Acts 22
1 “Brothers and fathers, listen to my defense which I will now make to you.”
« Mes frères et mes pères, écoutez ce que j’ai maintenant à vous dire pour ma défense.
2 When the crowd heard Paul speak to them in the Hebrew language, they became quiet. He said,
Dès qu’ils entendirent qu’il leur parlait en langue hébraïque, ils firent encore plus de silence.
3 “I am a Jew, born in Tarsus of Cilicia, but educated in this city at the feet of Gamaliel. I was instructed according to the strict ways of the law of our fathers. I am zealous for God, just as all of you are today.
Et Paul dit: « Je suis Juif, né à Tarse en Cilicie; mais j’ai été élevé dans cette ville et instruit aux pieds de Gamaliel dans la connaissance exacte de la Loi de nos pères, étant plein de zèle pour Dieu, comme vous l’êtes tous aujourd’hui.
4 I persecuted this Way to the death, binding up and delivering them to prison both men and women,
C’est moi qui ai persécuté cette secte jusqu’à la mort, chargeant de chaînes et jetant en prison hommes et femmes:
5 as the high priest and all the elders can bear witness. I received letters from them for the brothers in Damascus, and went there to bring them back in bonds to Jerusalem in order for them to be punished.
le grand-prêtre et tous les Anciens m’en sont témoins. Ayant même reçu d’eux des lettres pour les frères, je partis pour Damas afin d’amener enchaînés à Jérusalem ceux qui se trouvaient là, et de les faire punir.
6 It happened that when I was traveling and nearing Damascus, about noon suddenly a great light from heaven began to shine around me.
Mais comme j’étais en chemin, et déjà près de Damas, tout à coup, vers midi, une vive lumière venant du ciel resplendit autour de moi.
7 I fell to the ground and heard a voice say to me, 'Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?'
Je tombai par terre, et j’entendis une voix qui me disait: Saul, Saul, pourquoi me persécutes-tu?
8 I answered, 'Who are you, Lord?' He said to me, 'I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom you are persecuting.'
Je répondis: Qui êtes-vous, Seigneur? Et il me dit: Je suis Jésus de Nazareth, que tu persécutes.
9 Those who were with me saw the light, but they did not understand the voice of him who spoke to me.
Ceux qui étaient avec moi virent bien la lumière, mais ils n’entendirent pas la voix de celui qui me parlait.
10 I said, 'What should I do, Lord?' The Lord said to me, 'Arise and go into Damascus; there you will be told everything that you must do.'
Alors je dis: Que dois-je faire, Seigneur? Et le Seigneur me répondit: Lève-toi, va à Damas, et là on te dira tout ce que tu dois faire.
11 I could not see because of that light's brightness, and being led by the hands of those who were with me, I came into Damascus.
Et comme par suite de l’éclat de cette lumière je ne voyais plus, ceux qui étaient avec moi me prirent par la main, et j’arrivai à Damas.
12 There I met a man named Ananias, a devout man according to the law and well spoken of by all the Jews who lived there.
Or un homme pieux selon la Loi, nommé Ananie, et de qui tous les Juifs de la ville rendaient un bon témoignage,
13 He came to me, stood by me, and said, 'Brother Saul, receive your sight.' In that very hour I saw him.
vint me voir, et s’étant approché de moi, me dit: Saul, mon frère, recouvre la vue. Et au même instant je le vis.
14 Then he said, 'The God of our fathers has chosen you to know his will, to see the Righteous One, and to hear the voice coming from his own mouth.
Il dit alors: Le Dieu de nos pères t’a prédestiné à connaître sa volonté, à voir le Juste et entendre les paroles de sa bouche.
15 For you shall be a witness for him to all men about what you have seen and heard.
Car tu lui serviras de témoin, devant tous les hommes, des choses que tu as vues et entendues.
