< Luke 11 >

1 AND it was that while he was praying in a certain place, when he had finished, one of his disciples said to him, Our Lord, teach us to pray as also Juchanon taught his disciples.
It happened he was praying in a certain place, and when he stopped, one of his disciples said to him, "Master, teach us how to pray, just as Johntaught his disciples."
2 Jeshu said to them, When you pray, thus be saying, Our Father who (art) in the heavens, be sanctified thy name. Come thy kingdom. Be done thy will as in the heavens also upon earth.
So he said to them. "When you pray, say, "Father, hallowed be thy name; May thy kingdom come,
3 Give to us the bread of our need every day,
"Give us day by day our bread for the coming day;
4 and forgive us our sins, for we also forgive all who are indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil.
"Forgive us our sins; for we also forgive everyone who has offended us; "And bring us not into temptation."
5 And he said to them, Who of you that has a friend, and shall go to him at midnight, and shall say to him, My friend, lend me three loaves,
He also said to them. "Suppose you have a friend and you go to him, ‘My friend, lend me three loaves of bread,
6 because a friend has come to me from the way, and I have nothing to set to him?
"for a friend of mine is come to me from a journey, and I have nothing to set before him.’
7 and that friend from within shall answer and say unto him, Disturb me not, for the door is shut, and my children are with me in bed: I cannot rise and give to you.
"and he from indoors shall answer. ‘Do not pester me. The door is now closed, and my children are with me in bed. I cannot rise and give to you.’
8 I tell you if for friendship's sake he will not give him, (yet) because of importunity he will arise and give him as many as he needeth.
"I tell you that, though he will not rise and give to him because he is his friend, yet because of his importunate persistence he will rise and give him whatever he needs.
9 I say also to you, Ask, and it shall be given to you; seek, and you shall find; knock, and it shall be opened to you.
"So I say to you. "Ask, and it shall be given to you; seek, and ye shall find; knock and it shall be opened to you.
10 For every one who asketh receiveth, and who seeketh findeth, and who knocketh hath it opened to him.
"For he that asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks the door shall be opened.
11 For what father (is there) among you who, if his son shall ask bread, will reach to him a stone? or should he ask a fish, how instead of a fish will he reach to him a serpent?
"What father is there among you who, if his son asks for a loaf, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish will give him instead a serpent?
12 or if an egg he shall ask, will he a scorpion reach to him?
"Or if he asks for an egg, will offer him a scorpion?
13 And if you, who are evil, know to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father from the heavens give the Spirit of Holiness to those who ask him!
"If you give good gifts to your children, how much more shall the Father who is in heaven give the Holy spirit to those that ask him!"
14 AND he was casting out a demon which was dumb; and when he had cast out the demon, the dumb spake, and the multitudes wondered.
Once he was casting out a dumb demon, and when the demon was gone out, the dumb man spoke, and the people wondered.
15 But some from them said, By Beelzebub, the prince of the devils, he casteth out devils;
But some of them said, "It is by Beelzebub, the prince of demons, that he cast out demons."
16 while others, tempting him, the sign from heaven demanded of him.
Others, tempting him, kept seeking from him a sign from heaven.
17 But Jeshu, who knew their thoughts, said to them, Every kingdom which is divided against itself will be desolated; and a house that against its own self is divided falleth;
He knew their intentions and said to them. "Every kingdom divided against itself is laid waste and house falls upon house.
18 and if Satana against himself be divided, how will his kingdom stand? Because you say that through Beelzebub I cast out devils.
"And if Satan also is divided against himself, how shall his kingdom stand?
19 But if I by Beelzebub cast out devils, your sons, by what do they cast (them) out? On account of this they shall be your judges.
"Do you say that I am casting out demons by the power of Beelzebub? If I then am casting out demons by Beelzebub, by whom are your sons casting them out? They therefore shall be your judges.
20 But if by the finger of Aloha I cast out devils, there hath drawn nigh upon you the kingdom of Aloha.
"But if it is by the finger of God that I am casting out demons, then the kingdom of God is come upon you.
21 When the strong one armed keepeth his court, his possession is in peace;
"When the strong man fully aroused keeps guard over his homestead, his property is undisturbed;
22 but if a stronger than he shall come, he shall overcome him; all his armour he taketh on which he depended, and he divideth his spoils.
"but when the stronger man attacks him, he takes away from the strong armor in which he was trusting and divides up the spoil.
23 He who is not with me is against me; and he who does not collect with me, by scattering he scattereth.
"He who is not for me is against me, and he who is not gathering with me is scattering.
24 The unclean spirit, when he hath gone out from a son of man, goeth about through regions which have no waters in them, because he seeketh to him rest. And when he cannot find it he saith, I will return to my house from whence I went out.
"Whenever a foul spirit is gone out of a man, it roams through waterless places, in search of rest; but when it can find none, it says, ‘I will go back to the house which I have left.’
25 And when he cometh he findeth it swept and ornamented.
When it comes and finds the house completely swept and garnished.
26 Then he goeth, taketh seven other spirits who are more wicked than himself, and they enter and dwell there, and the last of that man is worse than his first.
"Then it goes off and fetches seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and live there. And the last state of that man is worse than the first."
27 AND while he spake these words, a certain woman lifted up her voice from the crowd, and said to him, Blessed is the womb that bare thee, and the breasts which thou hast sucked!
It happened while he was saying this, that a certain woman out of the crowd shouted to him, saying, "Blessed is the womb that bore you, and the breast that you have sucked."
28 He said to her, Blessed are they who hear the word of Aloha and keep it.
"No, rather," he answered, "blessed are those who listen to the word of God, and keep it."
