Philippians 1
1 Paul and Timothy, servants of Jesus Christ, —unto all the saints in Christ Jesus who are in Philippi, with overseers and ministers: —
Paul et Timothée, serviteurs du Christ Jésus, à tous les saints dans le Christ Jésus qui sont à Philippes, aux évêques et aux diacres:
2 Favour unto you, and peace, from God our Father and Lord Jesus Christ.
grâce et paix de la part de Dieu notre Père et du Seigneur Jésus-Christ!
3 I am giving thanks unto my God, on occasion of all my remembrance of you,
Je rends grâces à mon Dieu toutes les fois que je me sou viens de vous, et dans toutes mes prières pour vous tous,
4 At all times, in every supplication of mine, in behalf of you all, with joy, my supplication, making, —
c’est avec joie que je lui adresse ma prière,
5 On account of your contribution unto the glad-message, from the first day until the present:
à cause de votre concours unanime pour le progrès de l’Evangile, depuis le premier jours jusqu’à présent;
6 Being persuaded of this very thing—that, he who hath begun in you a good work, will perfect it, until the day of Jesus Christ;
et j’ai confiance que celui qui a commencé en vous une œuvre excellente, en poursuivra l’achèvement jusqu’au jour du Christ.
7 According as it is right in me to have this regard in behalf of you all, —because ye have had me in your hearts, both in my bonds and in the defence and confirmation of the glad-message, all of you being, joint partakers of my favour.
C’est une justice que je vous dois, de penser ainsi de vous tous, parce que je vous porte dans mon cœur, vous tous qui, soit dans mes liens, soit dans la défense et l’affermissement de l’Evangile, avez part à la même grâce que moi.
8 For God is, my witness, how I long for you all in the tender affections of Christ Jesus.
Car Dieu m’en est témoin, c’est avec tendresse que je vous aime tous dans les entrailles de Jésus-Christ.
9 And, this, I pray—that, your love, may be, yet more and more, pre-eminent in personal knowledge and all perception,
Et ce que je lui demande, c’est que votre charité abonde de plus en plus en connaissance et en toute intelligence,
10 To the end ye may be putting to the test the things that differ, in order that ye may be incorrupt and may give no occasion of stumbling, unto the day of Christ,
pour discerner ce qui vaut le mieux, afin que vous soyez purs et irréprochables jusqu’au jour du Christ,
11 Filled with that fruit of righteousness which is through Jesus Christ unto the glory and praise of God.
remplis des fruits de justice, par Jésus-Christ, pour la gloire et la louange de Dieu.
12 Howbeit, I am minded, brethren, that ye should be, getting to know, that, the things which relate unto myself, rather, unto an advancement of the glad-message, have fallen out,
Frères, je désire que vous sachiez que ce qui m’est arrivé a plutôt tourné au progrès de l’Evangile.
13 So that, my bonds, have become manifest in Christ, in the whole palace, and unto all the rest, —
En effet, pour ceux du prétoire, et pour tous les autres, il est devenu notoire que c’est pour le Christ que je suis dans les chaînes:
14 And [so that], the most of the brethren in the Lord, assured by my bonds, are becoming more abundantly bold to be fearlessly speaking the word of God: —
et la plupart des frères dans le Seigneur, encouragés par mes liens, ont redoublé de hardiesse pour annoncer sans crainte la parole de Dieu.
15 Some, indeed, by reason of envy and strife—some, however, by reason of good will—are proclaiming, the Christ:
Quelques-uns, il est vrai, prêchent aussi Jésus-Christ par envie et par esprit d’opposition; mais d’autres le font avec des dispositions bienveillantes.
16 These, indeed, out of love, knowing that, for the defence of the glad-message, I am set;
Ceux-ci agissent par charité, sachant que je suis établi pour la défense de l’Evangile;
17 But, those, out of faction, are declaring, the Christ, not purely—supposing to rouse up, tribulation, with my bonds.
tandis que les autres, animés d’un esprit de dispute, annoncent le Christ par des motifs qui ne sont pas purs, avec la pensée de me causer un surcroît d’affliction dans mes liens.
18 What then? That, in any way, whether in pretext, or in truth, Christ, is declared, and, in this, I rejoice—yea, and will rejoice!
Mais quoi? De quelque manière qu’on le fasse, que ce soit avec des arrière-pensées, ou sincèrement, le Christ est annoncé: je m’en réjouis, et je m’en réjouirai encore.
19 For I know that, this, shall turn unto me for salvation—through your supplication, and the supply of the Spirit of Jesus Christ, —
Car je sais que cela tournera à mon salut, grâce à vos prières et à l’assistance de l’Esprit de Jésus-Christ:
20 According to my eager outlook and hope, that, in nothing, shall I be put to shame, but, with all freedom of speech, as always, now also, shall Christ be magnified in my body, whether through means of life, or of death.
selon l’attente où je suis et l’espérance que j’ai que je ne serai confondu en rien; mais que, maintenant comme toujours, avec la plus entière assurance, le Christ sera glorifié dans mon corps, soit par ma vie, soit par ma mort;
21 For, unto me—living, is Christ, and, dying, gain.
car pour moi vivre [c’est] le Christ, et la mort [m’est un] gain.
22 But, if living in flesh, [is Christ], this, unto me, is a fruit of work, —and, what I shall choose, I make not known:
Cependant si en vivant plus longtemps dans la chair je dois tirer du fruit, je ne sais que choisir.
23 I am held in constraint, however, by reason of the two, —having, the coveting, to be released, and to be with, Christ, for it were far better!
Je suis pressé des deux côtés: j’ai le désir de partir et d’être avec le Christ, ce qui est de beaucoup le meilleur;
24 But, to abide still in the flesh, is more needful for your sake;
mais il est plus nécessaire que je demeure dans la chair à cause de vous.
25 And, of, this, being assured, know that I shall abide, —yea abide with you all, for your advancement, and the joy of your faith;
Et je le sais, j’en ai l’assurance, je demeurerai et je resterai avec vous tous, pour l’avancement et pour la joie de votre foi,
26 In order that, your matter of boasting, may be more abundant in Christ Jesus, regarding me, through my own presence again with you.
afin que, par mon retour auprès de vous, vous ayez en moi un abondant sujet de vous glorifier en Jésus-Christ.
27 Only, in a manner worthy of the glad-message of the Christ, be using your citizenship; in order that—whether coming and seeing you, or being absent, I may hear of the things which concern you—that ye are standing fast in one spirit, with one soul, joining for the combat along with the faith of the glad-message;
Seulement, conduisez-vous d’une manière digne de l’Evangile du Christ, afin que, soit que je vienne et que je vous voie, soit que je demeure absent, j’entende dire de vous que vous tenez ferme dans un seul et même esprit, combattant d’un même cœur pour la foi de l’Evangile,
28 And not being affrighted in anything by the opposers, —the which, is, unto them, a token of destruction, although of your salvation, and this from God;
sans vous laisser aucunement intimider par les adversaires: c’est là pour eux un signe de ruine, mais pour vous, de salut, et par la volonté de Dieu.
29 Because, unto you, hath it been given as a favour, in behalf of Christ, not only, on him, to believe, but also, in his behalf, to suffer: —
Car c’est une grâce qu’il vous a faite, à vous, à l’égard du Christ, non seulement de croire en lui, mais encore de souffrir pour lui,
30 Having, the same contest, which ye have seen in me, and now hear to be in me.
en soutenant le même combat que vous m’avez vu soutenir, et que, vous le savez, je soutiens encore aujourd’hui.
