1 Samuel 25
1 And Samuel died; and all the Israelites were gathered together, and lamented him, and buried him in his house at Ramah. And David arose, and went down to the wilderness of Paran.
Cependant Samuel mourut et tout Israël s'assembla; on le pleura, et on l'enterra dans sa demeure, à Rama. Alors David se leva et descendit au désert de Pharan.
2 And there was a man in Maon, whose possessions were in Carmel; and the man was very great, and he had three thousand sheep, and a thousand goats: and he was shearing his sheep in Carmel.
Il y avait à Maon un homme ayant ses biens à Carmel; c'était un homme très riche, il avait trois mille brebis et mille chèvres, et il se trouvait à Carmel pour la tonte de ses brebis.
3 Now the name of the man was Nabal; and the name of his wife Abigail: and she was a woman of good understanding, and of a beautiful countenance: but the man was churlish and evil in his doings; and he was of the house of Caleb.
Le nom de cet homme était Nabal, et le nom de sa femme Abigaïl. La femme était pleine de sens, et de belle figure; mais l'homme était dur et méchant en actes; il était de la race de Caleb.
4 And David heard in the wilderness that Nabal was shearing his sheep.
David apprit au désert que Nabal tondait ses brebis.
5 And David sent ten young men, and David said to the young men, Go up to Carmel, and go to Nabal, and greet him in my name:
David envoya dix jeunes gens, et David dit aux jeunes gens: « Montez à Carmel et allez trouver Nabal; vous le saluerez en mon nom,
6 And thus shall ye say to him that liveth in prosperity, Peace be both to thee, and peace be to thy house, and peace be to all that thou hast.
et vous lui parlerez ainsi: Pour la vie! Que la paix soit avec toi, que la paix soit avec ta maison et que la paix soit avec tout ce qui t'appartient.
7 And now I have heard that thou hast shearers: now thy shepherds who were with us, we hurt them not, neither was there any thing missing to them, all the while they were in Carmel.
Et maintenant, j'ai appris que tu as les tondeurs. Or, tes bergers ont été avec nous; nous ne leur avons causé aucune peine, et rien du troupeau ne leur a été enlevé pendant tout le temps qu'ils ont été à Carmel.
8 Ask thy young men, and they will show thee. Therefore let the young men find favour in thy eyes: for we come in a good day: give, I pray thee, whatever cometh to thy hand to thy servants, and to thy son David.
Interroge tes serviteurs, et ils te le diront. Que les jeunes gens trouvent donc grâce à tes yeux, puisque nous venons dans un jour de joie. Donne, je te prie, à tes serviteurs et à ton fils David ce que ta main pourra trouver. »
9 And when David’s young men came, they spoke to Nabal in the name of David, according to all these words, and ceased.
Lorsque les jeunes gens de David furent arrivés, ils répétèrent toutes ces paroles à Nabal au nom de David, et ils se reposèrent.
10 And Nabal answered David’s servants, and said, Who is David? and who is the son of Jesse? there are many servants in these days that break away every man from his master.
Nabal répondit aux serviteurs de David et dit: « Qui est David, et qui est le fils d'Isaï? Ils sont nombreux aujourd'hui les serviteurs qui s'échappent de chez leurs maîtres.
11 Shall I then take my bread, and my water, and my flesh that I have killed for my shearers, and give it to men, whom I know not from where they are?
Et je prendrais mon pain et mon eau, et mon bétail que j'ai tué pour mes tondeurs, et je les donnerais à des gens qui viennent je ne sais d'où? »
12 So David’s young men turned their way, and went again, and came and told him all these sayings.
Les jeunes gens de David, rebroussant chemin, s'en retournèrent et, lorsqu'ils furent arrivés, ils lui redirent toutes ces paroles.
13 And David said to his men, Gird ye on every man his sword. And they girded on every man his sword; and David also girded on his sword: and there went up after David about four hundred men; and two hundred abode by the baggage.
Alors David dit à ses hommes: « Que chacun de vous ceigne son épée! » Et ils ceignirent chacun leur épée, et David, lui aussi, ceignit son épée; environ quatre cents hommes montèrent à la suite de David; il en resta deux cents près des bagages.
14 But one of the young men told Abigail, Nabal’s wife, saying, Behold, David sent messengers from the wilderness to greet our master; and he railed at them.
Un des serviteurs de Nabal vint apporter la nouvelle à Abigaïl en disant: « Voici que David a envoyé du désert des messagers pour saluer notre maître, qui s'est jeté sur eux.
15 But the men were very good to us, and we were not hurt, neither missed we any thing, as long as we were conversant with them, when we were in the fields:
Et pourtant ces gens ont été bons pour nous; ils ne nous ont causé aucune peine, et rien ne nous a été enlevé tout le temps que nous avons cheminé avec eux, lorsque nous étions dans la campagne.
16 They were a wall to us both by night and day, all the while we were with them keeping the sheep.
Ils nous ont servi de rempart, aussi bien la nuit que le jour, tout le temps que nous avons été avec eux, paissant les troupeaux.