29 And when the assemblies had gathered together, he began to say, This evil generation requireth a sign; but no sign shall be given to it save the sign of Jaunon the prophet.
When the crowd were beginning to throng about him he proceeded to say. "This is an evil generation! It seeks a sign, and there shall be no sign be given to it except the sign of Jonah;
30 For as was Jaunon a sign to the Ninvoyee, so shall also the Son of man be to this generation.
"for as Jonah became a sign to the Ninevites, so shall the Son of man be to this generation.
31 The queen of the south shall rise in judgment with the men of this generation, and shall condemn them; for she came from the confines of the earth to hear the wisdom of Shelemun, and, lo, a greater than Shelemun is here.
"The queen of the South shall rise up in Judgement with the men of this generation, and shall condemn them; because she came from the ends of the earth to listen to the wisdom of Solomon, and lo, one greater than Solomon is here!
32 The men of Nineveh shall rise in judgment with this generation and shall condemn it: for they repented at the preaching of Jaunon, and, lo, a greater than Jaunon is here.
"The men of the Nineveh shall stand up in the judgment with his generation and shall condemn it, for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and lo! one greater than Jonah is here!
33 No man lighteth a lamp and setteth it in a secret (place) or under a measure, but upon a candlestick, that they who enter may see the light of it.
"When one lights a lamp he does not put it in a cellar nor under the bushel, but on a lamp-stand that those who enter may see the light.
34 The lamp of thy body is thine eye; when therefore thine eye is simple, thy whole body also will be illuminated; but if it be evil, thy body also will be darkness.
"The lamp of the body is your eye; when your eye is single then your whole body is full of light; but when it is evil your whole body is full of darkness.
35 Beware, therefore, lest the light that is in thee become darkness.
"Look carefully! Perhaps that very light of yours is darkness.
36 But if thy whole body be illuminated, and no part whatever in it be darkness, the whole will be light, as when a lamp with its flame enlighteneth thee.
"If, however, your whole body is full of light, without having any part dark, it will be wholly radiant with light, as when the lamp illumines you with its bright rays."
37 AND as he was speaking, a certain Pharisha requested of him to dine with him, and he went in to recline.
When he had finished speaking a Pharisee asked him to dine with him; so he went in with him and reclined.
38 But he, the Pharisha, when he saw him, wondered that he had not first washed before his dinner.
And the Pharisee noticed, to his amazement, that he did not wash his hands before eating,
39 But Jeshu said to him, Now you Pharishee cleanse the outside of the cup and the dish, but within you are full of rapine and wickedness.
but the Lord said to him. "You Pharisee do cleanse the outside of your cup or plate, but your secret heart is full of extortion and wickedness.
40 Wanting in understanding! did not he who made that which is without, make also that which is within?
"Foolish men! Did not He who made the outside make the inside also?
41 But of whatever there is, give in alms, and, behold, every thing is clean to you.
"Better cleanse what is within, and nothing will be unclean for you.
42 But woe to you, Pharishee! for you tithe mint, and rue, and every herb, and pass by judgment and the love of Aloha. These hath it behoved you to do, and those not to have omitted.
"But woe unto you Pharisee! for you tithe mint and rue and every herb, and disregard justice and the love of God; but these you ought to have done, and not leave the other undone.
43 Woe to you, Pharishee! for you love the chief seats in the assemblies, and the salutation in the public places.
"Woe unto you Pharisee! for you delight in the best seats in the synagogue, and in the salutation in the market-places.
44 Woe to you, scribes and Pharishee, hypocrites! for you are like tombs that are not known, and men walk upon them, and do not know.
"Woe unto you! for you are like the tombs which are hidden, and men walk over them unsuspecting."
45 And one of the Sophree answered and said to him, Doctor, while you say these things, you vilify us also!
Hereupon one of the lawyers exclaimed, "But teacher, in saying such things you are also reproaching us also."
46 But he said, Also unto you, Sophree, woe! because you lade men with heavy burdens, and you with one of your fingers will not touch those burdens.
"Woe unto you lawyers also!" said Jesus, "for you load men with irksome burdens, and you yourselves will not touch the burdens with one of your fingers.
47 Woe to you! for you build the tombs of the prophets whom your fathers killed:
"Woe to you! for you are building the tombs of the prophets whom you ancestors killed.
48 thus you bear witness that you consent in the deeds of your fathers; for they killed them, and you build their sepulchres.
"So you are witnesses, and you consent to the actions of your ancestors. for they killed them, and you build their tombs.
49 ON this account also Wisdom saith, Behold, I will send to them prophets and apostles; and of them they will persecute and kill;
"For this reason also said the Wisdom of God. ‘I will send them prophets and apostles; some of them they will kill and some they will persecute;
50 that the blood of all the prophets which hath been shed from the creation of the world may be required from this generation.
"so that the blood of all the prophets which was shed from the foundation of the world may be required from this generation,
51 From the blood of Habil unto the blood of Zakaria who was killed between the temple and the altar: yes, I tell you, It shall be required of this generation.
"from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zachariah, who perished between the alter and the sanctuary; yes; I tell you, it shall be required of this generation!
52 Woe to you, Sophree; for you have taken away the key of knowledge; you enter not in (yourselves), and they who are entering you prohibit.
"Woe to you lawyers, for you have taken away the key of knowledge!’ You yourselves have not entered, and you have hindered those who are trying to enter."
53 And while he spoke these (words) to them, the Sophree and Pharishee began to be displeased, and they were wrathful, and controverted his words, and enticed him on many (points),
After he had gone away, the Scribes and the Pharisee began to set themselves vehemently against him, and to cross-question him upon many points,
54 seeking to lay hold on something from his mouth that they might be able to accuse him.
laying in wait for him, in order to catch a word from his lips.
