John 11
1 Now a man named Lazarus, of Bethany, was lying ill; he belonged to the same village as Mary and her sister Martha.
Es war aber einer krank, Lazarus von Bethanien, aus dem Flecken Marias und Marthas, ihrer Schwester.
2 This Mary, whose brother Lazarus was ill, was the Mary who anointed the Master with perfume, and wiped his feet with her hair.
Maria war es aber, die den Herrn mit Salbe salbte und Seine Füße mit ihren Haaren abwischte. Derselbigen Bruder Lazarus war krank.
3 The sisters, therefore, sent this message to Jesus — ‘Master, your friend is ill’;
Da sandten die Schwestern an Ihn und ließen Ihm sagen: Herr, siehe, der, den Du lieb hast, ist krank.
4 and, when Jesus heard it, he said: “This illness is not to end in death, but is to redound to the honour of God, in order that the Son of God may be honoured through it.”
Da Jesus aber es hörte, sprach Er: Diese Krankheit ist nicht zum Tode, sondern um der Herrlichkeit Gottes willen, auf daß der Sohn Gottes durch sie verherrlicht werde.
5 Jesus loved Martha and her sister, and Lazarus.
Jesus aber liebte Martha und ihre Schwester und Lazarus.
6 Yet, when he heard of the illness of Lazarus, he still stayed two days in the place where he was.
Als Er nun hörte, daß er krank war, da blieb Er zwei Tage an dem Ort, da Er war.
7 Then, after that, he said to his disciples: “Let us go to Judea again.”
Danach nach diesem spricht Er zu den Jüngern: Lasset uns wiederum nach Judäa ziehen.
8 “Rabbi,” they replied, “the Jews were but just now seeking to stone you; and are you going there again?”
Die Jünger sagen zu Ihm: Rabbi, eben erst suchten die Juden Dich zu steinigen; und Du gehst wieder dahin?
9 “Are not there twelve hours in the day?” answered Jesus. “If a man walks about in the day-time, he does not stumble, because he can see the light of the sun;
Jesus antwortete: Sind nicht zwölf Stunden des Tages? Wenn einer am Tage wandelt, stößt er sich nicht, weil er das Licht dieser Welt sieht.
10 but, if he walks about at night, he stumbles, because he has not the light.”
Wandelt jemand aber in der Nacht, dann stößt er sich; denn das Licht ist nicht ihn ihm.
11 And, when he had said this, he added: “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep; but I am going that I may wake him.”
Solches sprach Er, und danach sagt Er zu ihnen: Lazarus, unser Freund, schlummert, aber Ich ziehe hin, um ihn aus dem Schlafe zu wecken.
12 “If he has fallen asleep, Master, he will get well,” said the disciples.
Sprechen nun Seine Jünger: Herr, wenn er schlummert, so wird er gerettet werden.
13 But Jesus meant that he was dead; they, however, supposed that he was speaking of natural sleep.
Jesus aber hatte von seinem Tode gesprochen. Sie meinten aber, Er spreche von dem Schlummern des Schlafes.
14 Then he said to them plainly: “Lazarus is dead;
Da sagte ihnen nun Jesus frei heraus: Lazarus ist gestorben;
15 and I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, so that you may learn to believe in me. But let us go to him.”
Und Ich freue Mich um euretwegen, daß Ich nicht dort gewesen bin, auf daß ihr glaubt; aber lasset uns zu ihm ziehen!
16 At this, Thomas, who was called ‘The Twin,’ said to his fellow-disciples: “Let us go too, so that we may die with him.”
Da sprach Thomas, genannt Didymus, zu seinen Mitjüngern: Lasset auch uns ziehen, daß wir mit Ihm sterben.
17 When Jesus reached the place, he found that Lazarus had been four days in the tomb already.
Als nun Jesus kam, fand Er, daß er schon vier Tage in der Gruft lag.
18 Bethany being only about two miles from Jerusalem,
Bethanien aber war nahe bei Jerusalem, bei fünfzehn Stadien.
19 a number of the Jews had come there to condole with Martha and Mary on their brother’s death.
Und viele von den Juden waren zu denen bei Martha und Maria gekommen, um sie zu vertrösten über ihrem Bruder.
20 When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went to meet him; but Mary sat quietly at home.
Als nun Martha hörte, daß Jesus komme, ging sie Ihm entgegen; Maria aber saß im Hause.
21 “Master,” Martha said to Jesus, “if you had been here, my brother would not have died.
