Deuteronomy 7

1 When Yahweh thy God shall bring thee into the land which thou art going in to possess, and shall clear away many nations from before thee—the Hittites and the Girgashites and the Amorites, and the Canaanites and the Perizzites, and the Hivites and the Jebusites—seven nations greater in number and stronger than thou;

Lorsque le Seigneur t'aura introduit en la terre où tu vas, pour qu'elle soit ton héritage, et que devant tes yeux il aura fait disparaître de grandes nations: l'Hettéen, le Gergéséen, l'Amorrhéen, le Chananéen, le Phérézéen, l'Evéen et le Jébuséen, sept nations nombreuses et plus fortes que toi,

2 and Yahweh thy God shall deliver them up before thee, and thou shalt smite them, thou shalt devote them to destruction, thou shalt not solemnise with them a covenant neither shalt thou shew them favour;

Et que le Seigneur ton Dieu te les aura livrées, et que tu les auras vaincues, tu les effaceras entièrement, tu ne feras pas d'alliance avec elles, tu seras pour elles sans pitié.

3 neither shalt thou intermarry with them, —thy daughter, shalt thou not give unto his son, nor his daughter, shalt thou take for thy son;

Vous ne ferez point de mariages avec elles; tu ne donneras point à son fils ta fille, et tu ne prendras point sa fille pour ton fils.

4 for he will turn aside thy son from following me, and they will serve other gods, —so shall the anger of Yahweh kindle upon you, and he will destroy thee, speedily.

Car sa fille détournerait ton fils de moi, et il servirait d'autres dieux, et le Seigneur se courroucerait contre son peuple, et il t'exterminerait tout à coup.

5 Verily, thus, shall ye do unto them: Their altars, shall ye tear down, And their pillars, shall ye break in pieces, —And their sacred stems, shall ye hew down, And their carved images, shall ye burn up in the fire.

Voici comme vous les traiterez: vous enlèverez leurs autels, vous briserez leurs colonnes, vous arracherez leurs bois sacrés, vous consumerez par la flamme les images sculptées de leurs dieux.

6 For a holy people, art thou unto Yahweh thy God: of thee, hath Yahweh thy God, made choice, that thou shouldest become his people as a treasure, above all the peoples that are on the face of the ground:

Car tu es un peuple saint, le peuple du Seigneur ton Dieu, et le Seigneur ton Dieu t'a choisi pour que tu sois son propre peuple, séparé de toutes les nations qui existent sur la surface de la terre.

7 not because ye were more in number than any of the peoples, did Yahweh become attached to you and make choice of you, —for, ye, were fewer than any of the peoples;

Le Seigneur ne vous a point préférés, il ne vous a pas choisis parce que vous êtes plus nombreux qu'aucune de ces nations; car vous êtes moindres en nombre que chacun de ces peuples.

8 but because Yahweh loved you and because he would keep the oath which he sware unto your fathers, did Yahweh bring you forth with a firm hand, —and redeem thee out of the house of servants, out of the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt.

Mais il vous aime et il tient le serment qu'il a fait à vos pères. Voilà pourquoi le Seigneur vous a guidés d'une main puissante; il t'a fait sortir de la maison de servitude, il t'a délivré de la maison du Pharaon, roi d'Egypte.

9 So then, thou must know that, Yahweh thy God, he, is God, —the faithful GOD, keeping his covenant and his lovingkindness with them that love him and keep his commandments, to a thousand generations

Tu sauras que le Seigneur ton Dieu, le seul Dieu, est un Dieu fidèle, réservant son alliance et sa miséricorde à ceux qui l'aiment et à ceux qui observent ses commandements, pendant des milliers de générations,

10 but requiting them who hate him unto his face to destroy them, —he will not be slack towards him that hateth him, unto his face, will he requite him.

Mais se vengeant dès le début de ceux qui le haïssent; ceux-là, il les extermine; il ne met point de retard avec ceux qui le haïssent, il en tirera une vengeance soudaine.

11 So shalt thou keep the commandment and the statutes and the regulations, which I am commanding thee to-day, to do them.

Tu observeras les commandements, les jugements et les ordonnances que je t'intime aujourd'hui.

12 Then shall it come to pass if ye will hearken unto these regulations, and keep and do them, then will Yahweh thy God keep with thee the covenant and the lovingkindness which he sware unto thy fathers;

Aussi longtemps que tu obéiras à ces préceptes, que tu t'appliqueras à les mettre en pratique, le Seigneur ton Dieu te conservera l'alliance et la miséricorde qu'il a promises à tes pères.

13 and will love thee, and bless thee and multiply thee, —and bless the fruit of thy body and the fruit of thy ground thy corn and thy new wine and thine oil the young of thy kine and the ewes of thy flock, upon the soil which he swart unto thy fathers to give unto thee.

