Romans 7

1 Or are ye ignorant, brethren, —for unto them that understand the law am I speaking, that, the law, hath lordship over a men as long as he liveth?

Vous n'ignorez pas, mes frères, (car je m'adresse à des gens qui connaissent la loi) que l'homme est sous l'empire de la loi, aussi longtemps qu'il vit.

2 For, the married woman, unto her living husband is bound by law; but, if her husband have died, she hath received a full release from the law of her husband.

La femme mariée, par exemple, est liée par la loi à son mari, tant qu'il est vivant; mais si son mari meurt, elle est dégagée de la loi qui la liait à son mari.

3 Hence then, her husband being alive, an adulteress, shall she be called—if she become another man’s, but, if the husband have died, she is free from the law; so that she is not an adulteress, though she become another man’s.

Ainsi donc, on l'appellera adultère, si, du vivant de son mari, elle se donne à un autre homme; mais, si son mari meurt, elle est affranchie de la loi, en sorte qu'elle n'est point adultère, si elle se donne à un autre mari.

4 So, then, my brethren, ye also, were made dead unto the law through the body of the Christ, to the end ye might become another’s—his who from among the dead was raised, in order that we might bring forth fruit unto God.

Vous, de même, mes frères, on vous a fait mourir à la loi au moyen de la personne de Christ, pour que vous vous donniez à un autre, à celui qui est ressuscité des morts; afin que nous portions des fruits pour Dieu.

5 For, when we were in the flesh, the susceptibilities of sins which were through the law, used to be energized in our members unto the bringing forth of fruit unto death;

En effet, lorsque nous vivions selon la chair, les passions, qui engendrent les péchés, éveillées par la loi, déployaient leur puissance dans nos membres, de sorte que nous portions des fruits pour la mort;

6 But, now, we have received full release from the law, by dying [in that] wherein we used to be held fast, so that we should be doing service—in newness of spirit and not in obsoleteness of letter.

mais maintenant, nous avons été dégagés de la loi, étant morts à la loi, sous l'autorité de laquelle nous étions tenus, de sorte que nous servons Dieu dans un esprit nouveau, et non suivant une lettre surannée.

7 What, then, shall we say? Is the law sin? Far be it! On the contrary, I had not discovered, sin, save through law, for even, of coveting, I had not been aware if, the law, had not kept on saying—Thou shall not covet;

Que dirons-nous donc? La loi est-elle péché? — Non, sans doute; mais je n'aurais certainement pas connu le péché, si une loi ne me l'avait fait connaître: par exemple, je n'aurais pas connu la convoitise, si la loi n'avait dit: «Tu ne convoiteras point.»

8 Howbeit sin taking, occasion—through the commandment, wrought out in me all manner of coveting; for, apart from law, sin is dead; —

Puis, le Péché en ayant pris occasion, a fait naître en moi, par le commandement, toutes sortes de convoitises; car sans loi, le Péché est mort.

9 And, I, was alive, apart from law, at one time, but, the commandment coming, sin sprang up to life,

Pour moi, autrefois étant sans loi, je vivais; mais le commandement étant venu, le Péché a pris vie, et moi, je suis mort;

10 Whereas, I, died, —and the commandment which was unto life was found by me to be, itself, unto death;

de sorte qu'il s'est trouvé que le commandement même qui devait me donner la vie, m'a donné la mort.

11 For, sin, —taking occasion—through the commandment, completely deceived me and, through it, slew me:

Le Péché, en effet, ayant saisi l'occasion, m'a séduit par le commandement, et m'a donné la mort par ce commandement même.

12 So that, the law, indeed, is holy, and the commandment, holy, and righteous and good.

Ainsi la loi est bien sainte, et le commandement saint, juste et bon.

13 Did, then, that which is good, unto me become death? Far be it! But [it was] sin, that it might appear sin, through that which was good unto me working out death, in order that, exceeding sinful, might sin become through the commandment.

Une chose bonne m'aurait donc donné la mort? — Non, sans doute; mais c'est le Péché qui m'a donné la mort, afin de se montrer péché, en me donnant la mort par le moyen d'une chose bonne, afin même de se développer à l'excès par le moyen du commandement.

14 For we know that, the law, is spiritual, —I, however, am a creature of flesh, sold under sin;

En effet, nous savons que la loi est spirituelle, mais c'est moi qui suis charnel, vendu au Péché;

15 For, that which I am working out, I do not approve, —for not, what I wish, the same I practise, but, what I hate, the same I do:

car je ne sais ce que je fais: je ne fais pas ce que je veux, et je fais ce que je hais;

16 Now, if what I wish not the same I do, I consent unto the law that [it is] right.

or, si je fais ce que je ne veux pas, je reconnais que la loi est bonne.

17 Now, however, no longer am, I, working it out, but the, sin, that dwelleth in me:

Ce n'est donc plus moi qui le fais, mais c'est le Péché qui habite en moi:

18 I know, in fact, that there dwelleth not in me, that is, in my flesh, anything good; for, the wishing, lieth near me, but, the working out of what is right, not!

en effet, je sais que le bien n'habite pas en moi, c’est-à-dire, en ma chair, car vouloir le bien est en mon pouvoir, mais l'exécuter, non;

19 For not, the good that I wish, I do, but, the evil that I do not wish, the same I practise.

puisque je ne fais pas le bien que je veux, mais que je fais le mal que je ne veux pas.

20 Now, if what I wish not, the same, I do, no longer am, I, working it out, but the, sin, that dwelleth in me.

Or, si je fais ce que je ne veux pas, ce n'est plus moi qui le fais, mais c'est le Péché qui habite en moi.

21 Hence, I find the law, to me who wish to be doing the right, that, unto me, the wrong lieth near:

Je trouve donc cette loi en moi, c'est que, lorsque je veux faire le bien, le mal est là.

22 I have, in fact, a sympathetic pleasure in the law of God; according to the inner man.

En effet, je prends plaisir à la loi de Dieu, selon l'homme intérieur,

23 But I behold a diverse law in my members, warring against the law of my mind and taking me captive in the law of sin which existeth in my members: —

mais je vois dans mes membres une autre loi qui lutte contre la loi de ma raison, et fait de moi le captif de la loi du Péché, laquelle est dans mes membres.

24 Wretched, man am, I! Who shall rescue me out of this body doomed to death?

Malheureux que je suis! qui me délivrera du corps qui cause cette mort?

25 [But] thanks be unto God!—Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Hence, then, —I myself, with the mind, indeed, am in servitude unto a law of God; but; with the flesh; unto a law of sin.

— Ah! grâces soient rendues à Dieu, par Jésus-Christ, notre Seigneur! Ainsi donc, moi-même, par l'intérieur, je suis esclave de la loi de Dieu; mais par la chair, je suis esclave de la loi du Péché.
