana of the Ephesians.
A ces mots, transportés de colère, ils se mirent à crier: « Grande est la Diane des Ephésiens! »
29 And the whole city was filled with confusion: and having caught Gaius and Aristarchus, men of Macedonia, Paul’s companions in travel, they rushed with one accord into the theatre.
Bientôt la ville fut remplie de confusion. Ils se précipitèrent tous ensemble au théâtre, entraînant Gaïus et Aristarque, Macédoniens qui avaient accompagné Paul dans son voyage.
30 And when Paul would have entered in to the people, the disciples permitted him not.
Paul voulait pénétrer au milieu de la foule, mais les disciples l’en empêchèrent.
31 And certain of the chief of Asia, who were his friends, sent to him, beseeching him that he would not venture himself into the theatre.
Quelques-uns même des Asiarques, qui étaient de ses amis, envoyèrent vers lui, pour l’engager à ne pas se présenter au théâtre.
32 Some therefore cried one thing, and some another: for the assembly was confused; and the greater part knew not why they had come together.
Mille cris divers s’y faisaient entendre; car le désordre régnait dans l’assemblée, et la plupart ne savaient pourquoi ils s’étaient réunis.
33 And they drew Alexander out of the multitude, the Jews putting him forward. And Alexander beckoned with the hand, and would have made his defence to the people.
Alors on dégagea de la foule Alexandre que les Juifs poussaient en avant. Il fit signe de la main qu’il voulait parler au peuple.
34 But when they knew that he was a Jew, all with one voice about the space of two hours cried out, Great is Diana of the Ephesians.
Mais, lorsqu’ils eurent reconnu qu’il était juif, ils crièrent tous d’une seule voix durant près de deux heures: « Grande est la Diane des Ephésiens! »
35 And when the townclerk had quieted the people, he said, Ye men of Ephesus, what man is there that knoweth not that the city of the Ephesians is a worshipper of the great goddess Diana, and of the image which fell down from Jupiter?
Le grammate ayant enfin apaisé la foule, dit: « Ephésiens, quel est l’homme qui ne sache que la ville d’Ephèse est vouée au culte de la grande Diane et de sa statue tombée du ciel?
36 Seeing then that these things cannot be denied, ye ought to be quiet, and to do nothing rashly.
Cela étant incontestable, vous devez être calme et ne rien faire inconsidérément;
37 For ye have brought here these men, who are neither robbers of temples, nor yet blasphemers of your goddess.
car ces hommes que vous avez amenés ici ne sont ni des sacrilèges, ni des blasphémateurs de votre déesse.
38 Therefore if Demetrius, and the craftsmen who are with him, have a matter against any man, the law is open, and there are deputies: let them accuse one another.
Que si Démétrius et ceux de son industrie ont à se plaindre de quelqu’un, il y a des jours d’audience et des proconsuls: que chacun fasse valoir ses griefs.
39 But if ye enquire any thing concerning other matters, it shall be determined in a lawful assembly.
Si vous avez quelque autre affaire à régler, on en décidera dans l’assemblée légale.
40 For we are in danger to be called in question for this day’s uproar, there being no cause by which we may give an account of this riotous gathering.
Nous risquons, en effet, d’être accusés de sédition pour ce qui s’est passé aujourd’hui, car il n’existe aucun motif qui nous permette de justifier cet attroupement. »
41 And when he had thus spoken, he dismissed the assembly.
Ayant parlé ainsi, il congédia l’assemblée.
