< Mark 15 >

1 Early in the morning, the chief priests met together with the elders and scribes and the entire Jewish council. Then they bound Jesus and led him away. They handed him over to Pilate.
And immediately, in the morning, the chief priests having made a consultation, with the elders, and scribes, and the whole sanhedrim, having bound Jesus, did lead away, and delivered [him] to Pilate;
2 Pilate asked him, “Are you the King of the Jews?” He answered him, “You say so.”
and Pilate questioned him, 'Art thou the king of the Jews?' and he answering said to him, 'Thou dost say [it].'
3 The chief priests were presenting many charges against Jesus.
And the chief priests were accusing him of many things, [but he answered nothing.]
4 Pilate again asked him, “Do you give no answer? See how many charges they are bringing against you!”
And Pilate again questioned him, saying, 'Thou dost not answer anything! lo, how many things they do testify against thee!'
5 But Jesus no longer answered Pilate, and that amazed him.
and Jesus did no more answer anything, so that Pilate wondered.
6 Now at the time of the feast, Pilate usually released to them one prisoner, a prisoner they requested.
And at every feast he was releasing to them one prisoner, whomsoever they were asking;
7 There with the rebels in prison, among the murderers held for their part in the rebellion, was a man named Barabbas.
and there was [one] named Barabbas, bound with those making insurrection with him, who had in the insurrection committed murder.
8 The crowd came to Pilate and began to ask him to do for them as he had done in the past.
And the multitude having cried out, began to ask for themselves as he was always doing to them,
9 Pilate answered them and said, “Do you want me to release to you the King of the Jews?”
and Pilate answered them, saying, 'Will ye [that] I shall release to you the king of the Jews?'
10 For he knew that it was because of envy that the chief priests had handed Jesus over to him.
for he knew that because of envy the chief priests had delivered him up;
11 But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to cry out that Barabbas should be released instead.
and the chief priests did move the multitude, that he might rather release Barabbas to them.
12 Pilate answered them again and said, “What then should I do with the King of the Jews?”
And Pilate answering, again said to them, 'What, then, will ye [that] I shall do to him whom ye call king of the Jews?'
13 They shouted again, “Crucify him!”
and they again cried out, 'Crucify him.'
14 Pilate said to them, “What wrong has he done?” But they shouted more and more, “Crucify him.”
And Pilate said to them, 'Why — what evil did he?' and they cried out the more vehemently, 'Crucify him;'
15 Pilate wanted to satisfy the crowd, so he released Barabbas to them. He scourged Jesus and then handed him over to be crucified.
and Pilate, wishing to content the multitude, released to them Barabbas, and delivered up Jesus — having scourged [him] — that he might be crucified.
16 The soldiers led him inside the courtyard (which is the government headquarters), and they called together the whole cohort of soldiers.
And the soldiers led him away into the hall, which is Praetorium, and call together the whole band,
17 They put a purple robe on Jesus, and they twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on him.
and clothe him with purple, and having plaited a crown of thorns, they put [it] on him,
18 They began to salute him and say, “Hail, King of the Jews!”
and began to salute him, 'Hail, King of the Jews.'
19 They struck his head with a reed staff and they spat on him. They bent their knees before him to pretend to worship him.
And they were smiting him on the head with a reed, and were spitting on him, and having bent the knee, were bowing to him,
20 When they had mocked him, they took off of him the purple robe and put his own garments on him, and then led him out to crucify him.
and when they [had] mocked him, they took the purple from off him, and clothed him in his own garments, and they led him forth, that they may crucify him.
21 A certain man, Simon of Cyrene, was coming in from the country (he was the father of Alexander and Rufus), and they forced him to carry his cross.
And they impress a certain one passing by — Simon, a Cyrenian, coming from the field, the father of Alexander and Rufus — that he may bear his cross,
22 The soldiers brought Jesus to the place called Golgotha (which interpreted means, “Place of a Skull”).
and they bring him to the place Golgotha, which is, being interpreted, 'Place of a skull;'
23 They offered him wine mixed with myrrh, but he did not drink it.
and they were giving him to drink wine mingled with myrrh, and he did not receive.
