< John 1 >

1 The one who expresses [MET] ([God’s character/what God is like]) has always existed (from the beginning [MTY] [of everything/before everything began]). He has always existed with God, and he has God’s nature.
ஆதௌ³ வாத³ ஆஸீத் ஸ ச வாத³ ஈஸ்²வரேண ஸார்த⁴மாஸீத் ஸ வாத³​: ஸ்வயமீஸ்²வர ஏவ|
2 He always existed with God [before] he began [MTY] [to create anything].
ஸ ஆதா³வீஸ்²வரேண ஸஹாஸீத்|
3 He is the one by whom [God] caused everything to exist. He is the one who created absolutely everything [LIT].
தேந ஸர்வ்வம்’ வஸ்து ஸஸ்ரு’ஜே ஸர்வ்வேஷு ஸ்ரு’ஷ்டவஸ்துஷு கிமபி வஸ்து தேநாஸ்ரு’ஷ்டம்’ நாஸ்தி|
4 He is the one who [caused everything to] live. He, who caused us people to live, [revealed to us the truth about God as] a light [MET] [reveals what is in the darkness].
ஸ ஜீவநஸ்யாகார​: , தச்ச ஜீவநம்’ மநுஷ்யாணாம்’ ஜ்யோதி​:
5 People do not want him to reveal [that what they do is evil] [MET], just [like] darkness [is evil]. But [just like] darkness cannot put out light [MET], [evil people have never prevented the one who was like a light from revealing God’s truth] (OR, [evil people have never] understood the [one who was like] a light.)
தஜ்ஜ்யோதிரந்த⁴காரே ப்ரசகாஸே² கிந்த்வந்த⁴காரஸ்தந்ந ஜக்³ராஹ|
6 A man whose name was John was sent by God {God sent a man whose name was John}.
யோஹந் நாமக ஏகோ மநுஜ ஈஸ்²வரேண ப்ரேஷயாஞ்சக்ரே|
7 He came to tell people [about the one who was like] [MET] a light. He came to show that everything that the [one who was like a light] [MET] said was true, in order that he could enable all people to believe [in the one who was like a light].
தத்³வாரா யதா² ஸர்வ்வே விஸ்²வஸந்தி தத³ர்த²ம்’ ஸ தஜ்ஜ்யோதிஷி ப்ரமாணம்’ தா³தும்’ ஸாக்ஷிஸ்வரூபோ பூ⁴த்வாக³மத்,
8 John himself was not the [one who was like a] light [MET]. Instead, he came to tell others about that [one who was like a] light.
ஸ ஸ்வயம்’ தஜ்ஜ்யோதி ர்ந கிந்து தஜ்ஜ்யோதிஷி ப்ரமாணம்’ தா³துமாக³மத்|
9 [While John was doing that], the one who was truly [like] a light was about to show himself to the world. He was the one who enables all people [to know about God, as] a light [MET] enables [people to know what is in the darkness].
ஜக³த்யாக³த்ய ய​: ஸர்வ்வமநுஜேப்⁴யோ தீ³ப்திம்’ த³தா³தி ததே³வ ஸத்யஜ்யோதி​: |
10 Although the one [who was like a light] was [here] on the earth, and although he was the one whom [God] caused to create everything, [most] people [MTY, HYP] did not realize who he [was]. (OR, although he was the one whom [God] caused to create everything, [most] people did not accept him.)
ஸ யஜ்ஜக³த³ஸ்ரு’ஜத் தந்மத்³ய ஏவ ஸ ஆஸீத் கிந்து ஜக³தோ லோகாஸ்தம்’ நாஜாநந்|
11 Although he came to the land that belonged to him [because he created it, most of] his own people, [the Jews], rejected him (OR, did not accept him).
நிஜாதி⁴காரம்’ ஸ ஆக³ச்ச²த் கிந்து ப்ரஜாஸ்தம்’ நாக்³ரு’ஹ்லந்|
12 But those [of us who welcomed him, God] authorized [that we would have a relationship with] him [MET] [like] children [have a relationship with their father]. We were people who believed [that what he said] about himself [MTY] [was true].
