2 Samuel 18
1 And David numbered the people that were with him, and set over them captains of thousands and captains of hundreds.
David, pues, contó el pueblo que tenía consigo, y puso sobre ellos tribunos y centuriones.
2 And David sent forth a third part of the people under the hand of Joab, and a third part under the hand of Abishai the son of Zeruiah, Joab’s brother, and a third part under the hand of Ittai the Gittite. And the king said to the people, I will surely go forth with you myself also.
Y puso la tercera parte del pueblo debajo de la mano de Joab, y otra tercera debajo de la mano de Abisaí, hijo de Sarvia, hermano de Joab, y la otra tercera parte debajo de la mano de Etai Geteo. Y dijo el rey al pueblo: Yo también saldré con vosotros.
3 But the people answered, Thou shalt not go forth: for if we flee away, they will not care for us; neither if half of us die, will they care for us: but now thou art worth ten thousand of us: therefore now it is better that thou shouldest help us out of the city.
Mas el pueblo dijo: No saldrás, porque si nosotros huyéremos, no harán caso de nosotros: y aunque la mitad de nosotros muera, no harán caso de nosotros: mas tú ahora vales tanto como diez mil de nosotros, por tanto mejor será que tú nos des ayuda desde la ciudad.
4 And the king said to them, What seemeth to you best I will do. And the king stood by the gate side, and all the people came out by hundreds and by thousands.
Entonces el rey les dijo: Yo haré lo que a vosotros pareciere bien. Y el rey se puso a la entrada de la puerta, mientras salía todo el pueblo de ciento en ciento, y de mil en mil.
5 And the king commanded Joab and Abishai and Ittai, saying, Deal gently for my sake with the young man, even with Absalom. And all the people heard when the king gave all the captains charge concerning Absalom.
Y el rey mandó a Joab, y a Abisaí, y a Etai, diciendo: Tratád benignamente por amor de mí al mozo Absalom. Y todo el pueblo oyó cuando el rey mandó acerca de Absalom a todos los capitanes.
6 So the people went out into the field against Israel: and the battle was in the forest of Ephraim;
Y el pueblo salió al campo contra Israel, y la batalla se dio en el bosque de Efraím.
7 Where the people of Israel were slain before the servants of David, and there was there a great slaughter that day of twenty thousand men.
Y el pueblo de Israel cayó allí delante de los siervos de David, y fue hecha allí gran matanza en aquel día de veinte mil hombres.
8 For the battle was there scattered over the face of all the country: and the forest devoured more people that day than the sword devoured.
Y derramándose allí el ejército por la haz de toda la tierra, fueron más los que consumió el bosque de los del pueblo, que los que consumió la espada aquel día.
9 And Absalom met the servants of David. And Absalom rode upon a mule, and the mule went under the thick boughs of a great oak, and his head caught fast in the oak, and he was left hanging between the heaven and the earth; and the mule that was under him went away.
Y Absalom se encontró con los siervos de David, y Absalom iba sobre un mulo, y el mulo se entró debajo de un espeso y grande alcornoque, y asiósele la cabeza al alcornoque, y quedó entre el cielo y la tierra, y el mulo que estaba debajo de él, pasó adelante.
10 And a certain man saw it, and told Joab, and said, Behold, I saw Absalom hanging in an oak.
Y viéndole uno, avisó a Joab, diciendo: He aquí que yo ví a Absalom colgado de un alcornoque.
11 And Joab said to the man that told him, And, behold, thou sawest him, and why didst thou not smite him there to the ground? and I would have given thee ten shekels of silver, and a belt.
Y Joab respondió al hombre que le daba la nueva: ¿Y viéndole tú? ¿por qué no le heriste luego allí a tierra? y sobre mí, que yo te diera diez siclos de plata, y un talabarte.
12 And the man said to Joab, Though I should receive a thousand shekels of silver in my hand, yet would I not put forth my hand against the king’s son: for in our hearing the king charged thee and Abishai and Ittai, saying, Beware that none touch the young man Absalom.
Y el hombre dijo a Joab: Aunque yo me pesara en mis manos mil siclos de plata, no extendiera mi mano en el hijo del rey: porque nosotros lo oímos cuando el rey te mandó a ti, y a Abisaí, y a Etai, diciendo: Mirád que ninguno toque en el mozo Absalom:
13 Otherwise I should have wrought falsehood against my own life: for there is no matter hid from the king, and thou thyself wouldest have set thyself against me.
O yo hubiera hecho traición contra mi alma; pues que al rey nada se le esconde, y tú mismo estarías contra mí.
14 Then said Joab, I may not tarry thus with thee. And he took three spears in his hand, and thrust them through the heart of Absalom, while he was yet alive in the midst of the oak.
Y Joab respondió: No es razón, que yo te ruegue. Y tomando tres dardos en su mano, hincólos en el corazón de Absalom, que aun estaba vivo en medio del alcornoque.
15 And ten young men that bore Joab’s armour surrounded and smote Absalom, and slew him.
Y cercándole diez mancebos escuderos de Joab, hirieron a Absalom, y matáronle.
16 And Joab blew the trumpet, and the people returned from pursuing Israel: for Joab restrained the people.
Entonces Joab tocó la corneta, y el pueblo se volvió de seguir a Israel, porque Joab detuvo al pueblo.
17 And they took Absalom, and cast him into a great pit in the forest, and laid a very great heap of stones upon him: and all Israel fled every one to his tent.
Y tomando a Absalom, echáronle en un gran foso en el bosque, y levantaron sobre él un muy gran majano de piedras, y todo Israel huyó cada uno a sus estancias.
