< Matthew 14 >

1 At that [very] time heard Herod the tetrarch the news of Jesus
In that time Herodes Tetrarka heard the rumour concerning Jeshu;
2 and he said to the servants of him; This is John the Baptist; he himself is risen from the dead, and because of this the miraculous powers are working in him.
and he said to his servants, This is Juchanon the Baptizer: he hath risen from the house of the dead, therefore powerful works are wrought by him.
3 For Herod having seized John he bound him and in prison (put [him] aside *N+kO) on account of Herodias the wife of Philip the brother of him.
For he, Herodes, had seized Juchanon, and bound him, and cast him (into) the house of the chained, because of Herodia the wife of Philip his brother.
4 Were saying for John to him; Not it is lawful for you to have her.
for Juchanon had said to him, It is not lawful that she should be to thee a wife.
5 Although wishing him to kill he feared the multitude because as a prophet him they were holding.
And he would have killed him, but he feared the people, because as a prophet they held him.
6 ([The] birthday *N+kO) now (having happened *N+kO) of Herod danced the daughter of Herodias in the midst and pleased Herod;
But at the birth-day of Herodes, the daughter of Herodia danced before those who reclined, and she pleased Herodes;
7 whereupon with oath he promised to her to give whatever (if *NK+o) she shall ask.
wherefore with an oath he sware to her to give her whatever she should demand.
8 And having been urged on by the mother of her; do give to me she says here on a platter the head of John the Baptist.
Then she, because instructed by her mother, said, Give me here in a dish the head of Juchanon the Baptizer.
9 And (being grieved *N+kO) the king on account of (now *k) the oaths and those reclining with [him] he commanded [it] to be given.
And the king sickened, yet, on account of the oath and the guests, he commanded that it should be given to her.
10 And he having sent beheaded John in the prison.
And he sent cut off the head of Juchanon in the house of the chained.
11 And was brought the head of him on a platter and was given to the girl, and she brought [it] to the mother of her.
And his head was brought in a dish, and given to the girl, and she carried it herself to her mother.
12 And having come the disciples of him took the (body *N+kO) and buried (it, *N+kO) and having come they told Jesus.
And his disciples came near, took up his corpse, buried (it), and came and showed Jeshu.
13 (and *k) Having heard (now *no) Jesus withdrew from there by boat to a secluded place apart [on his] own. And having heard [of it] the crowds followed Him on foot from the towns.
Then Jeshu, when he heard, removed from thence by ship to a desert place by himself; and when the multitude heard it, they came after him on dry land from the cities.
14 And having gone out (Jesus *k) He saw great a crowd and was moved with compassion toward (them *N+kO) and healed the sick of them.
And Jeshu came forth, and saw great multitudes, and felt compassion for them, and healed their diseases.
15 Evening now having come they came to Him the disciples (of him *k) saying; Desolate is this place, and the time already is gone by; do dismiss the crowds that having gone into the villages they may buy for themselves food.
BUT when it was eventide, his disciples approached him, and said to him, The place is desert, and the time passed over; send away these multitudes of men, that they may go to the villages, and buy for themselves food.
16 And Jesus said to them; No need they have to go away; do give to them you yourselves to eat.
But he said to them, It is not needful that they should go; give you them to eat.
17 And they say to Him; Not we have here only except five loaves and two fish.
They said to him, We have nothing here but five cakes and two fishes.
18 And He said; do bring to Me here them.
Jeshu said to them, Bring them hither to me.
19 And having commanded the crowds to sit down on (the grass, *N+kO) (and *k) having taken the five loaves and the two fish, having looked up to heaven He spoke a blessing, and having broken He gave to the disciples the loaves, and the disciples to the crowds.
And he directed the multitudes to recline upon the ground; and he took the five loaves and two fishes, and looked up to heaven, and blessed, and brake, and gave to his disciples, and the disciples themselves placed (it) before the multitudes.
20 And ate all and were satisfied; and they took up that which is remaindering of the fragments, twelve hand-baskets full.
And all did eat, and were satisfied; and they took up, of the abundance of the fragments, twelve baskets when full.
21 Those then eating were men about five thousand besides women and children.
Now those men who had eaten were five thousand, besides women and children.
22 And immediately He compelled (Jesus *k) the disciples (of him *k) to climb into the boat and to go before Him to the other side until that He may have dismissed the crowds.
And immediately he constrained his disciples to ascend into the bark, and proceed before him to the other shore, while he was dismissing the crowds.
23 And having dismissed the crowds He went up on the mountain on [his] own to pray. Evening now having arrived alone He was there.
And when he had sent the multitudes away, he went up to a mountain by himself, to pray. AND when it was dark, he alone was there.
24 And the boat now (stadia many *NO) (from *N+KO) of the (land was fully *N+KO) being tossed by the waves; was for contrary [was] the wind.
But the vessel was distant from the land many stadia, being greatly beaten with the waves, for the wind was against them.
25 In [the] fourth now watch of the night (he came *N+KO) to them (Jesus *k) walking on (the sea. *N+kO)
But in the fourth watch of the night, Jeshu came to them, walking upon the waters.
26 (and *N+kO) the disciples having seen Him on (the sea *N+kO) walking they were troubled saying that A ghost it is! And in fear they cried out.
And the disciples beheld him walking on the waters, and they were troubled, saying, That it was a spectre; and from fear they cried out.
27 Immediately now spoke Jesus to them saying; Take courage! I myself it is, not do fear.
But Jeshu at once spoke to them, and said, Take courage, I am, fear not!
28 Answering now to Him Peter said: Lord, if You yourself [it] is, do command me to come to You upon the waters.
And Kipha answered, and said to him, My Lord, if it be thou, command me to come to thee upon the waters.
29 And He said; do come. And having descended from the boat Peter walked upon the water (and *no) (came *N+kO) to Jesus.
Jeshu said to him, Come. And Kipha descended from the ship, and walked on the waters to go to Jeshu.
30 Seeing now the wind charging he was afraid, and having begun to sink he cried out saying; Lord, do save me!
But when he saw the furious wind, he feared, and began to sink; and he lifted up his voice, and said, My Lord, deliver me!
31 Immediately now Jesus having stretched out the hand took hold of him and He says to him; [You] of little faith, of why did you doubt?
And immediately our Lord reached forth his hand, and seized him, and said to him, Little of faith, why art thou divided (in mind)?
32 And (when were climbing *N+kO) they into the boat ceased the wind.
And when they had ascended into the ship, the wind was tranquil.
33 Those then in the boat (having come *ko) worshiped Him saying; Truly of God Son You are!
And they who were in the ship, came and adored him, and said, Truly the Son thou art of Aloha.
34 And having crossed over they came (into *NK+o) the land (of *no) Gennesaret.
And they rowed, and came to the land of Genésar;
35 And having recognized Him the men of the place that one sent to all surrounding region that and brought to Him all those sick being
and the men of that country recognized him, and sent to all the villages that were about them, and they brought to him all those who were grievously afflicted,
36 and they were begging Him that only they may touch the fringe of the garment of Him; and as many as touched were cured.
and besought from him that they might touch only the border of his mantle; and those who touched were healed.
