< Matthew 14 >

1 At that [very] time heard Herod the tetrarch the news of Jesus
ⲁ̅ϩⲙ ⲡⲉⲩⲟⲉⲓϣ ⲉⲧⲙⲙⲁⲩ ⲁϥⲥⲱⲧⲙ ⲛϭⲓ ϩⲏⲣⲱⲇⲏⲥ ⲡⲧⲉⲧⲣⲁⲁⲣⲭⲏⲥ ⲉⲡⲥⲟⲉⲓⲧ ⲛⲓⲏⲥ
2 and he said to the servants of him; This is John the Baptist; he himself is risen from the dead, and because of this the miraculous powers are working in him.
ⲃ̅ⲡⲉϫⲁϥ ⲛⲛⲉϥϩⲙϩⲁⲗ ϫⲉ ⲡⲁⲓ ⲡⲉ ⲓⲱϩⲁⲛⲛⲏⲥ ⲡⲃⲁⲡⲧⲓⲥⲧⲏⲥ ⲛⲧⲟϥ ⲇⲉ ⲡⲉⲛⲧⲁϥⲧⲱⲟⲩⲛ ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ϩⲛ ⲛⲉⲧⲙⲟⲟⲩⲧ ⲉⲧⲃⲉ ⲡⲁⲓ ⲛⲉⲓϭⲟⲙ ⲉⲛⲉⲣⲅⲉⲓ ϩⲣⲁⲓ ⲛϩⲏⲧϥ
3 For Herod having seized John he bound him and in prison (put [him] aside *N+kO) on account of Herodias the wife of Philip the brother of him.
ⲅ̅ϩⲏⲣⲱⲇⲏⲥ ⲅⲁⲣ ϩⲙ ⲡⲉⲩⲟⲉⲓϣ ⲉⲧⲙⲙⲁⲩ ⲁϥⲁⲙⲁϩⲧⲉ ⲛⲓⲱϩⲁⲛⲛⲏⲥ ⲁϥⲙⲟⲣϥ ⲁϥⲕⲱ ⲙⲙⲟϥ ϩⲙ ⲡⲉϣⲧⲉⲕⲟ ⲉⲧⲃⲉ ϩⲏⲣⲱⲇⲓⲁⲥ ⲑⲓⲙⲉ ⲙⲫⲓⲗⲓⲡⲡⲟⲥ ⲡⲉϥⲥⲟⲛ
4 Were saying for John to him; Not it is lawful for you to have her.
ⲇ̅ⲛⲉⲣⲉⲓⲱϩⲁⲛⲛⲏⲥ ⲅⲁⲣ ϫⲱ ⲙⲙⲟⲥ ⲛⲁϥ ϫⲉ ⲟⲩⲕ ⲉⲝⲉⲥⲧⲉⲓ ⲛⲁⲕ ⲉϫⲓ ⲙⲙⲟⲥ
5 Although wishing him to kill he feared the multitude because as a prophet him they were holding.
ⲉ̅ⲁⲩⲱ ⲛⲉϥⲟⲩⲱϣ ⲉⲙⲟⲟⲩⲧϥ ⲁϥⲣ ϩⲟⲧⲉ ϩⲏⲧϥ ⲙⲡⲙⲏⲏϣⲉ ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ϫⲉ ⲉⲛⲉⲩϫⲓ ⲙⲙⲟϥ ⲡⲉ ϩⲱⲥ ⲡⲣⲟⲫⲏⲧⲏⲥ
6 ([The] birthday *N+kO) now (having happened *N+kO) of Herod danced the daughter of Herodias in the midst and pleased Herod;
ⲋ̅ⲛⲧⲉⲣⲉϥϣⲱⲡⲉ ⲇⲉ ⲛϭⲓ ⲡϩⲟⲩⲙⲓⲥⲉ ⲛϩⲏⲣⲱⲇⲏⲥ ⲁⲥϭⲟⲥϭⲥ ⲛϭⲓ ⲧϣⲉⲉⲣⲉ ⲛϩⲏⲣⲱⲇⲓⲁⲥ ⲛⲧⲙⲏⲧⲉ ⲁⲥⲣⲁⲛⲁϥ ⲛϩⲏⲣⲱⲇⲏⲥ
7 whereupon with oath he promised to her to give whatever (if *NK+o) she shall ask.
