Acts 25

1 Three days after arriving in the province, Festus went up to Jerusalem from Caesarea,

Festus, étant donc arrivé dans sa province, monta trois jours après de Césarée à Jérusalem.

2 where the high priest and prominent Jewish men presented their case against Paul.

Les chefs des prêtres et les principaux d'entre les Juifs vinrent lui porter plainte contre Paul. Avec beaucoup d'instances

3 Asking for a favor against Paul, they urged Festus to summon him to Jerusalem, because they were planning an ambush to kill him on the way.

ils lui demandèrent comme une faveur, dans un but hostile à l'Apôtre, qu'il le fît transférer à Jérusalem; ils préparaient un guet-apens pour le faire périr en route.

4 But Festus replied that Paul was being kept in custody in Caesarea, and that he himself was about to go there shortly.

Festus répondit que Paul était gardé à Césarée et que lui-même y retournerait sous peu.

5 “So,” he said, “let those among you who are influential go down with me, and if there is any fault in this man, they can bring charges against him.”

" Que ceux d'entre vous, ajouta-t-il, qui ont qualité pour cela, descendent avec moi, et s'il y a des charges contre cet homme, qu'ils l'accusent. "

6 After staying among them for more than ten days, Festus went down to Caesarea. The next day he sat on the judgment seat and ordered Paul to be brought in.

Après avoir seulement passé huit ou dix jours à Jérusalem, Festus descendit à Césarée. Le lendemain, ayant pris place sur son tribunal, il fit amener Paul.

7 When Paul arrived, the Jews who had come down from Jerusalem stood around him, bringing many serious charges against him that they could not prove.

Quand on l'eut amené, les Juifs venus de Jérusalem l'entourèrent, en portant contre lui de nombreuses et graves accusations, qu'ils ne pouvaient prouver.

8 Then Paul said in his own defense, “Neither against the law of the Jews, nor against the temple, nor against Caesar have I committed any offense.”

Paul dit pour sa défense: " Je n'ai rien fait de répréhensible, ni contre la loi des Juifs, ni contre le temple, ni contre César. "

9 But Festus, wishing to gain favor with the Jews, responded to Paul, “Are yoʋ willing to go up to Jerusalem and stand trial before me there on these charges?”

Festus, qui voulait faire plaisir aux Juifs, dit à Paul: " Veux-tu monter à Jérusalem et y être jugé sur ces griefs en ma présence? "

10 Paul said, “I am standing before the judgment seat of Caesar, where I ought to stand trial. I have done the Jews no wrong, as yoʋ yoʋrself know very well.

Paul répondit: " Je suis devant le tribunal de César; c'est là que je dois être jugé. Je n'ai fait aucun tort aux Juifs, comme tu le sais bien toi-même.

11 If I am in the wrong and have done something that deserves death, I do not seek to escape death. But if none of the things these men accuse me of is true, no one can hand me over to them. I appeal to Caesar.”

Si j'ai commis quelque injustice ou quelque attentat qui mérite la mort, je ne refuse pas de mourir; mais s'il n'y a rien de fondé dans leurs accusations, personne n'a le droit de me livrer à eux. J'en appelle à César. "

12 After conferring with the council, Festus answered, “Yoʋ have appealed to Caesar; to Caesar yoʋ shall go.”

Alors Festus, après en avoir conféré avec son conseil, répondit: " Tu en as appelé à César, tu iras à César. "

13 After several days had passed, King Agrippa and Bernice arrived at Caesarea and greeted Festus.

Quelques jours après le roi Agrippa et Bérénice arrivèrent à Césarée pour saluer Festus.

14 Since the king was staying there for several days, Festus presented Paul's case to him, saying, “There is a man who was left as a prisoner by Felix.

Comme ils y passèrent plusieurs jours, Festus exposa au roi l'affaire de Paul, en disant: " Il y a ici un homme que Félix a laissé prisonnier.