Martha sprach nun zu Jesus: Herr, wärest Du hier gewesen, mein Bruder wäre wohl nicht gestorben.
22 Even now, I know that God will grant you whatever you ask him.”
Aber auch nun weiß ich, daß, worum Du Gott bitten wirst, wird Dir Gott geben.
23 “Your brother shall rise to life,” said Jesus.
Spricht Jesus zu ihr: Dein Bruder wird auferstehen.
24 “I know that he will,” replied Martha, “in the resurrection at the Last Day.”
Spricht Martha zu Ihm: Ich weiß, daß er auferstehen wird in der Auferstehung am letzten Tag.
25 “I am the Resurrection and the Life,” said Jesus. “He that believes in me shall live, though he die;
Jesus sprach zu ihr: Ich bin die Auferstehung und das Leben! Wer an Mich glaubt, wird leben, wenn er auch stürbe.
Und wer da lebt und an Mich glaubt, der wird nicht sterben in Ewigkeit. Glaubst Du das? (aiōn g165)
27 “Yes Master,” she answered; “I have learned to believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, ‘who was to come’ into the world.”
Sie spricht zu Ihm: Ja, Herr, ich glaube, daß Du bist der Christus, der Sohn Gottes, Der in die Welt kommen soll.
28 After saying this, Martha went and called her sister Mary, and whispered: “The Teacher is here, and is asking for you.”
Und als sie das gesagt hatte, ging sie hin und rief insgeheim ihrer Schwester Maria und sprach: Der Lehrer ist da und ruft dich.
29 As soon as Mary heard that, she got up quickly, and went to meet him.
Als diese es hörte, machte sie sich schnell auf und kam zu Ihm.
30 Jesus had not then come into the village, but was still at the place where Martha had met him.
Jesus war aber noch nicht in den Flecken gekommen, sondern war an dem Orte, wo Ihm Martha entgegenkam.
31 So the Jews, who were in the house with Mary, condoling with her, when they saw her get up quickly and go out, followed her, thinking that she was going to the tomb to weep there.
Da nun die Juden, die bei ihr im Hause waren und sie vertrösteten, sahen, daß Maria eilig aufstand und hinausging, folgten sie ihr nach und sprachen: Sie geht hin zur Gruft, um dort zu weinen.
32 When Mary came where Jesus was and saw him, she threw herself at his feet. “Master,” she exclaimed, “if you had been here, my brother would not have died!”
Wie nun Maria dahin kam, wo Jesus war, und Ihn sah, fiel sie zu Seinen Füßen und sprach zu Ihm: Herr, wärest Du da gewesen, mein Bruder wäre wohl nicht gestorben.
33 When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come with her weeping also, he groaned deeply, and was greatly distressed.
Wie Jesus nun sie weinen sah, und die Juden weinen, die mit ihr gekommen waren, ergrimmte Er im Geiste und Er Selbst erbebte.
34 “Where have you buried him?” he asked. “Come and see, Master,” they answered.
Und sprach: Wo habt ihr ihn hingelegt? Sie sagen zu Ihm: Herr, komm und siehe es.
35 Jesus burst into tears.
Und Jesus gingen die Augen über.
36 “How he must have loved him!” the Jews exclaimed;
Da sagten die Juden: Siehe, wie hat Er ihn so lieb gehabt!
37 but some of them said: “Could not this man, who gave sight to the blind man, have also prevented Lazarus from dying?”
Einige aber aus ihnen sagten: Konnte Er, Der dem Blinden die Augen aufgetan hat, nicht machen, daß auch dieser nicht stürbe?
38 Again groaning inwardly, Jesus came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone lay against the mouth of it.
Jesus ergrimmte nun wiederum in Sich und kam zu der Gruft. Es war aber eine Höhle und ein Stein lag darauf.
39 “Move the stone away,” said Jesus. “Master,” said Martha, the sister of the dead man, “by this time the smell must be offensive, for this is the fourth day since his death.”
Jesus sprach: Hebt den Stein weg! Spricht zu Ihm die Schwester des Verstorbenen, Martha: Herr, er riecht schon; denn es ist der vierte Tag.
40 “Did not I tell you,” replied Jesus, “that, if you would believe in me, you should see the glory of God?”
Spricht Jesus zu ihr: Sagte Ich dir nicht, wenn du glaubtest, würdest du die Herrlichkeit Gottes sehen?
41 So they moved the stone away; and Jesus, with uplifted eyes, said: “Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard my prayer;
Sie hoben nun den Stein weg, da der Verstorbene lag. Jesus aber hob die Augen auf und sprach: Vater, Ich danke Dir, daß Du Mich gehört hast.
