2 Chronicles 24
1 Joash was seven years old when he began to reign, and he reigned forty years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name also was Zibiah of Beersheba.
Joas n’avait que sept ans quand il commença à régner, et il régna quarante ans à Jérusalem. Sa mère s’appelait Sébia, et elle était de Bersabée.
2 And Joash did that which was right in the sight of the LORD all the days of Jehoiada the priest.
Et il fit ce qui était bon devant le Seigneur, tant que vécut le pontife Joïada.
3 And Jehoiada took for him two wives; and he begat sons and daughters.
Joïada lui fit épouser deux femmes, dont il eut des fils et des filles.
4 And it came to pass after this, that Joash was minded to repair the house of the LORD.
Après cela il plut à Joas de réparer la maison du Seigneur.
5 And he gathered the priests and the Levites, and said to them, Go out to the cities of Judah, and gather from all Israel money to repair the house of your God from year to year, and see that ye hasten the matter. But the Levites hastened it not.
Et il assembla les prêtres et les Lévites, et il leur dit: Allez par les villes de Juda, et recueillez de tout Israël de l’argent, chaque année, pour les réparations du temple, et faites cela promptement. Mais les Lévites agirent avec négligence.
6 And the king called for Jehoiada the chief, and said to him, Why hast thou not required of the Levites to bring in out of Judah and out of Jerusalem the collection, according to the commandment of Moses the servant of the LORD, and of the congregation of Israel, for the tabernacle of witness?
Le roi appela donc le pontife Joïada, et lui dit: Pourquoi n’as-tu pas eu soin d’obliger les Lévites d’apporter de Juda et de Jérusalem l’argent qui a été fixé par Moïse, serviteur de Dieu, afin que tout le peuple d’Israël l’apporte dans le tabernacle de l’alliance?
7 For the sons of Athaliah, that wicked woman, had broken up the house of God; and also all the dedicated things of the house of the LORD they bestowed upon Baalim.
Car la très impie Athalie et ses fils ont ruiné la maison de Dieu, et ont orné le temple des Baalim avec tout ce qui avait été consacré au temple du Seigneur.
8 And at the king’s commandment they made a chest, and set it without at the gate of the house of the LORD.
Et le roi ordonna de faire un tronc, que l’on plaça près de la porte de la maison du Seigneur, en dehors.
9 And they made a proclamation through Judah and Jerusalem, to bring in to the LORD the collection that Moses the servant of God laid upon Israel in the wilderness.
Puis on fit publier, dans Juda et à Jérusalem, que chacun vînt apporter au Seigneur l’argent que Moïse, son serviteur, avait imposé à tout Israël dans le désert.
10 And all the princes and all the people rejoiced, and brought in, and cast into the chest, until they had finished.
Tous les chefs et le peuple entier se réjouirent. Ils vinrent et mirent dans le tronc du Seigneur, et ils y jetèrent tant, qu’il fut rempli.
11 Now it came to pass, that at the time the chest was brought to the king’s office by the hand of the Levites, and when they saw that there was much money, the king’s scribe and the high priest’s officer came and emptied the chest, and took it, and carried it to its place again. Thus they did day by day, and assembled money in abundance.
Et lorsqu’il était temps de faire porter le tronc devant le roi par les mains des Lévites, parce qu’ils voyaient qu’il y avait beaucoup d’argent, le secrétaire du roi venait avec celui que le grand prêtre avait choisi, et ils vidaient l’argent de ce tronc, puis ils reportaient le tronc à sa place; ce qu’ils faisaient tous les jours. Et ils amassèrent une somme immense d’argent,
12 And the king and Jehoiada gave it to such as did the work of the service of the house of the LORD, and hired masons and carpenters to repair the house of the LORD, and also such as wrought iron and brass to mend the house of the LORD.
que le roi et le pontife donnèrent aux officiers qui conduisaient les travaux de la maison du Seigneur; et ils en payaient les tailleurs de pierres et tous les ouvriers qui travaillaient aux réparations de la maison du Seigneur, et aussi les ouvriers sur fer et sur cuivre, afin qu’ils rétablissent ce qui menaçait ruine.
13 So the workmen wrought, and the work was perfected by them, and they set the house of God in order, and strengthened it.
Ces ouvriers travaillèrent avec industrie, et ils réparèrent toutes les brèches des murs. Ils rétablirent la maison du Seigneur dans son premier état, et l’affermirent solidement.
14 And when they had finished it, they brought the rest of the money before the king and Jehoiada, of which were made vessels for the house of the LORD, even vessels to minister, and to offer with, and spoons, and vessels of gold and silver. And they offered burnt offerings in the house of the LORD continually all the days of Jehoiada.