ததா²பி யே யே தமக்³ரு’ஹ்லந் அர்தா²த் தஸ்ய நாம்நி வ்யஸ்²வஸந் தேப்⁴ய ஈஸ்²வரஸ்ய புத்ரா ப⁴விதும் அதி⁴காரம் அத³தா³த்|
13 We became [like God’s children], not because our ancestors [belonged to God], or because of someone’s sexual desires, nor because some man desired to have children like himself. Instead, we were caused by God {God caused us} to become [like] his children.
தேஷாம்’ ஜநி​: ஸோ²ணிதாந்ந ஸா²ரீரிகாபி⁴லாஷாந்ந மாநவாநாமிச்சா²தோ ந கிந்த்வீஸ்²வராத³ப⁴வத்|
14 The one who expresses [MET] ([God’s character/what God is like]) became a human being, and he lived among us [for a while]. As a result, we saw how wonderful he is. He came from [God] his father, and there was no other person as wonderful as he. He was wonderful because he always acted (kindly toward us/in ways we did not deserve), and he always [spoke] truthfully to us [about God].
ஸ வாதோ³ மநுஷ்யரூபேணாவதீர்ய்ய ஸத்யதாநுக்³ரஹாப்⁴யாம்’ பரிபூர்ண​: ஸந் ஸார்த⁴ம் அஸ்மாபி⁴ ர்ந்யவஸத் தத​: பிதுரத்³விதீயபுத்ரஸ்ய யோக்³யோ யோ மஹிமா தம்’ மஹிமாநம்’ தஸ்யாபஸ்²யாம|
15 [One day] when John was telling people about him, [he saw Jesus]. Then he shouted to them, “I told you [previously] that someone will come later who is more important than I am, since he existed [long] before me. This [is the man I was talking about]!”
ததோ யோஹநபி ப்ரசார்ய்ய ஸாக்ஷ்யமித³ம்’ த³த்தவாந் யோ மம பஸ்²சாத்³ ஆக³மிஷ்யதி ஸ மத்தோ கு³ருதர​: ; யதோ மத்பூர்வ்வம்’ ஸ வித்³யமாந ஆஸீத்; யத³ர்த²ம் அஹம்’ ஸாக்ஷ்யமித³ம் அதா³ம்’ ஸ ஏஷ​: |
16 We have all benefited very much from what he has done. Again and again, he has acted in kind way toward us in ways we did not deserve.
அபரஞ்ச தஸ்ய பூர்ணதாயா வயம்’ ஸர்வ்வே க்ரமஸ²​: க்ரமஸோ²நுக்³ரஹம்’ ப்ராப்தா​: |
17 Moses proclaimed [God’s] laws [to our ancestors]. But what Jesus Christ did for us [was much better]. He acted in kindness toward us in ways we did not deserve and told us the truth [about God].
மூஸாத்³வாரா வ்யவஸ்தா² த³த்தா கிந்த்வநுக்³ரஹ​: ஸத்யத்வஞ்ச யீஸு²க்²ரீஷ்டத்³வாரா ஸமுபாதிஷ்ட²தாம்’|
18 No one has ever seen God. But God’s only Son, [Jesus], who has always had a very close relationship with God, has told us about God.
கோபி மநுஜ ஈஸ்²வரம்’ கதா³பி நாபஸ்²யத் கிந்து பிது​: க்ரோட³ஸ்தோ²(அ)த்³விதீய​: புத்ரஸ்தம்’ ப்ரகாஸ²யத்|
19 The Jewish [leaders] [SYN] in Jerusalem [city] sent some [Jewish] priests and (Levites/men who worked in the temple) to where John was, to ask him some questions. They said to him, “What do you [claim about] yourself?”