17 Now therefore know and consider what thou wilt do; for evil is determined against our master, and against all his household: for he is such a worthless man, that a man cannot speak to him.
Reconnais maintenant et vois ce que tu as à faire; car le mal est résolu contre notre maître et contre toute sa maison; pour lui, c'est un fils de Bélial, et on ne peut lui parler. »
18 Then Abigail made haste, and took two hundred loaves, and two bottles of wine, and five sheep ready dressed, and five measures of roasted grain, and an hundred clusters of raisins, and two hundred cakes of figs, and laid them on donkeys.
Aussitôt Abigaïl prit deux cents pains, deux outres de vin, cinq moutons apprêtés, cinq mesures de grain rôti, cent masses de raisin sec et deux cents de figues sèches et, les ayant mis sur des ânes,
19 And she said to her servants, Go on before me; behold, I come after you. But she told not her husband Nabal.
elle dit à ses jeunes gens: « Passez devant moi, je vous suis. » Mais elle ne dit rien à Nabal, son mari.
20 And it was so, as she rode on the donkey, that she came down by the covert of the hill, and, behold, David and his men came down toward her; and she met them.
Comme elle descendait, montée sur un âne, en un endroit couvert de la montagne, voici que David et ses hommes descendaient en face d'elle, et elle les rencontra. —
21 Now David had said, Surely in vain have I kept all that this fellow hath in the wilderness, so that nothing was missed of all that pertained to him: and he hath repaid me evil for good.
David disait: « C'est bien en vain que j'ai surveillé tout ce que cet homme a dans le désert, et que rien n'a été enlevé de tout ce qu'il possède; il me rend le mal pour le bien!
22 So and more also do God to the enemies of David, if I leave of all that pertain to him by the morning light any male person.
Que Dieu traite dans toute sa rigueur les ennemis de David! De tout ce qui appartient à Nabal, je ne laisserai rien subsister jusqu'au lever du jour, pas même celui qui urine contre le mur. »
23 And when Abigail saw David, she hasted, and got off the donkey, and fell before David on her face, and bowed herself to the ground,
Dès qu'Abigaïl aperçut David, elle s'empressa de descendre de l'âne et, tombant sur sa face devant David, elle se prosterna contre terre.
24 And fell at his feet, and said, Upon me, my lord, upon me let this iniquity be: and let thy handmaid, I pray thee, speak in thy hearing, and hear the words of thy handmaid.
Puis elle se jeta à ses pieds, en disant: « Que sur moi, mon seigneur, sur moi soit la faute! Permets à ta servante de parler à tes oreilles, et écoute les paroles de ta servante!
25 Let not my lord, I pray thee, regard this worthless man, even Nabal: for as his name is, so is he; Nabal is his name, and folly is with him: but I thy handmaid saw not the young men of my lord, whom thou didst send.
Que mon seigneur ne prenne pas garde à cet homme de Bélial, à Nabal, car il est ce que son nom indique; son nom est Le Fou, et il y a chez lui de la folie. Mais moi, ta servante, je n'ai pas vu les gens de mon seigneur, que tu as envoyés.
26 Now therefore, my lord, as the LORD liveth, and as thy soul liveth, seeing the LORD hath withheld thee from coming to shed blood, and from avenging thyself with thy own hand, now let thy enemies, and they that seek evil to my lord, be as Nabal.
Maintenant, mon seigneur, aussi vrai que Yahweh est vivant et que ton âme est vivante, Yahweh t'a préservé de répandre le sang et de te venger de ta main. Et maintenant, que tes ennemis et ceux qui veulent du mal à mon seigneur soient comme Nabal!
27 And now this blessing which thy handmaid hath brought to my lord, let it even be given to the young men that follow my lord.
Accepte donc ce présent que ta servante apporte à mon seigneur, et qu'il soit distribué aux jeunes gens qui marchent à la suite de mon seigneur.
28 I pray thee, forgive the trespass of thy handmaid: for the LORD will certainly make my lord a sure house; because my lord fighteth the battles of the LORD, and evil hath not been found in thee all thy days.
Pardonne, je te prie, la faute de ta servante, car Yahweh fera certainement à mon seigneur une maison stable; car mon seigneur soutient les guerres de Yahweh, et on ne trouvera pas de mal en toi tout le temps de ta vie.
29 Yet a man hath risen to pursue thee, and to seek thy soul: but the soul of my lord shall be bound in the bundle of life with the LORD thy God; and the souls of thy enemies, them shall he sling out, as from the middle of a sling.
S'il s'élève quelqu'un pour te poursuivre et en vouloir à ta vie, la vie de mon seigneur sera liée dans le faisceau des vivants auprès de Yahweh, ton Dieu, et la vie de tes ennemis, il la lancera au loin du creux de la fronde.
