2 The same, was originally, with God.

3 All things, through him, came into existence, and, without him, came into existence, not even one thing: that which hath come into existence,
tena sarvva. m vastu sas. rje sarvve. su s. r.s. tavastu. su kimapi vastu tenaas. r.s. ta. m naasti|
4 in him, was, life, and, the life, was, the light of men.—
sa jiivanasyaakaara. h, tacca jiivana. m manu. syaa. naa. m jyoti. h
5 And, the light, in the darkness, shineth; and, the darkness, thereof, laid not hold.
tajjyotirandhakaare pracakaa"se kintvandhakaarastanna jagraaha|
6 There arose a man, sent from God, whose name was, John:
yohan naamaka eko manuja ii"svare. na pre. sayaa ncakre|
7 The same, came, for a witness, That he might bear witness, concerning the light, that, all, might believe, through him.
tadvaaraa yathaa sarvve vi"svasanti tadartha. m sa tajjyoti. si pramaa. na. m daatu. m saak. sisvaruupo bhuutvaagamat,
8 He, was not the light, —but, that he might bear witness concerning the light,
sa svaya. m tajjyoti rna kintu tajjyoti. si pramaa. na. m daatumaagamat|
9 It, was—The real light that enlighteneth every man—Coming into the world.
jagatyaagatya ya. h sarvvamanujebhyo diipti. m dadaati tadeva satyajyoti. h|
10 In the world, he was, and, the world, through him, came into existence, and, the world, knew him not.
sa yajjagadas. rjat tanmadya eva sa aasiit kintu jagato lokaasta. m naajaanan|
11 Into his own possessions, he came, and, his own people, received him not home.
nijaadhikaara. m sa aagacchat kintu prajaasta. m naag. rhlan|
12 But, as many as did receive him, he gave, unto them, authority, children of God, to become, —unto them who were believing on his name:
tathaapi ye ye tamag. rhlan arthaat tasya naamni vya"svasan tebhya ii"svarasya putraa bhavitum adhikaaram adadaat|
13 Who—not of bloods, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but—of God, were born.
te. saa. m jani. h "so. nitaanna "saariirikaabhilaa. saanna maanavaanaamicchaato na kintvii"svaraadabhavat|
14 And, the Word, became, flesh, and pitched his tent among us, and we gazed upon his glory, —a glory, as an Only-begotten from his Father. Full of favour and truth.
sa vaado manu. syaruupe. naavatiiryya satyataanugrahaabhyaa. m paripuur. na. h san saardham asmaabhi rnyavasat tata. h pituradvitiiyaputrasya yogyo yo mahimaa ta. m mahimaana. m tasyaapa"syaama|
15 (John beareth witness concerning him, and hath cried aloud, saying—the same, was he that said—He who, after me, was coming, before me, hath advanced; because, my Chief, was he.)
tato yohanapi pracaaryya saak. syamida. m dattavaan yo mama pa"scaad aagami. syati sa matto gurutara. h; yato matpuurvva. m sa vidyamaana aasiit; yadartham aha. m saak. syamidam adaa. m sa e. sa. h|
16 Because, out of his fulness, we all, received, even favour over against favour.
apara nca tasya puur. nataayaa vaya. m sarvve krama"sa. h krama"sonugraha. m praaptaa. h|
17 Because, the law, through Moses, was given, favour and truth, through Jesus Christ, came into existence.
muusaadvaaraa vyavasthaa dattaa kintvanugraha. h satyatva nca yii"sukhrii. s.tadvaaraa samupaati. s.thataa. m|
18 No one, hath seen, God, at any time: An Only Begotten God, The One existing within the bosom of the Father, He, hath interpreted [him].
kopi manuja ii"svara. m kadaapi naapa"syat kintu pitu. h kro. dastho. advitiiya. h putrasta. m prakaa"sayat|
19 And, this, is the witness of John, when the Jews sent forth unto him, out of Jerusalem, priests and Levites, —that they might question him—Who art, thou?
tva. m ka. h? iti vaakya. m pre. s.tu. m yadaa yihuudiiyalokaa yaajakaan levilokaa. m"sca yiruu"saalamo yohana. h samiipe pre. sayaamaasu. h,
20 and he confessed, and did not deny, —and he confessed—I, am not, the Christ;
tadaa sa sviik. rtavaan naapahnuutavaan naaham abhi. sikta itya"ngiik. rtavaan|
21 and they questioned him—What then? Art, thou, Elijah? and he saith—I am not; The prophet, art, thou? and he answered—No!
tadaa te. ap. rcchan tarhi ko bhavaan? ki. m eliya. h? sovadat na; tataste. ap. rcchan tarhi bhavaan sa bhavi. syadvaadii? sovadat naaha. m sa. h|
