Galatians 4
1 My point is this — As long as the heir is under age, there is no difference between him and a slave, though he is master of the whole estate.
Pero digo: mientras el heredero es niño, aunque es señor de todas las cosas, en nada difiere de un esclavo,
2 He is subject to the control of guardians and stewards, during the period for which his father has power to appoint them.
sino está bajo tutores y administradores hasta el tiempo fijado por el padre.
3 And so is it with us; when we were under age, as it were, we were slaves to the puerile teaching of this world;
Así también nosotros, cuando éramos niños, nos esclavizábamos bajo los rudimentos del mundo.
4 but, when the full time came, God sent his Son — born a woman’s child, born subject to Law —
Pero cuando vino el cumplimiento del tiempo, Dios envió a su Hijo, nacido de mujer, nacido bajo [la] Ley,
5 To ransom those who were subject to Law, so that we might take our position as sons.
para que redimiera a los que estaban bajo [la ]Ley, a fin de que recibiéramos la adopción.
6 And it is because you are sons that God sent into our hearts the Spirit of his Son, with the cry — ‘Abba, our Father.’
Por cuanto [ustedes] son hijos, Dios envió al Espíritu de su Hijo a nuestros corazones, Quien clama: ¡Abba! (Padre).
7 You, therefore, are no longer a slave, but a son; and, if a son, then an heir also, by God’s appointment.
Por tanto, ya no eres esclavo sino hijo, y si hijo, también heredero por medio de Dios.
8 Yet formerly, in your ignorance of God, you became slaves to ‘gods’ which were no gods.
Pero entonces, ciertamente, por no conocer a Dios, ustedes servían como esclavos a los que por naturaleza no son dioses.
9 But now that you have found God — or, rather, have been found by him — how is it that you are turning back to that poor and feeble puerile teaching, to which yet once again you are wanting to become slaves?
Pero ahora, por cuanto conocen a Dios, y más bien, por cuanto fueron conocidos por Él, ¿cómo vuelven otra vez a los débiles y pobres rudimentos, a los cuales quieren otra vez servir como esclavos?
10 You are scrupulous in keeping Days and Months and Seasons and Years!
Se someten escrupulosamente a guardar días, meses, tiempos y años.
11 You make me fear that the labour which I have spent on you may have been wasted.
Temo por ustedes, no sea que, de algún modo, un trabajo duro entre ustedes fue en vano.
12 I entreat you, Brothers, to become like me, as I became like you. You have never done me any wrong.
Les ruego, hermanos, que sean como yo, porque yo también soy como ustedes. No me hicieron agravio.
13 You remember that it was owing to bodily infirmity that on the first occasion I told you the Good News.
Saben que la primera vez me presenté a predicarles las Buenas Noticias por [causa de ]una enfermedad física.
14 And as for what must have tried you in my condition, it did not inspire you with scorn or disgust, but you welcomed me as if I had been an angel of God — or Christ Jesus himself!
Ustedes no me despreciaron ni me rechazaron por la prueba que había en mi cuerpo. Más bien me recibieron como a un ángel de Dios, como a Cristo Jesús.
15 What has become then, of your blessings? For I can bear witness that, had it been possible, you would have torn out your eyes and given them to me!
¿Dónde está su bendición? Porque les doy testimonio de que si hubiera sido posible, se habrían sacado los ojos y me los habrían dado.
16 Am I to think, then, that I have become your enemy by telling you the truth?
¿Me convertí en su enemigo al decirles la verdad?
17 Certain people are seeking your favour, but with no honourable object. No, indeed, they want to isolate you, so that you will have to seek their favour.
Ellos están profundamente inquietos por ustedes, no para bien, sino quieren separarlos para que ustedes mismos estén profundamente preocupados [por ellos].
18 It is always honourable to have your favour sought in an honourable cause, and not only when I am with you, my dear children —
Bueno es estar siempre profundamente preocupado por lo bueno, y no solo al estar presente yo con ustedes.
19 You for whom I am again enduring a mother’s pains, till a likeness to Christ shall have been formed in you.
Hijos míos, por quienes otra vez sufro dolores de parto hasta que Cristo sea formado en ustedes,
20 But I could wish to be with you now and speak in a different tone, for I am perplexed about you.
deseaba más bien estar presente con ustedes y mudar mi tono, porque me asombro de ustedes.
21 Tell me, you who want to be still subject to Law — Why do not you listen to the Law?
Díganme, los que desean estar bajo [la ]Ley: ¿No ponen atención a la Ley?
22 Scripture says that Abraham had two sons, one the child of the slave-woman and the other the child of the free woman.
Porque fue escrito que Abraham tuvo dos hijos: uno de la esclava y uno de la libre.
23 But the child of the slave-woman was born in the course of nature, while the child of the free woman was born in fulfilment of a promise.
El de la esclava ciertamente fue engendrado en conformidad con la naturaleza humana, pero el de la libre, por medio de la promesa.
24 This story may be taken as an allegory. The women stand for two Covenants. One Covenant, given from Mount Sinai, produces a race of slaves and is represented by Hagar
Esto es dicho simbólicamente, porque éstas [mujeres] simbolizan dos pactos: una ciertamente de la Montaña Sinaí, la cual concibe para esclavitud.
25 (The word Hagar meaning in Arabia Mount Sinai) and it ranks with the Jerusalem of to-day, for she and her children are in slavery.
Agar es [la] Montaña Sinaí en Arabia, que corresponde a la Jerusalén de ahora, porque sirve como esclava con sus hijos.
26 But the Jerusalem above is free, and she it is who is our mother.
Pero la Jerusalén de arriba, la cual es nuestra madre, es libre.
27 For Scripture says — ‘Rejoice, thou barren one, who dost never bear, Break into shouts, thou who art never in labour, For many are the children of her who is desolate — aye, more than of her who has a husband.’
Porque está escrito: Regocíjate oh estéril, la que no da a luz. Prorrumpe y clama, la que no sufre dolores de parto. Porque muchos son los hijos de la desamparada, más que los de la que tiene el esposo.
28 As for ourselves, brothers, we, like Isaac, are children born in fulfilment of a promise.
Así que ustedes, hermanos, como Isaac, son hijos de [la] promesa.
29 Yet at that time the child born in the course of nature persecuted the child born by the power of the Spirit; and it is the same now.
Tal como entonces el que fue engendrado según la naturaleza humana perseguía al que fue engendrado según el Espíritu, así también ahora.
30 But what does the passage of Scripture say? ‘Send away the slave-woman and her son; for the slave’s son shall not be co-heir with the son of the free woman.’
Pero ¿qué dice la Escritura? Echa fuera a la esclava y a su hijo, porque de ningún modo heredará el hijo de la esclava con el hijo de la libre.
31 And so, Brothers, we are not children of a slave, but of her who is free.
Por tanto, hermanos, no somos hijos de [la] esclava, sino de la libre.
