Exodus 20

1 And God spake all these words saying: —

Et Dieu prononça toutes ces paroles, en disant:

2 I, am Yahweh thy God, —who have brought thee forth out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of servants: —

Je suis Yahweh, ton dieu, qui t'ai fait sortir du pays d'Egypte, de la maison de servitude.

3 Thou shalt not have other gods besides me.

Tu n'auras pas d'autres dieux devant ma face.

4 Thou shalt not make to thee an image, or any form, that is in the heavens above, —or that is in the earth beneath, —or that is in the waters beneath the earth:

Tu ne te feras pas d'image taillée, ni aucune figure de ce qui est en haut dans le ciel, ou de ce qui est en bas sur la terre, ou de ce qui est dans les eaux au-dessous de la terre.

5 thou shalt not bow thyself down to them nor be led to serve them—For, I, Yahweh, thy God, am a jealous GOD, visiting the iniquity of fathers upon sons, unto three [generations] and, unto four, of them that hate me;

Tu ne te prosterneras point devant elles et tu ne les serviras point. Car moi Yahweh, ton Dieu, je suis un Dieu jaloux, qui punis l'iniquité des pères sur les enfants, sur la troisième et sur la quatrième génération pour ceux qui me haïssent,

6 but shewing lovingkindness unto thousands [of generations], —of them who love me, and keep my commandments.

et faisant miséricorde jusqu'à mille générations, pour ceux m'aiment et qui gardent mes commandements.

7 Thou shalt not utter the name of Yahweh thy God for falsehood, for Yahweh will not let him go unpunished who uttereth his name for falsehood.

Tu ne prendras point le nom de Yahweh, ton Dieu, en vain, car Yahweh ne laissera pas impuni celui qui prendra son nom en vain.

8 Remember the sabbath day, to hallow it:

Souviens-toi du jour du sabbat pour le sanctifier.

9 Six days, shalt thou labour, and do all thy work;

Pendant six jours tu travailleras, et tu feras tout ton ouvrage.

10 but, the seventh day, is a sabbath unto Yahweh thy God, —thou shalt do no work, thou nor thy son nor thy daughter nor thy servant, nor thy handmaid, nor thy beast, nor thy sojourner who is within thy gates,

Mais le septième jour est un sabbat consacré à Yahweh, ton Dieu: tu ne feras aucun ouvrage, ni toi, ni ton fils, ni ta fille, ni ton serviteur, ni ta servante, ni ton bétail, ni l'étranger qui est dans tes portes.

11 For, in six days, did Yahweh make the heavens and the earth, [and] the sea—and all that in them is, and rested on the seventh day, —for this cause, Yahweh blessed the sabbath day and hallowed it.

Car pendant six jours Yahweh a fait le ciel, la terre, la mer et tout ce qu'ils contiennent, et il s'est reposé le septième jour: c'est pourquoi Yahweh a béni le jour du sabbat et l'a sanctifié.

12 Honour thy father, and thy mother, —that thy days may be prolonged upon the soil, which Yahweh thy God is about to give unto thee.

Honore ton père et ta mère, afin que tes jours soient prolongés dans le pays que Yahweh, ton Dieu, te donne.

13 Thou shalt not commit murder.

Tu ne tueras point.

14 Thou shalt not commit adultery.

Tu ne commettras point d'adultère.

15 Thou shalt not steal.

Tu ne déroberas point.

16 Thou shalt not testify against thy neighbour, with a witness of falsehood.

Tu ne porteras point de faux témoignages contre ton prochain.

17 Thou shalt not covet, thy neighbour’s house, —thou shalt not covet, thy neighbour’s wife nor his servant nor his handmaid nor his ox, nor his ass, nor anything which belongeth unto thy neighbour.

Tu ne convoiteras point la maison de ton prochain; tu ne convoiteras point la femme de ton prochain, ni son serviteur, ni sa servante, ni son bœuf, ni son âne, ni rien de ce qui appartient à ton prochain.

18 And, all the people, were witnessing the voices and the torches, and the sound of the horn, and the mountain smoking, —so then the people were struck with awe and shrank back, and stood afar off.

Tout le peuple entendait les tonnerres et le son de la trompette; il voyait les flammes et la montagne fumante; à ce spectacle, il tremblait et se tenait à distance.

19 And they said unto Moses, Speak, thou, with us, and we will hear, —but let not God speak with us lest we die.

Ils dirent à Moïse: " Parles-nous, toi, et nous écouterons; mais que Dieu ne nous parle point, de peur que nous ne mourrions. "

20 And Moses said unto the people—Do not fear, for to the end he may prove you, hath God come, —and to the end the reverence of him may be upon your faces that ye sin not.

Moïse répondit au peuple: " Ne vous effrayez pas, car c'est pour vous mettre à l'épreuve que Dieu est venu, et pour que sa crainte vous soit présente, afin que vous ne péchiez pas. "

21 So then the people stood afar off, and, Moses, approached unto the thick gloom, where God was.

Et le peuple resta à distance; mais Moïse s'approcha de la nuée où était Dieu.

22 Then said Yahweh unto Moses, Thus, shalt thou say, unto the sons of Israel, —Ye yourselves, have seen that out of the heavens, have I spoken with you.

Et Yahweh dit à Moïse: " Tu parleras ainsi aux enfants d'Israël: vous avez vu que je vous ai parlé du ciel.

23 Ye shall not make [aught] beside me, —neither gods of silver, nor gods of gold, shall ye make to yourselves.

Vous ne ferez point à côté de moi de dieux d'argent et vous ne ferez point de dieux d'or.

24 An altar of earth, shalt thou make to me, then shalt thou offer thereupon thine ascending-sacrifices and thy peace-offerings, thy sheep, and thine oxen. In every place where I may mention my name, will I come in unto thee and will bless thee.

Tu m'élèveras un autel de terre, sur lequel tu offriras tes holocaustes et tes sacrifices pacifiques, tes brebis et tes bœufs. Dans tous les lieux où j'aurai fait souvenir de mon nom, je viendrai vers toi, et je te bénirai.

25 But if, an altar of stones, thou wilt make to me, thou shalt not build them hewn, —for as soon as thou hast lifted, thy sharp tool, thereupon, thou hast profaned it;

Si tu m'élèves un autel de pierre, tu ne le construiras point en pierres taillées, car, en levant ton ciseau sur la pierre, tu la rendrais profane.

26 neither shalt thou go up, by steps unto mine altar, —lest by any means thy shame be discovered thereupon.

Tu ne monteras point par des degrés à mon autel, afin que ta nudité n'y soit pas découverte.