30 And it shall come to pass, when the LORD shall have done to my lord according to all the good that he hath spoken concerning thee, and shall have appointed thee ruler over Israel;
Lorsque Yahweh aura fait à mon seigneur selon tout le bien qu'il a dit à ton sujet et qu'il t'aura établi chef sur Israël,
31 That this shall be no grief to thee, nor offence of heart to my lord, either that thou hast shed blood without cause, or that my lord hath avenged himself: but when the LORD shall have dealt well with my lord, then remember thy handmaid.
ce ne sera pas pour toi un sujet de remords ni pour mon seigneur une souffrance de cœur d'avoir répandu le sang sans motif et s'être vengé lui-même. Et lorsque Yahweh aura fait du bien à mon seigneur, souviens-toi de ta servante. »
32 And David said to Abigail, Blessed be the LORD God of Israel, who sent thee this day to meet me:
David dit à Abigaïl: « Béni soit Yahweh, le Dieu d'Israël, qui t'a envoyée, aujourd'hui à ma rencontre! Béni soit ton grand sens,
33 And blessed be thy advice, and blessed be thou, who hast kept me this day from coming to shed blood, and from avenging myself with my own hand.
et bénie sois-tu, toi qui m'as empêché en ce jour de répandre le sang et de me venger de ma main!
34 For in very deed, as the LORD God of Israel liveth, who hath kept me back from hurting thee, except thou hadst hasted and come to meet me, surely there had not been left to Nabal by the morning light any male person.
Autrement, aussi vrai que Yahweh, le Dieu d'Israël, qui m'a empêché de te faire du mal, est vivant, si tu ne t'étais pas hâtée de venir au-devant de moi, il ne fût rien resté à Nabal d'ici au lever du jour, pas même celui qui urine contre le mur. »
35 So David received from her hand that which she had brought him, and said to her, Return in peace to thy house; see, I have hearkened to thy voice, and have accepted thy person.
David prit de la main d'Abigaïl ce qu'elle lui avait apporté, et lui dit: « Monte en paix dans ta maison; vois, j'ai écouté ta voix et relevé ton visage! »
36 And Abigail came to Nabal; and, behold, he held a feast in his house, like the feast of a king; and Nabal’s heart was merry within him, for he was very drunk: therefore she told him nothing, less or more, until the morning light.
Abigaïl retourna vers Nabal, et voici qu'il faisait dans sa maison un festin comme un festin de roi; et le cœur de Nabal était joyeux, et il était complètement ivre. Elle ne lui apprit ni peu, ni beaucoup, jusqu'au lever du jour.
37 But it came to pass in the morning, when the wine had left Nabal, and his wife had told him these things, that his heart died within him, and he became as a stone.
Mais le matin, quand Nabal fut revenu de son ivresse, sa femme lui raconta ces choses, et son cœur en reçut un coup mortel, et il devint comme une pierre.
38 And it came to pass about ten days after, that the LORD smote Nabal, that he died.
Environ dix jours après, Yahweh frappa Nabal, et il mourut.
39 And when David heard that Nabal was dead, he said, Blessed be the LORD, that hath pleaded the cause of my reproach from the hand of Nabal, and hath kept his servant from evil: for the LORD hath returned the wickedness of Nabal upon his own head. And David sent and talked with Abigail, to take her to himself for a wife.
Lorsque David apprit la mort de Nabal, il dit: « Béni soit Yahweh qui a défendu ma cause et m'a vengé de l'outrage que j'ai reçu de la main de Nabal, et qui a empêché son serviteur de faire le mal! Yahweh a fait retomber la méchanceté de Nabal sur sa tête. » Ensuite David envoya dire à Abigaïl qu'il voulait la prendre pour femme.
40 And when the servants of David had come to Abigail to Carmel, they spoke to her, saying, David hath sent us to thee, to take thee to him for a wife.
Arrivés chez Abigaïl à Carmel, les serviteurs de David lui parlèrent ainsi: « David nous a envoyés vers toi, afin de te prendre pour sa femme. »
41 And she arose, and bowed herself on her face to the earth, and said, Behold, let thy handmaid be a servant to wash the feet of the servants of my lord.
Elle se leva et, s'étant prosternée le visage contre terre, elle dit: « Voici que ta servante est comme une esclave pour laver les pieds des serviteurs de mon seigneur! »
42 And Abigail hasted, and arose, and rode upon a donkey, with five damsels of hers that went after her; and she went after the messengers of David, and became his wife.
Aussitôt Abigaïl se leva et monta sur un âne, et cinq de ses jeunes filles allaient sur ses pas; elle suivit les messagers de David, et elle devint sa femme.
43 David also took Ahinoam of Jezreel; and they were also both of them his wives.
David prit aussi Achinoam de Jezraël, et toutes les deux furent ses femmes.
44 But Saul had given Michal his daughter, David’s wife, to Phalti the son of Laish, who was of Gallim.
Mais Saül avait donné sa fille Michol, femme de David, à Phalti de Gallim, fils de Laïs.
