૧“શું પૃથ્વી પર માણસને સંકટ સહન કરવાનું નથી? શું તેના દિવસો મજૂરના જેવા નથી?
2 like/as servant/slave to long for shadow and like/as hired to await work his
૨આતુરતાથી છાંયડાની રાહ જોનાર ગુલામની જેમ. અને પોતાના પગારની રાહ જોનાર મજૂરની જેમ,
3 so to inherit to/for me month vanity: vain and night trouble to count to/for me
૩તેથી મારે અર્થહીન મહિનાઓ ફોકટ કાઢવા પડે છે; અને કંટાળાભરેલી રાત્રિઓ મારા માટે ઠરાવેલી છે.

૪સૂતી વેળાએ હું વિચારું છું કે, ‘હું ક્યારે ઊઠીશ અને રાત્રી ક્યારે પસાર થશે?’ સૂર્યોદય થતાં સુધી હું આમતેમ પડખાં ફેરવ્યા કરું છું.

૫મારું શરીર કીડાઓથી તથા ધૂળના ઢેફાંથી ઢંકાયેલું છે. મારી ચામડી સૂકાઈને ફાટી ગઈ છે.

૬મારા દિવસો વણકરના કાંટલા કરતા વધુ ઝડપી છે, અને આશા વિના તેનો અંત આવે છે.

૭યાદ રાખજો કે, મારું જીવન માત્ર શ્વાસ છે; મારી આંખ ફરી કદી સુખ જોનાર નથી.

૮જેઓ મને જુએ છે, તેઓ મને ફરી જોશે નહિ; તું મને દેખતો હોઈશ એટલામાં હું લોપ થઈશ.
૯જેમ વાદળાં ઓગળીને અલોપ થઈ જાય છે, તેમ શેઓલમાં ઊતરનારા ફરી કદી ઉપર આવશે નહિ. (Sheol h7585)

૧૧માટે હું મારું મુખ બંધ નહિ રાખું; મારો આત્મા સંકટમાં છે તેથી હું બોલીશ; મારા આત્માની વેદનાને કારણે હું મારું દુ: ખ રડીશ.

૧૨શું હું સમુદ્ર છું કે સમુદ્રનું અજગર છું કે, તમે મારો ચોકી-પહેરો રાખો છો?

૧૩જ્યારે હું એમ કહું છું કે, ‘મારી પથારી મને શાંતિ આપશે, મારો પલંગ મારો ત્રાસ હલકો કરશે,’

૧૪ત્યારે સ્વપ્નો દ્વારા તમે મને એવો ત્રાસ ઉપજાવો છો અને સંદર્શનોથી મને ગભરાવો છો.

૧૫ત્યારે મારો જીવ ગૂંગળાઈ મરવાને, અને મારાં આ હાડકાં કરતાં મોત વધારે પસંદ છે.

૧૬મને કંટાળો આવે છે; મારે કાયમ માટે જીવવું નથી; મને એકલો રહેવા દો કેમ કે મારી જિંદગી વ્યર્થ છે.

૧૭મનુષ્ય કોણ માત્ર છે કે તમે તેને મોટો કરો, અને તમે તેના પર મન લગાડો,

૧૮રોજ સવારે તમે તેની મુલાકાત કરો છો અને તમે પ્રત્યેક ક્ષણે તેની કસોટી કરો છો?

૧૯ક્યાં સુધી મારા પરથી તમે તમારી નજર દૂર કરશો નહિ? હું મારું થૂંક ગળું એટલો સમય પણ તમે મને નહિ આપો?

૨૦જો મેં પાપ કર્યુ હોય તો, હે મારા રખેવાળ હું તમને શું અડચણરૂપ છું? તમે શા માટે મને મારવાના નિશાન તરીકે બેસાડી રાખ્યો છે, તેથી હું પોતાને બોજારૂપ થઈ ગયો છું?

૨૧તમે મારા અપરાધો કેમ માફ કરતા નથી? અને મારા અન્યાય દૂર કરતા નથી? હવે હું ધૂળમાં ભળી જઈશ; તમે મને સવારે ખંતથી શોધશો, પણ હું હોઈશ જ નહિ.”
