Mark 1
1 The beginning of the Good News about Jesus Christ.
Ἀρχὴ τοῦ εὐαγγελίου ˚Ἰησοῦ ˚Χριστοῦ, Υἱοῦ ˚Θεοῦ.
2 It is said in the Prophet Isaiah — ‘Behold! I send my Messenger before thy face; he shall prepare thy way.
Καθὼς γέγραπται ἐν τῷ Ἠσαΐᾳ τῷ προφήτῃ: “Ἰδοὺ, ἀποστέλλω τὸν ἄγγελόν μου πρὸ προσώπου σου, ὃς κατασκευάσει τὴν ὁδόν σου.”
3 The voice of one crying aloud in the Wilderness: “Make ready the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.”’
“Φωνὴ βοῶντος ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ: ‘Ἑτοιμάσατε τὴν ὁδὸν ˚Κυρίου, εὐθείας ποιεῖτε τὰς τρίβους αὐτοῦ.’”
4 And in fulfilment of this, John the Baptizer appeared in the Wilderness, proclaiming a baptism upon repentance, for the forgiveness of sins.
Ἐγένετο Ἰωάννης, ὁ βαπτίζων ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ, καὶ κηρύσσων βάπτισμα μετανοίας εἰς ἄφεσιν ἁμαρτιῶν.
5 The whole of Judea, as well as all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, went out to him; and they were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins.
Καὶ ἐξεπορεύετο πρὸς αὐτὸν πᾶσα ἡ Ἰουδαία χώρα καὶ οἱ Ἱεροσολυμῖται πάντες, καὶ ἐβαπτίζοντο ὑπʼ αὐτοῦ ἐν τῷ Ἰορδάνῃ ποταμῷ, ἐξομολογούμενοι τὰς ἁμαρτίας αὐτῶν.
6 John was clad in clothing of camels’ hair, with a belt of leather round his waist, and lived on locusts and wild honey;
Καὶ ἦν ὁ Ἰωάννης ἐνδεδυμένος τρίχας καμήλου, καὶ ζώνην δερματίνην περὶ τὴν ὀσφὺν αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἔσθων ἀκρίδας καὶ μέλι ἄγριον.
7 and he proclaimed — “There is coming after me one more powerful than I, and I am not fit even to stoop down and unfasten his sandals.
Καὶ ἐκήρυσσεν λέγων, “Ἔρχεται ὁ ἰσχυρότερός μου ὀπίσω μου, οὗ οὐκ εἰμὶ ἱκανὸς, κύψας λῦσαι τὸν ἱμάντα τῶν ὑποδημάτων αὐτοῦ.
8 I have baptized you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”
Ἐγὼ ἐβάπτισα ὑμᾶς ὕδατι, αὐτὸς δὲ βαπτίσει ὑμᾶς ˚Πνεύματι Ἁγίῳ.”
9 Now about that time Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee, and was baptized by John in the Jordan.
Καὶ ἐγένετο ἐν ἐκείναις ταῖς ἡμέραις, ἦλθεν ˚Ἰησοῦς ἀπὸ Ναζαρὲτ τῆς Γαλιλαίας, καὶ ἐβαπτίσθη εἰς τὸν Ἰορδάνην ὑπὸ Ἰωάννου.
10 And just as he was coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens rent apart, and the Spirit, like a dove, descending upon him,
Καὶ εὐθὺς ἀναβαίνων ἐκ τοῦ ὕδατος, εἶδεν σχιζομένους τοὺς οὐρανοὺς, καὶ τὸ ˚Πνεῦμα ὡς περιστερὰν καταβαῖνον ἐπʼ αὐτόν.
11 and from the heavens came a voice — “Thou art my Son, the Beloved; in thee I delight.”
Καὶ φωνὴ ἐγένετο ἐκ τῶν οὐρανῶν: “Σὺ εἶ ὁ Υἱός μου ὁ ἀγαπητός, ἐν σοὶ εὐδόκησα.”