த்வம்’ க​: ? இதி வாக்யம்’ ப்ரேஷ்டும்’ யதா³ யிஹூதீ³யலோகா யாஜகாந் லேவிலோகாம்’ஸ்²ச யிரூஸா²லமோ யோஹந​: ஸமீபே ப்ரேஷயாமாஸு​: ,
20 So John told them the truth, and he told them clearly [DOU]. He said, “[I] am not (the Messiah/God’s chosen king)!”
ததா³ ஸ ஸ்வீக்ரு’தவாந் நாபஹ்நூதவாந் நாஹம் அபி⁴ஷிக்த இத்யங்கீ³க்ரு’தவாந்|
21 Then they asked him, “Then what [do you say about yourself]? Are you [the prophet] Elijah [that was prophesied to return] {([someone/another prophet]) [prophesied would return]} [before the Messiah]?” He replied, “No, [I] am not.” Then they asked him, “Are you the prophet [like Moses that] ([we are waiting for/God promised to send])?” He replied, “No.”
ததா³ தே(அ)ப்ரு’ச்ச²ந் தர்ஹி கோ ப⁴வாந்? கிம்’ ஏலிய​: ? ஸோவத³த் ந; ததஸ்தே(அ)ப்ரு’ச்ச²ந் தர்ஹி ப⁴வாந் ஸ ப⁴விஷ்யத்³வாதீ³? ஸோவத³த் நாஹம்’ ஸ​: |
22 So they asked him, “Then who do you [claim to be]? [Tell us] so that we can [go back and] report to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?”
ததா³ தே(அ)ப்ரு’ச்ச²ந் தர்ஹி ப⁴வாந் க​: ? வயம்’ க³த்வா ப்ரேரகாந் த்வயி கிம்’ வக்ஷ்யாம​: ? ஸ்வஸ்மிந் கிம்’ வத³ஸி?
23 John replied, “[I] am the one [the prophet Isaiah said] would proclaim [this new message] loudly [to the people who would pass by] in this desolate area: ‘Prepare [yourselves to receive] the Lord when he comes [MET], [just like people prepare] a road [for an important official].
ததா³ ஸோவத³த்| பரமேஸ²ஸ்ய பந்தா²நம்’ பரிஷ்குருத ஸர்வ்வத​: | இதீத³ம்’ ப்ராந்தரே வாக்யம்’ வத³த​: கஸ்யசித்³ரவ​: | கதா²மிமாம்’ யஸ்மிந் யிஸ²யியோ ப⁴விஷ்யத்³வாதீ³ லிகி²தவாந் ஸோஹம்|
24 Some of those people [who were questioning] John were ones who had been sent by the Pharisee [religious group] {whom the Pharisee [religious group] had sent}.
யே ப்ரேஷிதாஸ்தே பி²ரூஸி²லோகா​: |
25 They asked John, “Since [you say] you are not the Messiah, nor [the prophet] Elijah, nor the prophet [like Moses], [what authority] do you have? [Furthermore], why are you baptizing [Jews, treating them as though they were non-Jews who wanted to become Jews]?”
ததா³ தே(அ)ப்ரு’ச்ச²ந் யதி³ நாபி⁴ஷிக்தோஸி ஏலியோஸி ந ஸ ப⁴விஷ்யத்³வாத்³யபி நாஸி ச, தர்ஹி லோகாந் மஜ்ஜயஸி குத​: ?
26 John replied, “I am [just] baptizing people with water [to prepare them to welcome the Messiah]. But [right now] someone is among you whom you people do not know.
ததோ யோஹந் ப்ரத்யவோசத், தோயே(அ)ஹம்’ மஜ்ஜயாமீதி ஸத்யம்’ கிந்து யம்’ யூயம்’ ந ஜாநீத² தாத்³ரு’ஸ² ஏகோ ஜநோ யுஷ்மாகம்’ மத்⁴ய உபதிஷ்ட²தி|
27 He [will preach to you] after I [am gone]. [He is so important that] I am not worthy to [serve him as a slave] [MET] [by] untying his sandals.”
ஸ மத்பஸ்²சாத்³ ஆக³தோபி மத்பூர்வ்வம்’ வர்த்தமாந ஆஸீத் தஸ்ய பாது³காப³ந்த⁴நம்’ மோசயிதுமபி நாஹம்’ யோக்³யோஸ்மி|
28 Those things happened at [a place called] Bethany, on the [east] side of the Jordan [River], where John was baptizing people.
