Exodus 4
1 Then responded Moses, and said, And lo! they will not believe me, neither hearken to my voice, —for they will say, Yahweh, hath not appeared unto thee.
Moïse répondit à Dieu, disant: Et s'ils ne me croient point, s'ils sont indociles à ma voix (car ils me diront sans doute: Dieu ne t'est point apparu), que leur dirai-je?
2 And Yahweh said unto him—What is this in thy hand? And he said—A staff.
Et le Seigneur lui dit: Qu'as-tu là dans ta main? Une baguette, répondit- il.
3 Then said he—Cast it to the earth. And he cast it to the earth, and it became a serpent, —and Moses fled from the face thereof.
Le Seigneur reprit: Jette-la à terre. Il la jeta à terre et elle devint serpent, et Moïse s'en éloigna bien vite.
4 And Yahweh said unto Moses, Put forth thy hand, and take it by its tail: So he put forth his hand, and laid hold of it, and it became a staff in his hand: —
Le Seigneur dit ensuite à Moïse: Étends la main et saisis la queue du serpent. Il étendit la main, et il saisit la queue du serpent, qui redevint baguette dans sa main,
5 that they may believe that Yahweh, God of their fathers, —God of Abraham, God of Isaac, and God of Jacob hath appeared unto thee.
Tandis que Dieu disait: C'est pour qu'ils croient en toi et à cette apparition devant toi du Dieu de tes pères, du Dieu d'Abraham, du Dieu d'Isaac, du Dieu de Jacob.
6 Then said Yahweh unto him, yet again—Bring, I pray thee, thy hand, into thy bosom. So he brought his hand, into his bosom, —and then took it out, and lo! his hand, was leprous, —like snow,
Puis le Seigneur ajouta: Mets ta main dans ton sein. Il mit la main dans son sein, et, lorsqu'il la retira, elle était devenue comme de la neige.
7 And he said—Put back thy hand into thy bosom: So he put back his hand into his bosom, —and then took it out of his bosom, and lo it had come again like his own flesh:
Dieu dit encore: Remets ta main dans ton sein. Il remit la main dans son sein, et dès qu'il l'eut retirée, elle avait repris la couleur de la chair.
8 thus shall it come to pass, if they will not believe thee, nor hearken to the voice of the first sign, then will they believe the voice of the next sign;
Et Dieu dit: S'ils ne te croient point et ne se rendent pas à la voix du premier signe, ils croiront à la voix du second.
9 and it shall come to pass if they will not believe even these two signs nor hearken to thy voice, then shalt thou take of the water of the river, and pour it out on the dry land, —so shall the water which thou hast taken from the river, become, yea it shall become, blood, on the dry land.
S'ils ne croient pas à ces deux signes, et qu'ils restent indociles à ta voix, tu prendras de l'eau du fleuve, tu la verseras à terre, et cette eau du fleuve que tu auras prise deviendra du sang.
10 And Moses said unto Yahweh—Pardon, O My Lord! not a man of words, am I, neither heretofore, nor since thou hast spoken unto thy servant, —for heavy of mouth and heavy of tongue, I am.
Et Moïse dit à Dieu: Je vous conjure, Seigneur, je ne suis point capable; je ne l'étais ni hier, ni le jour précédent, je ne le suis pas même depuis que vous avez commencé à parler à votre serviteur; je suis bègue et lent à m'exprimer.
11 Then Yahweh said unto him—Who appointed a mouth for man, or who appointeth him to be dumb, or deaf, or seeing or blind? Is it not I, Yahweh?
Le Seigneur répondit à Moïse: Qui a donné une bouche à l'homme, qui l'a fait muet et sourd, qui l'a fait clairvoyant ou aveugle? n'est-ce point moi, le Seigneur?
12 Now, therefore go, —and, I, will be with thy mouth, so will I direct thee, what thou shalt speak.
Marche donc, et je t'ouvrirai la bouche, et je te suggérerai ce que tu auras à dire.
13 And he said—Pardon, O My Lord! send, I pray thee by the hand of him whom thou wilt send—
Et Moïse dit: Je vous conjure, Seigneur, choisissez un autre tout à fait capable, celui que vous devez envoyer.
14 Then was kindled the anger of Yahweh against Moses, and he said—Is there not Aaron, thy brother, the Levite? I know that he, can speak. Moreover also lo! he himself is coming forth to meet thee, as surely as he seeth thee, so surely will he rejoice in his heart.
Le Seigneur fut irrité contre Moïse, et il dit: N'as-tu pas Aaron ton frère, le lévite: je sais qu'il parlera, lui, pour toi; il viendra à ta rencontre; et, après t'avoir vu, il sera rempli de joie.
15 Then shalt thou speak unto him, and shalt put the words in his mouth, —and, I, will be with thy mouth and with his mouth, so will I direct you what ye shall do.
