Exodus 5
1 And afterwards, Moses and Aaron went in and said unto Pharaoh, —Thus, saith Yahweh God of Israel, Let my people go, that they may hold a festival to me in the desert.
Après cela, Moïse entra avec son frère chez le Pharaon, et ils lui dirent: Voici ce que dit le Seigneur Dieu d'Israël: Congédie mon peuple, afin qu'il me célèbrent une fête dans le désert.
2 Then said Pharaoh, Who is Yahweh that I should hearken to his voice, to let Israel go? I know not Yahweh, and certainly. Israel, will I not let go!
Et le Pharaon dit: Quel est donc celui-ci pour que je lui obéisse jusqu'à, congédier les fils d'Israël? Je ne connais pas le Seigneur, et je ne congédie point Israël.
3 And they said, the God of the Hebrews, hath met with us, —let us go, we pray thee, a journey of three days into the desert and sacrifice to Yahweh our God, lest he fall upon us with pestilence or with sword.
Et ils reprirent: Le Dieu des Hébreux nous convoque; nous irons donc dans le désert à trois journées de marche, afin de sacrifier au Seigneur notre Dieu, de peur que la mort et l'extermination ne tombent sur nous.
4 And the king of Egypt said unto them, Wherefore O Moses and Aaron should ye loose the people from their works? Get you to your burdens.
Le roi d'Égypte leur dit: Moïse, Aaron, pourquoi détournez-vous le peuple de ses travaux? Allez, que chacun de vous retourne à ses travaux.
5 And Pharaoh said, Lo! many—now, are the people of the land, —and are ye to make them rest from their burdens?
Le Pharaon dit encore: Ce peuple se multiplie maintenant de plus en plus; gardons-nous de leur donner aucun relâche en leurs travaux.
6 So then Pharaoh gave command on that day, unto the taskmasters over the people and unto their overseers—saying:
Et il fit un ordre aux intendants et aux secrétaires des travaux, disant:
7 Ye shall no more give straw unto the people, for making the bricks as heretofore: Let them, go, themselves, so shall they gather for themselves straw:
Ne donnez plus de paille au peuple pour faire de la brique comme hier et le jour précédent; qu'ils s'en aillent et qu'ils recueillent de la paille pour eux.
8 Nevertheless, the fixed number of bricks, which they have been making heretofore, shall ye lay upon them, ye shall not diminish therefrom, —for idle, they are, on this account, it is that they are making an outcry, saying, We must go our way, we must sacrifice to our God.
Imposez-leur néanmoins par jour la même quantité de briques qu'ils ont toujours faite, n'en ôtez rien; car ils ont du temps à perdre, c'est pour cela qu'ils ont crié: Levons-nous, et sacrifions à notre Dieu.
9 The service must be made heavy on the men that they may labour on it, —and let them not pay regard to words of falsehood.
Aggravons les travaux de ces hommes; et que leurs préoccupations soient là, au lieu d'être à de vains discours.
10 Then went forth the taskmasters of the people and their overseers, and spake unto the people, —saying, —Thus, saith Pharaoh, I am not going to give you straw,
Les intendants et leurs préposés les pressèrent donc, et ils parlèrent au peuple, disant: Voici ce que dit le Pharaon: Je ne vous donnerai plus de paille.
11 Ye yourselves go fetch you straw, of any ye can find, —yet hath there not been diminished from your service a single thing.
Allez vous-mêmes recueillir pour vous de la paille où vous en pourrez trouver; d'ailleurs votre tâche ne sera diminuée en rien.
12 So the people dispersed themselves throughout all the land of Egypt, —to gather stubble for straw:
Et le peuple se dispersa parmi toute l'Égypte pour ramasser du chaume et s'en servir au lieu de paille.
13 the taskmasters, meanwhile, being urgent saying, —Complete your works, The task of a day, in its day, as when the straw was provided.
Cependant, les intendants les pressaient, disant: Achevez vos travaux jour par jour, comme lorsqu'on vous donnait de la paille.
14 Then were beaten the overseers of the sons of Israel, whom the taskmasters of Pharaoh had set over them saying: Wherefore have ye not completed your task for making bricks, as heretofore, so also, yesterday and, to-day?
Les secrétaires de la race d'Israël, institués au dessus du peuple, furent même fustigés par les intendants du Pharaon, qui disaient: Pourquoi n'avez- vous pas fait aujourd'hui la même quantité de briques qu'hier et auparavant?
15 Then came in the overseers of the sons of Israel, and made outcry unto Pharaoh, saying, Wherefore shouldst thou do thus to thy servants?
Et les secrétaires de la race d'Israël étant entrés vers le Pharaon, lui dirent en jetant des cris: Pourquoi traite-t-on de la sorte tes serviteurs?
16 No straw, is given to thy servants, yet bricks, —they keep saying to us—make ye! And lo, thy servants, are beaten—thou dost, therefore, wrong thy people.
On ne donne plus de paille à tes serviteurs, et l'on nous dit de faire de la brique, et tes serviteurs ont été fustigés: seras-tu donc injuste envers ton peuple?
17 But he said: Idle, ye are—idle, on this account, are, ye, saying, We must take our journey, we must sacrifice to Yahweh.
Il répondit: Vous perdez du temps, vous demeurez oisifs, et à cause de cela vous dites: Sacrifions à notre Dieu.
18 Now, therefore, go labour, but, straw, shall not be given you, —yet the tale of bricks, shall ye render.
Sortez donc à l'instant et travaillez; vous n'aurez plus de paille, et vous fournirez la même quantité de briques.
19 Then did the overseers of the sons of Israel see themselves to be in an evil case, when it was said, —Ye shall not diminish from your bricks—the task of a day, in its day
Et les secrétaires de la race d'Israël se virent dans le malheur, car on leur disait: Vous ne retrancherez rien à la quantité de briques qui vous est imposée par jour.
20 So they fell upon Moses and upon Aaron, stationing themselves to meet them, —as they came forth from Pharaoh;
Ayant rencontré Aaron et Moïse qui venaient au-devant d'eux, comme ils sortaient de chez le Pharaon,
21 and they said unto them, Yahweh look upon you and judge, —in that ye have made us odious in the eyes of Pharaoh and in the eyes of his servants, putting a sword into their hand to slay us.
Ils leur dirent: Que Dieu vous voie et vous juge, parce que vous nous avez mis en mauvaise odeur devant le Pharaon et devant ses serviteurs, plaçant le glaive en sa main pour nous faire périr.
22 And Moses returned unto Yahweh and said, —O My Lord wherefore hast thou caused harm to this people? Wherefore now didst thou send me?
Moïse se tourna vers le Seigneur et dit: Je vous conjure, Seigneur, pourquoi avez-vous affligé ce peuple? Et pourquoi m'avez-vous envoyé?
23 seeing that from what time I came in unto Pharaoh to speak in thy name, he hath done harm to this people, and thou hast not delivered, thy people,
Car, depuis que je suis entré chez le Pharaon pour lui parler en votre nom, il a maltraité ce peuple, et vous n'avez point délivré votre peuple.
