Jeremiah 11
1 The word that came to Jeremiah from Yahweh, saying,
La parole adressée à Jérémie par l’Eternel était ainsi conçue:
2 “Listen to the words of this covenant, and declare them to each man in Judah and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem.
"Ecoutez les termes de cette alliance, et vous les redirez aux gens de Juda et aux habitants de Jérusalem.
3 Say to them, 'Yahweh, God of Israel says this: Cursed is anyone who does not listen to the words of this covenant.
Tu leur diras: Ainsi parle l’Eternel, Dieu d’Israël: Maudit soit l’homme qui n’écoutera pas les termes de cette alliance,
4 This is the covenant that I commanded your ancestors to keep the day I brought them out from the land of Egypt, from the furnace for smelting iron. I said, “Listen to my voice and do all of these things just as I have commanded you, for you will be my people and I will be your God.”
que j’ai dictée à vos ancêtres à l’époque où je les ai fait sortir du pays d’Egypte, de ce creuset de fer, en disant: Ecoutez ma voix, conformez-vous à tous les ordres que je vous prescris, alors vous serez mon peuple et je serai votre Dieu;
5 Obey me so that I may confirm the oath that I swore to your ancestors, the oath that I would give them the land flowing with milk and honey, where you live today.'” Then I, Jeremiah, answered and said, “Yes, Yahweh!”
de manière à accomplir le serment que j’ai fait à vos ancêtres de leur donner un pays où coulent le lait et le miel, comme cela s’est réalisé aujourd’hui!" Je répondis par ces mots: "Amen, ô Eternel!"
6 Yahweh said to me, “Proclaim all these things in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem. Say, 'Listen to the words of this covenant and carry them out.
Et l’Eternel me dit: "Publie toutes ces paroles dans les villes de Juda et dans les rues de Jérusalem, savoir: Ecoutez les termes de cette alliance, et mettez-les à exécution;
7 For I have been giving solemn commands to your ancestors from the day I brought them up from the land of Egypt until this present time, persistently warning them and saying, “Listen to my voice.”'
car j’ai dûment averti vos ancêtres dès le jour où je les ai fait monter du pays d’Egypte jusqu’à ce jour, je les ai avertis chaque matin en disant: Ecoutez ma voix!
8 But they did not listen or pay attention. Each person has been walking in the stubbornness of his wicked heart. So I brought all the curses in this covenant that I commanded to come against them. But the people still did not obey.”
Mais ils n’ont pas écouté, ils n’ont pas prêté l’oreille, ils ont suivi chacun les penchants de leur coeur pervers; aussi leur ai-je appliqué toutes les clauses du contrat que je leur avais ordonné de respecter et qu’ils n’ont pas respectées."
9 Next Yahweh said to me, “A conspiracy has been discovered among the men of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem.
Et l’Eternel me dit: "Il s’est formé un complot parmi les gens de Juda et les habitants de Jérusalem.
10 They have turned to the iniquities of their earliest ancestors, who refused to listen to my word, who instead walked after other gods to worship them. The house of Israel and the house of Judah broke my covenant that I established with their ancestors.
Ils sont retournés aux fautes de leurs premiers aïeux, qui avaient refusé d’obéir à mes paroles; eux aussi s’attachent à des dieux étrangers pour les servir: la maison d’Israël et la maison de Juda ont rompu l’alliance que j’avais contractée avec leurs ancêtres."
11 Therefore Yahweh says this, 'See, I am about to bring disaster on them, disaster from which they will not be able to escape. Then they will call out to me, but I will not listen to them.
C’Est pourquoi ainsi parle l’Eternel: "Voici, je fais fondre sur eux des calamités dont ils ne pourront s’échapper; alors ils crieront vers moi et je ne les écouterai point.
12 The cities of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem will go and call out to the gods to which they had given offerings, but they will certainly not be saved by them at the time of their disaster.
