1 Corinthians 7
1 As concerninge the thinges wherof ye wrote vnto me: it is good for a ma not to touche a woman.
Voici ma réponse aux divers sujets de votre lettre: L'homme fait bien de renoncer au mariage.
2 Neverthelesse to avoyde fornicacio let every man have his wyfe: and let every woman have her husbande.
Cependant, pour éviter tout dérèglement, que chaque homme ait sa femme, que chaque femme ait son mari;
3 Let the man geve vnto the wyfe due benevolence. Lykwyse also the wyfe vnto the man.
que le mari remplisse ses devoirs envers sa femme, et la femme envers son mari.
4 The wyfe hath not power over her awne body: but the husbande. And lykewyse the man hath not power over his awne body: but the wyfe
Le corps de la femme ne lui appartient pas, il est à son mari. De même le corps du mari ne lui appartient pas, il est à sa femme.
5 Withdrawe not youre selves one from another excepte it be with consent for a tyme for to geve youre selves to fastynge and prayer. And afterwarde come agayne to the same thynge lest Satan tempt you for youre incontinencye.
Ne refusez pas d'être l'un à l'autre, sauf d'un commun accord et momentanément pour vaquer à la prière; puis retournez ensemble, de peur que Satan ne se serve de votre incontinence pour vous tenter.
6 This I saye of faveour not of comaundement.
En parlant ainsi, je vous fais une concession, je ne vous donne pas d'ordre.
7 For I wolde that all men were as I my selfe am: but every man hath his proper gyfte of God one after this maner another after that.
Je voudrais que tous les hommes fussent comme moi: mais chacun reçoit de Dieu son don particulier, l'un celui-ci, l'autre celui-là.
8 I saye vnto the vnmaried men and widdowes: it is good for them yf they abyde eve as I do.
Je dis aux hommes non mariés et aux veuves: il est bon que vous restiez ainsi, comme moi.
9 But and yf they canot abstayne let them mary. For it is better to mary then to burne.
Mais si vous ne pouvez vous astreindre à la continence, mariez-vous. Car il vaut mieux se marier que de brûler.
10 Vnto the maryed comaunde not I but the Lorde: that the wyfe separate not her selfe from the man.
A ceux qui sont mariés, j'ordonne ceci (non pas moi, mais le Seigneur): que la femme ne se sépare point de son mari
11 Yf she separate her selfe let her remayne vnmaryed or be reconciled vnto her husbande agayne. And let not the husbande put awaye his wyfe from him.
(si elle s'en trouvait séparée, qu'elle reste sans se remarier ou qu'elle se réconcilie avec lui); que le mari ne répudie point sa femme.
12 To the remnaunt speake I and not the lorde. Yf eny brother have a wyfe that beleveth not yf she be content to dwell with him let him not put her awaye.
Aux autres je dis (moi, non le Seigneur): si un frère a pour femme une païenne et qu'elle consente à vivre avec lui, qu'il ne divorce pas.
13 And ye woma which hath to her husbande an infidell yf he consent to dwell with her let her not put him awaye.
Et si une femme a pour mari un païen et qu'il consente à vivre avec elle, qu'elle ne divorce pas.
14 For ye vnbelevynge husbande is sanctified by the wyfe: and the vnbelevynge wyfe is sanctified by the husbande. Or els were youre chyldren vnclene: but now are they pure.
Car la femme a rapproché des fidèles son mari païen; le frère a rapproché des fidèles sa femme païenne; si cela n'était pas, vos enfants seraient hors de l'Église, tandis qu'ils sont au nombre des fidèles.
15 But and yf the vnbelevynge departe let him departe. A brother or a sister is not in subiection to soche. God hath called vs in peace.
Si la partie païenne veut se séparer, qu'elle se sépare! dans ce cas, le frère ou la soeur ne sent pas liés, quoique Dieu vous ait appelés à vivre en paix.
16 For how knowest thou o woman whether thou shalt save that man or no? Other how knowest thou o man whether thou shalt save that woman or no?
Sais-tu, en effet, femme, si tu ne sauveras pas ton mari? Sais-tu, mari, si tu ne sauveras pas ta femme?
17 but even as God hath distributed to every man. As the lorde hath called every person so let him walke: and so orden I in all congregacios.
En général, chacun doit garder la part que le Seigneur lui a faite, rester là où il était quand Dieu l'a appelé. C'est là ce que j'ordonne dans toutes les Églises.
18 Yf eny man be called beynge circumcised let him adde nothinge therto. Yf eny be called vncircumcised: let him not be circucised.
As-tu été appelé circoncis? ne dissimule pas ta circoncision; as-tu été appelé incirconcis? ne te fais pas circoncire.
19 Circumcision is nothinge vncircumcision is nothinge: but the kepyng of the comaundmentes of god is altogether.
La circoncision n'est rien, l'incirconcision n'est rien, mais l'observation des commandements de Dieu...
20 Let every man abyde in the same state wherin he was called.
Chacun doit rester là où il était quand il a été appelé.
21 Arte thou called a servaut? care not for it. Neverthelesse yf thou mayst be fre vse it rather.
As-tu été appelé esclave? ne t'en soucie pas, et alors même que tu pourrais te libérer, reste plutôt esclave,
22 For he that is called in the lorde beynge a servaunt is the lordes freman. Lykwyse he that is called beynge fre is Christes servaut.
car l'esclave appelé au Seigneur est l'affranchi du Seigneur, et de même, l'homme libre appelé est l'esclave de Christ.
