2 Chronicles 14

1 Abijah slept with his ancestors, and they buried him in the city of David. Asa, his son, became king in his place. In his days the land was quiet ten years.

Abiyya s’endormit avec ses pères et on l’ensevelit dans la Cité de David. Son fils Asa lui succéda sur le trône. Pendant son règne le pays eut dix ans de repos.

2 Asa did what was good and right in the eyes of Yahweh his God,

Asa fit ce qui est bien et droit aux yeux de l’Eternel, son Dieu.

3 for he took away the foreign altars and the high places. He broke down the stone pillars and cut down the Asherah poles.

Il fit disparaître les autels des divinités étrangères et les hauts lieux, brisa les stèles et abattit les statues d’Astarté.

4 He commanded Judah to seek Yahweh, the God of their ancestors, and to carry out the law and the commandments.

Il recommanda à Juda de rechercher l’Eternel, Dieu de leurs pères, et de pratiquer la Loi et les commandements.

5 Also he took away the high places and the incense altars from all the cities of Judah. The kingdom had rest under him.

Il supprima de toutes les villes de Juda les hauts lieux et les statues du soleil. Le royaume fut en repos sous sa direction.

6 He built fortified cities in Judah, for the land was quiet, and he had no war in those years, because Yahweh had given him peace.

Il bâtit des villes fortes en Juda, car le pays jouissait de la paix, et il n’eut pas de guerre à soutenir au cours de ces années, le Seigneur lui ayant donné du repos.

7 For Asa said to Judah, “Let us build these cities and make walls around them, and towers, gates, and bars; the land is still ours because we have sought Yahweh our God. We have sought him, and he has given us peace on every side.” So they built and succeeded.

Il dit à Juda: "Fortifions ces villes et entourons-les de murs, de tours, de portes et de verrous; le pays est encore libre devant nous, parce que nous avons recherché l’Eternel, notre Dieu; nous l’avons recherché et il a assuré notre tranquillité de toutes parts." l’œuvre de construction fut menée à bonne fin.

8 Asa had an army that carried shields and spears; from Judah he had 300,000 men, and from Benjamin, 280,000 men who carried shields and drew bows. All of these were mighty men.

Asa disposait d’une armée de trois cent mille hommes de Juda, armés de boucliers longs et de lances, et de deux cent quatre-vingt mille hommes de Benjamin, portant le bouclier et maniant l’arc. C’Étaient tous de vaillants guerriers!

9 Zerah the Cushite came against them with an army of one million soldiers and three hundred chariots; he came to Mareshah.

Zérah, l’Ethiopien, marcha contre eux avec une armée d’un million d’hommes et trois cents chars, et il s’avança jusqu’à Marêcha.

10 Then Asa went out to meet him, and they set the battle lines in order in the Valley of Zephathah at Mareshah.

Asa se porta à sa rencontre, et la bataille s’engagea dans la vallée qui s’étend vers Cefat du côté de Marêcha.

11 Asa cried to Yahweh, his God, and said, “Yahweh, there is no one but you to help one who has no strength when he is facing many. Help us, Yahweh our God, for we rely on you, and in your name we have come against this vast number. Yahweh, you are our God; do not let man defeat you.”

Asa invoqua l’Eternel, son Dieu, et dit: "Seigneur, il n’est pas plus difficile pour toi de donner la victoire au faible qu’au puissant; viens à notre secours, Eternel, notre Dieu, car c’est sur toi que nous nous appuyons, c’est en ton nom que nous avons marché contre cette multitude. Tu es l’Eternel, notre Dieu: que le mortel ne puisse rien entreprendre contre toi!"

12 So Yahweh struck the Cushites before Asa and Judah; the Cushites fled.

L’Eternel fit succomber les Ethiopiens devant Asa et Juda, et ils durent prendre la fuite.

13 Asa and the soldiers with him pursued them to Gerar. So many Cushites fell that they could not recover, for they were completely destroyed before Yahweh and his army. The army carried away very much plunder.

Asa et les gens qui étaient avec lui les poursuivirent jusqu’à Gherar, et il en tomba, parmi les Ethiopiens, jusqu’à leur entier anéantissement, car ils furent brisés par l’Eternel et par son armée. Le butin enlevé fut extrêmement considérable.

14 The army destroyed all the villages around Gerar, for terror of Yahweh had come on the inhabitants. The army plundered all the villages, and there was much booty in them.

Les Judéens prirent de vive force toutes les villes situées dans les environs de Gherar, car la terreur de l’Eternel s’était abattue sur elles; ils pillèrent toutes ces villes, qui renfermaient un nombreux butin.

15 The army also destroyed the tent settlements of the shepherding nomads; they carried away sheep in abundance, as well as camels, and then they returned to Jerusalem.

Ils s’attaquèrent aussi aux campements de troupeaux et razzièrent quantité de brebis et de chameaux; puis ils retournèrent à Jérusalem.