12 Immediately afterwards the Spirit drove Jesus out into the Wilderness;
Καὶ εὐθὺς τὸ ˚Πνεῦμα αὐτὸν ἐκβάλλει εἰς τὴν ἔρημον.
13 and he was there in the Wilderness forty days, tempted by Satan, and among the wild beasts, while the angels ministered to him.
Καὶ ἦν ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ τεσσεράκοντα ἡμέρας, πειραζόμενος ὑπὸ τοῦ Σατανᾶ, καὶ ἦν μετὰ τῶν θηρίων, καὶ οἱ ἄγγελοι διηκόνουν αὐτῷ.
14 After John had been committed to prison, Jesus went to Galilee, proclaiming the Good News of God —
Καὶ Μετὰ τὸ παραδοθῆναι τὸν Ἰωάννην, ἦλθεν ὁ ˚Ἰησοῦς εἰς τὴν Γαλιλαίαν, κηρύσσων τὸ εὐαγγέλιον τοῦ ˚Θεοῦ
15 “The time has come, and the Kingdom of God is at hand; repent, and believe the Good News.”
καὶ λέγων, ὅτι “Πεπλήρωται ὁ καιρὸς καὶ ἤγγικεν ἡ Βασιλεία τοῦ ˚Θεοῦ· μετανοεῖτε καὶ πιστεύετε ἐν τῷ εὐαγγελίῳ.”
16 As Jesus was going along the shore of the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net in the Sea, for they were fishermen.
Καὶ παράγων παρὰ τὴν θάλασσαν τῆς Γαλιλαίας, εἶδεν Σίμωνα καὶ Ἀνδρέαν, τὸν ἀδελφὸν Σίμωνος, ἀμφιβάλλοντας ἐν τῇ θαλάσσῃ, ἦσαν γὰρ ἁλεεῖς.
17 “Come and follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will set you to fish for men.”
Καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς ὁ ˚Ἰησοῦς, “Δεῦτε ὀπίσω μου, καὶ ποιήσω ὑμᾶς γενέσθαι ἁλεεῖς ἀνθρώπων.”
18 They left their nets at once, and followed him.
Καὶ εὐθέως ἀφέντες τὰ δίκτυα, ἠκολούθησαν αὐτῷ.
19 Going on a little further, he saw James, Zebediah’s son, and his brother John, who also were in their boat mending the nets.
Καὶ προβὰς ὀλίγον, εἶδεν Ἰάκωβον τὸν τοῦ Ζεβεδαίου, καὶ Ἰωάννην τὸν ἀδελφὸν αὐτοῦ, καὶ αὐτοὺς ἐν τῷ πλοίῳ καταρτίζοντας τὰ δίκτυα.
20 Jesus at once called them, and they left their father Zebediah in the boat with the crew, and went after him.
Καὶ εὐθὺς ἐκάλεσεν αὐτούς. Καὶ ἀφέντες τὸν πατέρα αὐτῶν Ζεβεδαῖον ἐν τῷ πλοίῳ μετὰ τῶν μισθωτῶν, ἀπῆλθον ὀπίσω αὐτοῦ.
21 And they walked into Capernaum. On the next Sabbath Jesus went into the Synagogue and began to teach.
Καὶ εἰσπορεύονται εἰς Καφαρναούμ. Καὶ εὐθέως τοῖς Σάββασιν, εἰσελθὼν εἰς τὴν συναγωγὴν, ἐδίδασκεν.
22 The people were amazed at his teaching, for he taught them like one who had authority, and not like the Teachers of the Law.
Καὶ ἐξεπλήσσοντο ἐπὶ τῇ διδαχῇ αὐτοῦ, ἦν γὰρ διδάσκων αὐτοὺς ὡς ἐξουσίαν ἔχων, καὶ οὐχ ὡς οἱ γραμματεῖς.