23 Ye are dearly bought be not mennes seruauntes.
Vous avez été achetés un grand prix; ne devenez pas esclaves des hommes,
24 Brethren let everye man wherin he is called therin abyde with God.
et que chacun, mes frères, reste devant Dieu là où il était quand il a été appelé.
25 As concernynge virgins I have no comaundment of the lorde: yet geve I counsell as one that hath obtayned mercye of the lorde to be faythfull.
Pour ceux ou celles qui sont vierges, je n'ai point reçu d'ordre du Seigneur; mais je donne mon opinion comme étant, par la miséricorde du Seigneur, digne de confiance.
26 I suppose that it is good for the present necessite. For it is good for a ma so to be.
Je crois qu'il vaut mieux, puisque la crise finale est imminente, oui, je crois qu'il vaut mieux pour l'homme rester comme il est.
27 Arte thou bounde vnto a wyfe? seke not to be lowsed. Arte thou lowsed from a wyfe? seke not a wyfe.
Es-tu engagé avec une femme? ne cherche pas à rompre; n'as-tu aucun engagement? ne cherche point de femme.
28 But and yf thou take a wyfe thou synnest not. Lykwyse if a virgin mary she synneth not. Neverthelesse soche shall have trouble in their flesshe: but I faver you.
Si cependant tu te maries, ce n'est pas un péché; et si une vierge se marie, ce n'est pas un péché. Mais ceux qui font cela auront des souffrances dans cette vie, et moi je voudrais les leur épargner.
29 This saye I brethre the tyme is shorte. It remayneth that they which have wives be as though they had none
Je vous assure, frères, que le temps est court; voici ce qui reste à faire: que ceux qui ont des femmes soient comme n'en ayant pas;
30 and they that wepe be as though thy wept not: and they that reioyce be as though they reioysed not: and they that bye be as though they possessed not:
ceux qui pleurent comme ne pleurant pas; ceux qui se réjouissent comme ne se réjouissant pas; ceux qui achètent comme ne possédant pas;
31 and they yt vse this worlde be as though they vsed it not. For the fassion of this worlde goeth awaye.
ceux qui usent de ce monde, comme n'en usant absolument pas; car la figure de ce monde passe!
32 I wolde have you without care: the single man careth for the thinges of the lorde how he maye please the lorde.
Je voudrais que vous n'eussiez pas de soucis mondains: or, l'homme non marié a le souci des affaires du Seigneur; il cherche à plaire au Seigneur.
33 But he that hath maried careth for the thinges of the worlde howe he maye please his wyfe.
L'homme marié a le souci des affaires de ce monde; il cherche à plaire à sa femme.
34 There is differece bitwene a virgin and a wyfe. The single woman careth for the thinges of the lorde that she maye be pure both in body and also in sprete But she that is maryed careth for the thinges of the worlde how she maye please her husband.
Il y a la même différence entre la femme mariée et la vierge: la vierge a le souci des affaires du Seigneur, afin d'être sainte de corps et d'esprit; mais la femme mariée a le souci des affaires de ce monde; elle cherche à plaire à son mari.
35 This speake I for youre proffit not to tangle you in a snare: but for that which is honest and comly vnto you and that ye maye quyetly cleave vnto the lorde wt out separacion.
Je vous dis cela dans votre intérêt, non pour vous tendre un piège; je vous le dis en vue des convenances et de ce qui est le plus propre à vous attacher sans distraction au culte du Seigneur.
36 If eny man thinke that it is vncomly for his virgin if she passe the tyme of mariage ad if so nede requyre let him do what he listeth he synneth not: let the be coupled in mariage.
Si cependant quelqu'un pense qu'il y a des inconvénients pour sa fille à passer l'âge du mariage, et s'il croit devoir agir en conséquence, qu'il fasse ce qu'il voudra! Ce n'est pas un péché, qu'on se marie!
37 Neverthelesse he yt purposeth surely in his herte havynge none nede: but hath power over his awne will: and hath so decreed in his herte that he will kepe his virgin doth well.
Mais celui qui a pris dans son coeur une résolution inébranlable sans subir aucune contrainte, maître de faire ce qu'il veut, oui, qui a décidé dans le fond de son coeur de garder sa fille vierge, fait bien.
38 So then he that ioyneth his virgin in maryage doth well. But he that ioyneth not his virgin in mariage doth better.
Ainsi celui qui marie sa fille fait bien, celui qui ne la marie pas fait mieux.
39 The wyfe is bounde to the lawe as longe as her husband liveth If her husbande slepe she is at liberte to mary with whom she wyll only in the lorde.
Une femme est liée aussi longtemps que son mari est vivant. Si le mari vient à mourir, elle est libre de se remarier avec qui elle veut, seulement que ce soit dans le Seigneur.
40 But she is happiar yf she so abyde in my iudgmet And I thinke verely that I have the sprete of God.
Cependant elle est plus heureuse si elle reste comme elle est; c'est mon opinion; et je crois, moi aussi, avoir l'Esprit de Dieu.
