Job 29
1 And Job again took up his measure, and said,
Job continua son discours sentencieux, et dit:
2 Oh that it were with me as in the months of old, as in the days, when, GOD, used to watch over me;
Oh! que ne suis-je comme aux mois d'autrefois, comme au jour où Dieu me gardait,
3 When his lamp shone over my head, by whose light, I could go through darkness;
Quand son flambeau luisait sur ma tête, quand je marchais à sa lumière dans les ténèbres;
4 As I was, in the days of my prime, when, the intimacy of GOD, was over my tent;
Comme aux jours de mon automne, quand l'amitié de Dieu veillait sur ma tente;
5 While yet the Almighty was with me, round about me, were my young men;
Quand le Tout-Puissant était encore avec moi, et que mes jeunes gens m'entouraient;
6 When my steps were bathed in milk, and, the rock, poured out beside me, rivulets of oil:
Quand je lavais mes pieds dans le lait, et que le rocher se fondait près de moi en torrent d'huile!
7 When I went out to the gate unto the city, in the open place, made ready my seat,
Quand je sortais pour me rendre à la porte de la ville, et que je me faisais préparer un siège dans la place publique,
8 Young men saw me, and hid themselves, and, the aged, arose—they stood;
Les jeunes gens, me voyant, se retiraient; les vieillards se levaient et se tenaient debout.
9 Rulers, restrained speech, and, a hand, laid they on their mouth;
Des princes s'arrêtaient de parler, et mettaient la main sur leur bouche.
10 The voice of nobles, was hushed, and their tongue to their palate, did cleave;
La voix des chefs s'éteignait, et leur langue s'attachait à leur palais.
11 When, the ear, heard, then it pronounced me happy, When, the eye, saw, then it bare me witness;
Car l'oreille qui m'entendait me proclamait heureux, et l'œil qui me voyait me rendait témoignage.
12 Because I used to deliver the oppressed who was crying out for aid, the fatherless also, and him that had no helper;
Car je délivrais l'affligé qui criait, et l'orphelin qui n'avait personne pour le secourir.
13 The blessing of him that was ready to perish, upon me was wont to descend, and, the heart of the widow, caused I to sing for joy;
La bénédiction de celui qui s'en allait périr venait sur moi, et je faisais chanter de joie le cœur de la veuve.
14 Righteousness, I put on, and it clothed me, Like a robe and turban, was my, justice;
Je me revêtais de la justice, et elle se revêtait de moi. Mon équité était mon manteau et ma tiare.
15 Eyes, became I to the, blind, and, feet to the lame, was, I!
J'étais les yeux de l'aveugle, et les pieds du boiteux.
16 A father, was, I, to the needy, and, as for the cause which I knew not, I used to search it out;
J'étais le père des pauvres, et j'étudiais à fond la cause de l'inconnu.
17 And I shivered the fangs of the perverse, —and, out of his teeth, I tare the prey.
Je brisais les mâchoires de l'injuste, et j'arrachais la proie d'entre ses dents.
18 Then said I, Like a stem, shall I grow old, yea, as the sand, shall I multiply days:
Et je disais: Je mourrai avec mon nid, et je multiplierai mes jours comme le phénix.
19 My root, is laid open to the waters, and, the dew, shall lodge for the night in my boughs;
Ma racine sera exposée à l'eau, et la rosée passera la nuit dans mes branches.
20 Mine honour, shall be young again with me, and, my bow, in my hand, be renewed.
Ma gloire se renouvellera en moi, et mon arc se renforcera dans ma main.
21 To me, men hearkened, and waited, and kept silence for my counsel;
On m'écoutait, on attendait et on se taisait, jusqu'à ce que j'eusse donné mon avis.
22 After I had spoken, they spake not again, and, upon them, used my speech to drop;
Après que j'avais parlé, on ne répliquait pas, et ma parole découlait goutte à goutte sur eux.
23 And they waited, as for rain, for me, and, their mouths, they opened wide for the spring-rain;
Ils m'attendaient comme la pluie, et ils ouvraient leur bouche comme pour une ondée tardive.
24 I laughed at them—they lost confidence, and, the light of my countenance, they suffered not to fail;
Je souriais quand ils étaient désespérés; et ils n'altéraient pas la sérénité de mon visage.
25 I chose out their way, and sat chief, —and abode, as king, in an army, as one who, to mourners, giveth comfort.
J'aimais à aller avec eux, et je m'asseyais à leur tête; je siégeais comme un roi au milieu de ses gardes, comme un consolateur au milieu des affligés.