18 Now Absalom in his lifetime had taken and built for himself a pillar, which is in the king’s dale: for he said, I have no son to keep my name in remembrance: and he called the pillar after his own name: and it is called to this day, Absalom’s place.
Y Absalom había tomado, y se había levantado una columna en su vida, la cual está en el valle del rey, porque había dicho entre sí: Yo no tengo hijo que conserve la memoria de mi nombre: y llamó a aquella columna por su nombre, y así se llamó, lugar de Absalom, hasta hoy.
19 Then said Ahimaaz the son of Zadok, Let me now run, and inform the king, how the LORD hath avenged himself of his enemies.
Entonces Aquimaas, hijo de Sadoc, dijo: Yo correré ahora y daré las nuevas al rey, como Jehová ha defendido su causa de la mano de sus enemigos.
20 And Joab said to him, Thou shalt not bear tidings this day, but thou shalt bear tidings another day: but this day thou shalt bear no tidings, because the king’s son is dead.
Y respondióle Joab: Hoy no llevarás las nuevas, otro día las llevarás: no darás hoy la nueva, porque el hijo del rey es muerto.
21 Then said Joab to Cushi, Go tell the king what thou hast seen. And Cushi bowed himself to Joab, and ran.
Y Joab dijo a Cusi: Vé tú, y di al rey lo que has visto. Y Cusi hizo reverencia a Joab, y corrió.
22 Then said Ahimaaz the son of Zadok yet again to Joab, But however, let me also, I pray thee, run after Cushi. And Joab said, Why wilt thou run, my son, seeing that thou hast no tidings ready?
Y Aquimaas, hijo de Sadoc, tornó a decir a Joab: Sea lo que fuere, yo correré ahora tras Cusi. Y Joab dijo: Hijo mío, ¿para qué has tú de correr, que no hallarás premio por las nuevas?
23 But however, said he, let me run. And he said to him, Run. Then Ahimaaz ran by the way of the plain, and outran Cushi.
Y él respondió: Sea lo que fuere, yo correré; y Joab le dijo: Corre. Y Aquimaas corrió por el camino de la campaña, y pasó delante de Cusi.
24 And David sat between the two gates: and the watchman went up to the roof over the gate to the wall, and lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold a man running alone.
Y David estaba asentado entre las dos puertas, y el atalaya había ido sobre la techumbre de la puerta en el muro, y alzando sus ojos, miró y vio a uno que corría solo.
25 And the watchman called, and told the king. And the king said, If he is alone, there is tidings in his mouth. And he came apace, and drew near.
Y el atalaya dio voces, e hízolo saber al rey. Y el rey dijo: Si es solo, buenas nuevas trae. Y él venía acercándose.
26 And the watchman saw another man running: and the watchman called to the porter, and said, Behold another man running alone. And the king said, He also bringeth tidings.
El atalaya vio otro que corría: y dio voces el atalaya al portero, diciendo: Hé un hombre que corre solo. Y el rey dijo: Este también es mensajero.
27 And the watchman said, I think the running of the foremost is like the running of Ahimaaz the son of Zadok. And the king said, He is a good man, and cometh with good news.
Y el atalaya volvió a decir: Paréceme el correr del primero, como el correr de Aquimaas, hijo de Sadoc. Y el rey respondió: Ese hombre es de bien, y viene con buena nueva.
28 And Ahimaaz called, and said to the king, All is well. And he fell down to the earth upon his face before the king, and said, Blessed be the LORD thy God, who hath delivered up the men that raised their hand against my lord the king.
Entonces Aquimaas dijo a alta voz al rey: Paz. E inclinóse a tierra delante del rey, y dijo: Bendito sea Jehová Dios tuyo, que ha entregado los hombres, que habían levantado sus manos contra mi señor el rey.
29 And the king said, Is the young man Absalom safe? And Ahimaaz answered, When Joab sent the king’s servant, and me thy servant, I saw a great tumult, but I knew not what it was.
Y el rey dijo: ¿El mozo Absalom, tiene paz? Y Aquimaas respondió: Yo ví un grande alboroto, cuando Joab envió al siervo del rey, y a mí tu siervo, mas no sé que era.
30 And the king said to him, Turn aside, and stand here. And he turned aside, and stood still.
Y el rey dijo: Pasa, y pónte allí. Y él pasó, y paróse.
31 And, behold, Cushi came; and Cushi said, Tidings, my lord the king: for the LORD hath avenged thee this day of all them that rose up against thee.
Y luego vino Cusi, y dijo: Reciba nueva mi señor el rey, que hoy Jehová ha defendido tu causa de la mano de todos los que se habían levantado contra ti.
32 And the king said to Cushi, Is the young man Absalom safe? And Cushi answered, May the enemies of my lord the king, and all that rise against thee to do thee harm, be as that young man is.
El rey entonces dijo a Cusi: ¿El mozo Absalom tiene paz? Y Cusi respondió: Como aquel mozo sean los enemigos de mi señor el rey, y todos los que se levantan contra ti para mal.
33 And the king was much moved, and went up to the chamber over the gate, and wept: and as he went, thus he said, O my son Absalom, my son, my son Absalom! O that I had died for thee, O Absalom, my son, my son!
Entonces el rey se turbó, y subióse a la sala de la puerta, y lloró, y yendo decía así: ¡Hijo mío, Absalom! ¡hijo mío, hijo mío, Absalom! ¡quién me diera, que yo muriera en lugar de ti, Absalom, hijo mío, hijo mío!
