1 The sons of Jacob were Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Zebulun,
These [are] sons of Israel: Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah, Issachar, and Zebulun,
2 Dan, Joseph, Benjamin, Naphtali, Gad, and Asher.
Dan, Joseph, and Benjamin, Naphtali, Gad, and Asher.
3 Judah’s sons were Er, Onan, and Shelah. Their mother was the daughter of Shua from the Canaan people-group. [When] Judah’s oldest son Er [grew up, he] did something that Yahweh considered to be very wicked, so Yahweh caused him to die.
Sons of Judah: Er, and Onan, and Shelah, three have been born to him of a daughter of Shua the Canaanitess. And Er, firstborn of Judah, is evil in the eyes of YHWH, and He puts him to death.
4 Judah and his daughter-in-law Tamar had [twin boys named] Perez and Zerah. So altogether Judah had five sons.
And his daughter-in-law Tamar has borne Perez and Zerah to him. All the sons of Judah [are] five.
5 The sons of Perez were Hezron and Hamul.
Sons of Perez: Hezron, and Hamul.
6 Zerah had five sons: Zimri, Ethan, Heman, Calcol, and Darda (OR, Dara).
And sons of Zerah: Zimri, and Ethan, and Heman, and Calcol, and Dara; all of them five.
7 [One of the sons of Zimri was Carmi]. Carmi’s son Achan (OR, Achar) caused the people of Israel to experience much trouble, because he stole some of the things that had been devoted [to Yahweh to be destroyed].
And sons of Carmi: Achar, troubler of Israel, who trespassed in the devoted thing.
8 Ethan’s son was Azariah.
And sons of Ethan: Azariah.
9 Hezron’s sons were Jerahmeel, Ram, and Caleb (OR, Chelubai).
And sons of Hezron who were born to him: Jerahmeel, and Ram, and Chelubai.
10 Ram was the father of Amminadab, and Amminadab was the father of Nahshon. Nahshon was a leader of the tribe of Judah.
And Ram begot Amminadab, and Amminadab begot Nahshon, prince of the sons of Judah;
11 Nahshon was the father of Salmon, who was the father of Boaz.
and Nahshon begot Salma, and Salma begot Boaz,
12 Boaz was the father of Obed, and Obed was the father of Jesse.
and Boaz begot Obed, and Obed begot Jesse;
13 Jesse’s oldest son was Eliab. His other sons were Abinadab, Shimea,
and Jesse begot his firstborn Eliab, and Abinadab the second, and Shimea the third,
14 Nethanel, Raddai,
Nethaneel the fourth, Raddai the fifth,
15 Ozem, and the youngest was David.
Ozem the sixth, David the seventh,
16 Their sisters were Zeruiah and Abigail. Zeruiah’s three sons were Abishai, Joab, and Asahel.
and their sisters Zeruiah and Abigail. And sons of Zeruiah: Abishai, and Joab, and Asah-El—three.
17 Abigail’s husband was Jether, a descendant of Ishmael, and their son was Amasa.
And Abigail has borne Amasa, and the father of Amasa [is] Jether the Ishmaelite.
18 Hezron’s younger son Caleb had two wives. One of them, Azubah, gave birth to [three] sons: Jesher, Shobab, and Ardon.
And Caleb son of Hezron has begotten Azubah, Isshah, and Jerioth; and these [are] her sons: Jesher, and Shobab, and Ardon.
19 When Azubah died, Caleb married Ephrath. Their son was Hur.
And Azubah dies, and Caleb takes Ephrath to himself, and she bears Hur to him.
20 Hur was the father of Uri, and Uri was the father of Bezalel.
And Hur begot Uri, and Uri begot Bezaleel.
21 When Hezron was 60 years old, he married [EUP] Makir’s daughter, who was the sister of Gilead. The son of Hezron and Makir was Segub.
And afterward Hezron has gone in to a daughter of Machir father of Gilead, and he has taken her, and he [is] a son of sixty years, and she bears Segub to him.
22 Segub was the father of Jair. Jair’s [army] controlled twenty-three cities in the region ruled by Gilead.
And Segub begot Jair, and he has twenty-three cities in the land of Gilead,
23 But [the armies of] Geshur and Aram captured those towns controlled by Jair. They also captured Kenath [city] and the nearby towns; altogether they captured 60 towns. The people who lived there were all descendants of Makir, the father of Gilead.
and he takes Geshur and Aram, the small villages of Jair, from them, with Kenath and its small towns, sixty cities—all these [belonged to] the sons of Machir father of Gilead.
24 Shortly after Hezron died in Caleb-Ephrath [town], his widow Abijah had a son Asshur; Asshur started Tekoa [town].
And after the death of Hezron in Caleb-Ephratah, then the wife of Hezron, Abijah, even bears to him Asshur, father of Tekoa.
25 Hezron’s oldest son was Jerahmeel. His sons were Ram, Bunah, Oren, Ozem, and Ahijah. Jerahmeel’s oldest son was Ram.
And sons of Jerahmeel, firstborn of Hezron, are: the firstborn Ram, and Bunah, and Oren, and Ozem, Ahijah.
26 Jerahmeel had another wife named Atarah. Their son was Onam.
And Jerahmeel has another wife, and her name [is] Atarah, she [is] mother of Onam.
27 The sons of Ram, Jerahmeel’s oldest son, were Maaz, Jamin, and Eker.
And sons of Ram, firstborn of Jerahmeel, are Maaz, and Jamin, and Eker.
28 Onam’s sons were Shammai and Jada. Shammai’s sons were Nadab and Abishur.
And sons of Onam are Shammai and Jada. And sons of Shammai: Nadab and Abishur.