ⲍ̅ⲁⲩⲱ ϩⲛ ⲟⲩⲁⲛⲁϣ ⲁϥϩⲟⲙⲟⲗⲟⲅⲉⲓ ⲉϯ ⲛⲁⲥ ⲙⲡⲉⲧⲥⲛⲁⲁⲓⲧⲉⲓ ⲙⲙⲟϥ
8 And having been urged on by the mother of her; do give to me she says here on a platter the head of John the Baptist.
ⲏ̅ⲛⲧⲟⲥ ⲇⲉ ⲁⲩⲧⲟⲩⲛⲉⲓⲁⲧⲥ ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ϩⲓⲧⲛ ⲧⲉⲥⲙⲁⲁⲩ ⲡⲉϫⲁⲥ ϫⲉ ⲙⲁ ⲛⲁⲓ ϩⲙ ⲡⲉⲓⲙⲁ ⲛⲧⲁⲡⲉ ⲛⲓⲱϩⲁⲛⲛⲏⲥ ⲡⲃⲁⲡⲧⲓⲥⲧⲏⲥ ϩⲓϫⲛ ⲟⲩⲡⲓⲛⲁⲝ
9 And (being grieved *N+kO) the king on account of (now *k) the oaths and those reclining with [him] he commanded [it] to be given.
ⲑ̅ⲁϥⲗⲩⲡⲉⲓ ⲛϭⲓ ⲡⲣⲣⲟ ⲉⲙⲁⲧⲉ ⲉⲧⲃⲉ ⲛⲁⲛⲁⲩϣ ⲇⲉ ⲙⲛ ⲛⲉⲧⲛⲏϫ ⲛⲙⲙⲁϥ ⲁϥⲟⲩⲉϩⲥⲁϩⲛⲉ ⲉϯ ⲙⲙⲟⲥ ⲛⲁⲥ
10 And he having sent beheaded John in the prison.
ⲓ̅ⲁϥϫⲟⲟⲩ ⲁϥϥⲓ ⲛⲧⲁⲡⲉ ⲛⲓⲱϩⲁⲛⲛⲏⲥ ϩⲙ ⲡⲉϣⲧⲉⲕⲟ
11 And was brought the head of him on a platter and was given to the girl, and she brought [it] to the mother of her.
ⲓ̅ⲁ̅ⲁⲩⲉⲓⲛⲉ ⲙⲙⲟⲥ ϩⲓϫⲙ ⲡⲡⲓⲛⲁⲝ ⲁⲩⲧⲁⲁⲥ ⲛⲧϣⲉⲉⲣⲉ ϣⲏⲙ ⲁⲥⲉⲓⲛⲉ ⲙⲙⲟⲥ ⲛⲧⲉⲥⲙⲁⲁⲩ
12 And having come the disciples of him took the (body *N+kO) and buried (it, *N+kO) and having come they told Jesus.
ⲓ̅ⲃ̅ⲛⲉϥⲙⲁⲑⲏⲧⲏⲥ ⲇⲉ ⲁⲩϯⲡⲉⲩⲟⲩⲟⲓ ⲁⲩϥⲓ ⲙⲡⲉϥⲥⲱⲙⲁ ⲁⲩⲧⲟⲙⲥϥ ⲁⲩⲉⲓ ⲁⲩϫⲓⲡⲟⲩⲱ ⲛⲓⲏⲥ
13 (and *k) Having heard (now *no) Jesus withdrew from there by boat to a secluded place apart [on his] own. And having heard [of it] the crowds followed Him on foot from the towns.
ⲓ̅ⲅ̅ⲁϥⲥⲱⲧⲙ ⲇⲉ ⲛϭⲓ ⲓⲏⲥ ⲁϥⲁⲛⲁⲭⲱⲣⲉⲓ ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ϩⲙ ⲡⲙⲁ ⲉⲧⲙⲙⲁⲩ ϩⲓⲟⲩϫⲟⲓ ⲉⲩⲙⲁ ⲛϫⲁⲓⲉ ⲙⲁⲩⲁⲁϥ ⲁⲩⲥⲱⲧⲙ ⲇⲉ ⲛϭⲓ ⲙⲙⲏⲏϣⲉ ⲁⲩⲟⲩⲁϩⲟⲩ ⲛⲥⲱϥ ⲡⲉⲍⲏ ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ϩⲛ ⲙⲡⲟⲗⲓⲥ
14 And having gone out (Jesus *k) He saw great a crowd and was moved with compassion toward (them *N+kO) and healed the sick of them.