16 Now why are you waiting? Arise, be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on his name.'
Et maintenant que tardes-tu? Lève-toi, reçois le baptême et purifie-toi de tes péchés, en invoquant son nom. —
17 After I had returned to Jerusalem, and while I was praying in the temple, it happened that I was given a vision.
De retour à Jérusalem, comme je priais dans le temple, il m’arriva d’être ravi en esprit,
18 I saw him say to me, 'Hurry and leave Jerusalem quickly, because they will not accept your testimony about me.'
et je vis le Seigneur qui me disait: Hâte-toi et sors au plus tôt de Jérusalem, parce qu’on n’y recevra pas le témoignage que tu rendras de moi. —
19 I said, 'Lord, they themselves know that I imprisoned and beat those who believed in you in every synagogue.
Seigneur, répondis-je, ils savent eux-mêmes que je faisais mettre en prison et battre de verges dans les synagogues ceux qui croyaient en vous,
20 When the blood of Stephen your witness was spilled, I also was standing by and agreeing, and I was guarding the cloaks of those who killed him.'
et lorsqu’on répandit le sang d’Etienne, votre témoin, j’étais moi-même présent, joignant mon approbation à celle des autres et gardant les vêtements de ceux qui le lapidaient.
21 But he said to me, 'Go, because I will send you far away to the Gentiles.'”
Alors il me dit: Va, c’est aux nations lointaines que je veux t’envoyer. »
22 They listened to him until he said this. Then they shouted and said, “Away with such a fellow from the earth, for it is not right that he should live.”
Les Juifs l’avaient écouté jusqu’à ces mots; ils élevèrent alors la voix, en disant: « Ote de la terre un pareil homme; il n’est pas digne de vivre. »
23 As they were shouting, throwing off their cloaks, and throwing dust into the air,
Et comme ils poussaient de grands cris, jetant leurs manteaux et lançant de la poussière en l’air,
24 the chief captain commanded Paul to be brought into the fortress. He ordered that he should be questioned with scourging, so that he himself might know why they were shouting against him like that.
le tribun ordonna de faire entrer Paul dans la forteresse et de lui donner la question par le fouet, afin de savoir pour quel motif ils criaient ainsi contre lui.
25 When they had tied him up with the thongs, Paul said to the centurion who was standing by, “Is it lawful for you to scourge a man who is a Roman and who has not been put on trial?”
Déjà les soldats l’avaient lié avec les courroies, lorsque Paul dit au centurion qui était là: « Vous est-il permis de flageller un citoyen romain, qui n’est pas même condamné? »
26 When the centurion heard this, he went to the chief captain and told him, saying, “What are you about to do? For this man is a Roman citizen.”
A ces mots, le centurion alla trouver le tribun pour l’avertir, et lui dit: « Que vas-tu faire? Cet homme est citoyen romain. »
27 The chief captain came and said to him, “Tell me, are you a Roman citizen?” Paul said, “Yes.”
Le tribun vint et dit à Paul: « Dis-moi, es-tu citoyen romain? » « Oui, » répondit-il;
28 The chief captain answered, “It was only with a large amount of money that I acquired citizenship.” But Paul said, “I was born a Roman citizen.”
et le tribun repris: « Moi, j’ai acheté bien cher ce droit de cité. » — « Et moi, dit Paul, je l’ai par ma naissance. »
29 Then the men who were going to question him left him immediately. The chief captain also was afraid, when he learned that Paul was a Roman citizen, because he had tied him up.
Aussitôt ceux qui se disposaient à lui donner la question se retirèrent; et le tribun aussi eut peur, quand il sut que Paul était citoyen romain et qu’il l’avait fait lier.
30 On the next day, the chief captain wanted to know the truth about the Jews' accusations against Paul. So he untied his bonds and ordered the chief priests and all the council to meet. Then he brought Paul down and placed him in their midst.
Le lendemain, voulant savoir exactement de quoi les Juifs l’accusaient, il lui fit ôter ses liens, et donna l’ordre aux princes des prêtres et à tout le Sanhédrin de se réunir; puis, ayant fait descendre Paul, il le plaça au milieu d’eux.