42 I know that thou always hearest me; but I say this for the sake of the people standing near, so that they may believe that thou has sent me as thy Messenger.”
Ich wußte aber, daß Du Mich allezeit hörst; aber wegen des Gedränges, das umhersteht, habe Ich gesprochen, auf daß sie glauben, daß Du Mich entsandt hast.
43 Then, after saying this, Jesus called in a loud voice: “Lazarus! come out!”
Und als Er dies gesagt hatte, schrie Er laut mit großer Stimme: Lazarus, komm heraus!
44 The dead man came out, wrapped hand and foot in a winding-sheet; his face, too, had been wrapped in a cloth. “Set him free,” said Jesus, “and let him go.”
Und der Verstorbene kam heraus, an Füßen und Händen mit Binden gebunden, und sein Gesicht war mit einem Schweißtuch umbunden. Spricht Jesus zu ihnen: Löset ihn und lasset ihn hingehen.
45 In consequence of this, many of the Jews, who had come to visit Mary and had seen what Jesus did, learned to believe in him.
Viele nun aus den Juden, die zu Martha gekommen und angesehen hatten, was Er tat, glaubten an Ihn.
46 Some of them, however, went to the Pharisees, and told them what he had done.
Etliche aber aus ihnen gingen hin zu den Pharisäern und sagten ihnen, was Jesus getan hatte.
47 Upon this the Chief Priests and the Pharisees called a meeting of the High Council, and said: “What are we to do, now that this man is giving so many signs?
Da versammelten die Hohenpriester und die Pharisäer den Rat und sprachen: Was tun wir, dieweil dieser Mensch viele Zeichen tut?
48 If we let him alone as we are doing, every one will believe in him; and the Romans will come and will take from us both our City and our Nationality.”
Lassen wir Ihn also, dann werden alle an Ihn glauben, und die Römer kommen und nehmen uns beides, den Ort und die Völkerschaft weg.
49 One of them, however, Caiaphas, who was High Priest that year, said to them:
Einer aber aus ihnen, Kaiaphas, der selbigen Jahres Hoherpriester war, sprach zu ihnen: Ihr wißt nichts,
50 “You are utterly mistaken. You do not consider that it is better for you that one man should die for the people, rather than the whole nation should be destroyed.”
Noch bedenkt ihr, daß es zuträglich für uns ist, ein Mensch sterbe für das Volk, und daß nicht die ganze Völkerschaft verderbe.
51 Now he did not say this of his own accord; but, as High Priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus was to die for the nation —
Dies sprach er aber nicht von ihm selbst; sondern weil er selbigen Jahres Hoherpriester war, weissagte er, daß Jesus für die Völkerschaft sterben würde,
52 And not for the nation only, but also that he might unite in one body the Children of God now scattered far and wide.
Und nicht nur für die Völkerschaft allein, sondern daß Er auch die zerstreuten Kinder Gottes in eins zusammenführete.
53 So from that day they plotted to put Jesus to death.
Von selbigen Tage nun ratschlagten sie, daß sie ihn töteten.
54 In consequence of this, Jesus did not go about publicly among the Jews any more, but left that neighbourhood, and went into the country bordering on the Wilderness, to a town called Ephraim, where he stayed with his disciples.
Jesus wandelte nun nicht mehr frei heraus unter den Juden, sondern ging von dannen weg in die Gegend nahe bei der Wüste in eine Stadt, genannt Ephraim, und verweilte allda mit Seinen Jüngern.
55 But the Jewish Festival of the Passover was near; and many people had gone up from the country to Jerusalem, for their ‘purification,’ before the Festival began.
Es war aber nahe das Pascha der Juden, und viele aus der Gegend gingen vor dem Pascha hinauf nach Jerusalem, um sich zu reinigen.
56 So they looked for Jesus there, and said to one another, as they stood in the Temple Courts: “What do you think? Do you think he will come to the Festival?”
Sie suchten nun Jesus und sprachen zueinander, wie sie in dem Heiligtum standen: Was dünket euch? Daß Er wohl nicht auf das Fest kommen wird?
57 The Chief Priests and the Pharisees had already issued orders that, if any one learned where Jesus was, he should give information, so that they might arrest him.
Es hatten aber beide, die Hohenpriester und die Pharisäer ein Gebot geben, so jemand erfahre, wo Er wäre, sollte er es anzeigen, daß sie Ihn griffen.