ⲓ̅ⲇ̅ⲁϥⲉⲓ ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ⲁϥⲛⲁⲩ ⲉⲩⲛⲟϭ ⲙⲙⲏⲏϣⲉ ⲁϥϣⲛϩⲧⲏϥ ⲉϩⲣⲁⲓ ⲉϫⲱⲟⲩ ⲁⲩⲱ ⲁϥⲣⲡⲁϩⲣⲉ ⲉⲛⲉⲧϣⲱⲛⲉ ⲛϩⲏⲧⲟⲩ
15 Evening now having come they came to Him the disciples (of him *k) saying; Desolate is this place, and the time already is gone by; do dismiss the crowds that having gone into the villages they may buy for themselves food.
ⲓ̅ⲉ̅ⲣⲟⲩϩⲉ ⲇⲉ ⲛⲧⲉⲣⲉϥϣⲱⲡⲉ ⲁⲩϯⲡⲉⲩⲟⲩⲟⲓ ⲉⲣⲟϥ ⲛϭⲓ ⲛⲉϥⲙⲁⲑⲏⲧⲏⲥ ⲉⲩϫⲱ ⲙⲙⲟⲥ ϫⲉ ⲡⲙⲁ ⲟⲩϫⲁⲓⲉ ⲡⲉ ⲁⲩⲱ ⲁⲡⲛⲁⲩ ⲟⲩⲉⲓⲛⲉ ⲕⲁⲙⲙⲏⲏϣⲉ ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ϫⲉⲕⲁⲥ ⲉⲩⲉⲃⲱⲕ ⲉⲛⲉⲧⲙⲉ ⲉⲧⲙⲡⲉⲩⲕⲱⲧⲉ ⲛⲥⲉϣⲱⲡ ⲛⲁⲩ ⲙⲡⲉⲧⲟⲩⲛⲁⲟⲩⲟⲙϥ
16 And Jesus said to them; No need they have to go away; do give to them you yourselves to eat.
ⲓ̅ⲋ̅ⲓⲏⲥ ⲇⲉ ⲡⲉϫⲁϥ ⲛⲁⲩ ϫⲉ ⲛⲥⲉⲣⲭⲣⲓⲁ ⲁⲛ ⲉⲧⲣⲉⲩⲃⲱⲕ ⲛⲧⲱⲧⲛ ϯⲛⲁⲩ ⲉⲧⲣⲉⲩⲟⲩⲱⲙ
17 And they say to Him; Not we have here only except five loaves and two fish.
ⲓ̅ⲍ̅ⲛⲧⲟⲟⲩ ⲇⲉ ⲡⲉϫⲁⲩ ⲛⲁϥ ϫⲉ ⲙⲛ ⲧⲁⲛⲗⲁⲁⲩ ⲙⲡⲉⲓⲙⲁ ⲛⲥⲁϯⲟⲩ ⲛⲟⲉⲓⲕ ⲙⲛ ⲧⲏⲃⲧ ⲥⲛⲁⲩ
18 And He said; do bring to Me here them.
ⲓ̅ⲏ̅ⲛⲧⲟϥ ⲇⲉ ⲡⲉϫⲁϥ ⲛⲁⲩ ϫⲉ ⲁⲩⲉⲓⲥⲟⲩ ⲛⲁⲓ ⲉⲡⲉⲓⲙⲁ
19 And having commanded the crowds to sit down on (the grass, *N+kO) (and *k) having taken the five loaves and the two fish, having looked up to heaven He spoke a blessing, and having broken He gave to the disciples the loaves, and the disciples to the crowds.