15 When I was in Jerusalem, the chief priests and the elders of the Jews presented their case and asked for a judgment against him.

Lorsque j'étais à Jérusalem, les princes des prêtres et les Anciens des Juifs ont porté plainte contre lui, demandant sa condamnation.

16 I answered them that it is not the custom of the Romans to hand anyone over for destruction before the accused faces his accusers and has an opportunity to make his defense concerning the charges.

Je leur ai répondu que ce n'est pas la coutume des Romains de livrer un homme avant d'avoir confronté l'accusé avec ses accusateurs et de lui avoir donné les moyens de se justifier de ce dont on l'accuse.

17 So when they had assembled here, I did not postpone the case, but on the next day I sat on the judgment seat and ordered the man to be brought in.

Ils sont donc venus ici, et, sans différer, j'ai pris place le lendemain sur mon tribunal, et j'ai ordonné de m'amener cet homme.

18 When his accusers stood up, they brought no charge against him of the sort I was expecting.

Les accusateurs, s'étant présentés, ne lui imputèrent aucun des crimes que je supposais;

19 Instead they had certain points of disagreement with him about their own religion and about a man named Jesus who was dead, but whom Paul claimed was alive.

mais ils eurent avec lui des controverses ayant trait à leur religion particulière et à un certain Jésus, qui est mort et que Paul affirmait être vivant.

20 Since I was at a loss as to how to investigate this matter, I asked if he might be willing to go to Jerusalem and stand trial there on these charges.

Comme j'étais embarrassé pour faire une enquête sur ces matières, je lui demandai s'il voulait aller à Jérusalem et y être jugé sur ces accusations.

21 But Paul appealed to be kept in custody for the decision of His Majesty the Emperor, so I ordered him to be held until I could send him to Caesar.”

Mais Paul en ayant appelé, pour que sa cause fût réservée à la connaissance de l'empereur, j'ai ordonné de le garder jusqu'à ce que je l'envoie à César. "

22 Then Agrippa said to Festus, “I would like to hear the man myself.” Festus said, “Tomorrow yoʋ will hear him.”

Agrippa dit à Festus: " J'aurais voulu, moi aussi, entendre cet homme. " — " Demain, répondit Festus, tu l'entendras. "

23 So the next day Agrippa and Bernice came with great pomp and entered the auditorium along with the military commanders and the distinguished men of the city. Then Festus gave the command, and Paul was brought in.

Le lendemain, Agrippa et Bérénice vinrent en grand faste. Quand ils furent dans la salle d'audience avec les tribuns et les principaux personnages de la ville, Paul fut amené par l'ordre de Festus.

24 Festus said, “King Agrippa and all you men who are present with us, you see this man, concerning whom the entire Jewish community has appealed to me, both in Jerusalem and here in this place, crying out that he ought not to live any longer.

Et Festus dit: " Roi Agrippa, et vous tous qui êtes présents avec nous, vous avez devant vous l'homme au sujet duquel les Juifs sont venus en foule me parler soit à Jérusalem, soit ici, en criant qu'il ne fallait plus le laisser vivre.

25 But when I found that he had done nothing deserving death, and since he himself appealed to His Majesty the Emperor, I decided to send him.

Pour moi, ayant reconnu qu'il n'a rien fait qui mérite la mort, et lui-même en ayant appelé à l'empereur, j'ai résolu de le lui envoyer.

26 Yet I have nothing definite to write to my lord about this man. Therefore I have brought him before you all, and especially before yoʋ, King Agrippa, so that after we have had this preliminary hearing, I may have something to write.

Comme je n'ai rien de précis à écrire à l'empereur sur son compte, je l'ai fait comparaître devant vous, et surtout devant toi, roi Agrippa, afin qu'après cette audience je puisse rédiger mon rapport.

27 For it seems unreasonable to me to send a prisoner without indicating the charges against him.”

Car il me paraît déraisonnable d'envoyer un prisonnier, sans indiquer en même temps de quoi on l'accuse. "