யர்த்³த³நநத்³யா​: பாரஸ்த²பை³த²பா³ராயாம்’ யஸ்மிந்ஸ்தா²நே யோஹநமஜ்ஜயத் தஸ்மிந ஸ்தா²நே ஸர்வ்வமேதத்³ அக⁴டத|
29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him. He said to the people, “Look! Here is the [man whom] God [has appointed to be a sacrifice] [MET], [like] the lambs [that the people of Israel sacrificed! By sacrificing himself] he will [make it possible for everyone in] the world to be no longer [guilty for having] sinned.
பரே(அ)ஹநி யோஹந் ஸ்வநிகடமாக³ச்ச²ந்தம்’ யிஸு²ம்’ விலோக்ய ப்ராவோசத் ஜக³த​: பாபமோசகம் ஈஸ்²வரஸ்ய மேஷஸா²வகம்’ பஸ்²யத|
30 He is the one about whom I said [before], ‘Someone will come later who is more important than I am, since he existed [long] before me.’
யோ மம பஸ்²சாதா³க³மிஷ்யதி ஸ மத்தோ கு³ருதர​: , யதோ ஹேதோர்மத்பூர்வ்வம்’ ஸோ(அ)வர்த்தத யஸ்மிந்நஹம்’ கதா²மிமாம்’ கதி²தவாந் ஸ ஏவாயம்’|
31 I myself did not [previously] recognize that he [was the Messiah]. But [now I know who he is], and I have baptized people with water to enable [you people of] Israel to recognize who he is.”
அபரம்’ நாஹமேநம்’ ப்ரத்யபி⁴ஜ்ஞாதவாந் கிந்து இஸ்ராயேல்லோகா ஏநம்’ யதா² பரிசிந்வந்தி தத³பி⁴ப்ராயேணாஹம்’ ஜலே மஜ்ஜயிதுமாக³ச்ச²ம்|
32 John spoke clearly [what God had shown him about Jesus]. He said, “I saw [God’s] Spirit as he was descending from heaven in the form of a dove. The Spirit remained on Jesus.
புநஸ்²ச யோஹநபரமேகம்’ ப்ரமாணம்’ த³த்வா கதி²தவாந் விஹாயஸ​: கபோதவத்³ அவதரந்தமாத்மாநம் அஸ்யோபர்ய்யவதிஷ்ட²ந்தம்’ ச த்³ரு’ஷ்டவாநஹம்|
33 I myself did not know [previously] that he [was the Messiah]. However, [God] sent me to baptize people with water, [people who said they wanted to turn from their sinful ways. While I was doing that], God told me, ‘The man on whom you will see my Spirit descend and remain is the one who will put the Holy Spirit within you [(pl) to truly change your lives].’
நாஹமேநம்’ ப்ரத்யபி⁴ஜ்ஞாதவாந் இதி ஸத்யம்’ கிந்து யோ ஜலே மஜ்ஜயிதும்’ மாம்’ ப்ரைரயத் ஸ ஏவேமாம்’ கதா²மகத²யத் யஸ்யோபர்ய்யாத்மாநம் அவதரந்தம் அவதிஷ்ட²ந்தஞ்ச த்³ரக்ஷயஸி ஸஏவ பவித்ரே ஆத்மநி மஜ்ஜயிஷ்யதி|
34 I saw [the Spirit descend on him], and I tell you that he is (the Son of God/the person who is both God and man).”
அவஸ்தந்நிரீக்ஷ்யாயம் ஈஸ்²வரஸ்ய தநய இதி ப்ரமாணம்’ த³தா³மி|
35 The next day John was at the same place again (with two of us/with two of his disciples).
பரே(அ)ஹநி யோஹந் த்³வாப்⁴யாம்’ ஸி²ஷ்யாப்⁴யாம்’ ஸார்த்³தே⁴ம்’ திஷ்ட²ந்
36 When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, “Look! There is the man God [has appointed to be a sacrifice, like] the lambs [MET] [the people of Israel have sacrificed!]”
யிஸு²ம்’ க³ச்ச²ந்தம்’ விலோக்ய க³தி³தவாந், ஈஸ்²வரஸ்ய மேஷஸா²வகம்’ பஸ்²யதம்’|
37 (When we/those two disciples) heard John say this, we/they went with Jesus.