ⲓ̅ⲑ̅ⲁϥⲟⲩⲉϩⲥⲁϩⲛⲉ ⲉⲧⲣⲉⲛⲙⲏⲏϣⲉ ⲛⲟϫⲟⲩ ⲉϩⲣⲁⲓ ⲉϫⲙ ⲡⲉⲭⲟⲣⲧⲟⲥ ⲁϥϫⲓ ⲙⲡϯⲟⲩ ⲛⲟⲉⲓⲕ ⲙⲛ ⲡⲧⲏⲃⲧ ⲥⲛⲁⲩ ⲁϥϥⲓⲉⲓⲁⲧϥ ⲇⲉ ⲉϩⲣⲁⲓ ⲉⲧⲡⲉ ⲁϥⲥⲙⲟⲩ ⲉⲣⲟⲟⲩ ⲁϥⲡⲟϣⲟⲩ ⲁϥϯ ⲛⲛⲟⲉⲓⲕ ⲛⲛⲉϥⲙⲁⲑⲏⲧⲏⲥ ⲙⲙⲁⲑⲏⲧⲏⲥ ⲇⲉ ⲛⲙⲙⲏⲏϣⲉ
20 And ate all and were satisfied; and they took up that which is remaindering of the fragments, twelve hand-baskets full.
ⲕ̅ⲁⲩⲟⲩⲱⲙ ⲇⲉ ⲧⲏⲣⲟⲩ ⲁⲩⲱ ⲁⲩⲥⲉⲓ ⲁⲩϥⲓ ⲛⲛⲗⲁⲕⲙ ⲛⲧⲁⲩⲥⲉⲉⲡⲉ ⲙⲛ ⲧⲥⲛⲟⲟⲩⲥ ⲛⲕⲟⲧ ⲉⲩⲙⲉϩ
21 Those then eating were men about five thousand besides women and children.
ⲕ̅ⲁ̅ⲛⲉⲧⲟⲩⲱⲙ ⲇⲉ ⲛⲉⲩⲛⲁⲣⲁϯⲟⲩ ⲛϣⲟ ⲛⲣⲱⲙⲉ ⲭⲱⲣⲓⲥ ϣⲏⲣⲉ ϣⲏⲙ ϩⲓⲥϩⲓⲙⲉ
22 And immediately He compelled (Jesus *k) the disciples (of him *k) to climb into the boat and to go before Him to the other side until that He may have dismissed the crowds.
ⲕ̅ⲃ̅ⲛⲧⲉⲩⲛⲟⲩ ⲇⲉ ⲁϥⲁⲛⲁⲅⲕⲁⲍⲉ ⲛⲛⲉϥⲙⲁⲑⲏⲧⲏⲥ ⲉⲧⲁⲗⲉ ⲉⲡϫⲟⲓ ⲁⲩⲱ ⲉⲣϣⲟⲣⲡ ⲉⲣⲟϥ ⲉⲡⲉⲕⲣⲟ ϣⲁⲛⲧⲉϥⲕⲱ ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ⲛⲙⲙⲏⲏϣⲉ
23 And having dismissed the crowds He went up on the mountain on [his] own to pray. Evening now having arrived alone He was there.
ⲕ̅ⲅ̅ⲛⲧⲉⲣⲉϥⲕⲱ ⲇⲉ ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ⲛⲙⲙⲏⲏϣⲉ ⲁϥⲁⲗⲉ ⲉϩⲣⲁⲓ ⲉϫⲙ ⲡⲧⲟⲟⲩ ⲙⲁⲩⲁⲁϥ ⲁϥϣⲗⲏⲗ ⲣⲟⲩϩⲉ ⲇⲉ ⲛⲧⲉⲣⲉϥϣⲱⲡⲉ ⲛⲉϥ ϩⲙ ⲡⲙⲁ ⲉⲧⲙⲙⲁⲩ ⲙⲁⲩⲁⲁϥ
24 And the boat now (stadia many *NO) (from *N+KO) of the (land was fully *N+KO) being tossed by the waves; was for contrary [was] the wind.