29 Abishur’s wife was Abihail. The sons of Abishur and Abihail were Ahban and Molid.
And the name of the wife of Abishur [is] Abihail, and she bears Ahban and Molid to him.
30 Nadab’s sons were Seled and Appaim. Seled did not have any children.
And sons of Nadab: Seled and Appaim; and Seled dies without sons.
31 Appaim’s son was Ishi; Ishi’s son was Sheshan. One of Sheshan’s daughters was Ahlai.
And sons of Appaim: Ishi. And sons of Ishi: Sheshan. And sons of Sheshan: Ahlai.
32 Shammai’s [younger] brother was Jada. Jada’s sons were Jether and Jonathan. Jether did not have any children.
And sons of Jada, brother of Shammai: Jether and Jonathan; and Jether dies without sons.
33 Jonathan’s sons were Peleth and Zaza. Those were the descendants of Jerahmeel.
And sons of Jonathan: Peleth and Zaza. These were sons of Jerahmeel.
34 Sheshan did not have any sons; he had only daughters. He had a servant from Egypt whose name was Jarha.
And Sheshan had no sons, but daughters, and Sheshan has a servant, an Egyptian, and his name [is] Jarha,
35 Sheshan allowed his daughter to marry Jarha, and their son was Attai.
and Sheshan gives his daughter to his servant Jarha for a wife, and she bears Attai to him;
36 Attai was the father of Nathan. Nathan was the father of Zabad.
and Attai begot Nathan, and Nathan begot Zabad,
37 Zabad was the father of Ephlal. Ephlal was the father of Obed.
and Zabad begot Ephlal, and Ephlal begot Obed,
38 Obed was the father of Jehu. Jehu was the father of Azariah.
and Obed begot Jehu,
39 Azariah was the father of Helez. Helez was the father of Eleasah.
and Jehu begot Azariah, and Azariah begot Helez, and Helez begot Eleasah,
40 Eleasah was the father of Sismai. Sismai was the father of Shallum.
and Eleasah begot Sismai, and Sismai begot Shallum,
41 Shallum was the father of Jekamiah. And Jekamiah was the father of Elishama.
and Shallum begot Jekamiah, and Jekamiah begot Elishama.
42 Jerahmeel’s [younger] brother was Caleb. Caleb’s oldest son was Mesha. Mesha was the father of Ziph. Ziph was the father of Mareshah. Mareshah was the father of Hebron.
And sons of Caleb brother of Jerahmeel: Mesha his firstborn, he [is] father of Ziph; and sons of Mareshah: Abi-Hebron.
43 Hebron’s sons were Korah, Tappuah, Rekem, and Shema.
And sons of Hebron: Korah, and Tappuah, and Rekem, and Shema.
44 Shema was the father of Raham. Raham was the father of Jorkeam. Rekem was the father of Shammai.
And Shema begot Raham father of Jorkoam, and Rekem begot Shammai.
45 Shammai was the father of Maon. Maon was the father of Beth-Zur.
And a son of Shammai [is] Maon, and Maon [is] father of Beth-Zur.
46 Caleb had a slave wife who was named Ephah. Caleb and Ephah’s sons were Haran, Moza, and Gazez. Haran had a son whom he also named Gazez.
And Ephah concubine of Caleb bore Haran, and Moza, and Gazez; and Haran begot Gazez.
47 Ephah’s father was Jahdai. Jahdai was the father of [six sons: ] Regem, Jotham, Geshan, Pelet, Ephah, and Shaaph.
And sons of Jahdai: Regem, and Jotham, and Geshem, and Pelet, and Ephah, and Shaaph.
48 Caleb had another slave wife whose name was Maacah. Caleb and Maacah’s sons were Sheber, Tirhanah,
The concubine of Caleb, Maachah, bore Sheber and Tirhanah;
49 Shaaph, and Sheva. Shaaph was the father of Madmannah. Sheva was the father of Macbenah and Gibea. Caleb’s daughter was Acsah.
and she bears Shaaph father of Madmannah, Sheva father of Machbenah, and father of Gibea; and a daughter of Caleb [is] Achsa.
50 These people were also descendants of Caleb: [Caleb had another wife whose name was] Ephrathah. Their oldest son was Hur. Hur’s sons were Shobal, Salma, and Hareph. Shobal started Kiriath-Jearim [city]. Salma started Bethlehem [town]. Hareph started Beth-Gader [town].
These were sons of Caleb son of Hur, firstborn of Ephrathah: Shobal father of Kirjath-Jearim,
Salma father of Beth-Lehem, Hareph father of Beth-Gader.
52 Shobal’s descendants were Haroeh, and half of the Manahath people-group.
And there are sons to Shobal father of Kirjath-Jearim: Haroeh, half of the Menuhothite;
53 His descendants also included these clans that lived in Kiriath-Jearim: Ithri, Put, Shumath, and Mishra. The Zorath and Eshtaol clans were descendants of the Mishra clan.
and the families of Kirjath-Jearim: the Ithrite, and the Puhite, and the Shumathite, and the Mishraite. The Zorathite and the Eshtaolite went out from these.
54 Salma’s descendants in Bethlehem were the Netophath clan, the Atroth-Beth-Joab clan, the other half of the Manahath clan, and the Zor clan.
Sons of Salma: Beth-Lehem, and the Netophathite, Atroth, Beth-Joab, and half of the Menuhothite, the Zorite;
55 Salma’s descendants also included the families at Jabez [town] who wrote and copied important documents. These were the Tirath clan, the Shimeath clan, and the Sucath clan. They were all from the Ken people-group who came from Hammath [city], and who had married members of the family [MTY] of Rechab.
and the families of the scribes, the inhabitants of Jabez: Tirathites, Shimeathites, Suchathites. They [are] the Kenites, those coming of Hammath father of the house of Rechab.