இமாம்’ கதா²ம்’ ஸ்²ருத்வா த்³வௌ ஸி²ஷ்யௌ யீஸோ²​: பஸ்²சாத்³ ஈயது​: |
38 Jesus turned around and saw us/them coming behind him. So he asked us/them, “What do you want?” We/They replied, “Teacher, [tell us] where you are staying, [because we want to talk with you].”
ததோ யீஸு²​: பராவ்ரு’த்ய தௌ பஸ்²சாத்³ ஆக³ச்ச²ந்தௌ த்³ரு’ஷ்ட்வா ப்ரு’ஷ்டவாந் யுவாம்’ கிம்’ க³வேஸ²யத²​: ? தாவப்ரு’ச்ச²தாம்’ ஹே ரப்³பி³ அர்தா²த் ஹே கு³ரோ ப⁴வாந் குத்ர திஷ்ட²தி?
39 He replied, “Come [with me], and you will see [where I am staying]!” So we/they went with him and saw where he was staying. We/They stayed with him until about 4 o’clock (OR, from about 4 PM until the next day).
தத​: ஸோவாதி³த் ஏத்ய பஸ்²யதம்’| ததோ தி³வஸஸ்ய த்ரு’தீயப்ரஹரஸ்ய க³தத்வாத் தௌ தத்³தி³நம்’ தஸ்ய ஸங்கே³(அ)ஸ்தா²தாம்’|
40 (One of us/One of the two men) who heard what John had said and who went with Jesus was Andrew, Simon Peter’s [younger] brother.
யௌ த்³வௌ யோஹநோ வாக்யம்’ ஸ்²ருத்வா யிஸோ²​: பஸ்²சாத்³ ஆக³மதாம்’ தயோ​: ஸி²மோந்பிதரஸ்ய ப்⁴ராதா ஆந்த்³ரிய​:
41 [After Andrew left Jesus], the first thing he did was to find his own [older] brother Simon and say to him, “We have found the Messiah!”
ஸ இத்வா ப்ரத²மம்’ நிஜஸோத³ரம்’ ஸி²மோநம்’ ஸாக்ஷாத்ப்ராப்ய கதி²தவாந் வயம்’ க்²ரீஷ்டம் அர்தா²த் அபி⁴ஷிக்தபுருஷம்’ ஸாக்ஷாத்க்ரு’தவந்த​: |
42 Then he took Simon to Jesus. Jesus looked intently at him, and then said, “You are Simon. Your father’s name is John. You will be given {[I] will give you} the name Cephas.” [Cephas is an Aramaic name that means ‘solid rock’. It] means [the same in Greek as the name] Peter.
பஸ்²சாத் ஸ தம்’ யிஸோ²​: ஸமீபம் ஆநயத்| ததா³ யீஸு²ஸ்தம்’ த்³ரு’ஷ்ட்வாவத³த் த்வம்’ யூநஸ​: புத்ர​: ஸி²மோந் கிந்து த்வந்நாமதே⁴யம்’ கைபா²​: வா பிதர​: அர்தா²த் ப்ரஸ்தரோ ப⁴விஷ்யதி|
43 The next day [Jesus] decided to leave [the Jordan River valley]. He went to Galilee [district] and (OR, on the way there he) found a man named Philip. Jesus said to him, “Come with me!”
பரே(அ)ஹநி யீஸௌ² கா³லீலம்’ க³ந்தும்’ நிஸ்²சிதசேதஸி ஸதி பி²லிபநாமாநம்’ ஜநம்’ ஸாக்ஷாத்ப்ராப்யாவோசத் மம பஸ்²சாத்³ ஆக³ச்ச²|
44 Philip and Andrew and Peter were all from Bethsaida [town].
பை³த்ஸைதா³நாம்நி யஸ்மிந் க்³ராமே பிதராந்த்³ரியயோர்வாஸ ஆஸீத் தஸ்மிந் க்³ராமே தஸ்ய பி²லிபஸ்ய வஸதிராஸீத்|
45 Then Philip [searched for] Nathaniel and found him, and said to him, “We have met [the Messiah], the one Moses [wrote about]! The prophets also [prophesied that he would come]. He is Jesus, from Nazareth [town]. His father’s name is Joseph.”