23 Now there was in their Synagogue at the time a man under the power of a foul spirit, who called out:
Καὶ εὐθὺς ἦν ἐν τῇ συναγωγῇ αὐτῶν ἄνθρωπος ἐν πνεύματι ἀκαθάρτῳ, καὶ ἀνέκραξεν
24 “What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are — the Holy One of God!”
λέγων, “Τί ἡμῖν καὶ σοί, ˚Ἰησοῦ Ναζαρηνέ; Ἦλθες ἀπολέσαι ἡμᾶς; Οἶδά σε τίς εἶ, ὁ Ἅγιος τοῦ ˚Θεοῦ!”
25 But Jesus rebuked the spirit: “Be silent! Come out from him.”
Καὶ ἐπετίμησεν αὐτῷ ὁ ˚Ἰησοῦς λέγων, “Φιμώθητι καὶ ἔξελθε ἐξ αὐτοῦ!”
26 The foul spirit threw the man into a fit, and with a loud cry came out from him.
Καὶ σπαράξαν αὐτὸν, τὸ πνεῦμα τὸ ἀκάθαρτον, καὶ φωνῆσαν φωνῇ μεγάλῃ, ἐξῆλθεν ἐξ αὐτοῦ.
27 And they were all so amazed that they kept asking: “What is this? Strange teaching indeed! He gives his commands with authority even to the foul spirits, and they obey him!”
Καὶ ἐθαμβήθησαν ἅπαντες, ὥστε συζητεῖν αὐτοὺς λέγοντας, “Τί ἐστιν τοῦτο; διδαχὴ καινή, κατʼ ἐξουσίαν καὶ τοῖς πνεύμασιν τοῖς ἀκαθάρτοις ἐπιτάσσει, καὶ ὑπακούουσιν αὐτῷ!”
28 And the fame of Jesus spread at once in all directions, through the whole neighbourhood of Galilee.
Καὶ ἐξῆλθεν ἡ ἀκοὴ αὐτοῦ εὐθὺς πανταχοῦ εἰς ὅλην τὴν περίχωρον τῆς Γαλιλαίας.
29 As soon as they had come out from the Synagogue, they went, with James and John, into the house of Simon and Andrew.
Καὶ εὐθὺς ἐκ τῆς συναγωγῆς ἐξελθὼν, ἦλθεν εἰς τὴν οἰκίαν Σίμωνος καὶ Ἀνδρέου, μετὰ Ἰακώβου καὶ Ἰωάννου.
30 Now Simon’s mother-in-law was lying ill with fever, and they at once told Jesus about her.
Ἡ δὲ πενθερὰ Σίμωνος κατέκειτο πυρέσσουσα, καὶ εὐθὺς λέγουσιν αὐτῷ περὶ αὐτῆς.
31 Jesus went up to her and, grasping her hand, raised her up; the fever left her, and she began to wait upon them.
Καὶ προσελθὼν, ἤγειρεν αὐτὴν, κρατήσας τῆς χειρός. Καὶ ἀφῆκεν αὐτὴν ὁ πυρετός, καὶ διηκόνει αὐτοῖς.
32 In the evening, after sunset, the people brought to Jesus all who were ill or possessed by demons;
Ὀψίας δὲ γενομένης, ὅτε ἔδυ ὁ ἥλιος, ἔφερον πρὸς αὐτὸν πάντας τοὺς κακῶς ἔχοντας καὶ τοὺς δαιμονιζομένους.
33 and the whole city was gathered round the door.
Καὶ ἦν ὅλη ἡ πόλις ἐπισυνηγμένη πρὸς τὴν θύραν.
34 Jesus cured many who were ill with various diseases, and drove out many demons, and would not permit them to speak, because they knew him to be the Christ.
Καὶ ἐθεράπευσεν πολλοὺς κακῶς ἔχοντας ποικίλαις νόσοις, καὶ δαιμόνια πολλὰ ἐξέβαλεν, καὶ οὐκ ἤφιεν τὰ δαιμόνια, λαλεῖν ὅτι ᾔδεισαν αὐτόν. ˚Χριστὸν εἶναι.