Tu lui parleras, tu feras passer mes paroles par sa bouche, et j'ouvrirai ta bouche et la sienne, je vous suggérerai ce que vous aurez à faire.
16 And, he, shall speak for thee unto the people, —so shall it come to pass that he shall become thy mouth, and thou shalt become to him as God.
Il parlera à ta place au peuple, il sera ta bouche, et tu seras pour lui la parole de Dieu.
17 And this staff, take thou in thy hand, —wherewith thou shalt do the signs.
Cette même baguette qui a été changée en serpent, la la prendras dans ta main, et par elle tu feras des prodiges.
18 So Moses went and returned unto Jethro his father-in-law and said to him—Let me go, I pray thee, and return unto my brethren who are in Egypt, that I may see whether they are yet alive. And Jethro said to Moses: Go and prosper.
Alors, Moïse s'éloigna, rentra chez Jéthro son beau-père, et dit: Je vais partir et retourner vers mes frères en Égypte; je verrai s'ils vivent encore. Et Jéthro dit à Moïse: Va et porte-toi bien. Or, après un grand nombre de jours, le roi d'Égypte était mort.
19 Then said Yahweh unto Moses in Midian, Go, return to Egypt, —for all the men are dead who were seeking thy life.
Le Seigneur avait dit à Moïse en Madian: Pars, retourne en Égypte, car ceux qui en voulaient à ta vie ne sont plus.
20 So Moses took his wife and his sons, and caused them to ride upon the ass, and he returned to the land of Egypt, —and Moses took the staff of God in his hand.
Moïse ayant donc pris sa femme et ses enfants, les fit monter sur des ânes, et retourna en Égypte. Il prit aussi en sa main sa baguette, celle qu'il avait auprès de Dieu.
21 And Yahweh said unto Moses, When thou goest to return to Egypt, see as touching all the wonders which I have put in thy hand, that thou do them before Pharaoh—but, I, will let his heart wax bold, and he will not suffer the people to go.
Et le Seigneur dit à Moïse: Marche, rentre en Égypte, et tu verras les prodiges que j'accomplirai par tes mains; tu les feras devant le Pharaon, et j'endurcirai son cœur, et il ne congédiera pas le peuple.
22 Then shalt thou say unto Pharaoh, Thus, saith Yahweh—My son—my firstborn, is Israel;
Et tu diras au Pharaon: Voici ce que dit le Seigneur: Israël est mon fils premier-né;
23 Therefore I say unto thee, Let my son go, that he may serve me, But if thou refuse to let him go, behold, I, am going to slay, thy son, thy firstborn.
Et je te dis: Congédie mon peuple, afin qu'il m'offre un sacrifice; si tu refuses de le congédier, prends garde, je ferai périr ton fils premier-né.
24 And it came to pass, on the way, in the resting-place for the night, that Yahweh fell upon him, and sought to kill him.
Or, pendant le voyage, à la halte, un ange du Seigneur rencontra Moïse, et il cherchait à le tuer.
25 So Zipporah took a sharp stone and cut off the foreskin of her son, and cast it down at his feet, —and said—Surely, a bridegroom by rites of blood, art thou to me!
Aussitôt Séphora, ayant pris un caillou, circoncit son fils, et Moïse tomba aux pieds de l'ange, disant: Il vient de couler, le sang de la circoncision de mon fils.
26 So he let him go, Then, it was that she said, A bridegroom by rites of blood—with regard to the rites of circumcision.
Et l'ange le laissa libre parce qu'il avait dit: il vient de couler, le sang de la circoncision de mon fils.
27 And Yahweh said unto Aaron, Go thy way to meet Moses, towards the desert. So he went his way, and fell in with him in the mountain of God and kissed him.
Cependant, le Seigneur dit à Aaron: Va dans le désert à la rencontre de Moïse. Aaron étant parti, rencontra son frère en la montagne de Dieu (Horeb), et ils s'embrassèrent.
28 And Moses told Aaron, all the words of Yahweh wherewith he had sent him, —and all the signs wherewith he had charged him.
Moïse redit à son frère toutes les paroles du Seigneur au sujet de sa mission, et tous les ordres qu'il lui avait donnés.
29 So Moses and Aaron went their way, —and gathered together all the elders of the sons of Israel.
Ensuite, il partit avec Aaron, et ils rassemblèrent les anciens des fils d'Israël.
30 And Aaron spake all the words which Yahweh had spoken unto Moses, —and did the signs before the eyes of the people,
Et Aaron dit toutes les paroles que le Seigneur avait dites à Moïse, et il fit des miracles devant le peuple.
31 And the people believed, —and when they heard that Yahweh had concerned himself for the sons of Israel, and that he had looked upon their humiliation, then bent they their heads and bowed themselves down.
Le peuple crut; il se réjouit de ce que le Seigneur avait visité les fils d'Israël, et vu leur oppression; et le peuple, s'étant prosterné, adora.