22 So they said unto him—Who, art thou? that, an answer, we may give, unto them who sent us, —What sayest thou, concerning thyself?
tadaa te. ap. rcchan tarhi bhavaan ka. h? vaya. m gatvaa prerakaan tvayi ki. m vak. syaama. h? svasmin ki. m vadasi?
23 He said—I, am a Voice, of one crying aloud; —In the desert, make ye straight, the way of the Lord: according as said Isaiah the prophet.
tadaa sovadat| parame"sasya panthaana. m pari. skuruta sarvvata. h| itiida. m praantare vaakya. m vadata. h kasyacidrava. h| kathaamimaa. m yasmin yi"sayiyo bhavi. syadvaadii likhitavaan soham|
24 And they had been sent forth from among the Pharisees;
ye pre. sitaaste phiruu"silokaa. h|
25 and they questioned him, and said unto him—Why, then, dost thou immerse, —if, thou, art not, the Christ, nor Elijah, nor, the Prophet?
tadaa te. ap. rcchan yadi naabhi. siktosi eliyosi na sa bhavi. syadvaadyapi naasi ca, tarhi lokaan majjayasi kuta. h?
26 John answered them, saying—I, immerse, in water. In the midst of you, standeth one, whom, ye, know not; —
tato yohan pratyavocat, toye. aha. m majjayaamiiti satya. m kintu ya. m yuuya. m na jaaniitha taad. r"sa eko jano yu. smaaka. m madhya upati. s.thati|
27 after me, coming: —Of whom, I, am not worthy that I should unloose the thong of the sandal.
sa matpa"scaad aagatopi matpuurvva. m varttamaana aasiit tasya paadukaabandhana. m mocayitumapi naaha. m yogyosmi|
28 These things, in Bethany, came to pass, beyond the Jordan, where John was, immersing.
yarddananadyaa. h paarasthabaithabaaraayaa. m yasminsthaane yohanamajjayat tasmina sthaane sarvvametad agha. tata|
29 On the morrow, he beholdeth Jesus, coming unto him, and saith—See! the Lamb of God, who taketh away the sin of the world.
pare. ahani yohan svanika. tamaagacchanta. m yi"su. m vilokya praavocat jagata. h paapamocakam ii"svarasya me. sa"saavaka. m pa"syata|
30 This, is he, of whom, I, said—After me, cometh a man, who, before me, hath advanced, because, my Chief, was he.
yo mama pa"scaadaagami. syati sa matto gurutara. h, yato hetormatpuurvva. m so. avarttata yasminnaha. m kathaamimaa. m kathitavaan sa evaaya. m|
31 And, I, knew him not, but, that he might be manifested unto Israel, therefore, came, I, in water, immersing.
apara. m naahamena. m pratyabhij naatavaan kintu israayellokaa ena. m yathaa paricinvanti tadabhipraaye. naaha. m jale majjayitumaagaccham|
32 And John bare witness, saying—I have gazed upon the Spirit, descending like a dove, out of heaven, —and it abode upon him.
puna"sca yohanaparameka. m pramaa. na. m datvaa kathitavaan vihaayasa. h kapotavad avatarantamaatmaanam asyoparyyavati. s.thanta. m ca d. r.s. tavaanaham|
33 And, I, knew him not, —but, he that sent me to immerse in water, he, unto me, said—Upon whomsoever thou shalt see the Spirit descending and abiding upon him, the same, is he that immerseth in Holy Spirit.
naahamena. m pratyabhij naatavaan iti satya. m kintu yo jale majjayitu. m maa. m prairayat sa evemaa. m kathaamakathayat yasyoparyyaatmaanam avatarantam avati. s.thanta nca drak. sayasi saeva pavitre aatmani majjayi. syati|
34 I, therefore, have seen, and borne witness—That, this, is, the, Son of God.
avastanniriik. syaayam ii"svarasya tanaya iti pramaa. na. m dadaami|
35 On the morrow, again, was John standing, and, from among his disciples, two;
pare. ahani yohan dvaabhyaa. m "si. syaabhyaa. m saarddhe. m ti. s.than
36 and, looking at Jesus walking, he saith—See! the Lamb of God!
yi"su. m gacchanta. m vilokya gaditavaan, ii"svarasya me. sa"saavaka. m pa"syata. m|
37 and the two disciples hearkened unto him speaking, and they followed Jesus.
imaa. m kathaa. m "srutvaa dvau "si. syau yii"so. h pa"scaad iiyatu. h|
38 But Jesus, turning, and looking at them following, saith unto them—What seek ye? And, they, said unto him—Rabbi! which meaneth, when translated, Teacher, Where abidest thou?
tato yii"su. h paraav. rtya tau pa"scaad aagacchantau d. r.s. tvaa p. r.s. tavaan yuvaa. m ki. m gave"sayatha. h? taavap. rcchataa. m he rabbi arthaat he guro bhavaan kutra ti. s.thati?
39 He saith unto them—Be coming, and ye shall see. They came, therefore, and saw where he abode, and, with him, they abode that day. It was about the tenth, hour.