35 In the morning, long before daylight, Jesus rose and went out, and, going to a lonely spot, there began to pray.
Καὶ πρωῒ ἔννυχα λίαν, ἀναστὰς ἐξῆλθεν καὶ ἀπῆλθεν εἰς ἔρημον τόπον, κἀκεῖ προσηύχετο.
36 But Simon and his companions hastened after him;
Καὶ κατεδίωξεν αὐτὸν Σίμων καὶ οἱ μετʼ αὐτοῦ,
37 and, when they found him, they exclaimed: “Every one is looking for you!”
καὶ εὗρον αὐτὸν καὶ λέγουσιν αὐτῷ, ὅτι “Πάντες ζητοῦσίν σε!”
38 But Jesus said to them: “Let us go somewhere else, into the country towns near, that I may make my proclamation in them also; for that was why I came.”
Καὶ λέγει αὐτοῖς, “Ἄγωμεν ἀλλαχοῦ εἰς τὰς ἐχομένας κωμοπόλεις, ἵνα καὶ ἐκεῖ κηρύξω, εἰς τοῦτο γὰρ ἐξῆλθον.”
39 And he went about making his proclamation in their Synagogues all through Galilee, and driving out the demons.
Καὶ ἦλθεν κηρύσσων, εἰς τὰς συναγωγὰς αὐτῶν εἰς ὅλην τὴν Γαλιλαίαν, καὶ τὰ δαιμόνια ἐκβάλλων.
40 One day a leper came to Jesus and, falling on his knees, begged him for help. “If only you are willing,” he said, “you are able to make me clean.”
Καὶ ἔρχεται πρὸς αὐτὸν λεπρὸς, παρακαλῶν αὐτὸν λέγων αὐτῷ, ὅτι “Ἐὰν θέλῃς, δύνασαί με καθαρίσαι.”
41 Moved with compassion, Jesus stretched out his hand and touched him, saying as he did so: “I am willing; become clean.”
Καὶ σπλαγχνισθεὶς, ἐκτείνας τὴν χεῖρα αὐτοῦ, ἥψατο καὶ λέγει αὐτῷ, “Θέλω, καθαρίσθητι.”
42 Instantly the leprosy left the man, and he became clean;
Καὶ εὐθὺς ἀπῆλθεν ἀπʼ αὐτοῦ ἡ λέπρα, καὶ ἐκαθαρίσθη.
43 and then Jesus, after sternly warning him, immediately sent him away, and said to him:
Καὶ ἐμβριμησάμενος αὐτῷ, εὐθὺς ἐξέβαλεν αὐτόν,
44 “Be careful not to say anything to any one; but go and show yourself to the Priest, and make the offerings for your cleansing directed by Moses, as evidence of your cure.”
καὶ λέγει αὐτῷ, “Ὅρα, μηδενὶ μηδὲν εἴπῃς, ἀλλὰ ὕπαγε, σεαυτὸν δεῖξον τῷ ἱερεῖ, καὶ προσένεγκε περὶ τοῦ καθαρισμοῦ σου ἃ προσέταξεν Μωϋσῆς, εἰς μαρτύριον αὐτοῖς.”
45 The man, however, went away, and began to speak about it publicly, and to spread the story so widely, that Jesus could no longer go openly into a town, but stayed outside in lonely places; and people came to him from every direction.
Ὁ δὲ ἐξελθὼν ἤρξατο κηρύσσειν πολλὰ καὶ διαφημίζειν τὸν λόγον, ὥστε μηκέτι αὐτὸν δύνασθαι φανερῶς εἰς πόλιν εἰσελθεῖν, ἀλλʼ ἔξω ἐπʼ ἐρήμοις τόποις ἦν, καὶ ἤρχοντο πρὸς αὐτὸν πάντοθεν.