24 They crucified him and divided up his garments by casting lots to determine what piece each soldier would take.
And having crucified him, they were dividing his garments, casting a lot upon them, what each may take;
25 It was the third hour when they crucified him.
and it was the third hour, and they crucified him;
26 On a sign they wrote the charge against him, “The king of the Jews.”
and the inscription of his accusation was written above — 'The King of the Jews.'
27 With him they crucified two robbers, one on the right of him and one on his left.
And with him they crucify two robbers, one on the right hand, and one on his left,
and the Writing was fulfilled that is saying, 'And with lawless ones he was numbered.'
29 Those who passed by insulted him, shaking their heads and saying, “Aha! You who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days,
And those passing by were speaking evil of him, shaking their heads, and saying, 'Ah, the thrower down of the sanctuary, and in three days the builder!
30 save yourself and come down from the cross!”
save thyself, and come down from the cross!'
31 In the same way the chief priests were mocking him with each other, along with the scribes, and said, “He saved others, but he cannot save himself.
And in like manner also the chief priests, mocking with one another, with the scribes, said, 'Others he saved; himself he is not able to save.
32 Let the Christ, the King of Israel, come down now from the cross, that we may see and believe,” and those who were crucified with him also taunted him.
The Christ! the king of Israel — let him come down now from the cross, that we may see and believe;' and those crucified with him were reproaching him.
33 At the sixth hour, darkness came over the whole land until the ninth hour.
And the sixth hour having come, darkness came over the whole land till the ninth hour,
34 At the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?” which is interpreted, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”
and at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a great voice, saying, 'Eloi, Eloi, lamma sabachthani?' which is, being interpreted, 'My God, my God, why didst Thou forsake me?'
35 Some of those standing by heard his words and said, “Look, he is calling for Elijah.”
And certain of those standing by, having heard, said, 'Lo, Elijah he doth call;'
36 Someone ran, put sour wine on a sponge, put it on a reed staff, and gave it to him to drink. The man said, “Let us see if Elijah comes to take him down.”
and one having run, and having filled a spunge with vinegar, having put [it] also on a reed, was giving him to drink, saying, 'Let alone, let us see if Elijah doth come to take him down.'
37 Then Jesus cried out with a loud voice and died.
And Jesus having uttered a loud cry, yielded the spirit,
38 The curtain of the temple was split in two from the top to the bottom.
and the veil of the sanctuary was rent in two, from top to bottom,
39 When the centurion who stood and faced Jesus saw that he had died in this way, he said, “Truly this man was the Son of God.”
and the centurion who was standing over-against him, having seen that, having so cried out, he yielded the spirit, said, 'Truly this man was Son of God.'
40 There were also women who looked on from a distance. Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary (the mother of James the younger and of Joses), and Salome.
And there were also women afar off beholding, among whom was also Mary the Magdalene, and Mary of James the less, and of Joses, and Salome,
41 When he was in Galilee they followed him and served him. Many other women also came up with him to Jerusalem.
(who also, when he was in Galilee, were following him, and were ministering to him, ) and many other women who came up with him to Jerusalem.
42 When evening had come, because it was the Day of Preparation, that is, the day before the Sabbath,
And now evening having come, seeing it was the preparation, that is, the fore-sabbath,
43 Joseph of Arimathea came there. He was a respected member of the council, who was waiting for the kingdom of God. He boldly went in to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.
Joseph of Arimathea, an honourable counsellor, who also himself was waiting for the reign of God, came, boldly entered in unto Pilate, and asked the body of Jesus.
44 Pilate was amazed that Jesus was already dead; he called the centurion and asked him if Jesus was dead.
And Pilate wondered if he were already dead, and having called near the centurion, did question him if he were long dead,
45 When Pilate learned from the centurion that Jesus was dead, he gave the body to Joseph.
and having known [it] from the centurion, he granted the body to Joseph.
46 Joseph had bought a linen cloth. He took him down from the cross, wrapped him in the linen cloth, and laid him in a tomb that had been cut out of a rock. Then he rolled a stone against the entrance of the tomb.
And he, having brought fine linen, and having taken him down, wrapped him in the linen, and laid him in a sepulchre that had been hewn out of a rock, and he rolled a stone unto the door of the sepulchre,
47 Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses saw the place where Jesus was buried.
and Mary the Magdalene, and Mary of Joses, were beholding where he is laid.
