Psalms 127

1 A Song of Ascents. Solomon’s. If, Yahweh, build not the house, in vain, have the builders of it toiled thereon, If, Yahweh, watch not the city, in vain, hath the watchman kept awake:

Wallfahrtslieder. Von Salomo. Wenn Jahwe nicht das Haus baut, so haben sich seine Erbauer umsonst mit ihm abgemüht; wenn Jahwe nicht die Stadt behütet, so hat der Wächter umsonst gewacht.

2 Vain for you, —to be early in rising, to be late in lying down, to be eating the bread of wearisome toil, So, would he give his beloved one sleep.

Es ist umsonst für euch, die ihr früh aufsteht und erst spät euch niederlegt, indem ihr das Brot der Mühen eßt: ebenso giebt er's seinem Geliebten im Schlafe.

3 Lo! an inheritance from Yahweh, are children, A reward, the fruit of the womb:

Fürwahr, ein von Jahwe verliehener Besitz sind Söhne, ein Lohn die Leibesfrucht.

4 As arrows in the hand of a warrior, so, are the children of young men.

Wie Pfeile in der Hand eines Helden, also sind die Söhne der Jugendkraft.

5 How happy the man who hath filled his quiver with them! They will not be ashamed, but will speak with enemies in the gate.

Wohl dem Manne, der seinen Köcher mit ihnen gefüllt hat! Sie werden nicht zu Schanden, wenn sie im Thore mit Feinden verhandeln.