Et il t'aimera, et il te bénira; il te multipliera, il bénira les fruits de tes entrailles, et les produits de ta terre: ton blé, ton vin, ton huile, tes grands et menus troupeaux sur la terre que le Seigneur a juré à tes pères de te donner.

14 Blessed shalt thou be beyond all the peoples, —there shall not be in thee a barren male or female, nor among thy cattle;

Tu seras béni au-dessus de toutes les nations; il n'y aura point parmi vous d'hommes sans enfants, ni de femme stérile; il n'y aura point non plus de stérilité parmi les troupeaux.

15 and Yahweh, will turn away, from thee, all disease, —and as for all the sore sicknesses of Egypt which thou knowest, he will not lay them upon thee, but will put them upon all who hate thee;

Et le Seigneur ton Dieu te préservera de toute maladie, et de ces mauvaises contagions de l'Egypte que tu as vues; il ne fera tomber sur toi aucune de celles que tu y as connues, et il en frappera ceux qui te haïssent.

16 and thou shalt devour all the peoples whom, Yahweh thy God, is delivering up unto thee, thine eye shall not look with pity upon them, neither shalt thou serve their gods, for a snare, would it be unto thee.

Et tu mangeras ce que tu auras enlevé à ces nations; le Seigneur te le donne; ton œil ne les prendra pas en pitié, et tu ne serviras point leurs dieux, car ce serait pour toi un achoppement.

17 Although thou mightest say in thy heart: More in number, are these nations than I, —how can, I dispossess them?

Et si, en ta pensée, tu dis: Telle de ces nations est plus forte que moi, comment pourrai-je l'exterminer?

18 thou must not be afraid of them, —thou must, remember, what Yahweh thy God did, unto Pharaoh and unto all Egypt:

Rassure-toi; rappelle à ton souvenir tout ce qu'a fait le Seigneur ton Dieu au Pharaon et aux Egyptiens,

19 the great provings which thine own eyes saw, and the signs and the wonders and the firm hand and the stretched-out arm, wherewith Yahweh thy God brought thee forth, —so, will Yahweh thy God do unto all the peoples, before whom thou art afraid.

Les grandes épreuves que tes yeux ont vues, les signes et les grands prodiges, la main puissante et le bras très-haut; de même que le Seigneur ton Dieu t'a délivré, de même il te fera triompher de toutes les nations dont tu redoutes la face.

20 Moreover also, the hornet, will Yahweh thy God send among them, —until they are destroyed who are left remaining, and who are hiding themselves from thy face.

Le Seigneur ton Dieu enverra contre elles des essaims de guêpes, jusqu'à ce qu'ils aient détruit celles qui t'auraient échappé et se seraient cachées devant toi.

21 Thou shalt not be affrighted at their presence, —for Yahweh thy God in thy midst is a Go great and to be revered.

Tu ne seras pas blessé en face d'elles: parce que le Seigneur ton Dieu est avec toi: Dieu grand et puissant.

22 So will Yahweh thy God, clear away these nations from before thee little by little, —thou mayest not consume them at once, lest the wild beast of the field should multiply ever thee.

Le Seigneur ton Dieu les détruira peu à peu devant toi; tu ne pourras les exterminer soudain, de peur que la contrée ne devienne un désert, et que les bêtes farouches ne se multiplient contre toi.

23 But Yahweh thy God will deliver them up before thee, —and discomfit them with a great discomfiture, until they are destroyed;

Le Seigneur ton Dieu te les livrera; tu les détruiras lentement jusqu'à ce qu'enfin tu les aies exterminées.

24 and will deliver their kings into thy hand and thou shalt destroy their name, from under the heavens, —not a man shall stand before thee, until thou hast destroyed them.

Et il te livrera leurs rois, et tu effaceras leur nom de ce pays; nul ne te résistera face à face, jusqu'à ce que tu les aies exterminées.

25 The carved images of their gods, shalt thou consume with fire, —thou shalt not covet the silver and gold upon them to take unto thee, lest thou be ensnared thereby; for the abomination of Yahweh thy God, it is;

Tu consumeras par la flamme les images sculptées de leurs dieux; tu ne convoiteras ni l'or ni l'argent qui les ornent; tu ne le prendras pas pour toi, de peur que tu n'en sois puni; car c'est une abomination pour le Seigneur ton Dieu.

26 and thou shalt not bring an abomination into thy house, and so become devoted to destruction, like it, thou shalt, abhor, it, and thou shalt, loathe it, because a thing devoted to destruction, it is.

Tu n'emporteras point d'abominations en ta demeure, car tu serais anathème comme elles; tu les détesteras, tu les auras en abomination: elles sont anathèmes.