ⲕ̅ⲇ̅ⲡϫⲟⲓ ⲇⲉ ⲛⲉϥⲟⲩⲏⲩ ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ⲙⲡⲉⲕⲣⲟ ⲛⲟⲩⲙⲏⲏϣⲉ ⲛⲥⲧⲁⲇⲓⲟⲛ ⲉⲩⲙⲟⲩⲕϩ ⲙⲙⲟϥ ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ϩⲓⲧⲟⲟⲧⲟⲩ ⲛⲛϩⲓⲙⲏ ⲡⲧⲏⲩ ⲅⲁⲣ ⲛⲉϥϯ ⲟⲩⲃⲏⲩ ⲡⲉ
25 In [the] fourth now watch of the night (he came *N+KO) to them (Jesus *k) walking on (the sea. *N+kO)
ⲕ̅ⲉ̅ϩⲛ ⲧⲙⲉϩϥⲧⲟ ⲇⲉ ⲛⲟⲩⲏⲣϣⲉ ⲛⲧⲉⲩϣⲏ ⲁϥⲉⲓ ϣⲁⲣⲟⲟⲩ ⲉϥⲙⲟⲟϣⲉ ϩⲓϫⲛ ⲑⲁⲗⲁⲥⲥⲁ
26 (and *N+kO) the disciples having seen Him on (the sea *N+kO) walking they were troubled saying that A ghost it is! And in fear they cried out.
ⲕ̅ⲋ̅ⲛⲧⲉⲣⲟⲩⲛⲁⲩ ⲇⲉ ⲉⲣⲟϥ ⲉϥⲙⲟⲟϣⲉ ϩⲓϫⲛ ⲑⲁⲗⲁⲥⲥⲁ ⲁⲩϣⲧⲟⲣⲧⲣ ⲉⲩϫⲱ ⲙⲙⲟⲥ ϫⲉ ⲟⲩⲫⲁⲛⲧⲁⲥⲙⲁ ⲡⲉ ⲁⲩⲱ ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ϩⲛ ⲑⲟⲧⲉ ⲁⲩϫⲓϣⲕⲁⲕ ⲉⲃⲟⲗ
27 Immediately now spoke Jesus to them saying; Take courage! I myself it is, not do fear.
ⲕ̅ⲍ̅ⲛⲧⲉⲩⲛⲟⲩ ⲇⲉ ⲁϥϣⲁϫⲉ ⲛⲙⲙⲁⲩ ⲉϥϫⲱ ⲙⲙⲟⲥ ϫⲉ ⲧⲱⲕ ⲛϩⲏⲧ ⲁⲛⲟⲕ ⲡⲉ ⲙⲡⲣⲣϩⲟⲧⲉ
28 Answering now to Him Peter said: Lord, if You yourself [it] is, do command me to come to You upon the waters.
ⲕ̅ⲏ̅ⲁϥⲟⲩⲱϣⲃ ⲇⲉ ⲛⲁϥ ⲛϭⲓ ⲡⲉⲧⲣⲟⲥ ⲉϥϫⲱ ⲙⲙⲟⲥ ϫⲉ ⲡϫⲟⲉⲓⲥ ⲉϣϫⲉ ⲛⲧⲟⲕ ⲡⲉ ⲟⲩⲉϩⲥⲁϩⲛⲉ ⲛⲁⲓ ⲉⲧⲣⲁⲉⲓ ϣⲁⲣⲟⲕ ϩⲓϫⲛ ⲙⲙⲟⲟⲩ
29 And He said; do come. And having descended from the boat Peter walked upon the water (and *no) (came *N+kO) to Jesus.
ⲕ̅ⲑ̅ⲛⲧⲟϥ ⲇⲉ ⲡⲉϫⲁϥ ⲛⲁϥ ϫⲉ ⲁⲙⲟⲩ ⲁϥⲉⲓ ⲉⲡⲉⲥⲏⲧ ⲛϭⲓ ⲡⲉⲧⲣⲟⲥ ϩⲙ ⲡϫⲟⲓ ⲁϥⲙⲟⲟϣⲉ ⲉϩⲣⲁⲓ ⲉϫⲛ ⲙⲙⲟⲟⲩ ⲁϥⲉⲓ ϣⲁ ⲓⲏⲥ
30 Seeing now the wind charging he was afraid, and having begun to sink he cried out saying; Lord, do save me!
ⲗ̅ⲉϥⲛⲁⲩ ⲇⲉ ⲉⲡⲧⲏⲩ ⲁϥⲣ ϩⲟⲧⲉ ⲁⲩⲱ ⲛⲧⲉⲣⲉϥⲁⲣⲭⲉⲓ ⲛⲱⲙⲥ ⲁϥϫⲓϣⲕⲁⲕ ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ⲉϥϫⲱ ⲙⲙⲟⲥ ϫⲉ ⲡϫⲟⲉⲓⲥ ⲙⲁⲧⲟⲩϫⲟⲓ
31 Immediately now Jesus having stretched out the hand took hold of him and He says to him; [You] of little faith, of why did you doubt?