Après avoir terminé tous ces ouvrages, ils portèrent au roi et au pontife Joïada l’argent qui restait, et l’on en fit des vases pour le ministère du temple et pour les holocaustes, des coupes et d’autres vases d’or et d’argent; et l’on offrit continuellement des holocaustes dans le temple du Seigneur, durant toute la vie de Joïada.
15 But Jehoiada grew old, and was full of days when he died; an hundred and thirty years old was he when he died.
Or Joïada devint vieux et plein de jours, et il mourut âgé de cent trente ans.
16 And they buried him in the city of David among the kings, because he had done good in Israel, both toward God, and toward his house.
On l’ensevelit avec les rois dans la ville de David, parce qu’il avait fait du bien à Israël et à sa maison.
17 Now after the death of Jehoiada came the princes of Judah, and made obeisance to the king. Then the king hearkened to them.
Après que Joïada fut mort, les princes de Juda vinrent et se prosternèrent devant le roi, qui, gagné par leurs hommages, accéda à leurs désirs.
18 And they left the house of the LORD God of their fathers, and served groves and idols: and wrath came upon Judah and Jerusalem for this their trespass.
Et ils abandonnèrent le temple du Seigneur, Dieu de leurs pères, et s’attachèrent au culte des idoles et des bois sacrés. Et ce péché attira la colère du Seigneur sur Juda et sur Jérusalem.
19 Yet he sent prophets to them, to bring them again to the LORD; and they testified against them: but they would not give ear.
Il leur envoyait des prophètes pour les ramener au Seigneur; mais ils ne voulaient pas les écouter, malgré leurs protestations.
20 And the Spirit of God came upon Zechariah the son of Jehoiada the priest, who stood above the people, and said to them, Thus saith God, Why transgress ye the commandments of the LORD, that ye cannot prosper? because ye have forsaken the LORD, he hath also forsaken you.
L’Esprit de Dieu remplit donc le prêtre Zacharie, fils de Joïada, et il se tint debout devant le peuple, et leur dit: Voici ce que dit le Seigneur Dieu: Pourquoi violez-vous les préceptes du Seigneur? Cela ne vous sera pas avantageux. Et pourquoi avez-vous abandonné le Seigneur, pour qu’il vous abandonnât aussi?
21 And they conspired against him, and stoned him with stones at the commandment of the king in the court of the house of the LORD.
Et ils s’attroupèrent contre lui, et le lapidèrent dans le vestibule du temple, d’après l’ordre du roi.
22 Thus Joash the king remembered not the kindness which Jehoiada his father had done to him, but slew his son. And when he died, he said, The LORD look upon it, and require it.
Ainsi Joas ne se souvint pas de la bienveillance que Joïada, père de Zacharie, lui avait témoignée; mais il tua son fils. Celui-ci dit en mourant: Que le Seigneur voie, et qu’il venge!
23 And it came to pass at the end of the year, that the army of Syria came up against him: and they came to Judah and Jerusalem, and destroyed all the princes of the people from among the people, and sent all the spoil of them to the king of Damascus.
Quand l’année fut révolue, l’armée de Syrie vint contre Joas; elle entra dans Juda et dans Jérusalem, et mit à mort tous les princes du peuple, et elle envoya au roi, à Damas, tout le butin qu’elle fit.
24 For the army of the Syrians came with a small company of men, and the LORD delivered a very great host into their hand, because they had forsaken the LORD God of their fathers. So they executed judgment against Joash.
Et quoique ces Syriens fussent venus en très petit nombre, Dieu livra entre leurs mains une multitude infinie, parce qu’ils avaient abandonné le Seigneur, Dieu de leurs pères. Et ils traitèrent Joas lui-même avec la dernière ignominie.
25 And when they had departed from him, (for they left him in great diseases, ) his own servants conspired against him for the blood of the sons of Jehoiada the priest, and slew him on his bed, and he died: and they buried him in the city of David, but they buried him not in the sepulchres of the kings.
En se retirant, ils le laissèrent dans d’extrêmes langueurs. Alors ses serviteurs s’élevèrent contre lui, pour venger le sang du fils du grand prêtre Joïada, et ils le tuèrent dans son lit. Il fut enseveli dans la ville de David, mais non dans le tombeau des rois.
26 And these are they that conspired against him; Zabad the son of Shimeath an Ammonitess, and Jehozabad the son of Shimrith a Moabitess.
Ceux qui avaient conspiré contre lui étaient Zabad, fils de Semmaath l’Ammonite, et Josabad, fils de Sémarith le Moabite.
27 Now concerning his sons, and the greatness of the burdens laid upon him, and the repairing of the house of God, behold, they are written in the story of the book of the kings. And Amaziah his son reigned in his stead.
Ce qui regarde ses fils, la somme d’argent qu’on avait amassée sous lui, et la réparation de la maison de Dieu, est écrit avec plus de soin dans le livre des Rois; et Amasias son fils régna à sa place.
