1 Samuel 5
1 After the army of the Philistia people-group captured God’s sacred chest in Ebenezer [town], they took it to Ashdod [which is one of their biggest cities].
Sau khi cướp được Hòm Giao Ước của Đức Chúa Trời, người Phi-li-tin đem Hòm từ Ê-bên-ê-xe về Ách-đốt.
2 They carried it into the temple of [their god] Dagon, and placed it alongside a statue of Dagon.
Họ đặt Hòm Giao Ước của Đức Chúa Trời trong miếu thờ thần Đa-gôn, bên cạnh tượng thần này.
3 But early the next morning, when the people of Ashdod [went to see it, they saw that] the statue had fallen on its face in front of Yahweh’s sacred chest! So they set the statue up in its place again.
Sáng sớm hôm sau, khi dân thành Ách-đốt thức dậy, thấy tượng Đa-gôn nằm sấp dưới đất trước Hòm Giao Ước của Chúa Hằng Hữu! Họ dựng tượng lại vào chỗ cũ.
4 But the following morning, [they saw that] it had fallen down in front of the sacred chest again. But this time, the statue’s head and hands had broken off, and were lying in the doorway. Only its body remained intact/unbroken.
Nhưng sáng hôm sau, họ lại thấy Đa-gôn nằm mọp dưới đất trước Hòm Giao Ước của Chúa Hằng Hữu. Lần này, đầu và hai tay đứt lìa, văng ra tận ngưỡng cửa, chỉ còn cái thân nằm đó.
5 That is the reason that since that time, the priests of Dagon and everyone else who enters the temple of Dagon in Ashdod do not step on the doorsill [where the hands and head of Dagon fell].
Vì thế, cho đến ngày nay, các tế sư của Đa-gôn và tất cả những người vào miếu thần này đều tránh không giẫm lên ngưỡng cửa của miếu Đa-gôn tại Ách-đốt.
6 Then Yahweh [SYN] powerfully caused the people of Ashdod and the people who lived in nearby villages to have (a very great plague/serious illness) of tumors.
Chúa Hằng Hữu ra tay trừng trị dân thành Ách-đốt và dân các miền phụ cận, khiến họ đau đớn vì mắc bệnh trĩ.
7 The men of Ashdod realized why this was happening, and they cried out, “The god of the Israeli people is punishing us and is also punishing our god Dagon. So we cannot allow the sacred chest of the god of the Israelis to remain here!”
Thấy thế, người Ách-đốt nói: “Hòm Giao Ước của Đức Chúa Trời của Ít-ra-ên không thể ở lại đây được nữa, vì Ngài đang trừng phạt chúng ta và thần Đa-gôn chúng ta.”
8 They summoned the five kings of the Philistia people-group, and asked them, “What should we do with the sacred chest of the god of the Israelis?” The kings replied, “Take the sacred chest to Gath [city].” So they moved it to Gath.
Vậy, họ mời các lãnh đạo Phi-li-tin đến và hỏi: “Chúng ta phải làm gì với Hòm Giao Ước của Đức Chúa Trời của Ít-ra-ên?” Các nhà lãnh đạo đáp: “Đem Hòm Giao Ước đến Gát.” Và họ đem Hòm Giao Ước của Đức Chúa Trời Ít-ra-ên đến Gát.
9 But after they took it to Gath, Yahweh powerfully struck the people of that city also, with the result that many men, including young men and old men, got tumors on their skin. Then the people became very afraid.
Nhưng khi Hòm Giao Ước đến Gát, Chúa Hằng Hữu lại ra tay trừng trị dân thành này, cả già lẫn trẻ đều bị bênh trĩ, dân trong thành vô cùng hoảng sợ.
10 So they took the sacred chest to Ekron [city]. But when the men carried the sacred chest into Ekron, the people there cried out, “Why are you bringing the sacred chest of the God of the Israelis into our city [RHQ]? [By doing that] you will cause us and the rest of our people to die!”
Vậy họ đem Hòm Giao Ước đến Éc-rôn, nhưng khi Hòm Giao Ước vừa đến, dân thành Éc-rôn la hoảng lên: “Người ta đem Hòm Giao Ước của Đức Chúa Trời của Ít-ra-ên đến đây để giết dân ta!”
11 The people were terrified/in panic because [they knew that] God was starting to punish them severely. So they summoned the [five] kings of the Philistia people-group again, and [pleaded with them], saying, “Take this sacred chest of the god of the Israelis back to its own place! If you do not do that quickly, we will all die!”
Dân chúng vội mời các lãnh đạo Phi-li-tin họp lại và nài nỉ: “Xin đem trả Hòm Giao Ước về cho Ít-ra-ên, nếu không, dân thành chúng tôi bị diệt mất.” Vì Đức Chúa Trời đã bắt đầu ra tay trừng phạt người Éc-rôn nặng nề, làm họ vô cùng khiếp đảm.
12 Some of the people in Ekron had already died, and the rest of the people were suffering because of tumors on their skin. So they all cried out to their gods [MTY] [to help them].
Những ai chưa chết đều bị bệnh trĩ nặng; tiếng kêu la thấu trời.