ⲗ̅ⲁ̅ⲛⲧⲉⲩⲛⲟⲩ ⲇⲉ ⲁϥⲥⲟⲟⲩⲧⲛ ⲛⲧⲉϥϭⲓϫ ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ⲛϭⲓ ⲓⲏⲥ ⲁϥⲁⲙⲁϩⲧⲉ ⲙⲙⲟϥ ⲡⲉϫⲁϥ ⲛⲁϥ ϫⲉ ⲡⲁⲧⲕⲟⲩⲓ ⲙⲡⲓⲥⲧⲓⲥ ⲉⲧⲃⲉ ⲟⲩ ⲁⲕⲇⲓⲥⲇⲁⲍⲉ
32 And (when were climbing *N+kO) they into the boat ceased the wind.
ⲗ̅ⲃ̅ⲛⲧⲉⲣⲟⲩⲁⲗⲉ ⲇⲉ ⲉⲡϫⲟⲓ ⲁϥϭⲱ ⲛϭⲓ ⲡⲧⲏⲩ ⲛⲧⲉⲩⲛⲟⲩ
33 Those then in the boat (having come *ko) worshiped Him saying; Truly of God Son You are!
ⲗ̅ⲅ̅ⲁⲩⲟⲩⲱϣⲧ ⲛⲁϥ ⲛϭⲓ ⲛⲉⲧϣⲟⲟⲡ ϩⲙ ⲡϫⲟⲓ ⲉⲩϫⲱ ⲙⲙⲟⲥ ϫⲉ ⲛⲁⲙⲉ ⲛⲧⲟⲕ ⲡⲉ ⲡϣⲏⲣⲉ ⲙⲡⲛⲟⲩⲧⲉ
34 And having crossed over they came (into *NK+o) the land (of *no) Gennesaret.
ⲗ̅ⲇ̅ⲛⲧⲉⲣⲟⲩϫⲓⲟⲟⲣ ⲇⲉ ⲁⲩⲉⲓ ⲉϩⲣⲁⲓ ⲉⲡⲉⲕⲣⲟ ⲛⲅⲉⲛⲛⲏⲍⲁⲣⲉⲧ
35 And having recognized Him the men of the place that one sent to all surrounding region that and brought to Him all those sick being
ⲗ̅ⲉ̅ⲁⲩⲥⲟⲩⲱⲛϥ ⲇⲉ ⲛϭⲓ ⲛⲣⲱⲙⲉ ⲙⲡⲙⲁ ⲉⲧⲙⲙⲁⲩ ⲁⲩϫⲟⲟⲩ ⲉϩⲣⲁⲓ ⲉⲧⲡⲉⲣⲓⲭⲱⲣⲟⲥ ⲧⲏⲣⲥ ⲉⲧⲙⲙⲁⲩ ⲁⲩⲉⲓⲛⲉ ⲛⲁϥ ⲛⲟⲩⲟⲛ ⲛⲓⲙ ⲉⲧⲙⲟⲕϩ
36 and they were begging Him that only they may touch the fringe of the garment of Him; and as many as touched were cured.
ⲗ̅ⲋ̅ⲁⲩⲱ ⲁⲩⲥⲡⲥⲱⲡϥ ϫⲉⲕⲁⲥ ⲉⲩⲉϫⲱϩ ⲙⲙⲁⲧⲉ ⲉⲡⲧⲟⲡ ⲙⲡⲉϥϩⲟⲉⲓⲧⲉ ⲁⲩⲱ ⲛⲉⲛⲧⲁⲩϫⲱϩ ⲁⲩⲟⲩϫⲁⲓ
