< Matthew 4 >

1 Then Jesus was led up into the Wilderness by the Spirit to be tempted by the Devil.
Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.
2 And, after he had fasted for forty days and forty nights, he became hungry.
And having fasted forty days and forty nights, afterward he was hungry.
3 And the Tempter came to him, and said: “If you are God’s Son, tell these stones to become loaves of bread.”
And after he who tempts came, he said to him, If thou are the Son of God, speak so that these stones may become bread.
4 But Jesus answered: “Scripture says — ‘It is not on bread alone that man is to live, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”
But having answered, he said, It is written, Man will not live on bread alone, but on every word coming out through the mouth of God.
5 Then the Devil took him to the Holy City, and, placing him on the parapet of the temple, said to him:
Then the devil takes him into the holy city, and stands him on the pinnacle of the temple.
6 “If you are God’s Son, throw yourself down, for Scripture says — ‘He will give his angels commands about thee, and on their hands they will upbear thee, lest ever thou shouldst strike thy foot against a stone.’”
And he says to him, If thou are the Son of God, cast thyself down, for it is written, He will command his agents about thee, and, They will take thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone.
7 “Scripture also says,” answered Jesus, “Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.’”
Jesus said to him, Again it is written, Thou shall not challenge the Lord thy God.
8 The third time, the Devil took Jesus to a very high mountain, and, showing him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendour, said to him:
Again, the devil takes him onto an exceedingly high mountain, and shows him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them.
9 “All these I will give you, if you will fall at my feet and do homage to me.”
And he says to him, All these things I give thee, if after falling down, thou will worship me.
10 Then Jesus said to him: “Begone, Satan! for Scripture says — ‘Thou shalt do homage to the Lord thy God, and worship him only.’”
Then Jesus says to him, Get thee behind me, Satan, for it is written, Thou shall worship the Lord thy God, and him only thou shall serve.
11 Then the Devil left him alone, and angels came and ministered to him.
Then the devil leaves him, and behold, agents came and served him.
12 When Jesus heard that John had been committed to prison, he retired to Galilee.
Now when Jesus heard that John was delivered up, he departed into Galilee.
13 Afterwards, leaving Nazareth, he went and settled at Capernaum, which is by the side of the Sea, within the borders of Zebulun and Naphtali;
And having left Nazareth behind, after coming, he dwelt in Capernaum by the sea in the regions of Zebulun and Naphtali,
14 in fulfilment of these words in the Prophet Isaiah —
so that what was spoken through Isaiah the prophet might be fulfilled, which says,
15 ‘The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, the land of the Road by the Sea, and beyond the Jordan, with Galilee of the Gentiles —
The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles,
16 The people who were dwelling in darkness have seen a great Light, and, for those who were dwelling in the shadow-land of Death, a Light has risen!’
the people who dwell in darkness saw a great light, and to those who dwell in the region and shadow of death, light sprang up to them.
17 At that time Jesus began to proclaim — “Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand.”
From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent ye, for the kingdom of the heavens has approached.
18 As Jesus was walking along the shore of the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers — Simon, also known as Peter, and his brother Andrew — casting a net into the Sea; for they were fishermen.
And walking by the sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen.
19 “Come and follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will set you to fish for men.”
And he says to them, Come behind me, and I will make you fishermen of men.
20 The two men left their nets at once and followed him.
And straightaway having left the nets, they followed him.
21 Going further on, he saw two other men who were also brothers, James, Zebediah’s son, and his brother John, in their boat with their father, mending their nets. Jesus called them,
And having gone on from there he saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets. And he called them.
22 and they at once left their boat and their father, and followed him.
And straightaway having left the boat and their father, they followed him.
23 And Jesus went all through Galilee, teaching in their Synagogues, proclaiming the Good News of the Kingdom, and curing every kind of disease and every kind of sickness among the people;
And Jesus went around all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the good news of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease among the people.
24 and his fame spread all through Syria. They brought to him all who were ill with any form of disease, or who were suffering pain — any who were either possessed by demons, or were lunatic, or paralysed; and he cured them.
And his fame went forth into all Syria. And they brought to him all those faring badly with various diseases, and gripped with pain, and being demon-possessed, and being lunatic, and paralyzed. And he healed them.
25 And he was followed by large crowds from Galilee, the district of the Ten Towns, Jerusalem, Judea, and from beyond the Jordan.
And many multitudes from Galilee and Decapolis and Jerusalem and Judea and beyond the Jordan followed him.