பஸ்²சாத் பி²லிபோ நித²நேலம்’ ஸாக்ஷாத்ப்ராப்யாவத³த் மூஸா வ்யவஸ்தா² க்³ரந்தே² ப⁴விஷ்யத்³வாதி³நாம்’ க்³ரந்தே²ஷு ச யஸ்யாக்²யாநம்’ லிகி²தமாஸ்தே தம்’ யூஷப²​: புத்ரம்’ நாஸரதீயம்’ யீஸு²ம்’ ஸாக்ஷாத்³ அகார்ஷ்ம வயம்’|
46 Nathaniel replied, “Nazareth? (Nothing good can come from [such an unimportant place]!/Can anything good come from [such an unimportant place]?) [RHQ]” Philip replied, “Come and see!”
ததா³ நித²நேல் கதி²தவாந் நாஸரந்நக³ராத கிம்’ கஸ்²சிது³த்தம உத்பந்தும்’ ஸ²க்நோதி? தத​: பி²லிபோ (அ)வோசத் ஏத்ய பஸ்²ய|
47 When Jesus saw Nathaniel approaching, he said about Nathaniel, “Here is an example of a good Israelite! He never deceives anyone!”
அபரஞ்ச யீஸு²​: ஸ்வஸ்ய ஸமீபம்’ தம் ஆக³ச்ச²ந்தம்’ த்³ரு’ஷ்ட்வா வ்யாஹ்ரு’தவாந், பஸ்²யாயம்’ நிஷ்கபட​: ஸத்ய இஸ்ராயேல்லோக​: |
48 Nathaniel asked him, “How do you know what I [am like]?” Jesus replied, “I saw you before Philip called you, when you were [by yourself] under the fig tree.”
தத​: ஸோவத³த்³, ப⁴வாந் மாம்’ கத²ம்’ ப்ரத்யபி⁴ஜாநாதி? யீஸு²ரவாதீ³த் பி²லிபஸ்ய ஆஹ்வாநாத் பூர்வ்வம்’ யதா³ த்வமுடு³ம்ப³ரஸ்ய தரோர்மூலே(அ)ஸ்தா²ஸ்ததா³ த்வாமத³ர்ஸ²ம்|
49 Then Nathaniel declared, “Teacher, you [must be] (the Son of God/the person who is both God and man)! You are the King of Israel [we have been waiting for]!”
நித²நேல் அசகத²த், ஹே கு³ரோ ப⁴வாந் நிதாந்தம் ஈஸ்²வரஸ்ய புத்ரோஸி, ப⁴வாந் இஸ்ராயேல்வம்’ஸ²ஸ்ய ராஜா|
50 Jesus replied to him, “You [RHQ] believe [those things about me] because I told you I saw you when you were under the fig tree. [I was able to see you supernaturally even though I was far away from you]. But you will see [me do] things that are more surprising than that!”
ததோ யீஸு² ர்வ்யாஹரத், த்வாமுடு³ம்ப³ரஸ்ய பாத³பஸ்ய மூலே த்³ரு’ஷ்டவாநாஹம்’ மமைதஸ்மாத்³வாக்யாத் கிம்’ த்வம்’ வ்யஸ்²வஸீ​: ? ஏதஸ்மாத³ப்யாஸ்²சர்ய்யாணி கார்ய்யாணி த்³ரக்ஷ்யஸி|
51 Then Jesus said to him, “This is the absolute truth: [Just like what your ancestor Jacob saw long ago in a vision], some day you [(pl)] will see heaven opened up, and you will see God’s angels ascending from me and descending on me, the one who came from heaven.”
அந்யச்சாவாதீ³த்³ யுஷ்மாநஹம்’ யதா²ர்த²ம்’ வதா³மி, இத​: பரம்’ மோசிதே மேக⁴த்³வாரே தஸ்மாந்மநுஜஸூநுநா ஈஸ்²வரஸ்ய தூ³தக³ணம் அவரோஹந்தமாரோஹந்தஞ்ச த்³ரக்ஷ்யத²|