Les villes de Juda et les habitants de Jérusalem pourront aller implorer les dieux auxquels ils brûlent de l’encens; mais ceux-ci seront impuissants à les secourir au temps de leur malheur.
13 For you Judah, the number of your gods has increased to equal the number of your cities. You have made the number of shameful altars in Jerusalem, incense altars for Baal, equal to the number of her streets.
Car aussi nombreux que tes villes sont tes dieux, ô Juda; aussi nombreux que les rues de Jérusalem sont les autels élevés par vous à un culte honteux, les autels pour encenser Baal!
14 So you yourself, Jeremiah, must not pray for this people. You must not wail or pray on their behalf. For I will not be listening when they call on me in their disaster.
Quant à toi, ne prie pas en faveur de ce peuple; ne m’invoque ni ne me supplie pour lui, car je n’écouterai pas à l’heure où ils s’adresseront à moi à cause de leurs maux.
15 Why is my beloved one, the one who has had so many wicked intentions, in my house? The meat of your sacrifices cannot help you. You rejoice because of your evil actions.
Que vient faire mon bien-aimé dans ma maison? Il commet des indignités en nombre! A quoi bon cette chair consacrée qui provient de tes mains? Quand tu fais le mal, alors tu triomphes!
16 In the past Yahweh called you a leafy olive tree, beautiful with lovely fruit. But he will light a fire on it that will sound like the roar of a storm; its branches will be broken.
Dieu t’avait dénommé "olivier verdoyant, remarquable par la beauté de son fruit", mais, au bruit d’un terrible fracas, il y a mis le feu et ses rameaux ont volé en éclats.
17 For Yahweh of hosts, the one who planted you, has decreed disaster against you because of the wicked acts that the house of Israel and the house of Judah have committed—they have angered me by giving offerings to Baal.'”
L’Eternel-Cebaot qui t’avait planté a décrété ta ruine, causée par le mal que se sont fait à elles-mêmes la maison d’Israël et la maison de Juda en m’irritant, en encensant Baal.
18 Yahweh made me know these things, so I know them. You, Yahweh, made me see their deeds.
L’Eternel m’a instruit; je sais, depuis que tu m’as rendu témoin de leurs oeuvres,
19 I was like a gentle lamb being led to a butcher. I did not know that they had formed plans against me, “Let us destroy the tree with its fruit! Let us cut him off from the land of the living so his name will be no longer remembered.”
que j’étais, moi, semblable à une brebis docile qu’on mène à l’abattoir; ce que je ne savais pas, c’est que c’était contre moi qu’ils formaient de mauvais desseins: "Allons, détruisons l’arbre dans sa sève, extirpons-le de la terre des vivants, et que son nom ne soit plus mentionné!"
20 Yet Yahweh of hosts is the righteous judge who examines the heart and the mind. I will witness your vengeance against them, for I have presented my case to you.
Mais l’Eternel-Cebaot est un Juge intègre, sondant les reins et le coeur: je verrai la vengeance que tu tireras d’eux, car c’est à toi que je confie ma cause.
21 Therefore Yahweh says this concerning the people of Anathoth who are seeking your life, “They say, 'You must not prophesy in the name of Yahweh, or you will die by our hand.'
C’Est pourquoi ainsi parle l’Eternel-Cebaot au sujet des gens d’Anatot qui en veulent à ta vie et te disent: "Ne prophétise plus au nom de l’Eternel, si tu ne veux pas mourir de notre main!"
22 Therefore Yahweh of hosts says this, 'See, I am about to punish them. Their vigorous young men will die by the sword. Their sons and their daughters will die by famine.
Oui, ainsi parle l’Eternel-Cebaot: "Je vais sévir contre eux: les jeunes gens périront par le glaive, leurs fils et leurs filles périront par la famine.
23 None of them will be left, because I am bringing disaster against the people of Anathoth, a year of their punishment.'”
Il ne leur demeurera aucun reste, quand je ferai arriver la catastrophe sur les gens d’Anatot, l’année de leur châtiment."