40 One of the two that heard from John and followed him, was Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter.

41 The same findeth, first, his own brother Simon, and saith unto him—We have found the Messiah! which is, when translated, Anointed.
sa itvaa prathama. m nijasodara. m "simona. m saak. saatpraapya kathitavaan vaya. m khrii. s.tam arthaat abhi. siktapuru. sa. m saak. saatk. rtavanta. h|
42 He led him unto Jesus. Jesus, looking at him, said—Thou, art Simon, the son of John, —thou, shalt be called, Cephas; which is to be translated, Peter.

43 On the morrow, he desired to go forth into Galilee. And Jesus findeth Philip, and saith unto him—Be following me!

44 Now Philip was from Bethsaida, of the city of Andrew and Peter.
baitsaidaanaamni yasmin graame pitaraandriyayorvaasa aasiit tasmin graame tasya philipasya vasatiraasiit|
45 Philip, findeth, Nathanael, and saith unto him—Him, of whom wrote Moses in the law, and the Prophets, have we found.—Jesus, son of Joseph, him from Nazareth!

46 And Nathanael said unto him—Out of Nazareth, can any good thing come? Philip saith unto him—Come, and see!

47 Jesus saw Nathanael coming unto him, and saith concerning him—See! Truly, an Israelite, in whom is no guile.

48 Nathanael saith unto him—Whence, dost thou, know, me? Jesus answered, and said unto him—Before Philip called thee, —when thou wast under the fig-tree, I saw thee.

49 Nathanael answered him—Rabbi! thou, art, the Son of God: Thou, art, King, of Israel.

50 Jesus answered, and said unto him—Because I said unto thee, I saw thee under the fig-tree, believest thou? A greater thing than these, shalt thou see!

51 And he saith unto him—Verily, verily, I say unto you: Ye shall see heaven—when set open, and, the messengers of God, ascending and descending unto the Son of Man.
